National Bratwurst Day is dedicated to bratwursts—sometimes simply known as brats—which are sausages made from pork, veal, or beef, that contain sweet spices and seasonings such as nutmeg. They originated in Nuremberg, Germany, in the 14th century, and their name is derived from the German words "braten", meaning "to fry" or "to roast", and "wurst", meaning "sausage". There are over forty varieties of brats made in Germany, and they are many times served on a roll with mustard. They are also quite often accompanied by sauerkraut and potato salad. They were introduced to the United States in the mid-19th century by German immigrants, and have become especially popular in Wisconsin.

Orange stripe signifies it's almost time for football in Syracuse (CNYCentral.com)
It's almost football season and the Marriott Syracuse Downtown is painting an orange stripe on Warren Street to celebrate.
On Tuesday the hotel also announced a new way to tailgate before Syracuse University home games. The hotel will close a block of Warren Street for three hours before each home game for a family-friendly party.
There will be food trucks, games and live music at the block parties, hotel officials say. A free shuttle will also run up to the Carrier Dome and back.
"It's also a celebration of bringing back downtown and bringing back SU sports," manager Ed Reilly said. The Marriott Syracuse Downtown Hotel has also been named the official hotel of Syracuse University athletics.
Hotel officials say they're looking into doing something indoors for the basketball games during the winter.

Florida State football: Cam Akers leads way of possible ACC breakout players (diehards.com; Wilson)
Every college football season brings it with new breakouts stars, such as Washington quarterback Jake Browning was last season. So who will it be this year? CBS Sports’ Ben Kercheval offered up his thoughts on who it could be this year, with Florida State football running back Cam Akers leading the way.
Akers, a freshman, was the No. 1 running back recruit in the nation, according to 247Sports. He is one of the running backs in line to help fill Dalvin Cook’s shoes.
“Akers has the skill for a big year, but he also plays in an offense where he’ll be featured right away and on a team that should win a lot of games,” Kercheval wrote. “Recruiting folks and college football die-hards know about Akers now; the entire college football world should know him soon.”
The list featured 15 potential breakout players for the coming season and while Akers was the first player on the list, three more ACC players joined him: Miami linebacker Zach McCloud, Clemson wide receiver Amari Rodgers and Notre Dame defensive end Daelin Hayes.
On McCloud: “‘Inside the U’ noted that McCloud was one of the most improved players in the offseason after finishing with 37 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss as a freshman. The Hurricanes have a trio of great sophomore linebackers who made an impact last year. Of those three, McCloud could be in for the biggest jump in Year 2.”

Boston College Announces Fan Council (bcinterruption.com; Berestecki)
Earlier this summer, Martin Jarmond announced his intent to form a fan council to help improve the game day experience for fans at Boston College games, particularly football. Today, Boston College announced the names of the 21 members that will make up the fan council, in addition to announcing intentions for a secondary fan council that will focus on winter sports. The secondary fan council will be comprised of individuals that had applied to be on the initial fan council.
The 2017-18 fan council is made up of donors, season ticket holders, former student-athletes, current students, local community members, and other fans.
This year’s fan council is made up of the following individuals: Brett Burns, Michael Conway, Hailey Corcoran, Kim Desto, Catherine Dillon, David Dripchak, Sadiq Ervin, Bill Ferguson, Kim Gerard, Scott Heslin, Chuck Keefe, Hailey Kobza, Travis Looker, Daniel Macchio, Barry Mitchell Jr., Richard Reynolds, Jay Salamone, Pamela Shalvoy, Alexa Squitieri, Jane Stanton, and Anne Woodbury.
The fan council cannot be expect to immediately solve all of the issues with BC’s game day experience, but making sure that Jarmond and his staff are hearing from a variety of fans is a good start.

Historic B-17 swoops into Central New York offering spectacular flights
The Liberty Foundation, a nonprofit flying museum based in Claremore, Okla., brought its "Madras Maiden" B-17 to Syracuse Monday in preparation for public tours and flights this weekend.
Ground tours will be free. For $450 a person, members of the public will be able to take 30-minute flights in the bomber. (See details below on how to tour or hitch a ride in the bomber.)
