Welcome to Opposite Day!

Ever wanted to be a rebel? Now is your chance. Don’t celebrate Opposite Day on January 25 by doing everything the wrong way.

While it is unclear who created this Opposite Day and for what purposes, rumor has it that the unofficial holiday comes from a playground game, where children trick each other by asking silly questions and then reversing the answers.

The holiday is also sometimes called National Opposite Day in the United States.

SU Football Slate Fields Several Tough Contests - Syracuse New Times (syracusenewtimes.com; Michael)

Looking for its first bowl appearance under third-year coach Dino Babers, the Syracuse University football team will face a difficult schedule but one that appears a little less daunting than last season.

In finishing 4-8 for the second consecutive year under Babers, the 2017 Orange faced 10 teams that had gone to a bowl game the previous season. This year, seven teams on SU’s schedule played in a bowl game after the 2017 season.

This year’s schedule includes six home games, including a Friday-night matchup with Louisville that will be televised nationally by one of the ESPN networks, and a non-conference game against Notre Dame Nov. 17 at Yankee Stadium. Season tickets starting at $125 are on sale now through cuse.com/tickets, (888) DOME-TIX or at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B) during regular business hours.

Fans Come Out For Orange Women’s Hoops

The Syracuse University women’s basketball team didn’t set an attendance record Jan. 21, but the Orange did improve to 10-0 at the Carrier Dome with a 70-52 romp over Atlantic Coast Conference rival Pittsburgh.

SU was pushing to break its home single-game attendance record of 11,021 set when Notre Dame visited the Dome last year. The Orange didn’t get close to the record Jan. 21 but did set a season-high with 8,126 fans.

Clemson's tough stretch, NC State's home cooking highlight ACC's 2018 slate (espn; Hale)

We're still more than seven months away from games being played, but at least we now have the official ACC football schedule for 2018 to dissect between now and then. The schedule, which was released Wednesday, doesn't exactly offer many surprises. We knew the matchups already, just not the dates. But now that there's a complete picture of the 2018 competition around the league, there are some intriguing takeaways.

1. ACC vs. SEC rivalries get started early

Louisville vs. Alabama and Miami vs. LSU highlight Week 1, while Clemson vs. Texas A&M is the marquee matchup of Week 2. Last year, the ACC played four games against the SEC in Weeks 1 and 2 ... and it didn't go well. Clemson's win over Auburn was the lone highlight for the league. NC State and Georgia Tech both coughed up winnable games, and Florida State was manhandled by the Crimson Tide. Will it be any better in 2018? For the non-SEC fans out there, let's hope so. The long offseason of SEC mania will already be taxing enough.

2. No short weeks for FSU, Clemson

Florida State went to Boston College on a Friday last season and was walloped. Clemson went to Syracuse on a Friday and endured one of the year's most stunning upsets. This season? Neither team has to play a non-Saturday affair (aside from FSU's Monday night opener), which is more in line with how the SEC schedules for its powers. Georgia Tech, on the other hand? Not so lucky.

Utica Comets approaching AHL history at the turnstiles (PS; Kramer)

The Utica Comets' rabid fandom is close to re-writing the AHL record books.

Utica will become the second AHL franchise in history to reach 100 consecutive regular season sellouts with a full capacity crowd tonight at the Adirondack Bank Center at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

In addition, the Comets will further their streak of sellout games with a current run of 115 (including playoffs).

The Comets are chasing the AHL record for consecutive regular season home sellouts which is held by the St. John's IceCaps with 120 games, spanning October 10, 2011 to October 26, 2014.

The current streak spans the past three seasons.

In the 2017 offseason, a 26,000-square foot addition to the Adirondack Bank Center increased the seating capacity to 3,917. In 2014, renovations were made to include a premium bar with a seating area and suite called the Zetlin's Lounge. This boosted capacity from 3,815 to 3,860.
