Welcome to National Creamsicle Day!

In 1905, eleven-year-old Frank Epperson encased vanilla ice cream inside of frozen fruit juice and called it an Epsicle. His creation is similar to what we now call a Creamsicle, the cool treat which we celebrate today. The Creamsicle has a flat bar shape with rounded ends, vanilla cream at its center, and a fruity ice covering. Because of its two main components, it is sometimes known as a 50-50 bar. The classic flavor is orange, but it comes in a variety of flavors, including raspberry, lime, cherry, grape, and blueberry. It is also available in healthier options, such as low-fat, low-calorie, or sugar-free.

National Creamsicle Day is being observed today! It has always been observed annually on August 14th.

Louisville Cardinals — 2018 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

NEW DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR: When Todd Grantham left the defensive coordinator post last year to take the same position at Florida, Peter Sirmon took over and the Cardinals struggled, giving up 40 or more points in losses to Wake Forest, Boston College and Clemson. Sirmon read the writing on the wall and left for California, and Petrino tapped former Notre Dame DC Brian VanGorder. He was hardly a popular choice, having been fired four games into his tenure with the Irish, and has held positions at Georgia and Oklahoma State since then. The job will not be easy, with the Cardinals likely not fielding a senior starter on defense. Sophomore Dorian Etheridge is the only player returning that started all 13 games last year, though he led Louisville with 83 tackles, including three for a loss.

WHO TO WATCH FOR: For the first time in four years, a new quarterback will be lining up under center for the Cardinals. All Lamar Jackson did in three years on campus was throw for 9,043 yards and 69 touchdowns, and rush for 4,132 yards and 50 touchdowns on the ground, while winning the 2016 Heisman Trophy. He was selected with the 32nd overall pick of the 2018 draft by the Baltimore Ravens. Jawon Pass is the heir to the throne, though he is a decidedly different quarterback than Jackson, preferring to throw than use his feet. Pass played mop up duty last season, completing nearly 70 percent of his passes when he played, including completing 14 of 19 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown against Murray State. “He’s a natural leader,” head coach Bobby Petrino said. “I do know every player on our team respects him and is looking forward to playing with him.”

PREDICTION: Louisville will play three of four games on the road, starting on Oct. 13 at Boston College, at Clemson on Nov. 3 before a short turnaround Friday night matchup at Syracuse on the 9th. The Cardinals will also open the season on neutral ground (Orlando) against Alabama. That’s a tough schedule for a team that finished a disappointing third in the Atlantic Division in 2017. That schedule lends itself to a trap game in Central New York. SYRACUSE 35, LOUISVILLE 27.

Syracuse Football Position Previews 2018: Quarterback – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

Three years ago, one of Dino’s Babers’ received a gift he had no idea about. Eric Dungey took a chance and came to Syracuse, across the country from his Oregon home. At the time, Babers was the head coach at Bowling Green, a year away from becoming the head man at SU. Now, the two are a match made in heaven. In the Orange’s scheme, Dungey’s dual threat ability has catapulted him to become one of the conference’s top signal callers.

But for the first time in his career, Dungey has someone breathing down his neck. Redshirt freshman Tommy DeVito spent last season on the sidelines, likely against his and Dino Babers will. If the same situation were to arise this season, DeVito undoubtedly would have played last season with the new redshirt rules, which allows a player to play in up to four games before losing redshirt eligibility. He is arguably the most talented player on the Orange’s roster as a former ESPN top 300 recruit. Now, DeVito may have a chance to be “the guy” on the team. Babers has even said that the prized prospect will have a chance to compete for the starting job with Dungey in fall camp.

While, Dungey is still the likely starter, he has never had competition in his career. His freshman year he came in as the backup to Terrel Hunt and assumed the starting role after Hunt’s season-ending injury. Since then, his only competition has been Zack Mahoney, a walk-on turned scholarship quarterback. No disrespect to Mahoney because he did provide the Orange with some quality spot starts, but he only won one game as a starter during his tenure at SU and opposing teams were definitely breathing a sigh of relief that Mahoney was under center as opposed to Dungey.

