Syracuse Football Conversation With Jay Bromley (Post 2017 NFL Draft) (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Following the conclusion of the 2017 NFL Draft, we spoke with former Syracuse football player, Jay Bromley. We talked NFL Draft, Syracuse, and more!
For the second time in three years, we saw no Syracuse football players taken in the 2017 NFL Draft. While disappointing for sure, it was a relief to see both Amba Etta-Tawo and Brisly Estime get picked up after the fact.

Although that wasn’t the case in the 2014 NFL Draft. Former Orange star, Jay Bromley, was drafted by the New York Giants in the third round (74th overall). Since being drafted he has made his glory by being a pass rushing, penetrating, defensive force.

We decided to catch up with Jay to hear how he’s doing, what he thinks about Dino Babers, and to re-live his NFL Draft journey. We interviewed Jay over the course of the NFL Draft weekend.

Bromley was most recently back at the Carrier Dome for the “Spring Showcase” signing autographs with fellow Orange Alum, Shamarko Thomas. Lets get into our interview, hope you enjoy!

Can SU Football Make Michigan A Pipeline State? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Dickinson)

Detroit’s Cass Technical High School is a prep school. Students get in based on test scores and grades, and then choose a curriculum path (such as business management, marketing, engineering) to pursue the next four years. Football isn’t one of the available career choices, but Syracuse may be adding its own elective after how much interest the Orange has shown in the Technicians (Cass Tech’s mascot).

Syracuse wants to build a relationship with Cass Tech, an effort that began the second Dino Babers took over the program. Tim Walton was the first player out of the school to commit to SU in 2016. He went on an official visit in the second month of Babers’ tenure, and committed days later. In the class of 2017, Babers offered five players from the school: a quarterback, two linemen and two defensive ends who were all rated at three stars. Three of those five ended up at Big Ten schools, one went to Northern Illinois, and Zach Morton (a defensive end) chose Syracuse. SU has three more offers to Cass players in the 2018 class (one of which is already committed to Notre Dame) and over the weekend offered four class of 2019 recruits from the school. Dino Babers is obviously trying to plant an orange seed in the Cass Tech locker room, but can you make a high school in Michigan a feeder for college football in New York, and is it worth it?

Michigan hasn’t been a hotbed for SU recruiting in the past. Morton and Walton were both one of just two commits from the state in their classes, and before that there hadn’t been more than one commit from the state in a year since 2012. There’s a reason for that: it generally doesn’t work. Recruiting has become an international endeavor in the last decade, but players still typically go to schools in their home region. Midwest players go to the Big Ten. West Coast? Pac 12. East Coast? ACC. The best players still end up on the best teams no matter the location, but staying close to home isn’t uncommon. That’s why most teams only go after a few far-away recruits, because it’s cheaper and easier to get players close to home.

ACC post spring power rankings: Florida State looks strong (espn; Hale)

Spring practices around the ACC are in the books, and now the long wait for fall camp begins. So what did we learn? Clemson’s QB battle is still wide open. The same can be said for Miami and Virginia Tech. Cam Akers looks like the real deal. Pitt’s defense remains a question. There’s energy at places like Duke and NC State. There’s lingering concern about the O-line at Louisville. So, where does the ACC stand as we turn the calendar to May? Here are our post-spring power rankings.

1. Florida State Seminoles

Akers leads a deep corps of running backs that was impressive enough this spring to ease any concerns about the loss of Dalvin Cook. The return of Derwin James adds to a defense that should be excellent, too. Our big concern: Who’s catching the football? It’s a legitimate worry, but one FSU can find an answer to, and that makes the Seminoles our preseason favorite and a serious contender for the College Football Playoff.

12. Boston College Eagles

BC did a good job of winning games against mediocre (or worse) competition last year. Against better teams though? It was a train wreck. This season largely depends on the continued strong play of the defense and the development of an in-house QB.

13. Syracuse Orange

The defense is still young, and until we see evidence the Orange are ready to stop a few teams on that side of the ball, it’s hard to be overly enthusiastic about the progress of the offense. We love Eric Dungey, and Dino Babers’ system should put up points, but in the brutally tough Atlantic, that may not be nearly enough.

Mahoney: NYS Fair gondola might not happen because of funding constraints (PS; Lohmann)

Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney said funding constraints for a new round of spending for State Fair projects might mean the $15 million gondola won't be built after all, at least not this year.

She told radio host Brent Axe on Monday evening that costs for the expo center, another State Fair project funded this year, might exceed the $35 million it has been funded for. That might mean there won't be money for the gondola.

"If the price tag gets too big, that will come before the gondola and we might have to put it off again."

Mahoney did not say when funding became an issue, and did not mention any possible slowdown in the gondola being built in an interview late last week with Syracuse.com.

The state budget passed in April contained $70 million in new funding for the fairgrounds -- $35 million for the expo center, $15 million for the gondola and $20 million for an on-ramp at the fair's Orange Lot.

Mahoney's announcement about the possible delay came after she gave Axe a strong defense for the new project, saying it would be a boon to tourism and economic development in and around the fairgrounds.

Mahoney could not immediately be reached for comment Monday evening.

She said "experts" consulting fair officials said the expo center, which will host equestrian and other events, might cost more money than anticipated depending on the types of horse shows to be held
there.

Anyone know what Terrel Hunt is up to? Hope he's doing well, that poor guy was snakebite with injuries. He was so good to Dan. An impressive young man who even came to his wake and stood for an hour in line to pay his respects. If anyone knows an update, would love to hear about it. Thank you.

I know he was up on campus in March, throwing passes to AET when he was working out for scouts on SU's Pro Day.

Amba Etta-Tawo's pro day sees a fast 40 and an explanation for his breakout season
