Doc Alexander - Wikipedia (wikipedia.org)

Throwback Wednesday

Joseph A. "Doc" Alexander (April 1, 1897 – September 12, 1975) was an American football player, who played center, tackle, guard, and end, and coach in the National Football League.[1]

Alexander was born in Silver Creek, New York, the son of Russian immigrants, and was Jewish.[1][2] He attended Syracuse University, and played for the school football team -- twice being named All American at guard -- as he attained a medical degree.[3][4][2] He was inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954, and also into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.[2]

Alexander played for the Syracuse Pros (1921), and played professionally in the National Football League (NFL) for the Rochester Jeffersons (1921–24) and the New York Giants (1925–27).[3] He was a two-time First Team All-Pro, in both 1921 and 1922.[3] In 1925 he was the Head Coach of the Jeffersons, and in 1926 he was the Head Coach of the Giants.[5]

Wake Forest Football: Can Kendall Hinton adequately replace John Wolford? (saturdayblitz.com; Miller)

Few expect Wake Forest football to match their eight win season from 2017. Can Kendall Hinton lead them back to contender status in the ACC in 2018?
Wake Forest football is without a doubt one of the most underrated programs in the ACC in the past two years. They’ve emerged as a tough out in the ACC after being one of the teams commonly found at the bottom of the conference standings in the previous five years.

The Demon Deacons finished up with an eight win campaign in 2017, as one of the best results in recent memory for the program. That was largely thanks to the efforts of senior quarterback John Wolford who posted a magnificient stat line in his final year in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Wolford tossed 29 touchdowns to only six interceptions, and fell just short of racking up 3,200 passing yards. He also added 10 more touchdowns on the ground. Any quarterback that totals 39 touchdowns with only six picks deserves a ton of respect for their performance.

However, now with Wolford gone, Wake Forest needs to find the next man up. That responsibility is likely to fall to rising senior Kendall Hinton. In limited action last season, Hinton tossed four touchdowns and ran for another. All that while Hinton did not have a single interception.

PressRoom Pub offers huge burgers, video games and NY beers in downtown Syracuse (PS; Weaver)

The PressRoom Pub has opened, and as promised, the 9-ounce burgers are on the menu and the gigantic televisions are on the walls.

There's also a 21-foot-long shuffle board, a basketball game. And a Galaxy/Ms. Pac-Man video game.

The restaurant and bar on the northern edge of downtown is in the renovated Herald Commons, which was once home to the Syracuse Herald-Journal. The building and restaurant's new owners kept some of the remnants of the old publishing house. An exposed crane over the bar once moved massive rolls of paper toward the printing press.

"We wanted to restore the place," said manager and partner Cody Fedele, "and keep it historic. Building a sense of community. That's what's important to me."

The PressRoom also pays homage to sports. The tables and bars are topped with an old basketball court. Gym lockers are tucked into corners. For the next few months, a Philadelphia Eagles sign will hang right-side-up over other, upside-down NFL teams, in a nod to last season.

"I'm a Giants fan," Fedele said. "It's hard."

The pub menu reads like a newspaper. The daily "scoup" will explain the day's soup. The weather report comes under the specials. Most of the dishes are classic pub fare: pizza, wings, sandwiches and burgers.
