Clemson football: Revenge, dominance on the line when Tigers play Syracuse, Georgia Tech (independentmail.com; Louis-Jacques)

Clemson football doesn't lose terribly often; so with just four losses in the past three seasons, each defeat tends to stick in the team's mind.

While two of those four losses were to an eventual national champion, Alabama, the other two were upsets against teams Clemson shouldn't have come close to losing to — Pittsburgh in 2016 and Syracuse in 2017.

While the Tigers didn't get a chance to avenge the loss to Pitt, that won't be the case with Syracuse this season.

But before Clemson can exact its revenge on the only ACC to beat it last season, Dabo Swinney's squad must deal with a rambling wreck of an old foe in Atlanta.

Georgia Tech (5-6, 4-4) - Sept. 22

It's every fan's favorite game to watch each season ... OK, maybe not, but Clemson's defensive front seven certainly enjoys the challenge of playing Georgia Tech's famous triple-option attack each season.

Led by first-year starting quarterback, TaQuon Marshall, the Yellow Jackets averaged 307 rushing yards per game last season with a 5.3 yards-per-carry average. Marshall led the team with 1,146 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns after bursting onto the college football scene with a 249-yard, five touchdown performance in Tech's season-opener against Tennessee.

Orange Watch: Pre-season Syracuse football talk is around the corner - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: The annual ACC Football Kickoff event occurs over two days next week in downtown Charlotte (Coastal Division coaches and players on July 18, Atlantic Division coaches and players the next day), setting the table for 2018 college football talk heating up in the middle of July. The traditional summer days of socializing, golf, and interviews of all sorts will also provide the first pre-season exposure for a Syracuse program that continues to seek its identity in Dino Babers third season, and heads into the sixth year (2013 member) of ACC play sporting a 22-39 overall/11-29 conference record with one bowl game victory in that period.

Late last week the ACC released the list of two players from each conference team who will join their respective head coaches at The Westin Charlotte, with the media coming from all angles to take advantage of the relaxed atmosphere to help offer glimpses of what to expect from the 14 programs for the upcoming season.
Back for his second straight year at “the Kickoff” will be Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey in his final go-round as a great brand ambassador of the program, one that Babers (along with athletic director John Wildhack) is building slowly but surely in about as competitive a league as there is anywhere nationally, and desperate for a minimum of six wins and bowl eligibility this coming post season to stay relevant in the Atlantic Division.

No doubt Dungey, the only active FBS quarterback with over 6000+ passing yards and 1000+ rushing yards, will be asked about making it through his entire last year in orange healthy, and that elusive bowl game bid. Dungey is the active ACC leader in four statistical categories (quarterback rushing yardage (1,239), TD passes (40), total offense (7,711 yards), and rushing TDs by a quarterback (20), garnering a lot of mention for pre-season all-ACC recognition.

Syracuse Football: Canadian pipeline continues with OL Matthew Bergeron (itlh.com; Carey)

The Syracuse football squad picked up another 2019 commit north of the border. Our recruiting analyst breaks down the tale of the tape on this prospect.

Syracuse has received another commitment from a Canadian, this time an offensive lineman. The Orange already have a commitment from 2019 Canadian linebacker Geoff Cantin.

On Monday night, Mike McAllister of CuseNation.com, reported the 2019 OL, Matthew Bergeron committed to Syracuse. Bergeron camped at Syracuse earlier in the summer, and like many of the other Canadian recruits, is a relative unknown. Bergeron is actually a teammate of Geoff Cantin in Quebec.

According to Matthew Vachon, of La Nouvelle union, Bergeron also was contacted and offered by Buffalo and Rutgers.

Although Bergeron is relatively unknown, and not rated by any major recruiting sites, he certainly looks the part of a power five conference lineman. Bergeron is listed at 6-foot 6 and weighs roughly 290-pounds.

Bergeron is the eighth commitment for Syracuse in the class of 2019, and the second offensive lineman, joining Anthony Red.

Former Syracuse football DE Justin Ellis transfers to Georgia Southern (PS; Bailey)

Former Syracuse football defensive end Justin Ellis has transferred to Georgia Southern, the school announced in June.

In his lone season with the Orange, Ellis appeared in two games and recorded a tackle against Central Connecticut State. The Georgia native was one of the final additions to SU's Class of 2017, arriving as a walk-on before being put on scholarship prior to the fall semester.

Ellis, who announced his intention to transfer in May, will have to sit out next season due to NCAA rules before regaining eligibility as a redshirt sophomore in 2019.

SU projects to start juniors Kendall Coleman and Alton Robinson at defensive end in 2018 with a handful of reserves including sophomore Kingsley Jonathan and redshirt junior Brandon Berry competing for snaps behind them.

Ellis, who participated in spring practice, is one of seven players to transfer from Syracuse this offseason. Defensive backs Juwan Dowels (Western Michigan), Rodney Williams (Temple), Cordell Hudson (Middle Tennessee State) and Daivon Ellison (Duquesne), as well as defensive tackle Kayton Samuels (Indiana), have already announced their destinations.

NY approves $19 million project to transform DeWitt rail yard into 'inland port' (PS; Knauss)

A rail yard in the suburbs of Syracuse will be expanded to load and unload international imports and exports under a $19 million project to be funded by state taxpayers, New York transportation officials announced today.
A long-awaited contract between the state Department of Transportation and CSX Corp., owner of the rail yard, has received final approval, officials said. Under the deal, the state will pay the $19 million cost of the project, which can be increased to as much as $21 million if state officials agree.
When the project is completed, ocean-bound containers of lumber, metals, soybeans or other Upstate products can be taken by train from the DeWitt rail yard straight to freighters in the Port of New York/New Jersey. Imports from abroad can be loaded directly from ships onto trains and brought to DeWitt.
State officials said the rail service should be significantly cheaper than sending cargo to the ocean port by truck. They hope to reduce costs by $500 per container.
"We're making the Central New York area more economically competitive, because through this project we'll be able to reduce the cost of transporting goods in and out,'' said Ron Epstein, executive deputy commissioner at the DOT.

The project will convert the rail yard into an "import-export facility,'' Epstein said.
That means installing new crane equipment and lifts to load and unload cargo from trains and trucks. The project also involves upgrading security at the site and constructing areas to stack shipping containers. Some of the grant also will pay for deploying technology to allow for International imports and exports, officials said.
Under the contract, CSX has 18 months to complete the project after receiving all the necessary permits. DOT officials said they hope the inland port will be operating before the end of 2019.
