Welcome to Bugs Bunny Day!

On April 30, 1938, a cartoon character known as "Happy Rabbit" made his debut in a short Warner Bros. cartoon titled "Porky's Hare Hunt." He was the prototype for Bugs Bunny, having a similar personality, but looking a bit different. It is on the anniversary of the release of this short film that we celebrate Bugs Bunny Day.

Bugs Bunny is an anthropomorphic gray hare with a relaxed and passive personality—but he is also a trickster. He became a cultural icon and is best known for starring in Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies, short films that were made by Warner Bros. from the 1930s through the 1960s. He appeared in many other formats, such as feature films, comic books, and musical records. He has appeared in more films than any other cartoon character, and TV Guide listed him as the greatest cartoon character of all time. In 1997, he became the first cartoon character to appear on a postage stamp. He even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The name "Bugs" or "Bugsy" means crazy or loopy and was used as a nickname in the first half of the twentieth century. For example, mobster Benjamin Siegel is best known as Bugsy Siegel. Today the name survives in phrases such as "You're bugging me," and in Bugs Bunny.

College football: 14 ACC players who could break out this fall (ncaa.com)

ATLANTIC DIVISION
BOSTON COLLEGE
ELIJAH ROBINSON, WR, Sr. — Robinson had two long catches during the spring game — including a 44-yard touchdown. After being converted from quarterback, the 6-foot-2, 200-pounder had problems with drops as a freshman but could find a spot in the receiving corps this year.

CLEMSON
TREVOR LAWRENCE, QB, Fr. — Lawrence should seemingly wait his time on the bench behind returning starter in senior to be Kelly Bryant. Instead, Clemson fans have swooned over the long-haired, strong-armed newcomer who broke Deshaun Watson's Georgia state prep records for yards and touchdowns.

NORTH CAROLINA STATE

NAKIA ROBINSON JR., RB, Fr. — Coach Dave Doeren's team needs some depth at running back with Nyheim Hines leaving early for the NFL. Robinson offers some upside; Doeren singled him out after the team's rain-soaked spring game when he ran for 87 yards and a TD.

SYRACUSE
TOMMY DEVITO, QB, Fr. — The well-regarded redshirt freshman has a rifle arm and got the majority of the reps with the first unit in spring ball. He will enter summer camp as the backup to senior Eric Dungey, who was recovering from a leg injury and didn't have his normal spring workload.

Why the running game is the most important part of SU football’s offense – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Raucci)

For the past two seasons, we have been told and promised over and over again that SU football’s offense is going to move fast. We’ve been told that it’s going to be one of the most productive and frenetically-paced offenses in the country. For the most part, that promise has come to fruition.

Despite finishing last season at just 4-8, the Orange still ranked 23rd in the country in total offense and 18th in the nation in passing. What’s concerning, however, is the fact that it always feels like there’s something missing. That something missing is a productive and efficient running game that doesn’t come from the legs of Eric Dungey.

Syracuse finished 2017 ranked 70th in the country in rushing offense, but while that doesn’t seem all that bad considering its record, the picture becomes a bit scarier when you dive a bit deeper. Dungey led the team in rushing last season with nearly 600 yards on the ground. That’s more than any SU running back and, keep in mind, Dungey only played nine of the team’s 12 games a season ago.

How Did Syracuse Football Fare in the NFL Draft? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

It took until day three, but Syracuse football made a late splash in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Orange was in danger of going back to back years without an NFL Draft pick since the 1948 and 1949 drafts, but a late call on Saturday nixed that possibility. Here’s how it all shaped up this weekend.

Zaire Franklin, LB: Indianapolis Colts, Round 7 Pick 235

Franklin was the lone SU player selected in this year’s draft and the first since the Broncos took punter Riley Dixon in 2016. Most people thought Steve Ishmael would be the most likely to get drafted, but the Colts took a chance on Franklin. The senior blew away the competition at his pro day after not getting invited to the draft combine. He was the most consistent player on the Orange’s defense throughout his time at SU and was a great leader both on and off the field. Don’t be surprised if that work ethic and personality leads to a long NFL career.

