Welcome to National Boston Cream Pie Day!

National Boston Cream Pie Day is observed annually on October 23. Pie lovers move along. Cake lovers, pull up a chair. Let’s celebrate the cake with an identity crisis! Boston Cream Pie is a chocolate frosted, custard filled cake that is loved by millions.

In 1856, at Boston’s Parker House Hotel, Armenian-French chef M. Sanzian created this pudding and cake combination which comprises two layers of sponge cake filled with vanilla flavored custard or creme patisserie. The cake is then topped with a chocolate glaze, such as a ganache or sometimes powdered sugar and a cherry.

In 1996, Massachusetts declared the Boston Cream Pie as their official dessert.

Syracuse AD John Wildhack should lock up Dino Babers sooner than later (commentary) (PS; Bailey)

For the second time in as many years, Dino Babers has put the Syracuse football program in the national spotlight.

After upsetting 17th-ranked Virginia Tech last year, his Orange pulled off an all-time classic win in knocking off No. 2 Clemson last Friday. If not for an out-of-character, four-turnover day from SU's offense, it's possible an upset of No. 8 Miami would've followed.

While the product isn't quite complete yet -- Babers himself will tell you SU doesn't have the depth it needs yet, and the offensive line is only finally gelling 20 games into his tenure -- one thing is clear: he is the right man for this job.

And other schools will take notice.

Don't want to take my word for it? Here's always candid senior linebacker Zaire Franklin in his recent Player's Tribune article:

Honestly, when I first heard that the school had offered the job to Coach Babers, I wasn't sure what to think.

He had done well at Bowling Green, but I had no idea what that meant for our team. I had a lot of questions about whether he could get our guys to buy in. Was he a good fit at this program? Was he up for this job?

He answered all of those questions in about 10 seconds.

I'm serious, that first meeting he held with us, I knew pretty much immediately that this was the right coach. Coach Babers is one of those guys who has a certain aura about him -- almost an "it" factor, you know. You can't really describe it unless you're around it. When he walked into that room to meet with the players for the first time, you could sense every guy on our team was leaning forward to hear what he had to say. Without having to make a display of it, it was clear that he was someone in control.

UM scores late in another heart-thumper to preserve victory over Syracuse (miamiherald.com; Degnan)

Either the Miami Hurricanes get a collective adrenaline rush from heart-palpitating fourth quarters, or they just can’t help themselves.

Syracuse, which defeated defending national champion Clemson last week, would not quit Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium, scoring 16 points in the second half to come within one point and get Miami fans hyperventilating for the third week in a row.

But once again, No. 8 Miami wouldn’t quit either.

Quarterback Malik Rosier led UM on a game-saving drive late in the fourth quarter, and running back Travis Homer sealed a 27-19 victory on his 33-yard touchdown run with 2:48 left.

“Well, we found another way to make it really exciting,’’ UM coach Mark Richt said. “Part of the reason was Syracuse is a really good football team. You’ve seen what they can do.”

Rosier had a career-high 344 passing yards and two touchdowns to help carry UM, one of eight undefeated teams entering the weekend, to a 6-0 overall record and 4-0 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

“We, for some reason, can’t find a way to play really good on both sides at the same time – we kind of take turns,’’ Richt said. “It’d be nice to be more consistent. You become consistent offensively when you throw and catch like you should. You become consistent when you can convert third downs a little bit better than we have been. We just have not been very good at all.

Clinic Talk: Film Review of Syracuse at Miami (stateoftheu.com; Dottavio)

The Miami Hurricanes beat the Syracuse Orange 27-19 in another late game thriller. This wasn’t cause for comeback but the ‘Canes had to hold off Syracuse down to the last few minutes.

First, let’s address the clock management of Mark Richt on the final drive. Richt didn’t milk the clock on the Orange and thus, left Syracuse time to drive the field in what became a one possession game. But truthfully, Mark Richt did exactly what was needed to win the football game. He kept throwing, he ran the offense at the tempo Miami is most successful in to work down the field and score, and the Orange defense was gassed and Richt took advantage of it. Football is a real game with real scenarios- it’s not all Madden 5 minute quarters and 40 second play clocks where your team runs the same in the 4th quarter or the 2nd quarter. Richt has to play to his team’s strengths and analyze the situations.

Miami’s Snag Concept
The snag concept is one of my favorite concepts, especially when you run stalk/bubble as often as Miami does in their run pass option (RPO) game. The outside WR will run a slant that stops in space, while the inside WR will run a bubble (in some schemes) or an arrow (0 yard out route) in other schemes. For Miami it makes sense to run a stop/bubble.

To the bottom side the #3 threat has to run an outside hitch to drag the linebacker away from helping on the slant. The other two bottom receivers can run whatever as long as they don’t cross the field.

