Welcome to Panda Day!

Pandas are big fluffy balls of fan wearing a tuxedo! Everyone knows what a panda looks like, and no one hates them. (You, in the back, the panda hater, you’re invited to leave planet Earth at any time) These cuddly little tumblers are especially known for their prodigious appetites that give them the ability to consume massive amounts of bamboo. Panda Day is dedicated to spreading awareness about this majestic teddy-bears of nature, spreading the word that deforestation is leading to the destruction of their habitats, and has placed them on the endangered animal list.

Chris Gedney remembered as selfless football great who turned setbacks into comebacks (PS; Mink)

Chris Gedney was memorialized Thursday here at Most Holy Rosary Church by friends and family as a consummate father and inspiration to a community who raised him and cheered him on as an All-American and NFL tight end.

He had been gifted with athletic prowess, but his fierce love for family, compassion for others and self-deprecation for all his achievements gave him an authenticity and, somehow, made him even more beloved.

The Strathmore-neighborhood church was packed with family members and friends of the Liverpool High School graduate who died March 9 at the age of 47. Filling the pews were former Syracuse football teammates and players and former co-workers of his at the university, including athletic director John Wildhack, Don McPherson, Dave Rebar, Blake Bednarz, Dan Conley, Dwayne Joseph, Kirby Dar Dar, Art Jones and Matt Park, Gedney's radio partner for the past decade.

Syracuse football: Chris Gedney's son shares lessons his father taught him (video) (PS; Bailey)

The first speaker at Chris Gedney's funeral paused to gather himself between each sentence.

The second, his wife, Seely Anderson-Gedney, talked quickly as she held back tears.

The third, Chase Gedney, spoke calmly. At 19 years old, the second of four siblings showed poise in reading a prepared speech about the lessons he learned from his father, who died unexpectedly at 47 years old last week.

"There are many lessons my father taught me about life," Chase Gedney said in his opening. "This is the one that stuck with me the most."

Mikhail Marinovich Handlebar Mustache | Video (sportsgrid.com; Davis; Throwback Friday)

If you didn’t hear, Stanford quarterback/NFL savior-to-be Andrew Luck shaved his beard. It was a much-hyped beard, but it’s probably just as well Luck got rid of it when he did – he’d have some serious competition for most buzzworthy college football facial hair. That facial hair belongs to Syracuse defensive end Mikhail Marinovich. Yes, Mikhail is related to the infamous college football father-son duo of Marv and Todd Marinovich (Marv’s son, Todd’s half-brother). And yes, the publicity for his face-growth is deserved.

Mikhail, you say, is growing a mustache, which would already be relatively rare for someone his age (except for hipster set, we guess). But this is not just any mustache – this is a genuine handlebar mustache. This thing would make Rollie Fingers proud. He could make life a living hell for Dudley Do-Right (or perhaps emulate someone even more villainous). Here’s a good look at just what kind of creation Mikhail’s face has cultivated, from Big East media day, via Syracuse.com:

ACC Football Rx: 2017 Big XII Revenue (accfootballrx.com; Hokie Mark)

The Big XII announced their 2017 revenue and the numbers were very good, but... these guys just don't seem to be able to tell the truth when it comes to financial reports!

From USA Today: Big XII Revenue for 2017 up more than 18%
The Big XII conference reported nearly $371 million in revenue for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2017 — an increase of $57 million, or more than 18% compared to the previous year... per-school payouts roughly $34.3M for all except Baylor, whose share is being 25% withheldThat's the part that's supposed to get your attention, but as they say, "the Devil is in the details"...
The Big 12’s television revenue rose by more than $41 million in fiscal 2017 to $197 million. Conference spokesman Bob Burda said the increase was scheduled under the conference’s TV contracts, and that future increases will vary by year.In other words, don't expect that TV revenue to increase that much again next year. Apparently the Big XII contract doesn't ramp up in a linear fashion the way many others do.
In addition, for the second consecutive year, Burda said, the conference made a supplemental revenue distribution from its accumulated operating reserves to the schools. That totaled $10 million in fiscal 2017 after totaling $19.1 million in 2016, Burda said. This resulted in the conference showing an annual operating deficit for each year.So part of that "revenue" isn't revenue at all in the normal sense - it's essentially money taken out of the conference savings account! So credit them for having a savings account (so does the ACC), but shame on them for calling this money "revenue".

Another question: how much of that bump is attributable to return of the conference title game?NewsOK estimates "nearly $30 million" from "broadcast money and ticket sales." [LINK]. So while the Big XII will get that money every year, you wouldn't expect that component to increase from year to year. It isn't open-ended like, say, a conference network.
