Scouting Clemson’s next opponent: Syracuse Orange (thestate.com; Connolly)

Three story lines
1. Clemson starting quarterback Kelly Bryant injured his ankle against Wake Forest, and his status for Friday’s game will be determined later in the week. The Tigers are inexperienced behind Bryant with a pair of freshmen in Hunter Johnson and Zerrick Cooper.

2. Syracuse looks improved in Dino Babers’ second season. The Orange played LSU and N.C. State tough on the road, losing by single digits, and beat Pittsburgh 27-24 on Saturday. Syracuse gave Clemson a tough game at home two seasons ago before falling to the Tigers by a score of 37-27.

3. This is the start of a brutal stretch of games for Syracuse. The Orange host Clemson before back-to-back games at Miami and Florida State.

Three players to watch
1. Quarterback Eric Dungey leads the Orange in rushing and passing. The junior has 325 rushing yards and eight scores and has passed for 1,802 yards and nine touchdowns. Dungey is No. 3 in the nation in total offense with 2,127 yards.

2. Senior receiver Steve Ishmael leads the nation in receiving yards with 729 through six games. The Miami native is averaging 13 yards per reception and 121.5 yards per game.

3. Linebacker Parris Bennett leads Syracuse in tackles with 56 and tackles for loss with 5.5. The senior has recovered a fumble and forced a fumble.

Clemson Football: Will Kelly Bryant play on Friday vs. Syracuse? (rubbingtherock.com; Boardwine)

It’s the question every Clemson football fan is wondering. Will quarterback Kelly Bryant play against the Syracuse Orange on Friday?
Clemson football quarterback Kelly Bryant went down with an injury on Saturday and since then has set Tiger nation on fire.

We’ve received several questions and inquiries wanting to know if Bryant will be available on Friday against Syracuse.

Here is what has been reported so far and what we think will play out this week from things we’ve heard and seen.

What they’re saying:

  • Kelly Bryant was asked by a reporter after the game and wouldn’t say one way or another if he would play on Friday. He said he rolled it and didn’t want to hurt it any more than what it already was. Bryant was wearing a boot on the ankle.
  • On Saturday, as well, Dabo Swinney indicated that Bryant had rolled it and that they would undergo the procedure to see how he was doing this week.
  • Sunday night, during the weekly media teleconference, Swinney let everybody know that the injury was not serious and that he is listed as day-to-day.
“Kelly is going to be just fine. He’ll be limited today [Sunday], but he’ll be able to practice this week,” Swinney said. “If he can’t play, we’ll go to the next guy.”

What we think:

Kelly Bryant was in a lot of pain on Saturday and that was clear. He rolled his ankle and that can hurt, but it doesn’t seem that anything is serious.

In my opinion, from all the information we have right now, Kelly Bryant will be able to play on Friday.

Sunday Sidebar: More Than the Dynamic Duo (cuse.com)

Senior receivers Steve Ishmael and Ervin Philips have received most the headlines this season and for good reason. They rank No. 1 and No. 2 in the ACC in receptions and are among the top five nationally, but it was complementary players like junior Ravian Pierce and sophomore Devin C. Butler who made some of the biggest plays in the passing game during the Orange's 27-24 Homecoming win against Pittsburgh yesterday.

Pierce led all receivers with a career-high nine receptions for a personal-best 99 yards. He served as a reliable target for quarterback Eric Dungey, who completed eight passes to Pierce in the second half. The 6-3, 237-pounder from Plantation, Fla. flashed the downfield receiving ability, including a nifty one-handed grab, that made him the third-ranked tight end in the junior-college ranks coming out of Southwest Mississippi Community College.

Butler also had a career-game, snagging seven balls for a personal-best 64 yards. The second-year player also caught the first touchdown of his career, a 32-yard pass from Dungey that tied the game at 10-10 in the final minute of the first half.

In all, four different Syracuse receivers caught at least 50 yards worth of passes against the Panthers. Ishmael made five receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown, while Philips had eight catches for 55 yards, to go along with Pierce's and Butler's production.

"It puts a lot of pressure on defenses when you not only have to cover Steve and Erv, but also Devin and Ravian," Dungey said. "It's great to have weapons like them and it's great for them to get some confidence."

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney says quarterback Kelly Bryant is 'day to day' (greenvilleonline.com; Keepfer)

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Sunday evening that he expects junior quarterback Kelly Bryant, who suffered an ankle injury in the third quarter of Saturday’s 28-14 victory against Wake Forest, to be "ready to go” when the Tigers play at Syracuse Friday night.

“He came in today and was a little sore but moving around pretty good,” Swinney said. “He’ll be day to day, and we’ll see how he progresses through the week.”

Swinney would not reveal what his plan would be should Kelly not be able to play when the unbeaten and No. 2-ranked Tigers (6-0, 4-0 in ACC) visit Syracuse.

“We’ll have a plan, but I’m not going to lay it out for Syracuse,” Swinney said.

Swinney said Clemson’s schedule will move up a day this week, so the Tigers practiced Sunday night at 7 p.m. rather than having the day off as is customary. He expected Bryant not to be a full participant Sunday.