Malik Rosier will read off the flat defender. When the outside linebacker blitzes, he can identify that as who is over #2 (the slot receiver). If he plays the bubble, the slant will be open. The CB to that side has outside leverage so he can’t play a slant effectively because of positioning. If the defensive back over #2 plays the slant the bubble is open because of the depth of the cornerback over #1.

Despite loss to No. 8 Miami, Syracuse has teased us of what it could become (DO; Gutirrez)

Last year’s Syracuse team would have been knocked out of contention Saturday, considering SU had four first-half turnovers on the road against a top-10 team. But this year’s team is different because the Orange is no longer solely reliant on its offense. A near-upset at No. 8 Miami this weekend proved the win against Clemson last week was no fluke.

With one of the toughest schedules in the country, the Orange has yet to lose by more than nine points this season. In 2016, Syracuse fell by at least 15 points in each of its eight losses. That, more than anything, provides reason to believe Syracuse (4-4, 2-2 Atlantic Coast) can become bowl eligible for the first time in four years.

Here we are, Syracuse owning a 4-4 record with four games remaining, exactly like last year. It’s been a season full of the unexpected: an emotional defeat to Middle Tennessee State and former head coach Scott Shafer in Week 2, a series of injuries to the defense, competitive losses on the road at now-No. 24 LSU and now-No. 16 North Carolina State and a massive upset over the defending national champion followed by a near-shocker at No. 8 Miami.

This all shows Syracuse is better equipped to handle any challenges it faces, even if the team isn’t playing to its full potential.

Football fashion: Syracuse reminds us that 'Winter is coming' (espn; Willis)

Is Jon Snow the prince who was promised?

It's the question puzzling "Game of Thrones" fans as they wait for the next book in George R. R. Martin's series and the eighth and final season of the TV show.

One of those fans surely concerned over the fate of Westeros is Syracuse coach Dino Babers.

He's an avid fan, as are some of the Orange players, according to Austin Beehner, Syracuse's director of football video.

With that, Syracuse took icy whites (or icy white walkers) to a new level, going with the "Winter is coming" uniforms. Beehner also produced the reveal video.

Syracuse middle linebacker Zaire Franklin, another GoT fan, did the modeling and voiceover.

The Orange will wear the all-white combo when they travel south down the King's Road to face No. 8 Miami (3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN and ESPN App).

But just a warning, as the Starks, and surely Babers know, things don't always go well when Northerners head south.

After another thriller, No. 8 Miami seeks consistency with big games looming (sun-sentnel.com; Chirinos)

There were promising drives that ended with field goals, not touchdowns. Missed tackles. Dropped passes. And chance after chance for the eighth-ranked Hurricanes to give themselves breathing room against a Syracuse team looking to knock off its second top-10 opponent in as many weeks.

Instead, for the third cnsecutive week, the Hurricanes found themselves playing in a nail-biter, a late 33-yard touchdown run from Travis Homer with 2:48 left and one last defensive stand finally securing Miami’s 27-19 win over the Orange on Saturday afternoon at Hard Rock Stadium.

And while there was celebrating after the wins against Florida State and Georgia Tech, after this one, there was more relief than anything else.

Why? Because the Hurricanes understand they can’t afford to play as inconsistently as they did against Syracuse if they want to continue to control their own fate in the race for the Coastal Division crown and continue extending the nation’s second-longest win streak which now stands at 11 games.

“We, for some reason, can’t find a way to play really good on both sides at the same time — we kind of take turns. It’d be nice to be more consistent. You become consistent offensively when you throw and catch like you should. You become consistent when you can convert third downs a little bit better than we have been,” Hurricanes coach Mark Richt said. “We just have not been very good at all. We’ve just got to continue to work.”

NY State warns ticks can stay active in fall amid concerns of deadly Powassan virus (PS; AP)

New York health officials are warning state residents that disease-carrying ticks might still be active this fall.

Ticks can remain active until temperatures drop below about 40 degrees. So officials say it's important to take precautions and perform tick checks after being outdoors even as the weather cools down.

Lyme disease-causing bacteria are spread by blacklegged ticks, which are common around the state.

More recently, the state has confirmed several cases of Powassan virus, a tick-borne illness. There has been one confirmed case in Dutchess County and three cases in Saratoga County.

A 74-year-old man died this year in Saratoga County after contracting Powassan virus.

If we lose this game, this will hurt worst than MTSU. There's no reason we shouldn't beat the Noles.

I wouldn't go that far.

They may not be real good right now but they have talent and they'll be playing at home.

I wouldn't go that far.

They may not be real good right now but they have talent and they'll be playing at home.

But, if there's a year we should beat them, it's this. And they're a much bigger program than MTSU and would be seen as another major step forward. I want this one bad.
