Welcome to 44 Days Until SU Football Starts!

Number 44 at Syracuse University is one of the most fabled numbers ever associated with a college football program. Since 1954, 11 players have worn the number and three have earned All-American honors. Those three—Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, and Floyd Little—rank among the finest running backs ever to play the college game.

The number 44 came to mean so much to Syracuse University, that years ago it changed its phone prefix to 443 and ZIP code to 13244. Those numbers remain, but no Orange football player will wear 44 again. In 2005, SU retired the number and the jersey now proudly hangs in the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse football inside receiver Erv Philips named to Biletnikoff Award Watch List (PS; Bailey)

Syracuse football inside receiver Erv Philips was named to the Biletnikoff Award Preseason Watch List on Tuesday. The honor is given annually to the nation's top receiver, regardless of position.

Philips, a senior, is arguably the Orange's top returning offensive threat. He posted 90 receptions, 822 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns last season -- all second on the team behind Amba Etta-Tawo -- en route to earning All-ACC honorable mention by the coaches and media.

During the offseason, Philips has focused on improving his consistency. He rewatched every game from last year and noted each of his individual mistakes.

SU is expected to begin preseason camp in about two weeks with the season opener against Central Connecticut State set for Sept. 1.

The Moment We’ve All Been Waiting For… Syracuse Football (itlh.com; Edsen Sr)

We’re in the girth of Summer and that can only mean one thing. That Syracuse football isn’t that far away. ITLH breaks down the emotion leading in.

Most people say the most wonderful time of the year is the holidays, gathering with friends and family and celebrating whatever it is that you believe in. Well for this journalist the most wonderful time of the year is the beginning of the Syracuse football season.

I think back to my youth, back when two-a-days were not only allowed but were a respite from three-a-day practices. The sun beating down on you as you sweat out the sins of the Summer. Losing weight both from shuttle drills and heat stress induced vomiting. Ah yes those were the days.

Getting your gear issued and strapping on the shoulder pads for the first time, hitting the sled and pushing it across the field. The effort put in on those days paid off on Thanksgiving when you still had reserves in your gas tank.

Nowadays fandom has taken over and excitement of everyone’s team being undefeated, waiting to find out if the offseason recruiting and excitement around Orange is the New Fast will produce a bowl invitation. The Spring game now long gone with the home opener just a few weeks away.

This writer, now lives in Mississippi but still has roots of Orange, is eager to see if Eric Dungey can improve on his impressive stats (335 yards/game passing with a 64 completion percentage) which eclipsed the eventual Heisman winner by a wide margin.

Mahoney Earns Spot on Wuerffel Trophy Watch List (cuse.com)

Syracuse senior quarterback Zack Mahoney was one of a record 109 FBS players named to the preseason watch list for the 2017 Wuerffel Trophy on Tuesday, July 18. The Wuerffel Trophy is presented annually by the All Sports Association of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. to the college football player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

Mahoney is president of the Syracuse University chapter of Uplifting Athletes, a nonprofit organization made up of a national network of chapters dedicated to inspiring the rare-disease community through the power of sport. In his role as president, Mahoney is organizing the 2017 "Lift for Life," which will be held Wednesday, July 19 at Manley Field House. Last year's event raised more than $20,000 to benefit those affected by rare diseases.

In addition to his work with Uplifting Athletes, Mahoney is a member of the Syracuse Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and received the 2016 ACC Top Six for Service Award for his dedication to serving others and commitment to community outreach programs. A member of the 2016 All-ACC Academic Team, Mahoney holds a bachelor's degree in communication and rhetorical studies from Syracuse University. He is currently enrolled in SU's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication where he is pursuing a master's degree in public relations.

Since joining the Orange in 2015, Mahoney has played in 18 games with seven starts. He has thrown for 1,478 career yards and 15 touchdowns, including 943 yards and eight scores in 2016. In last year's season finale at Pittsburgh, Mahoney set the school record with seven touchdowns responsible for including tying the SU single-game standard with five TD passes.

NC State is dramatically improving, but so is the ACC (sbnation.com; Connelly)

The ACC might have been the best league in the country last year. From the perspective of S&P+ averages, the SEC barely held onto the top spot (which is why this countdown is previewing ACC teams right now and not SEC teams yet), but if you get points for winning the national title, the Heisman, and of course the Piesman, the ACC gets the nod.

Clemson and Florida State have emerged as two of the surest things in the sport, but the strength has been the middle class. In addition to two top-six teams, five ACC teams ranked between 12th and 25th in S&P+.

This is great news for the league. But it’s making it difficult to gauge how teams are actually doing.

For most of last season, I saw vague references to NC State coach Doeren being close to the hot seat. As I sometimes get stuck in my ratings world and forget about records, this had me confused.

ACC Blog (espn; Hale)

Mark Richt dodged plenty of questions about his quarterback situation last week, insisting four players still have a chance at the job. And he’s eager to see each of them take reps when camp opens. Still, the mystery looms large. Miami is the pick to win the ACC Coastal, and certainly the surrounding talent appears good enough to do just that.

Then Richt was posed another fair question about QBs. Does his mystery at Miami mean as much given similar status at Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, North Carolina and Virginia Tech? Isn’t the Coastal simply one big QB question mark?

If Jones’ rapid development was a bit lost in the shuffle last year, Syracuse QB Eric Dungey might be working even more under the radar.

Injuries derailed Dungey’s season the past two years, but despite working in two completely different systems, he’s completed 63 percent of his throws and accounted for 37 touchdowns in just 16 career starts. In coach Dino Babers’ high-flying offense this year, his stat line could explode. In fact, just combine the numbers of Dungey and his backup, Zack Mahoney, from 2016 and you’ll get a line (31 touchdowns, 3,962 yards, 15 turnovers) that pretty closely resembles that of Alabama’s Jalen Hurts (3,774/36/14).

Motorcyclist pushed 150 feet by tractor trailer in Liverpool; hospitalized (PS; Knauss)

A slow-moving tractor trailer struck a motorcycle and pushed the bike and its rider about 150 feet under the front bumper until another motorist alerted the truck driver, Onondaga County sheriff's deputies said tonight.

The motorcyclist, 27-year-old Steven McGill, of Brewerton, was sent to Upstate University Hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening, Sgt. Jon Seeber said.

The accident occurred at about 6:36 p.m. on Vine Street near the intersection with Oswego Street in the village of Liverpool.

A Wegmans delivery tractor trailer began to travel southbound on Vine Street after the traffic light turned green at the intersection with Oswego Street, deputies said. The tractor trailer struck a 2006 Suzuki motorcycle in front of it, which the driver of the tractor trailer did not see, deputies said.
