Welcome to Levi Strauss Day!

Levi Strauss was a German-American businessman born in Bavaria on February 26th, 1829, who came to the United States with his family the mid-1800s when he was 18 years old. Strauss began as a dry goods wholesaler in San Francisco, California, where he sold various items such as clothing, bedding, bags and handkerchiefs to settlers, many of whom had arrived in California to take part in the gold rush. Needless to say, the hard physical labor required of the miners of the day and those building new railroads made it difficult for them to find clothing that would last for more than a few months without falling apart at the seams.

One day in 1870, one of Strauss’ clients, a tailor named Jacob W. Davis was approached by a woman who needed a pair of exceptionally strong working pants for her husband, a woodcutter. Her request prompted Davis to make a pair of pants from the denim he’d bought at Strauss’ shop that he then strengthened with copper rivets to reinforce the stitching. Word of the new article of clothing and its endurance spread fast, and soon Davis was not able to keep up with the demand for his invention, nor did he have the resources to open a larger tailor shop or obtain a patent. Falling further and further behind and afraid someone else would steal his idea, Davis decided to ask for Strauss’ financial backing in the filing of a patent application. Strauss agreed, the patent was issued, the two men became business partners, and Levi Strauss & Co was born.

Fuente 0-1 vs Babers

Sunday links: Athlon ranks Fuente, Buzz as ACC's second best coaching tandem (roanoke.com; Bitter)

Which ACC school has the best combined football and basketball coaches? Duke, says Athlon, but Virginia Tech isn't far behind.

The sports magazine ranked the ACC's football and basketball coachesas a combination and put Justin Fuente and Buzz Williams second behind Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and David Cutcliffe.

That's a two-spot improvement for the Hokies duo from last year's rankings, which had Fuente and Williams behind the Duke pair once again but also Louisville's Bobby Petrino and Rick Pitino (Pitino has since been fired) and North Carolina's Roy Williams and Larry Fedora(Williams held up his end of the bargain with a national championship, but the shine came off Fedora's tenure last fall).

Here's the full ranking:

  • 1. Duke: Krzyzewski and Cutclife
  • 2. Virginia Tech: Fuente and Williams
  • 3. Clemson: Dabo Swinney and Brad Brownell
  • 4. North Carolina: Williams and Fedora
  • 5. Miami: Mark Richt and Jim Larranaga
  • 6. Florida State: Willie Taggart and Leonard Hamilton
  • 7. Syracuse: Dino Babers and Jim Boeheim
  • 8. Virginia: Bronco Mendenhall and Tony Bennett
  • 9. Louisville: Petrino and David Padgett
  • 10. Wake Forest: Dave Clawson and Danny Manning
  • 11. Georgia Tech: Paul Johnson and Josh Pastner
  • 12. N.C. State: Dave Doeren and Kevin Keatts
  • 13. Boston College: Steve Addazio and Jim Christian
  • 14. Pittsburgh: Pat Narduzzi and Kevin Stallings

ACC Football Rx: Future Neutral Site Games as of 2/22/18 (accfootballrx.com; Hokie Mark)

I started with the 2018-2024 Neutral Site games as reported by FBSchedules [LINK].

First, I removed the annual games like Army/Navy, Florida/Georgia and Oklahoma/Texas. Those games are played at a neutral site every year and have been that way since long before the current trend.

Then, I highlighted games involving ACC teams in light blue; games not involving an ACC team but featuring an SEC team are highlighted in pink, while those with neither ACC nor SEC but with a B1G team are in dark blue.

Finally, I highlighted cities which are either in the ACC "footprint" or in areas where the ACC is reasonably expected to recruit players.

This is what I ended up with:

2018
Alabama vs. Louisville Sept. 1, 2018 Orlando, FL
Auburn vs. Washington Sept. 1, 2018 Atlanta, GA
Colorado vs. Colorado State Sept. 1, 2018 Denver, CO
Maryland vs. Texas Sept. 1, 2018 Landover, MD
Ole Miss vs. Texas Tech Sept. 1, 2018 Houston, TX
Tennessee vs. West Virginia Sept. 1, 2018 Charlotte, NC
LSU vs. Miami Sept. 2, 2018 Arlington, TX
Cincinnati vs. Miami (OH) Sept. 8, 2018 Cincinnati, OH
Ohio State vs. TCU Sept. 15, 2018 Arlington, TX
USF vs. Illinois Sept. 15, 2018 Chicago, IL
Arkansas vs. Texas A&M Sept. 29, 2018 Arlington, TX
Navy vs. Notre Dame Oct. 27, 2018 San Diego, CA
Notre Dame vs. Syracuse Nov. 17, 2018 Bronx, NY

The 10 Most-Hated College Football Programs In 2018 (thespun.com; Holleran)

You know what college football fans love to do more than root for their own team? Hate on another college football team.

Ohio State fans probably enjoy seeing Michigan fail more than they enjoy watching the Buckeyes succeed. The same can be said about a bunch of other rivalries across the country.

What college football teams are the most-universally hated, though? Here’s our crack at that list in 2018…

Green beer is here, Irish season begins (photos) (PS; Greenlar)

Syracuse:

It's official, Irish season has begun. Today marked the 55th Annual Coleman's Green Beer Delivery Day. Hundreds celebrated on Tipperary Hill as the parade started at the green-on-top traffic light at Tipp Hill Memorial Park and moved down Tompkins Street. Irish step dancers and bagpipers were the highlights of the parade, topped off with the traditional truck delivery of the famous green beer.

Mayor Ben Walsh was honored as this year's Green Beer Grand Marshal. Special guests this year were Blaithin Loughran as Miss Green Beer and Dan LaDuke as the Green Beer Pint.
