Welcome to Deoxiribonucleic Acid Day!

National DNA Day is a holiday celebrated on April 25. It commemorates the day in 1953 when James Watson, Francis Crick, Maurice Wilkins, Rosalind Franklin and colleagues published papers in the journal Nature on the structure of DNA.[1][2][3] Furthermore, on that day in 2003 it was declared that the Human Genome Project was very close to complete, and "the remaining tiny gaps [we]re considered too costly to fill."[4][5]

Orange Watch: What’s in a name? Rare similarity for two Syracuse football players - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: It’s been a couple of months since he enrolled for the spring semester to join the Syracuse football program as a grad transfer from Notre Dame, and it’s been a couple of weeks since he missed four days due to an unspecified injury during the spring practice sessions. During this past Saturday’s SU football “Spring Showcase” event at the Dome, we got a long look at the physical play of CB Devin Butler, a Washington, D.C. native who didn’t play last season (his senior season) for the Irish, going up against several of his speedy Orange receiving corps teammates during the scrimmage. One of those receivers, not to be confused, is also named Devin Butler. The sophomore wideout also from the D.C. area, is looking for a breakout season, and he caught a late TD pass from starting QB Eric Dungey in the “Showcase,” hauling in a perfectly thrown ball over the out-stretched arm of you guessed it, Devin Butler.

Prior to 2017, it has only happened once before in the 127 year history of Syracuse football.

While there have been 15 other instances in which there have been two players with the same name that have lettered in program annals – Jim Brown, William Brown, Chris Davis, John Dillon, Kevin Greene, Charles Heck (Sr. and Jr.), Mike Jones, William Meyers, John Miller, William Perry, Tom Smith, Tom Stephens, Daniel Sullivan, John Taylor, and Joe Watt, only one other time prior to this upcoming season were there two players that shared the same name on the same Orange football roster.

You have to go back to the 1972 season, the penultimate in Ben Schwartzwalder’s quarter century of running the program, to find David A. King and David T. King.

The latter, or Dave T. King, was a backup quarterback on the 5-6 squad, passing for 344 yards and two touchdowns, along with three interceptions. The former, more commonly known as Dave King, was a standout starting linebacker named as one of the team’s defensive MVPs. He died in 2009 at age 58.

Syracuse fans are everywhere...even the other Rome

Harbaugh makes a wish as Michigan football team tours Rome (ESPN; AP)

The tradition of throwing coins into Trevi Fountain isn't meant for wishes.

Jim Harbaugh made one anyway.

Standing with his back to the fountain, which is customary in Rome's Trevi district, Harbaugh pulled three coins from his pocket and tossed them into the water. In Roman culture, one coin ensures a return trip to the city, but three coins ensures a happy, lifelong marriage. Still, Harbaugh put some American culture into his throw.

"I wished for a championship," he said. "The highest one."

The Michigan football team made its way through Rome on Monday, spending more than eight hours checking out sites like the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps, the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and Piazza Navona.

Harbaugh and his youngest daughter, Addie, made sure to kneel and say a prayer inside the Pantheon -- an ancient monument that also doubles as a church. Just outside, Harbaugh was immediately recognized by several groups of American tourists.

"Where are you from?" the Michigan coach asked a couple from Syracuse, New York. "Syracuse! ... Go Blue."

Syracuse University alumni continue to pursue careers outside central New York, emulating statewide trend (DO; Watson)

As the Syracuse University class of 2017 looks toward life after college, most will be leaving the central New York area, emulating a state-wide trend.

New York is among the top states with the highest loss in college-educated people, per The New York Times. Of the SU students who report their post-collegiate endeavors, about 10 percent remain in Syracuse and the surrounding area of central New York, said Michael Cahill, director of SU’s career services.

The fact that most students leave the area is common among private, national universities, he said. A major reason students leave the area is because they don’t come with the mindset that they are going to stay, Cahill said.

“We are more of a national university,” he said. “So it’s not really thinking, ‘I’m going to school in Syracuse because I really want to get to know the community and stay there.’ They have other ideas in mind.”

As of 2016, 29,000 SU alumni were living in Syracuse, said David Bartell, executive director of outreach programs in the Office of Alumni Engagement. Of that number, 20 percent have graduated within the last 10 years, he said.

The top three schools accounted for are the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Education and the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, he said. Bartell noted that high numbers from the education school may stem from graduate students who stay in the area.

Miami Hurricanes Football: QB Jack Allison leaving program

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami announced Tuesday that quarterback Jack Allison has decided to leave the football program.

“Jack approached me and indicated that he felt like he would have more opportunities for playing time at another program,” head coach Mark Richt said. “We wish him all the best in his future plans.”

Allison, a native of Parrish, Fla., redshirted for the Hurricanes this past season.

A 4-star recruit in the 2016 recruiting class, Allison was running behind Malik Rosier and Evan Shirreffs in the race to be Miami’s QB in 2017. While Allison has the strongest arm of any of the QBs on Miami’s roster, his inconsistent play was holding him back from being a top contender to start this season.

Additionally, Mark Richt recently told a local Miami radio show that he was interested to see what 4-star QB signee N’Kosi Perry could potentially bring to the position. With that statement, and 2 other QBs running in front of him, Allison has elected to continue his career elsewhere.

During Spring Practice, Jack Allison’s father said his son wouldn’t be leaving Miami, regardless of the outcome of the QB battle. That statement was proven false today.

Before spring, I wrote that at least 1 of the non-starting QBs would end up transferring. There is simply too much talent at that position group to have all those guys stick around when only 1 can play at a time. I didn’t think Allison would be the player to leave, but here we are.

In any event, we wish Jack Allison the best in his future endeavors. More on this transfer, and the fallout for the Canes’ QB competition in the coming days.
