Welcome to Lammas (the Gule of August)!

Lammas, which takes its name from "loaf-mass," is the first harvest festival of the year, and celebrates the first wheat harvest. Other grains are also harvested around the time of Lammas, such as oats, rye, and barley, as are plants such as mint, meadowsweet, sunflower, and Calendula. Lammas is celebrated in some English-speaking countries in the Northern Hemisphere, such as Scotland, Wales, England, and Northern Ireland.

On the day, Lammas bread has traditionally been made from the new wheat crop, often being baked into shapes such as wheat, owls, or other figures. It was customary to bring a loaf to church where it would be blessed. In Anglo-Saxon England, it was then sometimes broken into four pieces and put at the four corners of barns, to protect the recently harvested grain inside. The day has also traditionally been marked by making corn dollies, and Lammas charms such as sprigs of mint, green Lammas ribbons, and twigs that are bundled together, called besom. Feasts have also been common on the day.

2018 ACC football: Syracuse hopes for a better November (roanoke.com; Berman)

The Syracuse football team is hoping to avoid another 0-for-November.

The Orange went 4-8 in each of Dino Babers’ first two seasons as the school’s coach. In both 2016 and 2017, Syracuse ruined its shot at a winning season by going 0-4 in the month of November.

“Going into November, we know we have to do better,” defensive tackle Chris Slayton said this month during ACC media days at a Charlotte, North Carolina, hotel. “That’s what we’ve been talking about this whole offseason.

“We have to finish the season out strong. I think it’s the year to do that.”

Syracuse has suffered four straight losing seasons, including the final two years of Scott Shafer’s stint as coach. Syracuse has won one November game in that four-year span.

“I do think you need to address the issue,” Babers said. “We’re looking at it at a different angle and trying to do some different things to see if it turns out okay.

“You’ve got to put a light on it and say, ‘Hey, you want to know how come we don’t win? This is one of the reasons we don’t win,’ whether you turn the ball over too much or you don’t score in the red zone … [and] … it’s being healthy enough in November to have an opportunity to have the success you need to have.”

NC State Wolfpack — 2018 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

As we countdown to kickoff in August, we’re going to be doing a team-by-team preview each week over the summer. SU will continue its 2018 ACC schedule when it plays NC State on Oct. 27.

TOP 25 FINISH: For just the third time in the last 20 years, NC State finished in the top 25 in 2017, compiling a surprising 9-4 record and a 52-31 win over Arizona State in the Sun Bowl. The No. 23 Wolfpack also broke the stranglehold of the dominance of Florida State and Clemson in the competitive Atlantic Division, finishing second to the Tigers. To maintain the momentum, head coach Dave Doeren is going to need to rely on a potent offense to cover for a defense that lost the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in defensive lineman Bradley Chubb. “Five years ago we had zero wins in the ACC, this year we tied the school record,” Doeren said. “Five years ago we had no draft picks, this year we broke the school record. So the progress is there. Everyone sees it.”

WHO TO WATCH FOR: Though NC State set a school record by having seven players selected in the 2018 NFL Draft, Doeren scored a huge offseason coup by retaining sixth-year quarterback Ryan Finley. All he did in 2017 was throw for 3,518 yards and 17 touchdowns, while completing 65.1 percent of his passes. He will have an all-star trio to throw to, headlined by Kelvin Harmon, Jakobi Meyers and Stephen Louis. “In my opinion, [we have] the best trio wide receiving corps in the country,” Finley said. “Just can’t speak enough words about how hard they work and just kind of how they approach the game and the level of preparation they put into the game and obviously very talented.”

Belle Vernon's Guess could be WPIAL's most talented kicker - Trib HSSN (tribhssn.triblive.com; Beckner Jr)

When it comes to kicking and punting a football, Belle Vernon’s Guess is not as good as yours — he’s probably a lot better.

Cameron Guess, an incoming junior, is on the fast track to becoming a Division I college player with his booming kicks, post-splitting accuracy and hanging punts. And while he has flown under the radar like so many top special teams contributors do as they find their way, his stock is rising.