Steve Ishmael, WR: Indianapolis Colts, Undrafted Free Agent

Ishmael is probably the most frustrated of this group. He seemed like a receiver that could have gone in the 5th or 6th round, but instead went undrafted. After a career year last season, he joins a Colts team with some talent on the outside in TY Hilton as well as a great quarterback situation with Andrew Luck. We’ll see if Ishmael can latch on with Franklin in Indy and if this serves as motivation moving forward.

http://allsportsdiscussion.com/2018/04/28/2018-nfl-draft-acc-winners-virginia-tech-nc-state/ (allsportsdiscussion.com; Fann)

For some ACC schools it was business as usual. FSU, Miami, and Clemson are the three ACC schools most known for producing NFL talent. Florida State and Miami had nice drafts with 6 players each being picked. FSU and Miami have been producing NFL talent for years. Clemson had 3 players picked, which seems a little low for them, but next year they could have 7-10 players drafted so they are fine. This year a couple of ACC schools really stood out for being NFL Draft winners – Virginia Tech and NC State.

Virginia Tech and NC State are at the cusp of being legitimate challengers to the ACC’s reigning top program – Clemson. It’s starts by closing the talent gap, and with the 2018 draft results Dave Doeren and Justin Fuente can walk into any recruits homes and just show a tape of this year’s NFL draft. Nothing elevates recruiting faster than proving you can get players to the NFL.

The ACC produces more NFL draft picks that any other conference – save the SEC. To lead the conference in draft picks is a significant accomplishment. NC State pulled the trick with 7 NFL picks including top 5 pick Bradley Chubb. If Dave Doeren properly manages the results of the last 10 months from a 9 win season to a great draft, then 2017-2018 could be the foundation year that gets the Wolfpack to the next level. This draft proves he can develop his players into legitimate NFL prospects.

Virginia Tech didn’t have quite as many players drafted as NC State. 5 Virginia Tech players were drafted, but where the Hokies cashed in was on opening night when the most people are watching the draft. They became the first school to have a a pair of brothers drafted in the first round. – Tremaine Edmunds, LB and Terrell Edmunds, S. Virginia Tech is a fine football school, but multiple first round picks are Alabama Ohio State type stuff there.

Justin Fuente just found his recruiting pitch for years to come.

For NC State and Virginia Tech, the 2018 NFL Draft couldn’t have went better and you can bet future recruits for those schools are going to know.

ACC football represents second most 1st round picks by conference (rubbingtherock.com; Messenger)

Despite a relatively small output from Clemson this year, the ACC still managed to put out a decent amount of 1st round picks in 2018. According to ESPN, the SEC churned out the most 1st round talent once again.

Of the 32 first round selections, 10 were from the SEC, headlined by Georgia’s Roquan Smith at 8th overall. Six first round selections came from the ACC, with NC State’s Bradley Chubb coming off the board the earliest at No. 5.

The narrative surrounding college football for the past decade has been the SEC’s dominance. There is no disputing the amount of National Championship’s the SEC has won over the past decade.

That being said, Alabama has largely carried the entire conference on their back. Nick Saban and the Tide have claimed five National Championships over the past nine seasons.

The same can be said for the SEC’s dominance of the NFL Draft. 4 out of the 10 SEC players taken in the first round came from Alabama. Which begs the question, does the SEC dominate college football, or does Alabama dominating college football?

ACC First Round Picks
The ACC continues to improve their reputation as a legitimate football conference. They had six players from four different college programs selected in the first round of the draft.

South Carolina HC Will Muschamp and Clemson HC Dabo Swinney

Sapakoff: Ranking SEC and ACC football coaches 1-28; Saban and Swinney still at top, Muschamp moves up (postandcourier.com; Sapakoff)

The road to Santa Clara is paved with good intentions.

Good hiring decisions, too.

Georgia replaced Clemson as Alabama’s College Football Playoff national championship game opponent last season thanks to Kirby Smart’s quick, thorough renovation project. This year’s rush to reach a January national title game booked for the cradle of cyber technology requires exceptional leadership to go along with roster talent.

Out with Jim McElwain, Kevin Sumlin, Bret Bielema and Butch Jones.

In with Chad Morris, Willie Taggart, Jeremy Pruitt and Joe Moorhead.

Criteria for ranking SEC and ACC coaches? It’s a mix of accomplishment and projection and this question: Which coach do you want right now if you’re a fan of a Hypothetical State U. Fightin’ Catfish program with a job opening?

The list:

1. Nick Saban, Alabama
SEC rank: 1
SEC West rank: 1
...
...

20. Dino Babers, Syracuse
ACC rank: 12

ACC Atlantic rank: 6

Upset Virginia Tech in 2016 and stunned Clemson in 2017 while going 4-8 both seasons. Time for some consistency.
