NIL target donors

Glad to see so many alumni being very successful. Not sure in light of the recent events I would even want my name out there. Franky, I love the sports programs. How many of the people on the list are willing to fork over seven figures to teenagers when they can put the same money into an academic program if they are inclined to donate. I am willing to bet most of the people on the list would rather give to academics than to sports. I remember Mr. Lender and his wife gave a very generous, five million dollar, donation to SU for social justice causes a few years ago. Probably a better use of funds that a couple of power forwards and a point guard who could leave in a year or two anyway.
There are many donors at SU and other schools who give exclusively to academics. There are many, often former athletes, who give exclusively to athletics. The same applies to folks who went to other schools but still bleed Orange as it pertains to sports. They fork over their hard-earned $$$ to SU athletics but naturally not academics. Then you have the Phil Knights who give heavily to athletics but also have given billions of dollars...that's "billions" with a "B", kiddies,... to academics. Those guys are a dream alum but few schools are as lucky as Oregon (and also in this case Stanford) in that regard.

I think you have nailed the part about funding players who could leave in a year or two. Guys who pay nothing to go to SU and at the same time are getting paid several hundred thousand dollars to play a game that kids play for free. Guys who will never get an SU degree.

Contrast that with kids who are getting academic scholies if they are lucky, and doing the rest with student loans or Mom and Dad's $$$. Many of those same kids will make positive changes in the world with their SU diploma.

I donate to both the academic side and the athletic side, although it may surprise you that I have not donated billions. Shocking, I know. That said, as much as I love SU sports, the bulk of my annual donations go to my old academic department. I may have Ernie's autograph on my desk, but the SU education I received laid the groundwork for a very successful career and thus a comfortable life for me and my family. You can say the same about my wife’s SU graduate degree. I think that most of the alums who donate to SU look at it the same way.

You basically need to find 20 people to donate 20 million and that would get you thru the next 10+ years give or take living off the interest.

Pretty good chance the system looks different in the next years anyway

Target large businesses more aggressively. 50k and 100k add up. Cant donations be writeoffs?

NIL is advertising, not a "donation".

Not even going to get into the scam that is charity tax writeoffs.

Aren’t you donating to a fund? Or can’t you? I’m sure there’s ways around it.

A friend was at an event last night where a kid was collecting toys with a local business. Taylor and Bell showed up with toys and hung out. Not sure if it was NIL or not but my buddy said they were very cool and represented the University well. Don't think it was NIL because its a small, grass roots thing. Nice to add a human touch to these $ discussions because the latter is never going to be a conversation that ends well for SU academically or athletically.

It was not NIL

And Bell and Taylor used their own $$$$ to buy.

Very very very classy move

Athletes Who Care legitimately seems like a charity, I didn't even realize they did NIL. Orange United is not a charity.
Most nil are not charities.

However if you’re a local business and dedicate your 100k to a sponsorship of a local university player - aka a marketing deal - that is most likely a deductible business expense. It’s a cost of doing business. Most NIL deals are done for some kind of marketing benefit so it can be done as a cost. Not all obviously. Small things like Orange United are just giving money away and that’s why they’re not as successful.

Revenue sharing will be different and basically a shell game for schools which is their preference. You can donate to the general athletic fund as a deductible donation and then school pays players via a different area. It makes it easier for schools to get 50k-100k checks which usually people care about the donations for. Someone doing a NIl directly or through collective usually has a business to route it for.

I’ve always said it. These kids are way way way ahead of me in terms of maturity when I was in college.

I have 1 rule for myself about posting on here: I will never negatively post about a player. They are college kids trying their best at the thing they care about the most. On top of all the other responsibility that comes with being in college, they still find time and resources to give back to the community.

Took me really meeting and talking to some of these football players to really realize that in the grand scheme of things, these athletes are really still kids at heart

I still think they need to come up with more NIL deals with businesses in the community. Wegmans, Aspen Dental, Tullys. All these places should have NIL deals with us

This is what I was saying. It’s surprising they don’t have more and larger business deals (at least that we know of). Makes me think SU isnt putting in the work to secure them. Do any of the big auto groups have sponsors, Fucillo, Burdick, ?

I know they're trying though i'm not sure how good they are at the effort. I also heard the Learfield partnership didn't help in terms of certain aspects of marketing deals, but agree, they should be able to do more.

I know. That is what I was saying.

And I believe tax exempt status for universities should (and will) be scrutinized once they start paying players. It will get messy quickly.
