Welcome to National Doughnut Day!
National Doughnut Day started in 1938[1] as a fund raiser for Chicago's The Salvation Army. Their goal was to help those in need during the Great Depression, and to honor The Salvation Army "Lassies" of World War I, who served doughnuts to soldiers.
Soon after the US entrance into World War I in 1917, The Salvation Army sent a fact-finding mission to France. The mission concluded that the needs of US enlisted men could be met by canteens/social centers termed "huts" that could serve baked goods, provide writing supplies and stamps, and provide a clothes-mending service. Typically, six staff members per hut would include four female volunteers who could "mother" the boys. These huts were established by The Salvation Army in the United States near army training centers.
About 250 Salvation Army volunteers went to France. Because of the difficulties of providing freshly baked goods from huts established in abandoned buildings near to the front lines, the two Salvation Army volunteers (Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance) came up with the idea of providing doughnuts. These are reported to have been an "instant hit", and "soon many soldiers were visiting The Salvation Army huts". Margaret Sheldon wrote of one busy day: "Today I made 22 pies, 300 doughnuts, 700 cups of coffee."

NC State Football: 2018 Wolfpack Preview and Prediction (athlonsports.com; Staff)
The Wolfpack rank No. 33 in Athlon's Top 130 for 2018.
NC State should have no trouble throwing the ball over the field and may have to do that with so many changes on defense. The Wolfpack boast the ACC's best quarterback and wide receiver corps, which they will need to come through after losing seven players to the NFL Draft. Dave Doeren will need some new playmakers to emerge on defense if he wants his team to finish in the upper half of the Atlantic Division for the second straight year.
Previewing NC State Football's Offense for 2018
With quarterback Ryan Finley, his top three receivers and three starters on the line back, the NC State offense is in position to carry the load in 2018. Finley decided a sixth year of college was better than a jump to the NFL. The 6'4", 210-pound graduate transfer threw for 3,518 yards and completed 65.1 percent of his passes in 2017, his second year as the Wolfpack starter. He threw for 17 touchdowns with six interceptions.
He didn't compile those numbers without some help. "There's no doubt we have the best receiving corps in the ACC," Finley says. Kelvin Harmon has developed into Finley's favorite target. What the athletic 6'3", 213-pound junior lacks in speed, he makes up for in his ability to win 50-50 balls. Harmon led the Wolfpack with 1,017 yards on 69 receptions last season. He also caught four touchdowns. Junior Jakobi Meyers was a breakout performer last season and is in for a bigger role with the loss of Jaylen Samuels. A converted quarterback, Meyers is elusive with the ball and has breakaway speed. He caught 63 passes for 727 yards with five touchdowns.

Syracuse University named 'Booty Call Capital' by online delivery service (PS; Herbert)
Syracuse University is the "Booty Call Capital" of America, according to an online delivery service.
goPuff, a website that delivers some groceries and other convenience store-like products, says SU students order more condoms than any other college it serves. The company branded Syracuse as the "Booty Call Capital" based on customer data from the 2017-18 school year.
The dubious honor comes less than a year after Syracuse University returned to the top 5 party schools ranking from the 2017 edition of the Princeton Review. SU was No. 1 in 2014 and has repeatedly appeared in the top 10 for partying, "lots of beer," hard liquor and school spirit; Playboy magazine also named Syracuse as a top 10 party school in 2015.
Other superlatives from goPuff include "Most Hungover" (for alcohol "recovery" orders at the University of Arizona-Tucson), "Most Likely to be Pulling an All-Nighter" (energy drinks at the University of Pennsylvania), "Biggest Spooners" (ice cream at University of Pittsburgh) and Spiciest School (spicy snacks at Penn State).
The website, gopuff.com, was founded in 2013 as a "convenience store on wheels" and currently serves more than 30 major U.S. cities and over 50 college campuses. The Philadelphia-based startup allows customers to order more than 2,000 products for delivery, including "dranks," "munchies," home goods, pet supplies, party essentials, electronics, "puff stuff" and beer.
goPuff isn't the only online ordering service used by SU students, either. Syracuse University was named No. 1 for late-night snacks twice by GrubHub, a free online and mobile ordering site, and UberEATS launched in the Syracuse area last year.
