Welcome to International Day of the World's Indigenous People!

On 23 December 1994, the United Nations General Assembly decided, in its resolution 49/214, that the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People shall be observed on 9 August every year. The date marks the day of the first meeting, in 1982, of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations.
On this day, people from around the world are encouraged to spread the UN’s message on the protection and promotion of the rights of indigenous peoples.
Events at the UN headquarters in New York include messages from high-level UN officials, governments, indigenous peoples and other key leaders; performances by indigenous artists; and panel discussions on emerging issues. Other events are also held worldwide to celebrate the day.

Syracuse Football Position Previews 2018: Defensive Ends – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Singer)

They say injuries are part of the game, and Syracuse’s defensive end unit learned that the hard way last season. Three players at the position endured some sort of health setback, which clearly proved difficult to overcome. The Orange struggled to wreak backfield havoc, ranking 11th in the ACC in team tackles for loss. Looking to improve upon last year’s showing, SU can feel a bit more confident. Kendall Coleman is back, and the unit as a whole does not have any subtractions from last season.
Along with the aforementioned Coleman, Dino Baber’s’ defensive ends will be Alton Robinson, Brandon Berry, Zach Morton, Caleb Okechukwu, and Jake Pickard.

Star of the Group: Alton Robinson
With Coleman battling injuries in the final third of last season, Robinson rose to the occasion. After coming over from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, he led the Orange with five sacks. Robinson now has a year at SU and a full offseason under his belt, two things he didn’t have this time last year. If any of that offseason work pays off, he and Coleman could form a nice two-way edge rush attack. That is health-permitting, of course.
Something to Prove: Kendall Coleman
Coleman’s absence was felt last season, with SU often having trouble penetrating from the edge opposite Robinson. Coleman battled a shoulder injury, but made 28 tackles, with 2.5 of them for loss. In just eight games, Coleman nearly matched his total tackles as a freshman (29), and exceeded his tackles for loss (1.5). That is encouraging for Orange faithful, and Coleman is expected to be back fully healthy for his junior year. With him and Robinson starting at the two end spots, there is no reason Dino Babers’ team doesn’t improve upon its ranking of last in the ACC in sacks.

Syracuse Football: What are the expectations for Dino Babers in 2018? (itlh.com; Patrick)

Entering his third season as the school’s head coach, what should be expected of the Syracuse’s college football team in 2018?

It has been more than two years since Syracuse hired Dino Babers to be the head coach of their college football team. As Syracuse’s fourth head coach since 2005, the school is hoping that Babers is the guy who will lead its college football team back into the national spotlight.

In his first two seasons at Syracuse though, it’s been more of the same for the school’s football program. Although Syracuse has some impressive wins over talented schools like Clemson and Virginia Tech during his tenure, the Orange have still only won eight out of 16 games with Babers as their head coach.

So what should Syracuse’s expectations be for their college football program in year three of the Dino Babers era?

A winning record should not be too much to ask for, should it? The Orange’s football team hasn’t finished with a record over .500 since 2013 when they ended year with a victory over Minnesota in the Texas Bowl and finished 7-6.
What about more than two conference wins in 2018? That is also something Syracuse’s football program has not accomplished since the 2013 season.

In his third season with the school, Babers should be able to lead his football team to at least three victories over ACC opponents in 2018. If not, then his job may be on the line sooner than he would like.

Syracuse Football: Steve Ishmael, Zaire Franklin continue to shine in pros (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Two former Syracuse football stars (Steve Ishmael, Zaire Franklin) are both fighting to make the Indianapolis Colts roster in 2018.

If we’re going to see more Syracuse football players in the pros this season, it’s not going to come easy. Only one player was drafted in 2018 (Zaire Franklin) and all the rest are undrafted free agents taking the toughest road to make the final roster (Steve Ishmael).

While history is certainly on their side when you look at the special connection between Syracuse and Indianapolis with numerous greats playing for this organization: John Mackey, Marvin Harrison, and Dwight Freeney to name a few.

