Welcome to National Bagel Day!

National Bagel Day is devoted to bagels, and bakeries and stores often offer discounted or free bagels on the day. It is unknown exactly how bagels got their start. One story says they were invented in Krakow, Poland, where they appeared in the city's community regulations in 1610. This account says they were given as gifts to women in childbirth. Another story says a Viennese baker created bagels to commemorate the victory of Polish King Jan III Sobieski over the Turks in 1683. This account says the bread was formed into the shape of a "buegel"—or stirrup—because the liberated Austrians had clung to the king's stirrups as he had ridden past.

Bagels became a part of the Polish diet, and then part of the Slavic diet in general. By the mid-nineteenth century, they could be found in London, and they were first mentioned in English print, in 1892, as "beuglich." They likely found their way to the United States via Jewish immigrants from Poland, and were eaten by them especially during Sunday breakfasts. They were first mentioned in American print as "bagels" in 1916. The production and sale of bagels became significant in New York City.

Ratcliffe: Virginia football program building a Polynesian pipeline under Mendenhall (godanriver.com; Ratcliffe)

For decades, college football’s Polynesian Pipeline existed between Hawaii, the Samoan Islands and BYU.

Now, Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall and Polynesian heritage members of his staff are extending that pipeline 2,000 miles eastward. Not purposely, mind you, but by bonds that go back to their era in Provo.

Two of UVa’s latest additions to its 22-man recruiting class are Hawaiians: defensive lineman Aaron Faumui of Kapolei, and offensive lineman Micah Mariteragi of Hauula. Both are ranked among the state’s top 10 prospects, as is previous signee Samson Reed, a defensive lineman from Laie.
It’s a connection that Mendenhall and three of his Polynesian assistant coaches assumed was over when they left BYU two years ago and headed east to Virginia. That hasn’t been the case, which can be a good thing for the rebuilding Cavaliers program

Leadership Symposium Kicks Off 2018 ACC Academic Consortium Events (theacc.com)

Students from all 15 Atlantic Coast Conference universities and their leadership advisors will gather to discuss courageous leadership in contentious times February 9-11 at Duke University. The ACC Leadership Symposium is the first of four events sponsored by the ACC Academic Consortium (ACCAC) this spring. The ACCAC leverages the athletic associations and identities among the 15 ACC institutions in order to enrich the educational missions of member institutions.

“Being a leader is a lifelong responsibility of students fortunate enough to attend an ACC university,” said Dave Brown, coordinator of the ACC Academic Consortium and provost emeritus of Wake Forest University. “This weekend of leadership education and practice is about framing goals, building networks, coaching colleagues, practicing advocacy, establishing priorities and swapping best practices. By joining the resources of many universities, the experience is beyond what any one university can provide.”

Pastabilities turns 35: How fresh pasta at lunch launched iconic Syracuse restaurant (PS; Weaver)

Before the spicy hot tomato oil, before the stretch bread or the duck bacon pizza, Pastabilities served simple, cafeteria-style lunches.

It was the early 1980s, and Karyn Korteling and Patrick Heagerty had a basic idea for a restaurant: A small menu with Italian comforts like meatballs or alfredo atop house-made pasta. Diners would pick up the food in a line. They would practically serve themselves.

"We thought it would be a good concept for Syracuse," Korteling said, 35 years later in her Syracuse office, which overlooks the full-service restaurant Pastabilities has become.

The couple opened Pastabilities on Dec. 22, 1982, along with Patrick's siblings, Michael and Eileen. Today, the restaurant still serves a cafeteria-style lunch, six days a week. It's become the oldest continuously run restaurant in downtown Syracuse.
