Welcome to International Nurses Day!

In January 1974, May 12 was chosen as the day as it is the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth – the woman who is seen as the founder of modern nursing.

Here are some facts you may not know about the woman who was hailed as a heroine in Victorian times.

1. Florence grew up in a wealthy family in Romsey, Hampshire, mingling with other rich children and spending her time attending parties and seeing friends.

2. That all changed on February 7 1837, when she was 16 – she became convinced that the voice of God was calling to her, and believed that He wanted her to carry out special work.
3. When she reached her twenties, she began to believe that God wanted her to be a nurse, after taking an interest in how the sick people in the villages around her home were taken care of.

Ernie Davis becomes the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy (theundefeated.com; Walker)

Ernie Davis, a two-time All-American halfback at Syracuse University, lived a short life as a result of leukemia. He died at age 23 in 1963, but managed to lead his high school basketball team to a 52-game winning streak, help Syracuse win its only national football title and become the No. 1 pick in the 1961 NFL draft.

On Dec. 6, 1961, he became the first African-American to win the prestigious Heisman Trophy.

Coming out of high school, Davis had his pick of schools to attend, but Syracuse — a school only 90 miles away from his home — stood above the fray. From 1954 to 1956, the Orangemen boasted Jim Brown, who starred for Syracuse at halfback and went on to become a legend for the Cleveland Browns.

“I wanted to play in the big-time,” Davis said, “and a lot of people, including Jim Brown, persuaded me that I’d have better opportunities there.”

Davis led the freshman team to its first unbeaten season and did so as the lone black player on the team. Many had him pegged as the “next Jim Brown,” and Davis even wore Brown’s No. 44 during his sophomore campaign, in which he led the team in yards (686), yards per carry (7), and scored eight rushing touchdowns (10 total).

Defense should dominate, but offense might still decide ACC champ (espn; Hale)

The NFL draft came and went, and with it, the ACC waved goodbye to the likes of Deshaun Watson, Mitch Trubisky, Mike Williams, Bucky Hodges, Jordan Leggett, Dalvin Cook, James Conner — the list goes on and on.

Funny thing about that list: It includes a whole lot of offensive players.

And a funny thing about another list — Mel Kiper’s way-too-early big board — is it includes only defensive players from the ACC.

Long story short, the league is stacking up to be a bit one-sided this season, and the folks at SB Nation offered even more evidence as to why the ACC in 2017 “will look more like the SEC.”

From SB Nation:

In the last 20 drafts, 70 more ACC defensive players than offensive players have been selected (344-274). Nine times in those 20 drafts, at least five more defensive players were picked than offensive players, but the reverse had never happened -- until 2017. In this most recent draft, nine more offensive players were picked than defensive prospects, more than double the previous offensive surplus of four.

Here’s what the ACC’s extended football agreement with Notre Dame means (newsobserver.com; Giglio)

Notre Dame will continue to get the best of both worlds from the ACC through at least 2037.

The conference announced an extension of its football agreement with the Fighting Irish on Thursday. Notre Dame, a member of the ACC in all sports but football, will play five ACC teams every year from 2026 through ’37.

Notre Dame gets to retain its football independence while the ACC’s television contract gets a boost from the home dates its teams have with the Irish (All Notre Dame’s home games are still on NBC).

Notre Dame also gets to participate in the ACC’s bowl tie-ins and access to its annual spotlight national game on Labor Day.

[Notre Dame adds 12 new football matchups against Duke, UNC, NC State through 2037]

The ACC and Notre Dame began their relationship in 2014 and the Irish have played an average of five ACC teams per season since and have a 9-6 record in those games.

Syracuse University names new dean of Whitman School of Management (PS; McMahon)

Syracuse University has named Eugene Anderson the next dean of the Martin J. Whitman School of Management.

Anderson was selected after a months-long process, which included bringing three candidates to campus for public forums.

The office of dean was vacated by the removal of Kenneth Kavajecz in September 2016. Kavajecz was arrested for patronizing a prostitute in the town of Salina.

He will assume the role of dean on July 1.

Provost Michele Wheatly said in a statement Anderson was chosen for his accomplishments in the business field and his ability to attract top-notch students and faculty to the Whitman School.

Under Anderson's guidance, the Miami business school improved its Bloomberg BusinessWeek ranking among MBA programs from 72 to 47, according to an SU press release.

SU officials also noted Anderson's efforts to diversity the school's student body, and increase tenure-track faculty as highlights of his resume.

Prior to his time at the University of Miami, Anderson taught and served as an administrator at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business for more than two decades.

What are "efforts to diversity"?
Shouldn't there be tests before we let people write for a living?