There certainly is tendons between the past and the future, but these players need to create their own legacies. Apparently according to my guy on the grounds in Indianapolis, that’s exactly what these former Orange stars are doing.
Indianapolis Colts Reporter Jake Arthur gave me these exclusive scoops on each of the Syracuse football reprssenatives at #ColtsCamp:

Steve Ishmael
Steve Ishmael came into the Colts’ offseason program and training camp with high expectations. Being one of the league’s highest-rated undrafted free agent and someone who helped edge Marvin Harrison out of Syracuse’s record books, there were a lot of eyes on him as someone who could potentially make the team. He started out slow in camp but has been much more noticeable in the last several practices. He seems to make an impressive play everyday. He has been working most often with the third-team offense, but wide receiver is a relatively open position battle right now.

That scouting report seems to make a ton of sense. Ishmael similarly had a slow start to his Orange career before finally turning on the switch. There are 13 wide receivers listed on the Colts’ official roster sheet and TY Hilton is the only real receiver of note among them. So as Jake alludes, there are openings at wide receiver, Ishmael just has to seize it.

he elephant in the room is that the nickname is "Orange." Yes, the color orange. The word that rhymes with no other word in the dictionary. Changing from "Orangemen" to "Orange" made any uniform decisions a bit tough, especially when it comes to dressing up the helmet on a football team. The block "S" is fine but there is just so much else you can do with these uniforms. The times they go orange-on-orange tops and bottoms with orange helmets is just so garish. Oh, and the numbers font looks like something out of the original "Roller Ball" ... the one from 1975. Ew.

UNC Football: Defining Success for 2018 (tarheelblog.com; Lawrence)

The start of the college football season is less than a month away. On September 1, the North Carolina Tar Heels will travel to the west coast to take on the California Golden Bears in a rematch of last year’s home opener. After stumbling to a dismal 3-9 record last year, the Heels are hoping to avenge last year’s season opening loss.

An early season victory over a Power 5 opponent could be the catalyst for an impressive bounce back season and calm some nerves. It would certainly serve as a warning that preseason predictions which slotted the Heels at sixth in the Coastal may be slightly off base. Yet, a loss wouldn’t necessarily mean the sky is falling or that another losing record is inevitable. This begs the question that many fans are struggling with as the season gets closer.
In 2018, as long as UNC can remain (relatively) healthy, what should define “success” for the UNC football program?
Defining Success in 2018

It’s safe to assume that the Heels aren’t a realistic threat to make the CFB Playoff this season. Barring another captivating 11 game winning streak, an ACC Championship appearance is also unlikely. So, what would give fans, coaches, players, and recruits reasons to be excited when the college football season officially ends in January of 2019?

A bowl appearance? (Yes)

Seven wins? (Eh. Maybe)

U of L Insider: Jaylen Smith’s surgery a bad break for a good teammate (courier-journal.com; Lourim)

Jaylen Smith was the Louisville football team’s only representative on the preseason All-ACC team, but if you ask him, the Cardinals should have had a few more. The others should be happy they have a teammate like Smith.
The senior wide receiver was also one of Louisville’s two player reps at the ACC’s football media days last month. He was asked whether he thought the conference was overlooking his teammates by not putting more of them on the All-ACC ballot and, why, yes he did have thoughts about that, thank you for asking.
Related: U of L Insider: Can offense be better this season without Lamar Jackson?
“Yeah, that’s disrespectful,” Smith said. “It’s just like last year, when they left Dez (Fitzpatrick) off the all-conference team, and Seth (Dawkins), who both had more yards than the second- and third-team guys and the honorable mention. It’s just like, what more do you have to do? They say it’s an individual achievement, but you’re not looking at individual performances. So that’s bogus.”

He continued: “I saw we didn’t have any specialists out there, when (Blanton) Creque was 90 percent and had so many touchbacks, and Mason (King) broke records, and Mitch Hall was an All-American in high school. There’s not many All-American long snappers. So I don’t get how we had none on there.”

Welcome to the Deadspin 25, a college football poll that strives to be more democratic and less useless than every other preseason poll. Leading up to the college football season kickoff, we will give you previews of the 25 teams that you, the readers, voted to be most worthy of writing about. Now, No. 19 Florida State.
There aren’t many times in life that one can say, out loud, that they feel bad for the shitheads that are Florida State fans. When Deondre Francois went down with a broken leg in Week 1 last season, it almost slipped out.

