Throwback Thursday: Syracuse SkyChiefs open their new ballpark in 1997 (PS; Crowley)
Today, weather permitting, the Syracuse Chiefs open their 2017 schedule with a game against the Rochester Red Wings at NBT Stadium.
The team's first opener at its new ballpark was 20 years ago, on April 3, 1997, and the team and stadium had different names, the SkyChiefs and P&C Stadium.
And the baseball gods gifted the city a perfect day to open its season and stadium. (At least at first pitch, there were showers before the game finished.)
Chiefs' historian Ron Gersbacher told the Post-Standard that day that it was only the second opening day in the past 20 years with sunny skies.
