Welcome to Income Tax Pay Day!

In the United States, Tax Day is a colloquial term for the day on which individual income tax returns are due to the federal government.[1] The term may also refer to the same day for states, even where the tax return due date is a different day.

Federal income tax was introduced with the Revenue Act of 1861 to help fund the Civil War, and subsequently repealed, re-adopted, and held unconstitutional. The early taxes were based on assessments, not voluntary tax returns. Tax payment dates varied by act.[7]

Syracuse football recruiting: JUCO defensive end Josh Allen commits to SU (DO; Matthew Gutierrez)

Junior college defensive end Josh Allen has committed to Syracuse, he announced Monday afternoon via Twitter. Allen is the 27th addition to the Orange’s 2017 class.

The 6-foot-4, 260-pounder played two seasons at Long Beach City College, redshirting a third. In 21 games at the JUCO level, Allen picked up 88 tackles, 29 for loss, and 9.5 sacks. He broke up five passes and recovered four fumbles. He drew interest from Houston, USF, Iowa State, Oregon, Louisville and UCLA, per 247Sports.com.

He committed and signed with Arizona after two years at Long Beach, but he failed to qualify, according to At their request, this network is being blocked from this site..

Allen visited Syracuse last weekend and picked the Orange on Monday. He was first offered by former head coach Scott Shafer’s staff in November 2015.

Syracuse Athletics to unveil new student ticket model (DO; Gutierrez)

In an attempt to boost attendance among both students and alumni, Syracuse Athletics will unveil a new student ticket model on Wednesday — the first such move in at least 10 years, said Jeremiah Maher, SU’s associate athletics director for ticket sales and operations. Students will receive an email on Wednesday with sign-up instructions for the new 2017-2018 season pass, which will precede a rewards program set to launch this fall.

“Those of you who are diehard fans,” Syracuse Director of Athletics John Wildhack said last week, “we want to give you a rich experience. We want to give you the opportunity to do that and have some additional benefits.”

The student pass, set to open Wednesday, will operate for football, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s lacrosse. There are four options for students, each giving access to every SU home game while class is in session. Three of the four options include a priority points element, which includes additional benefits and carries into a student’s life post-Syracuse.

“What the university had been offering was a little plain,” Johnny Oliver, president of SU’s student section Otto’s Army, said. “We hope by offering more choices, returning students will be inclined to get student tickets again.”

Ranking the ACC's Toughest College Football Schedules in 2017 (athlonsports.com; Kurkijian)

Once again, the balance of power in the ACC weighs heavily in the Atlantic Division.

With Florida State, Clemson and Louisville bringing back what they do, those three teams all look like top 15-type squads heading into the 2017 college football season. Therefore, when we look at which ACC schedules are the toughest that has to be taken into account.

However, the gap closes slightly this season. Both Virginia Tech and Miami are in the second year of promising new head coaches in Justin Fuente and Mark Richt, respectively, and programs like North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Georgia Tech are probably a slight step ahead of the second group in the Coastal Division.

There will be some terrific non-conference battles (hello, Alabama vs. Florida State), and whenever Clemson, Florida State or Louisville play, it should have national attention.

So let's take a peek around the league to see which teams have the toughest roads to hoe.

1. Florida State

Non-Con: Alabama (in Atlanta), vs. ULM, vs. Delaware State, at Florida
Atlantic Home: NC State, Louisville, Syracuse
Atlantic Road: Wake Forest, Boston College, Clemson
Crossover: vs. Miami, at Duke

Look inside 147-year-old Syracuse church turned into apartments (photos) (PS; Moriarty)

From the outside, the former West Genesee United Methodist Church looks much the way it always has since it was built in 1870. But inside are 24 modern apartments.

Developer Mark Congel has finished turning the 147-year-old church at 1700 W. Genesee St. into one- and two-bedroom apartments. The first tenants are to begin moving into the building, now named The Geddes, this weekend.

Other than repointing the bricks, installing new windows and replacing the roof, Congel has left the exterior of the building untouched. Inside, though, he added a second floor to the church's auditorium and built apartments throughout the church and inside a church school that was added to the back of the building in 1912.

The glass has been replaced, but the shape of the church's windows have not been changed. So quite a few of the apartments have arched windows.

"I think it's important to honor the history of these buildings when you can," Congel said.

The architect on the project was Lake Architectural, of Marcellus.

The transformation cost approximately $3.4 million. Monthly rents range from $800 to $1,700, including cable television and Wi-Fi. (Utilities are not included in the rent.)