Francois wasn’t perfect as a redshirt freshman, but he was certainly entertaining and productive enough to compete in the ACC. Instead, the Seminoles had to rely on true freshman James Blackman to sling the ball, a harrowing situation that yielded results poor enough that head coach Jimbo Fisher decided this year was the one to jump from Tallahassee. In December, with the regular season finale yet to be played and Florida State teetering on the edge of bowl eligibility at five wins, Fisher confirmed reports that had been flying around throughout November, officially signing a 10-year deal with Texas A&M and trashing his Christmas tree.

ACC Football Preview

A look at the top football teams in the ACC heading into the 2018 season. Matt Yurus reports.

ACC Football Rx: 2018 Preseason Playoff Odds (ESPN) (accfootbasllrx.com; HM)

From ESPN: Playoff Predictor: Clemson has best shot, Notre Dame could surprise
If there's one team to bank on making the College Football Playoff this year, it ought to be Clemson -- and it isn't even that close. While Alabama is the defending national champion, Dabo Swinney's team has a 67% chance to reach the playoff -- a full 20% better than the Crimson Tide.

How did ESPN come up with these numbers? It's a mathematical model derived from the CFP committee's past behavior in its rankings (both in-season and on selection day) throughout the first four years of the playoff system... through study of the committee, ESPN Analytics identified five key factors that determine each team's chance to reach the playoff:

  • Strength of Record (how much teams have accomplished)
  • FPI (how good teams are)
  • Number of losses (part of SOR, but the committee places even moreemphasis on losses)
  • Conference championships
  • Independent status (i.e. the Notre Dame favoritism factor).
Strength of Record is the most important factor: 15 of the 16 playoff teams in the past four years have ranked in the top four of Strength of Record on selection day.

Why are the Tigers so far ahead of Alabama? Two key reasons.
1. FPI considers Clemson to be the best team in college football this season, thanks in large part to having more returning starters.
2. Clemson has a much easier path to a conference championship.

How do other ACC teams rank compared to the field? Here's the full breakdown of the 20 teams most likely to reach the playoff:

Chance To Reach Playoff, Per Playoff Predictor
TeamPlayoffChamps
Clemson Tigers67%24%
Alabama Crimson Tide47%14%
Georgia Bulldogs46%13%
Notre Dame Fighting Irish42%10%

Miami football loss of 2019 DT Daxon opens door for other targets (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

The Miami football team’s loss of 2019 verbal commit three-star defensive tackle Denzel Daxon is not a huge de-commitment for the Hurricanes next recruiting class. Daxon’s loss leaves Miami with recent commit Jalar Holley as the only Defensive tackle for 2019.
...
...
The Hurricanes are also recruiting four-star defensive tackles Tyler Davis from Apopka, Florida, Quashon Fuller from Lehigh Akers, Florida and Fort Myers Dunbar’s Derick Hunter. The Miami staff is additionally working on three-star defensive tackles Jason Blissett from New York Poly Prep and Mike Morris from American Heritage.
Daxon still has several options left for where he will decide to play college football. Among the schools reportedly interested are Georgia, Florida, Georgia Tech and Tennessee. All seven schools on his list are in Power Five conferences.

Rise N Shine Diner: Bringing dessert to breakfast (Dining out review) (PS; Paventi)

Danielle Mercuri took over the Rise N Shine Diner in 2012. Then she did something sugary and brave, considering the place already had a loyal following from the nearby traffic on Interstate 690, the New York Thruway and Carrier Circle.

She scrapped the menu, introducing funky, offbeat takes to classic diner dishes. Her lineup of pancakes, waffles and French toast combined to create an entirely different meal: dessert breakfast.

Consider the pancakes for a moment. You can get plain buttermilk pancakes ($2.29 for one, $3.29 for two and $4.29 for three) the size of the plate on which they are served. But why would you, when there are a dozen other varieties featuring fresh fruit, candy and other add-ins? The bananas and cream pancakes ($3.29 for one, $5.29 for two) feature sliced bananas in the batter, as opposed to a compote on top, and a generous helping of whipped cream. The pancakes we had were sweet and springy with a bronze exterior studded by banana slices. The fruit was warm and soft, nearly to the point of melting.
