Welcome to Computer Security Day!
Computer Security Day began in 1988, around the time that computers were becoming commonplace, even if they were yet to become ubiquitous in homes. The 1980s saw not only increased usage of computers, especially in business and government, and the internet was in its early stages. While hacking and viruses have virtually been around since the early days of modern computing, evolving and increasingly sophisticated technologies began to see more applications, and therefore more security risks due to the simple fact that more data was at risk as computers found their way into banks, government offices, and businesses. More important data stored on computers and servers meant more valuable information for hackers, and this meant higher profile cases of security breaches. As such, online security became an important concern by the end of the decade, and so Computer Security Day was created to raise awareness about computer security.

SU Offers Two 2020 Playmakers from Florida – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)
We’ve almost hit that time of year when northerners pack their bags for Florida to avoid the snow. The SU Football coaches didn’t exactly make the postseason trip to the sunshine state, but they at least made a phone call to extend offers to a couple of 2020 playmakers.
Jaylan Knighton
It’s safe to say that a guy like Knighton would help solve SU’s problems at running back. He’s only a sophomore (Class of 2020), so the Orange would have to wait a while. Knighton ran for over 1,000 yards this season at Deerfield Beach (FL). It’s been quite the month for the tailback, who’s picked up offers from Alabama and Louisville. Knighton also has offers from Auburn and Miami, among others. Syracuse becomes the ninth team on his list.

Clemson will be down two defenders Saturday against Miami (thestate.com; Connolly)
Clemson will be without a pair of defenders for Saturday night’s ACC championship game against Miami.
Tigers coach Dabo Swinney told reporters Wednesday night that starting Mike linebacker Tre Lamar and cornerback Mark Fields will not play against the Hurricanes.
Lamar started eight of Clemson’s first 10 games before suffering a stinger against Florida State. He missed games against in-state opponents The Citadel and South Carolina and was hoping to get back this weekend but will be unable to.
“I don’t think Tre’s going to quite be ready, but he does look a lot better. He feels better,” Swinney said. “He’s made a lot of progress. He’s pretty much got all his range of motion back. He’s really just working on the strength now, just kind of strengthening back up.”

ACC Blog (espn; Adelson, Hale)
No. 1 Clemson and No. 7 Miami will square off in the ACC championship game Saturday with a College Football Playoff spot on the line. It seems hard to believe that just two years ago, Clemson beat Miami 58-0. But that loss was the catalyst to get Mark Richt into the fold as Miami head coach, and he has led the Hurricanes to their first ACC title-game appearance. Meanwhile, this is old hat for Clemson: The Tigers are making their third straight appearance.
Here's a guide to everything you need to know about the ACC championship game (8 p.m. ET, ABC).
Star player
Clemson: From Deon Cain and Travis Etienne on offense to a defensive line chock full of future NFL first-rounders, Clemson is certainly not without elite talent. But stars? That's sort of the beauty of this team. It's not a group that lives or dies by one big star. In the post-Deshaun Watsonera, Clemson has found all sorts of ways to win and, depending on the week, has relied on a different hero nearly every time out.

Here's why only 200 Clemson students got tickets to the ACC football championship (independentmail.com; Silvarole)
More than 4,000 Clemson University students — 4,860, to be exact — requested tickets through the university for a seat at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Game Saturday.
Only 200 of those students actually got tickets to the game between the Tigers and the Miami Hurricanes.
Clemson and Miami were each allotted 5,500 tickets to sell or give away for Saturday's championship game, said Amy Yakola, executive associate commissioner and chief of external affairs for the ACC. The 5,500 allotment has been in place for the past few years, and schools are permitted to divvy up those tickets however they'd like, she said.
Clemson opted to sell 200 of those tickets for $65 apiece to students, though the university attempted to request more from the ACC, said Joe Galbraith, assistant athletics director at Clemson.
The university also gave 500 tickets to the Tiger Band, 1,300 to "accommodate player guests and staff tickets," and 3,500 to IPTAY donors and season ticket holders at prices that ranged from $128-214, Galbraith said.

The latest College Football Playoff rankings bring bad news for Louisville (courier-journal.com; Lourim)
The Louisville football team has not been ranked in any of the College Football Playoff rankings this season, even after winning three straight games to close the regular season.
This past week, results from elsewhere in the country hurt the Cardinals.
The ACC first sends teams to the top six bowl games, named the New Year’s Six and including the College Football Playoff. Those teams will be Clemson and Miami this year.
Then, the conference sends teams to each of the bowls with ACC tie-ins. In years when Notre Dame is bowl-eligible and not in one of the New Year’s Six games, the Fighting Irish take up one of the ACC’s slots, bumping every other team from the conference down one notch.

Throwback Thursday: North Syracuse native saves Boston journalist's life in fire (PS; Croyle)
The Cocoanut Grove fire in Boston on Nov. 28, 1942 was one of the deadliest fires in American history.
It killed 492 people, injured hundreds more and briefly knocked World War II off the front pages of the country's newspapers.
It would lead to a reform of safety standards and fire codes across the nation.
A native of North Syracuse was at the fire and his story, and the story of one of the men he saved, makes for a great coincidences and proves why history is so interesting.
Howard Sotherden was born in North Syracuse and delivered copies of the Syracuse Herald as a boy.