Guess already has drawn attention from a number of larger programs, including Pitt, Syracuse and Ohio University, a byproduct of his accelerated reputation within Kohl’s Kicking Camps.

The national camps bring hundreds of strong-legged prospects together in one place over the summer and rate their performances. Scholarships are rare for kickers and punters as the highest level so any format that makes analyzing them easier for college coaches only can increase their chances at roster spots.

“It’s like the ESPN rankings for kicking and punting,” said Guess, who connected on 31 extra points and 26 touchbacks last season for the Leopards. His longest punt tracked 61 yards. “They really help to get your name out there. Next year, I am going to take game-day visits to Ohio State, Toledo, Syracuse, Pitt and Ohio. I didn’t expect to talk to schools until I was a senior.”

The five-star Guess is ranked the No. 5 best punter and No. 12 kicker in the nation by Kohl’s in the Class of 2020.

Lions sign OT Jamar McGloster and release OT Adam Bisnowaty (apnews.com; AP)

The Detroit Lions have signed offensive tackle Jamar McGloster and released offensive tackle Adam Bisnowaty.

The moves were made Tuesday, the team’s first day off during training camp.

San Francisco signed McGloster as an undrafted free agent earlier this year and released him when the 49ers reported for training camp last week. The 6-foot-6, 319-pound McGloster started 24 straight games at Syracuse and played in a total of 30 games.

Bisnowaty has one game of NFL experience, a start for the New York Giants last season.

Syracuse Football: Parris Bennett is starting a new career venture (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Former Syracuse football star Parris Bennett is starting a new career venture after announcing his retirement from the NFL last week.

The Syracuse football fanbase was shocked last week when Parris Bennettannounced his retirement from the Green Bay Packers.

After going undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft, Bennett quickly found a deal with the Packers. It seemed like a logical fit with the Packers having lackluster depth at the position.

My sources out in Green Bay had really positive things to say about his future and there was even an expectation that he’d be a dark horse to make the final 53. But due to recurring injury issues, he decided to step away from the game he loves before things potentially got worse.

When the announcement became official on Instagram, I reached out to Bennett to check on him and make sure everything was okay. After speaking with him for a bit, it seemed like he was trying to figure out what he wanted to do with his future.

So after some talking back and forth, we came to an agreement. Parris Bennett will be joining Paul A. Esden Jr. on ‘Drive Time Sports’ on The Score 1260 every week to talk Syracuse football starting this Fall.

Bennett will be venturing into a new field that he has great interest in as it pertains to sports talk radio. Here was his exclusive statement on this new partnership starting this Fall:

Clemson Football: Ranking the Tigers’ 2018 Opponents by Difficulty (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)

...
10. vs. Syracuse Orange

I really believe that Syracuse could take a step forward this season after going just 4-8 in 2017.

The Orange are led by quarterback Eric Dungey, who is one of the best in the conference. Dino Babers likes to run that up-tempo spread-offense and that will bode well for Syracuse this season, even with them having to replace a couple of wide receivers from last year.

Defensively, I think they can only get better after giving up more than 30 points per game in 2017.

Unfortunately for the Orange, though, they beat Clemson last season. It was about as fluky as it comes, very fitting for a Friday the 13th outing. However, I just don’t see the Tigers losing to Syracuse, or even playing a close game with them, a second year.

Clemson will be focused for this one and it just won’t be close.

Daily Five: 5 (Potentially) Stupid ACC Preseason Predictions (collegefootballnews.com; Fiutak)

Before you get all hot and bothered with what you’re about to read …

Did you really think North Carolina was going to be 3-9 last season?

If someone told you before the season that Boston College would go bowling after a 2-4 start, or that Florida State would have to beg for a date with ULM to get a sixth win and a bowl appearance, would you have believed it?

How about if someone suggested that Syracuse was going to beat Clemson, and then lose its last five games?

