Welcome to Dress Like a Dork Day!

Dorks are social misfits, similar to nerds or geeks, who are out-of-touch, which leads to them looking or acting odd around others. Maybe you were a dork when you were growing up, or maybe you were one of the meanies who beat them up. Nonetheless, today is a day to dress like a dork.

Dress Like a Dork Day is being observed today! It has always been observed annually on October 19th.

Scout: Eric Dungey's accuracy, improvement over next year will determine NFL stock (PS; Mink)

Syracuse football quarterback Eric Dungey has been a productive player for a couple years, but before last weekend acclaim for his playmaking ability has largely been confined to the Central New York bubble and has sparsely spread to a few people who closely follow the ACC.

Before last weekend, there were flashpoints: his leap over Virginia's Quin Blanding freshman year, his do-everything performance in a 31-17 victory against No. 17 Virginia Tech last season.

Leading Syracuse football to a stunning, 27-24 victory against No. 2 Clemson drove Dungey's penchant for dynamic plays to a broader audience, something that now raises a fascinating question with five games remaining in his junior season ahead of Saturday afternoon's 3:30 kick at No. 8 Miami.

What does this mean for his NFL potential?

Dan Shonka, of OurLads.com, has done player evaluation for more than four decades. He previously worked as a scout for the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs and the USFL's Philadelphia Stars.

He was gracious with his time Wednesday afternoon to give an early evaluation of Dungey and a few other Syracuse players.

Miami vs. Syracuse Fearless Prediction & Game Preview (collegefootballnews.com; Fiutak)

Syracuse took down the Atlantic lead dog, now can it handle the Coastal’s big star?

Beating Clemson was stunning, but it showed Syracuse really could play. Beat Miami on the road, though, and then the program will show that it’s put it all together under Dino Babers.

The Orange lost to NC State – they don’t control their own ACC destiny – but they can still screw things up. The schedule is way too tough to get through unscathed with a road game at Florida State in a few weeks, and with Wake Forest, at Louisville, and Boston College to face.

But if you can beat Clemson and Miami, you’re good enough to roll through everyone else.

Miami has proved its mental toughness in late thrillers against against Florida State and Georgia Tech, but on the down side, the team isn’t exactly roaring.

5-0 is 5-0, and the rest of the schedule isn’t all that bad. But just like Syracuse can show that it’s the real deal with a win, Miami can prove that it really is a big-time player in the College Football Playoff chase with a dominant performance.

One Reason Why Syracuse Will Win
Dungey has been fantastic.

He might be getting hit, but he’s still coming through and producing, generating several big plays against Clemson and bombing NC State and Pitt for 750 yards in the two games.

Miami’s secondary has only faced one team with a decent passing game – Toledo – and it gave up 344 yards and three scores. The only other team that could sort of throw – Florida State – did it with freshman James Blackman still trying to figure it all out.

Dungey has been terrific, partly due to a receiving corps that keeps on producing.

Steve Ishmael hit Clemson for a huge touchdown catch, making six grabs for 73 yards, and Ervin Phillips came up with a home run in his four-catch, 94-yard, one score day. The Orange receivers will pressure the Miami secondary with something it hasn’t dealt with all season long.

Look out! Here comes an avalanche of UM defenders to face no-huddle Syracuse (miamiherald.com; Degnan)

Get ready for an avalanche of University of Miami defensive backs and linemen descending on the Hard Rock Stadium turf at 3:30 p.m. Saturday against Syracuse – and that’s with already being at least five defensive backs down.

The eighth-ranked Hurricanes (5-0, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) will face what Miami defensive coordinator Manny Diaz calls “the fastest offense in the country.’’

The no-huddle, lightning-paced Syracuse Orange (4-3, 2-1) is led by quarterback wiz Eric Dungey, a junior who has 2,080 passing yards, 386 rushing yards and ranks fifth nationally in completions per game (26.8), sixth in points responsible for (122) and seventh in total offense (352.3).

Syracuse, which slayed defending national champion Clemson last week, has run at least 90 plays on offense in three of its seven games, and more than 80 in another two.

The most plays a UM defense has faced this season was Duke’s 88.

Does Diaz think his defense is close to simulating Syracuse’s speed on offense?

“Oh, no,’’ he said Wednesday. “We can’t. There’s no way. It’s similar to Georgia Tech a week ago. We don’t have the personnel to be able to do it. As a football team we’re still thin at wideout and corner and DB, so we always have a hard time really simulating during the course of the week the other team’s best players.

Syracuse-Miami matchup headlines ACC Week 8 (wtop.com; AP)

Things to watch in the Atlantic Coast Conference in Week 8:

GAME OF THE WEEK: Syracuse at Miami. The eighth-ranked Hurricanes (5-0, 3-0) are the only unbeaten team remaining in the conference, using a most unlikely late rally to beat Georgia Tech . There’s little chance they take Syracuse (4-3, 2-1) lightly after the Orange pulled the season’s biggest upset by knocking off then-No. 2 Clemson. Miami coach Mark Richt says he “would hope that we would be ready no matter what, but you can’t deny what happened.” Syracuse QB Eric Dungey, who ranks second in the ACC in total offense (352 ypg), figures to test a Miami defense that’s fourth in the league, allowing 4.85 yards per play.

