National-Graham-Cracker-Day-July-5.jpg

Welcome to National Graham Cracker Day!

National Graham Cracker Day is observed annually on July 5th. The graham cracker was originally invented as a “health food” as part of the “Graham Diet”. Developed by Presbyterian minister, Sylvester Graham in the early 1800s, graham crackers were originally made from whole-wheat graham flour with added bran and wheat germs. The minister believed this snack would curb a variety of sinful cravings.

Modern graham crackers are made with bleached white flour and come in a variety of flavors including honey, cinnamon and chocolate. While a delicious snack on their own, they are also terrific ingredients for desserts. Crushed graham crackers blended with butter and pressed into pie tins or springform pans make excellent crusts when lightly toasted. One of the most popular treats made with graham crackers is the S’more.

ACC assistant coach claims Clemson steals signs (tigernet.com; Crumpton)

Athlon Sports released their latest College Football Preview magazine and had an interesting tidbit from an anonymous ACC assistant coach claiming that Clemson steals signs.

“They’ll steal your signals,” the opposing coach said. “People don’t want to talk about it, but the teams that give them fits were NC State and Pitt because they huddled.”

The accusation sounds like sour apples by the ACC coach as this past season Clemson went on to win their first National Championship since 1981 and the future appears brighter than ever for the football program.

In actuality, one of the main reasons that North Carolina State and Pittsburgh had similar offensive success with Clemson is that Matt Canada was the talented offensive coordinator for the Wolfpack (2015) and Panthers (2016). He employed a similar multiple scheme attack that confused the Tigers' defense on several occasions.

Advice for salty football coaches -- If your signs are so vulnerable that any team or support staff can quickly learn it during the contest, that's on your crappy signs.

Why North Carolina Is Toughest Team To Predict In ACC Coastal (fanragsports.com; Carroll)

Take a look at North Carolina’s 2017 football schedule. You’ll get a headache as you try to pinpoint wins and losses.

It’s an unusual year for Tar Heel football. The school should have no trouble selling game programs this fall, because fans will thumb their way through the booklets to familiarize themselves with all of the new names. Ryan Switzer, T.J. Logan, Bug Howard, Elijah Hood, Des Lawrence and Nazair Jones — all major contributors for the better part of the Larry Fedora era — are now gone. Even quarterback Mitch Trubisky, who went No. 2 to the Chicago Bears in April’s NFL Draft, has departed after playing the star role for one year.

UNC’s depth will be put to the test this season, which might not be a bad thing for the program given its recruiting success in recent years. Either way, the smart money is on… well… neither betting for nor against this team.

It’s true that every team in the ACC’s Coastal Division has at least one substantial question mark for 2017. However, most have more answers than UNC.

Georgia Tech must replace deadly triple-option operator Justin Thomas, but it returns 18 starters. Despite an ongoing quarterback battle of its own, Miami will boast one of the nation’s top defensive fronts. Although Virginia Tech said goodbye to some of the centerpieces of its ACC runner-up squad, the Hokies bring back six players who have made an All-ACC team at some point in their careers. Duke is coming off a 4-8 campaign, but the Devils are healthy with quality young talent. Pitt lost most of its starters, including touchdown machine James Conner, but proven, All-ACC-caliber players remain on both sides of the ball. Virginia — OK, Virginia is still Virginia until proven otherwise.

Cycle in the City takes bikers through downtown Syracuse and local neighborhoods (DO; Fogol)

Although National Bike Month has passed, Syracuse bikers can still enjoy a group-ride each month, from now through October with Cycle in the City.

Started in 2010, Cycle in the City was part of the “Eat Well Play Hard Community Projects” with help from a grant provided by the Gifford Foundation.

“Most people keep coming back,” Bob Dougherty, a Cycle in the City organizer, said. “They look forward to what the rides are going to be. We’ve got over 200 people on our mailing list. We send out an email every month telling people not only where we’re going, but what the ride’s going to be like.”

One Sunday at 9 a.m. each month, the group has a 10-mile ride and a 15- to 20-mile ride. Dougherty said the 10-mile ride is an easier ride that has some novice and also older riders, and the 15- to 20-mile ride is for people to go farther and faster.

It would appear that stealing Clemson's signs is cool. It's on them if they are crappy ;)