They’re the wild, wacky, and crazy things that make each season fun, exciting and special. Throwing five (potentially) stupid predictions at the wall to see if they stick …

5. Everyone from the Atlantic will go bowling

Really? All seven teams from a division are going to get a swag bag game?

It’s not actually all that far-fetched. Syracuse was the only team in the Atlantic that didn’t go bowling last year, and it would’ve come close had it not gacked away the Middle Tennessee game early on.

This year, the Orange will beat Western Michigan, Wagner and UConn for a base of three wins, and it’ll find a way to get three more victories to finally get over a hump under Dino Babers.

Syracuse Orange

Aug. 31st, @Western Michigan
As Dino Babers looks to continue to rebuild this program, the Orange travels to face a potentially-dangerous MAC team. Not a bad way to open the season.
Grade: B

Sept. 8th, Wagner
Syracuse needs wins, so playing an FCS team isn’t the worst thing.
Grade: F

Sept. 22nd, UConn
UConn has been up-and-down in recent years, but this should be a good judge of where Syracuse is at. I’ll (almost) never complain about P5 teams playing AAC teams.
Grade: B-

November 17th, @Notre Dame (in Yankee Stadium)
This is technically a road game, though the venue is closer to Syracuse than to South Bend. Yes, it’s part of the scheduling agreement. But Syracuse is still losing a potential cupcake game to face Notre Dame.
Grade: A

Overall:
It’s hard to really judge Syracuse right now because it’s hard to know what it needs as a program. This schedule should give us some decent games, though, which is all fans (or neutral fans, at least) can ever ask for.
Grade: B

U of L Insider: Can offense be better this season without Lamar Jackson? (courier-journal.com; Lourim)

Asked on July 19 at the ACC’s football media days how Louisville’s offense will look this season, coach Bobby Petrino did not hesitate.

“I expect us to be better,” Petrino said.

Now, the Cardinals just lost the best player in school history. Quarterback Lamar Jackson was a Heisman Trophy winner and two-time finalist. He was responsible for 74.3 percent of Louisville’s total yardage last season and 73.8 percent the year before.

How could they possibly be better without him?

“I expect us to be more balanced," Petrino said, "the ability to get more guys involved, particularly in the running game.”

That’s a fair statement. Jackson took 46.9 percent of the team’s rushing attempts last season and 49.5 percent in 2016. His successor, Jawon Pass, will not run as often. Pass’ running backs – Dae Williams, Colin Wilson and Trey Smith – will be more involved than 2017’s Reggie Bonnafon and Malik Williams.

At quarterback, Pass bears far more resemblance to Petrino’s traditional starter than Jackson did. In his previous college head coaching stops, Petrino mentored Stefan LeFors, Brian Brohm, Ryan Mallett and Tyler Wilson — all pocket passers.

ACC Football Rx: ACC the deepest 2018 football conference? (accfootballrx.com; HM)

From SBNation: ACC Football 2018 Power Rankings (a few short excerpts):

After previewing every ACC team for 2018, here’s how I think the conference stacks up

There might not be a single bad team in the ACC this year, but there might only be one elite.

Tier 1
1. Clemson

The thing that most caught my eye while writing this year’s batch of ACC previews is that every single team in this league has top-40 potential.

Not everyone will play at a top-40 level, mind you; injuries always strike down some teams. But the potential depth here is staggering.

All that said, there’s still only one surefire national contender. In a conference full of exciting possibilities, the Tigers are the sure thing.

Tier 2
2. Miami
3. Florida State

If the conference produces a second title contender, you have to figure it’s one of these two.

Tier 3
4. NC State
5. Louisville
6. Wake Forest
7. Virginia Tech
8. Duke
9. Boston College
10. Pitt
11. Georgia Tech
12. UNC

These nine teams are mostly interchangeable. Any of them could play at a top-25 level, but only probably three or so will.

Tier 4
13. Syracuse
14. Virginia

Let’s call this Tier 3A instead. I think these two teams have almost as much potential as the teams in the loaded Tier 3; the only difference is that there’s maybe not quite as much upside.
