In the United States, National Croissant Day is observed each year on January 30th. Croissants are a buttery, crescent-shaped rolls that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
The key to a perfect croissant is laminating the dough. Laminating the dough is a process by which butter is folded into the mixture creating multiple thin layers of butter and dough. The result is a mouth-watering flaky crust and airy body.
Legend surrounds this pastry, as is often the case with a popular, worldly treat. What is known, is that crescent-shaped breads have been found around the world for ages. One of these was the Kipferl which originated in Austria as far back as the 13th century. This nonlaminated bread is more like a roll.
Credit for the croissant we know today is given to an Austrian military officer, August Zang. In 1939 he opened a Viennese bakery in Paris introducing France to Viennese baking techniques.

Syracuse football recruiting: Class of 2018 3-star running back Jarveon Howard reportedly commits to SU (DO; McCleary)
Three-star running back Jarveon Howard announced his commitment to Syracuse on an official visit last weekend. Syracuse.com first reported the commitment.
Howard is the 22nd commitment in Syracuse’s 2018 class and the fourth running back added during the recruiting cycle. According to the report, Howard called Syracuse a “home away from home” and plans to sign next Wednesday on National Signing Day.

A native of Missouri, Howard is the 50th-ranked running back in the 2018 class and the 13th best player in his state, per 247sports.com. As a senior at East Marion (Missouri) High School, Howard accumulated 1,508 yards on the ground on just 118 carries, good for a 12.8 yard per carry average. His 21 touchdowns led his team.

Syracuse Is Next-to-Last In This Key Sports Category (lite987.com; Coombs)
The picture above shows empty seats. It's a growing problem at the Carrier Dome, where the Syracuse Orange play home football games. Attendance has been lackluster in recent years, and the team's record the last four seasons is a dismal 15-33.
Fewer and fewer people are making the trip to the Carrier Dome, once a prime destination for football fans from all points of the compass, including the Mohawk Valley and Central New York, Rochester and parts of Western New York, and the Southern Tier.
According to the folks at WalletHub, Syracuse is the next-to-worst football city in the U.S. The study took into account attendance, on-field results, ticket prices, parking and stadium accessibility, fan engagement, and other factors.

Syracuse native, champion Ironman triathlete hit by car, suffers devastating injuries (PS; O'Toole)
A world class Ironman competitor who grew up in Syracuse's Strathmore neighborhood was badly injured last week when a car hit her bicycle head-on in Honolulu, her parents said.
Lectie Altman, 33, a 2002 Nottingham High School graduate, was thrown about 40 feet from her bike on Tantalus Drive, a hilly road with curves many cyclists train on, after the 20-year-old driver struck her Thursday, according to an Associated Press article. She was riding with a group of cyclists when the crash happened.
Witnesses told the AP they "heard revving engines and screeching tires before a car went off the road on one side, came across the other lane of traffic out of control and hit Altman head on."
Honolulu police arrested a man they say was "drifting" and racing another vehicle in his Nissan on Tantalus Drive when he lost control, crossed onto the opposite side of the road and struck Altman.
The Nissan driver was arrested on suspicion of first-degree negligent injury, the Star Adviserreported. Police told the newspaper this weekend they were still trying to find the other driver.
Altman, who was training for a triathlon in Germany, was wearing a helmet and never lost consciousness in the crash. But her injuries were serious. She suffered many broken bones, including to one arm; her other thumb, wrist and hand; both legs; and hip, said her parents, Nona and Jack Altman, of Syracuse.