BEST MATCHUP: Boston College rushing offense vs. Virginia defense. BC freshman A.J. Dillon burst onto the scene last week, rushing for 272 yards and four touchdowns in an upset at Louisville . The Cavaliers haven’t allowed more than 211 yards rushing in any game this season, and have held four of their six opponents to 168 yards rushing or fewer. Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall says his players “have to have a stomach for contact in this kind of game.”

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: The top-heavy Atlantic Division is showing significantly more depth than in years past. In the previous three seasons, Clemson, Florida State and Louisville combined to go 36-0 against the other four teams in the division — N.C. State, Wake Forest, Boston College and Syracuse. Not this year. N.C. State knocked off the Seminoles and Cardinals before BC beat Louisville and Syracuse stunned the Tigers last week.

LONG SHOT: History suggests Pittsburgh could at least keep things close at Duke. The Panthers — eight-point underdogs — have won three of the four meetings since they joined the ACC in 2013, finding ways to beat both good and poor Duke teams. Both teams are slumping, with Pitt (2-5, 0-3) losing four of five and the Blue Devils (4-3, 1-3) dropping three in a row since their 4-0 start.

Syracuse Football Needs Dino Babers More Than Babers Needs Syracuse (itlh.com; Weisleder)

Aside from incomprehensible individual efforts from Eric Dungey, his wide receivers, and Syracuse’ defense this past Friday, it doesn’t take a genius to know that Dino Babers guided SU to victory over Clemson.
The Syracuse football roster may be smaller and less developed than the majority of storied Division 1 programs, but Babers’ ability to instill heart and determination into each and every player is the reason why SU is capable of taking down any team in the country.

Cincinnati Bengals HC Marvin Lewis, as well as a handful of other NFL coaches, are on thin ice. Babers’ is far more qualified than most college coaches, and can very easily have a head coaching job at the highest level next year.

While John Wildhack, Syracuse’ athletic director, was skeptical about Babers after SU won just four games in 2016. Following Friday’s win, Syracuse has four wins, and Wildhack must be convinced that Babers can transform Syracuse into a football program that competes at the highest level week after week.

Babers has proved his worth with Eastern Illinois, Bowling Green, and now Syracuse. His leadership abilities are unteachable, and his ceiling for success is beyond most people’s imaginations.

Syracuse needs to act quickly and extend their head coach because Babers could be the face of their success for the next 25+ years.

Even their fans recognize how underpaid Babers is considering how quickly he has made this declining football team relevant again.

This past weekend, Syracuse football fans created an Orange t-shirt with “#PayDino” written in the middle, and are selling them on teespring.com.

#PayDino campaign is official! Support the cause and WE WANT BABERS! #CLEMvsCUSE#oitnf #Cuse #DomeDudes #PayDino

ACC Football: Week 8 games to watch (tarheelblog.com; Hood)

...
Syracuse (4-3, 2-1 ACC) @ Miami (5-0, 3-0 ACC)
Saturday, October 21st, 3:30 PM, ESPN

Somone here may have hinted that an upset was possible last week. Now, you can’t predict that a quarterback is going to get hurt, but Syracuse brought about the “Clemsoning” that everyone expected to happen at some point. But the win wasn’t a fluke, as Eric Dungey tossed for 278 yards against a stingy Clemson D, scoring 3 TD’s. The Orange felt like they had momentum building to this win, and they were able to take advantage of their shot on a Friday night to pull off perhaps the biggest upset of the year so far.

A bowl game is no longer out of the question for the Orange, and with the extra day off they’ll be looking to continue the momentum against the Hurricanes. To say their 5-0 record is tenuous is being kind. They’ve needed a final drive against both Florida State and Georgia Tech in order to pull out the win. You can’t keep living on the edge like that and expecting to win every time, and Syracuse is coming in full of confidence that they can take down anyone in their path.

The Hurricanes are going to look to stay healthy against the Orange and the Tar Heels next weekend with their eye on Virginia Tech on November 4th. Can the Orange pull off two stunners in a row?

Wanted North Country man arrested for driving 93 mph with 41 pounds of marijuana (PS; Maddox)

A man wanted by law enforcement in Northern New York was arrested yesterday after he was caught going 30 mph over the speed limit, troopers announced Wednesday.

He also had more than 40 pounds of marijuana stashed in a bag in his car, according to state police.
Justin D. Rourke, 37, of Hogansburg, Franklin County, was charged with second-degree criminal possession of marijuana, a felony.

Troopers pulled Rourke over along Interstate 81 in Pamelia after watching him fly by at 93 mph in a 65-mph zone, troopers said. They could smell marijuana from the inside of the vehicle while they were speaking with him, according to state police.

Rourke allowed them to search the car, where police soon found the source of the smell: a gym bag stuffed with 41 pounds of marijuana, troopers said. They also discovered there was an active warrant for Rourke's arrest out of Franklin County.

Rourke was arraigned in the Pamelia court and sent to Jefferson County jail on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond. He remained in jail Wednesday evening, according to VineLink records.

Fastest offense Miami has played thus far was Toledo..who ranks 16th with 79.4 plays per game.

Best quote on the NFL scouting article:

"He's had some negative yardage plays. He's started for two-and-a-half years. That is good. When he's done, he'll be a three-and-a-half year guy. A guy like Slayton can stay in (school), get bigger and stronger and be ready to go after your senior year."
