Welcome to National Graham Cracker Day!

National Graham Cracker Day is observed annually on July 5th. The graham cracker was originally invented as a “health food” as part of the “Graham Diet”. Developed by Presbyterian minister, Sylvester Graham in the early 1800s, graham crackers were originally made from whole-wheat graham flour with added bran and wheat germs. The minister believed this snack would curb a variety of sinful cravings.

Modern graham crackers are made with bleached white flour and come in a variety of flavors including honey, cinnamon and chocolate. While a delicious snack on their own, they are also terrific ingredients for desserts. Crushed graham crackers blended with butter and pressed into pie tins or springform pans make excellent crusts when lightly toasted. One of the most popular treats made with graham crackers is the S’more.

Most Important Game on Syracuse’s Schedule – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)

Next month, Syracuse football returns. Let that sink in. On August 31, Dino Babers and company will embark on twelve-game schedule that features a trip to the bronx, a matchup with a national championship favorite and a rematch with a team that made them look silly in the Carrier Dome last November. With that being said, which game is the most important? Hint: it’s not one of the matchups I just alluded too.

When Florida State rolls into the Carrier Dome for a week-three showdown with Syracuse, the Orange better be ready to go. Not only is it SU’s first nationally televised game, but it’s the squad’s first ACC game of the season. Those two factors alone, however, aren’t nearly enough to make this the pivotal game on Syracuse’s schedule.

Orange Fizz on Twitter

This game will set the tempo for the season. I’ll admit, there are plenty of other crucial games, including the opener against Western Michigan. Losing that game would be tough. Not to mention, the Orange faces Tim Lester (WMU head coach) and Tim Daoust (WMU defensive coordinator), two important members of Scott Shafer’s Syracuse staff. We all know what happened the last time this sort of thing happened.

http://allsportsdiscussion.com/2018/07/04/ranking-the-5-best-cornerbacks-in-the-acc-for-2018/ (allsportsdiscussion.com; Fann)

1) Mark Gilbert, Duke
Duke with the top Linebacker and Cornerback in the ACC? Yep it’s true – David Cutcliffe has definitely elevated the talent base in Durham. Mark Gilbert made several pre-season All-America and All-ACC lists. He is also a Jim Thorpe candidate. Gilbert had 6 interceptions last year, and he’s only entering his junior season.

3) Trayvon Mullen, Clemson
Clemson’s Trayvon Mullen is only starting to touch the surface of his potential. NFLDraftBible says he is raw, but could be the best CB ever to come out of Clemson. NFL Scouts think he could have 1st or 2nd round talent. He had 3 interceptions in 2017.

3) Michael Jackson, Miami
Michael Jackson of Miami had a 2017 season that saw him intercept 4 passes in just his first season starting. If Malek Young had not suffered a career ending injury, Jackson and Young may have formed the best CB tandem in the ACC. He was a 2nd team All-ACC selection last year.

4) Levonta Taylor, Florida State
Levonta Taylor is another solid CB in a long line of quality CBs at Florida. He had a strong sophomore season, and should be even better as a junior. Taylor had 2 interceptions last season with one being returned for a touchdown.

5) Essang Bassey, Wake Forest
There are several good looking junior cornerbacks in this list, and Essang Bassey of Wake Forest is another one. He was twice ACC defensive back of the week last season, and had 3 interceptions to go along with 75 tackles.

Georgia Tech’s Transition to Adidas is More Than Just a Change in Uniforms (fromtherumbleseat.com; Weaver)

It brings me great pleasure to share with you that our long, national nightmare is over.

As the clock struck midnight early this morning, Georgia Tech is officially no longer under contract with Russell Athletic. The Institute is officially an Adidas school. (And damn, does it feel good to write that.)

We’ve discussed for years the issue that Georgia Tech has had with branding, no more visible than in its ongoing affiliation with a brand that recruits loathe and from which peer institutions have been separating from in droves.

The official transition is being met with minimal fanfare from the school or its new apparel partner -- other schools making similar transitions lately have had big release parties and opportunities to be the first to purchase new merch, while Georgia Tech & Adidas will settle for a few social media hits and a promise of more releases in the coming months. Despite the subdued nature of the occasion, make no mistake about it – today officially signifies a milestone that begins new era in Georgia Tech’s Athletics’ Department.

The final column I wrote before stepping out of my role as manager at FTRS was about how impressed I was at Todd Stansbury’s impact and progress in such a short time as Athletic Director on the Flats, especially in comparison to the stagnation and inaction of his predecessor. In the time since I posted that article, I’ve only continued to be impressed with the things Stansbury has done in attempting to get Georgia Tech’s Athletics’ Department to “catch up” to others after so much went unattended to in previous years. Between starting a major fundraising effort for enhancing the ability of Georgia Tech’s teams to compete and reinventing the buildings that serve as GTAA’s epicenter, to driving unprecedented levels of GTAA alumni involvement, to making major investments and updates to the branding of Georgia Tech Athletics, one thing is clearer than ever: Todd Stansbury and his department are 100% committed to the success of the Yellow Jackets’ athletics programs, both on and off the field.

Report: Fox, Big Ten Network making push to hire Paul Finebaum - FootballScoop (footballscoop.com; Barnett)

Imagine Sean Hannity anchoring a show on CNN. John Madden calling an NBA Finals game. Conan O’Brien hosting the NBC evening news.

We could be on the cusp of a similar up-is-down, cats-are-dogs type reality in the college football media ecosphere, as The Sporting News reported Tuesday that Fox and Big Ten Network are actively pursuing Paul Finebaum to join their network properties. (Fox owns 51 percent of BTN.) Sinclair Broadcasting Group, Cumulus Media and Sirius XM are also making a run at Finebaum, according to the report.
