Welcome to National Lazy Day!

Today there will not be much information regarding this annually celebrated holiday as we do not feel like doing any research. Actually, we do not feel like doing anything at all. So we are in our hammocks with a couple of good books and glasses of lemonade and iced tea. Yes, it is National Lazy Day, and we choose to be lazy rather than tell you that this holiday is observed each year on August 10th. The creator and origin of National Lazy Day could not be found.

Remembering Coach Mac, Former Syracuse Football Head Coach (1045theteam.com; Park)

On Tuesday, former Syracuse football head coach Dick MacPherson died at the age of 86. The man who helped build a program for sustained success through the 80’s and 90’s was held in such high regard by Orange fans from his days on the sidelines to his post-coaching career in the broadcast booth.

The Voice of the Orange, Matt Park, grew to know Coach Mac as well as anyone and he lends his perspective on the man who led Syracuse to an undefeated season in 1987 and who was the defacto mayor of Syracuse in many ways.

MACPHERSON MEMORIES: Jim Mullins of Westport fondly recalls former UMass football coach (heraldnews.com; Sullivan)

It didn’t take Dick MacPherson long to endear himself to others.

For Jim Mullins of Westport, a few seconds at football practice did the trick. For Mullins’ parents, a few minutes chatting in a stadium grandstand made the impact.

The Mullins family, of course, was no exception to the rule. MacPherson, the former UMass Amherst, Syracuse University, and New England Patriots head coach, sincerely charmed the famous and not famous by simply being a good guy who genuinely cared about others.

MacPherson died on Tuesday in Syracuse. He was 86.

“As charismatic a guy as I ever met in sports,” said Mullins, a former sports journalist and now Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance at UMass Dartmouth. “When he spoke to you, he made you feel like the most important person in the room.”

MacPherson’s final season of a very successful tenure at UMass was 1977. That same year Mullins, a Somerset High graduate, made the UMass junior varsity team as a walk-on freshman placekicker.

During a jayvee practice, a UMass graduate assistant told Mullins his kicking services were needed with the varsity because, Mullins recalled, the first-string kicker had injured his ankle the previous weekend and was not practicing.

Mullins made the 150-yard sprint from the jayvee field to the varsity area and helped with a handful of special teams drills – deep kicks, short kicks, squib kicks, onside kicks. “I even made a couple point afters and field goals,” Mullins said. “I was scared stiff.”

Seth Megginson: Five bold ACC football predictions (augustafreepress.co; Megginson)

The college football season is set to kickoff in a few weeks, and the ACC has plenty of storylines heading into the season.

Can Clemson repeat as champions? Will FSU retake the ACC crown? Will Miami finally breakthrough in the coastal or is Tech still the favorite?

Here are a few bold predictions for the ACC season.

Florida State will be the first team to lose two games and make the college football playoff
Florida State is the favorite to win the ACC and one of the favorites to win the national title. That being said the Seminoles have plenty of obstacles in their way. The Noles kickoff the season with Alabama and the conference schedule does them no favors. FSU will play Louisville, NC State and Miami at home but must make a trip to Death Valley against Clemson. The prediction is that Florida State falls on opening weekend to Alabama, and suffers one more loss in conference but still manages to make the ACC title game and win the conference. That will lead FSU to be the first team that has lost two games and still make the college football playoff, perhaps even a rematch with Alabama will be in the Noles future.

Miami and Florida State will finally meet in the ACC title game
In the 12 years that the ACC has had a championship not once has the match up that the conference wanted for the title has happened. That game is FSU against rival Miami. This year both teams seem to be the favorites in their divisions and both teams return strong defenses and playmakers on offense. Its hard to believe that this matchup has not been for the ACC title since the Hurricanes joined the ACC in 2004, but hard times have fallen on the Canes in the past decade. Under Mark Richt things are looking up for Miami now. In Richts second year he will lead the Canes into an all Florida ACC championship game giving Miami their first coastal division title.

Finally Ours on Onondaga Hill is one of Syracuse's best diners (Dining Out Review) (PS; Marmaduke Woodman)

We expect three things from any good diner: fast service, a friendly atmosphere and good food. Syracuse is lucky to have several choices where people can expect all three.

But meeting those standards was not enough for Lisa and Dave Laffin, veterans of Syracuse diner culture, formerly of The Gem and now owners of Finally Ours, their own very busy corner of the diner world on Onondaga Hill.

At Finally Ours, three additional qualities added to the basics explain why the place is almost always full when we pass by. Each one shows an attention to detail and their customers' comfort unusual in most diners.

Look at the table, and you see less waste because of the sugar in containers rather than in paper packets. Look up, and you see hanging acoustic tiles that muffle a bit of the racket characteristic of happy, busy diners. Taste your homemade food, and you know that saltiness is left to diners' discretion. We appreciated all three differences during our recent Wednesday visit.

The menu is filled with all the standards one expects, from omelets and pancakes to garbage plates and club sandwiches. Vegetarian and gluten-free diners can find something to eat at Finally Ours, but the options are found by picking through the traditional choices and leaving things off rather than by choosing from sections meant for restricted diets.
