Syracuse football recruiting: 3-star Georgia OL Oyenmwen Uzebu to visit Monday (PS; Bailey)

Class of 2018 offensive lineman Oyenmwen Uzebu will visit Syracuse football on Monday, he announced on Twitter.

Uzebu said via Twitter direct message that his trip to Central New York will last extend into Tuesday.

Syracuse Visit tomorrow![?] @RecruitGeorgia@CuseFootball CMAnderson247 @rivalskeenan

-- Junior Uzebu (@junior_uzebu) July 23, 2017

The 6-foot-6, 305-pound Alpharetta (Ga.) High School prospect is rated three stars and the No. 45 offensive tackle in the Class of 2018 by 247Sports.com's composite rankings. He named SU to his Top 5 schools on June 26, along with West Virginia, South Florida, Maryland and North Carolina State.

Uzebu, who is coming off a trip to NC State, also holds offers from Pittsburgh, Minnesota and Kansas, among others.

The Orange currently has 11 players pledged to its Class of 2018, including two offensive linemen in center Tyrone Sampson and tackle Willem Froumy. SU hosted another tackle prospect, four-star Bronx native Qadir White, two weeks ago.

Syracuse is also gearing up to host quarterback offeree Steven Krajewski on Tuesday.

College Football: Syracuse Star QB Eric Dungey a Key Player in ACC (Video) (herosports.com; Churchhill)

Eric Dungey was well on his way to a huge 2016 season as a sophomore when he went down with injury early at Clemson. He missed almost all of that game and the next three, but still ended the year with nearly 2,700 yards and 15 TD passes. He also ran for 293 yards and six scores.

Dungey is healthy and ready to go for 2017. His presence make the Orange offense one to reckon with. With Dungey under center, Syracuse scored 28 points versus Louisville, 31 at UCONN, 33 versus Notre Dame, 31 versus Virginia Tech and 28 at Boston College.

Syracuse Football: ‘Next Man Up’ Has Never Been More Prevalent (itlh.com; Esden Sr)

The Syracuse football team can’t catch a break. ITLH evaluates the rash of injuries the Orange have suffered before the season commences

Anyone that has ever played football is very familiar with the term ‘Next Man Up’.

When you’re playing a sport where for 20 second bursts you are locked in Mortal Kombat with people who spend all year lifting weights and training to lay you out, there are bound to be injuries.

This is where the ‘Next Man Up’ mantra was born. On any given Sunday the star (fill in the blank) goes out on a stretcher, then it’s time for his backup to step up and fill the void.

This same concept holds true in the revolving door of college football rosters. Students transfer, fail to maintain sufficient grades in Ballroom Dancing (Google Mark Sanchez’s last year at USC if you think I am kidding) or catch lightning in a bottle and get drafted. If your school is lucky enough you will have their replacement waiting in the wings to be the ‘Next Man Up’.

For a school that had an abysmal record last year. There was one thing we had a lot of and that was
quality wide receivers. The quartet of Amba Etta-Tawo, Ervin Philips, Brisly Estime and Steve Ishmaelcombined for 199 receptions, 3,411 yards and 24 touchdowns. This barbershop quartet’s talent did not go unnoticed by the NFL with two of them being signed as undrafted free agents. Amba Etta-Tawo signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Brisly Estime signed with the J-E-T-S (unfortunately Brisly was injured during practice and has been placed on injured reserve, best wishes for a speedy recovery).

But do not despair the cupboard is not empty by a long shot. We will have to see which of the two remaining seniors will be Next Man Up.

Preseason Football Is Near For Syracuse Football Squad (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Things are about to heat up for the Syracuse football squad with the preseason dates being announced by the University. ITLH breaks it all down

It’s official the Syracuse football team will kick things off with the 2017 preseason camp on Sunday July 30th per the University.

Can SU get the season started the same way they did last season?

If you remember last season the Orange got its’ first taste of Dino Babers’ high octane offense.

