Welcome to National Felt Hat Day!

This day is dedicated to felt hats. Felt made from wool is the world's oldest textile, and felt can also be made from the furs of rabbits and beavers. To create felt, pressure is applied to the wool or fur, as well as moisture and heat, which causes the fibers of the materials to interlock. There are many types of felt hats:
  • Ascot cap- hard felt; similar to flat cap
  • Beret- usually of woollen felt; soft and round cap; traditionally associated with the French, Basque people, and the military
  • Bicorne- broad brimmed with brim folded up and pinned in front and back; worn by European military officers in 1790's; associated with Napoleon
  • Bowler- hard felt; created around 1850 in London; also known as Derby hat in the United States; worn by Charlie Chaplin and Laurel & Hardy
  • Fedora- soft felt; medium brim; lengthwise crease in crown; associated with gangsters and Prohibition; worn by Frank Sinatra
  • Fez- red felt; cone shaped; many times has a tassel; popular in Arab-speaking countries
  • Kolah namadi- worn by men in rural areas of Iran
  • Porkpie- low flat crown and narrow brim; worn by Buster Keaton and by Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad
  • Slouch- worn by military leaders; less fancy versions are called bush hats
  • Sombrero- Mexican hat; cone-like crown and wide brim
  • Top hat- versions such as beaver hat, magician's hat, or top hat; tall, flat-crowned, and cylindrical; popularly worn by men in the 19th and early 20th centuries; worn by Abraham Lincoln and Uncle Sam
  • Trilby- soft felt; deeply indented crown; narrow brim often upturned in back
  • Tyrolean hat- originated in Alps; has corded band with feather
  • Western- can be made of felt or many other materials; wide brimmed; brim usually turned up at sides

Central Michigan Chippewas vs. Syracuse Orange Preview and Prediction (athlonsports.com; Josephs)

The opening portion of Syracuse's schedule has a definite home flavor, with five of the first seven games in the Carrier Dome. But the schedule takes a steep turn toward increased difficulty after Saturday's home matchup against Central Michigan. The Orange lost last week 30-23 to Middle Tennessee in a game that saw the defense struggle to slow down Blue Raiders QB Brent Stockstill. Central Michigan is 2-0 after beating FCS member Rhode Island and Kansas, and the Chippewas are in the middle of a span of four road games in five weeks.

These two teams played in New York back in 2015 with the Orange winning 30-27 as a 7.5-point favorite. They somehow held on despite being outgained and allowing 30 first downs. We'll see if they can hold down this year's version of the Chippewas.

5 reasons Syracuse football will win, 5 reasons Central Michigan will win (PS; Mink)

Syracuse football is 1-1 and hosts Central Michigan at 3:30 Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Dome (ACC Network Extra).

Nate Mink gives you five reasons Syracuse will win and five reasons Central Michigan will win.

THE POWER OF 208 EARS
Syracuse watched the complete Middle Tennessee State game Sunday as a team, going through the mental lapses that led to the Orange's 30-23 loss.

Expect to see a more focused offense this week that mitigates the mental errors and dropped passes.

Syracuse knows it needs great, consistent play from Eric Dungey, Steve Ishmael and Ervin Philips to move the ball. I think they'll be ready to bounce back after a pedestrian effort last week.

A Q&A with Nunes Magician: Syracuse vs. Central Michigan (hustlebelt.com; Jimenez)

Week 3 presents an intriguing situation for both squads scehduled to play a game of football at Syracuse’s Carrier Dome this Saturday.

The Central Michigan Chippewas (2-0, 0-0 MAC) are coming in surging, but hurting, after a big win over Kansas on the road. They’ll be without some key contributors in an upset bid as they seek to stay undefeated in their out-of-conference slate.

The Syracuse Orange (1-1, 0-0 ACC), meanwhile, come into this matchup after an embarassing loss to Middle Tennessee State, which employs their former head coach as a defensive coordinator. A loss to CMU would make for an upward hill to climb for bowl eligibilty.

And that’s before we even get into the emotional leftovers from the 2015 game that will be surely be floating around Syracuse’s famed dome on Saturday.

We asked John Cassillo, SB Nation’s foremost Syracuse expert and managing editor of Troy Nunes Is An Absolute Magician, what to expect coming into Saturday’s game.

Hustle Belt: Walk me through the Syracuse-MTSU game. What went wrong? How do you think Dino Babers will try and fix it?

John Cassillo: Former Orange head coach Scott Shafer is the new defensive coordinator for the Blue Raiders, and since he recruited many of the current contributors on the SU roster, he seemed to read us like a book. Middle Tennessee's blitz kept Eric Dungey out of rhythm the entire game, and a poorly-timed outbreak of dropped passes (eight on the game) also helped derail the offense. The offensive line and run game are both disasters, which has created some panic in the fan base.

Watch demolition of former Nestle plant in Fulton (video) (PS; Long)

A crew spent the day tearing apart one of the remaining buildings at the long-closed Nestle plant. A section of Route 481 will be closed near the factory again on Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. while the top two floors of the building are taken down.

After that, two-way traffic will resume in the two south-bound lanes, while Rowlee Construction Inc. continues to tear down the rest of the building. The rightmost lanes will continue to be closed during that time.

City of Fulton officials said this is the final phase of demolition for the plant, which closed in 2003. Workers started knocking it down in early 2016.