“Kelly will be just fine, but it’ll be a decision later this week,” Swinney said. “If he’s ready to play, he’ll go play. If he’s not, we’ll play the next guy.”

The “next guy” would be either redshirt freshman Zerrick Cooper or freshman Hunter Johnson, both of whom saw the most extensive playing time of their young careers against Wake Forest.

Syracuse Football: Orange Beat Panthers- Game Notes (itlh.com; Peelman)

Syracuse Football came into this game knowing they needed a win. They got it, 27-24. Inside The Loud House breaks down how the game went for the Orange.
Syracuse Football are back where they want to be at 3-3 due to a strong performance Saturday at home versus the Pittsburgh Panthers. The Orange finally found a way to win, 27-24, and did so with impressive defense. With #2 Clemson at home next week, this Syracuse Football team definitely needed a momentum builder, and they got one today.

Eric Dungey was special from the quarterback spot, especially when passing to Erv Philips and Steve Ishmael. Ishmael, the nations receptions leader, finished with five catches for 97 yards, according to ESPN.com. Meanwhile, Philips had 55 yards on eight catches.

Here’s some other things of note from this game:

  • Ishmael had a heck of a first quarter, but wasn’t seen much from again the rest of the game until he made a huge game-changing 35-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter.
  • Quarterback Eric Dungey had 215 yards passing alone in the first half, but only 10 points to show for it. However, he had 150 yards in the second half which led to 17 points. He finished the day 33 of 49 passing for 365 yards, 2 TD’s passing, and one rushing score.
  • The Orange defense didn’t give up a third down conversion until under 10 minutes in the 4th quarter. The Panthers finished the game 3 for 13 on third down.

Did the SU Running Game Finally Show Signs of Life? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)

A lot has been made this season of Syracuse’s inability to run the football. While the numbers might not reflect it, yesterday’s 27-24 win over Pittsburgh could go a long way towards changing that narrative. Dontae Strickland ran for 81 yards on 25 carries. An average of 3.24 yards per carry might not impress you, but the physicality of most of Strickland’s runs will.

On Saturday, Strickland ran the ball with a purpose. With just over seven minutes to go in the game, SU got the ball back with just a three-point lead. On that drive, Strickland had eight carries for 28 yards. No other Syracuse running back got a touch on that drive. The biggest takeaway is Strickland actually seemed comfortable in this game. He had 21 more carries than the next closest tailback, Chris Elmore. Not to mention, sophomore Moe Neal didn’t get a single carry in the game.

If Syracuse wants to continue to win games and possibly make a bowl appearance, keeping Strickland in rhythm is a must. We all know SU’s offense is going to pass more than it runs, but an effective ground game keeps opponents honest. The Panthers knew the Orange was going to try and milk the clock, but they couldn’t stop it anyway. Also, give credit to the offensive line. The front five actually did its job at times on Saturday and created a new line of scrimmage.

Sure, this is a step in the right direction, but the competition gets much tougher over the next several weeks. On Friday, Syracuse takes on Clemson before traveling to Miami and Florida State the following two weekends. This is the stretch of the schedule where we really find out what Strickland and the offensive line are made of.

FizzCast: Syracuse tops Pittsburgh 27-24 – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; fizzcast; Raucci and Hoppe)

JD Raucci and Jonathon Hoppe break down SU’s tight win over rival Pittsburgh on Saturday at the Carrier Dome. Is Eric Dungey elite? How diverse can this Syracuse offense be? Where the heck is Moe Neal? We have all the answers to those questions and more on this week’s FizzCast.

Syracuse Orange hold on to beat Pittsburgh 27-24, 1st time in 5 years | News, Sports, Jobs - The Express (lockhaven.com; AP)

After two disheartening road losses, the weight of the world has been lifted a bit off the Syracuse Orange.

Eric Dungey threw two touchdown passes and ran for another and the Syracuse defense stymied Pittsburgh’s offense on third down as the Orange held on for a 27-24 victory Saturday.

“It was good to finally get that monkey off our back. It’s our third close game,” Syracuse coach Dino Babers said. “All the way in the second half, five minutes to go, who’s going to win the game? You don’t know.

“To see the team rally together, and to have all three units play well, special teams, offense and defense, contributed to an ACC Atlantic win.”

Syracuse’s win was its first over the Panthers in five years and kept the team’s bowl hopes alive.

“With six games to play we have an opportunity to win more than half of them,” Babers said.” If we can do that we’ll be a bowl team. We haven’t been a bowl team in a long time.”

The schedule is daunting, however, with games against Clemson, Miami, Florida State and Louisville in the second half of the season. But wide receiver Devin C. Butler, who had a touchdown and personal highs of seven receptions for 64 yards, believes things are starting to fall into place.

Coach states the truth , Speed hides so many mistakes and is so hard to over come. In the Pros even the bad teams still have guys who can run. A scheme can mask some of the issues, but bigger and faster and stronger is a tough combo. The difference between our skill and their skill is still too great unless we limit mistakes and take advantage of the ones they will make.