It was a showing of sorts to the fans and media, what to expect from this team. Several records were broken and it was a clear sign of things to come via Cuse.com Post Game Notes:

  • Ervin Philips hauled in a school-record 14 catches
  • Head coach Dino Babers became the first Orange head coach to win in his debut since Paul Pasqualoni in 1992
  • As a team, Syracuse threw for 437 yards on the night. It marked the most yards through the air by the Orange since 2012 against Northwestern.
Last year was Colgate.

This season they have Central Connecticut State. Another FCS opponent, this will be the fourth season that the Orange open up against an FCS opponent in the Carrier Dome.

SU has won 33 straight games against FCS opponents. The season opener is Friday September 1st in the Carrier Dome. Speaking of, the Orange will start the season with a three game home stand.

Syracuse Football Watchlist: Add McKinley Williams To Freak List (Video) (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

The Syracuse football team has an interesting cast of crew and characters. But perhaps none more intriguing than DT McKinley Williams
Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers has brought in a ton of talented players into the Syracuse program.

But perhaps none more athletic than defensive tackle McKinley Williams. Although before we get to Williams, the team could use some added help on the defensive line.

Earlier this week, SU lost two key members of their defense which put the defensive line dangerously thin, depth wise.

While I’m not sure if this is going to correlate to the field, it can’t hurt. It’s not everyday a 6’4 250+ pound man can do athletic things of this nature.

Don't know too many people this size that can do a backhand spring @PoppaBearrr3pic.twitter.com/NDt1dK3lsY

— Dino Babers (@CoachBabersCuse) July 20, 2017

Here’s some more information on the talented sophomore:

  • Hometown: Miramar, Florida
  • His nickname is “Bear”
  • A former three-star prospect

Former Syracuse football players and coaches remember their Ms. America, Patty Olgeaty (PS; Carlson)

Patty Olgeaty housed running back Joe Morris, fed linebacker Tony Romano and made sure coach Paul Pasqualoni didn't forget his wife's birthday. For 20 years she was the welcoming face for anyone arriving at the Syracuse football office.

On Sunday and Monday, a number of Syracuse football players will return to the area to remember a woman devoted to the idea that the SU football team should feel like a family. Olgeaty died on July 11 at 81 years old. She suffered from chronic lymphocytic leukemia and died from complications two weeks after an unrelated surgery.

Olgeaty died in Stuart, Fla., but the Syracuse community will say goodbye in Central New York, where she was born, met her husband at Solvay High School, raised four daughters, ran a youth cheerleading program and looked after groups of football players until 2007.

"She embodied all the great things about Syracuse," Romano said. "She always had a smile, she was always willing to help."

All eight of the pallbearers at her funeral on Monday will have ties to the SU football program, a nod to the impact she made working behind the scenes during the program's successful run during the 1980s, 90s and early 2000s.

Chef at Strada Mia takes the cooking crown at Onondaga Cup and Lakefest (PS; Gomez)

The Onondaga Cup and LakeFest Saturday and Sunday at Onondaga Lake did not only attract water sport lovers, but also people with a passion for cooking.

The Chobani Culinary Competition pitted eight local chefs against each other in a series of cooking elimination rounds to crown the best chef in Syracuse and featured guest appearances from people like chef Julie Taboulie, who hosted a book signing of her best-selling cookbook.

The chefs not only battled each other, but also the elements including the humid, hot weather and brief periods of rain.

Mark Pawliw, owner of Farm to Fork 101, an organization that connects chefs and consumers to local farms, said he and the other organizers made the competition bigger and better this year and also said the chefs that participated really put in a lot of work.

"Some of these chefs, after the competition yesterday, went back and cooked 180 meals at each of their individual restaurants and then came back today to do the competition again," Pawliw said.

The cooking competition, sponsored by Chobani, also served as a fundraiser for Clear Path for Veterans, and it required a team effort to put together. The produce and meat that were cooked were all donated by a host of local farms and companies including Main Street Farms, JFS Curtze, and Hofmann's Sausages.