Star of the Group: Eric Dungey

Dungey has gone from a guy with minimal Power Five interest to one of the better quarterbacks in the country. He’s a perfect fit for the offense that Babers runs with his ability to sling it and also use his legs. Dungey’s never had a winning season. He was seemingly on track to bring the Orange at least a .500 year last season before he went down with a foot injury. But the way he carries himself wouldn’t make you think he’s not a winner. Dungey’s a gamer and one of the toughest players on the team and genuinely isn’t afraid of any opposing player or team, a trait that will serve him and SU well in 2018. He has back-to-back years of 2,400 yards or better. If he can stay healthy, that will easily turn into 3,500.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL '18: 6 players starring for losing teams (ap; Russo)

Football being, in many ways, the ultimate team game can make it difficult for good players to shine when the players around them are ... not so good.

Stars toiling on losing teams rarely get much recognition. They almost never win the big awards or get selected to the All-America teams. Time to give some love to those overlooked players whose teams did not reach the postseason last year and might have a hard time climbing back into it in 2018.

Marquise Copeland, DT, Cincinnati

The Bearcats are in the second year of a rebuild under coach Luke Fickell, who brought in the top-ranked recruiting class in the American Athletic Conference this year. Copeland was one of the few real keepers Fickell inherited and probably the team’s best player last year. The senior had 63 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 2017. Undersized at 6-foot-2 and 282 pounds, Copeland could develop into an NFL draft pick.

Eric Dungey, QB, Syracuse

Dungey has been starting for the Orange since his freshman season. The problem is he has not been finishing the seasons healthy. When healthy, Dungey is a two-way threat with athleticism and size (6-4, 228) that could draw NFL attention. He enters 2018 as the only active quarterback in FBS with at least 6,000 yards passing and 1,000 yards rushing. The Orange have not been bowl-eligible since 2013. A full season for Dungey is a must for Syracuse to have any chance to get back, but just in case, best catch him in the regular season.

Joe Dineen, LB, Kansas

The Syracuse football team is looking to pint-sized receiver Sean Riley to help fill a huge void on offense this fall.

ACC Football: Predicting the Biggest Upsets in 2018 (athlonsports.com; Kinne)

They’re coming. Somewhere, at some time, an unheralded team will rise up and knock off a more glorified opponent. It happens every year and the ACC is certainly not immune to these upsets.

Last year’s big stunner came in October on Friday the 13th when Syracuse took down No. 2 Clemson at the Carrier Dome. Remarkably, that would be the last win of the year for the Orange.

Because they come out of nowhere, it is very difficult to predict when a higher ranked team will fall. But here is a list of 10 games involving ACC teams where an upset could be in play this fall.
...
6. Pittsburgh over UCF, Sept. 29
The Panthers have pulled off big upsets the past two seasons, beating Clemson in Death Valley in 2016 and knocking off then-unbeaten Miami at home last November. A victory over the Knights may not be of the same magnitude, but it would be noteworthy, especially if UCF comes in riding a 17-game winning streak.

5. Syracuse over Notre Dame, Nov. 17
Syracuse has pulled off its own huge upsets in each of the past two seasons. The aforementioned win over Clemson was preceded by a victory against No. 17 Virginia Tech in 2016. For the Irish, the game at Yankee Stadium is sandwiched between contests against Florida State and USC.

4. Texas A&M over Clemson, Sept. 8
Clemson is loaded and will be facing an Aggies squad with a new head coach. But Jimbo Fisher knows a thing or two about the Clemson personnel and the 12th Man will be jumping when the Tigers come to Kyle Field.

ACC Football Rx: ACCN Carriage, Revenue Updates - 8/14/18 (accfootballrx.com; HM)

How is the selling of the ACC Network coming along? According to Awful Announcing, "ESPN [already] has agreements with Hulu, PlayStation Vue, DirecTV Now, Sling TV, and YouTube TV to carry its programming - which presumably includes the ACC Network" (and since Disney owns 30% of Hulu, that one's a little more than mere assumption). [SOURCE]

"These agreements help ESPN build a case for the ACC Network to be carried by cable distributors." Those who refuse could lose even more subscribers who want to watch ACC sports and could switch to one of those streaming services if it’s not available...

Of course, Northeast cable giant Altice has already signed up for the ACCN. Before the ACC Network’s 2019 launch, ESPN will have new affiliate deals with three cable providers: Verizon Fios (end of 2018), Charter (mid 2019), and AT&T(late 2019).

Still to be determined: what rate subscribers will be charged for the ACC Network. Currently, ESPN charges subscribers a reported $0.72 / month for the SEC Network and $0.43 / month for the Big Ten Network, per subscriber.

From Awful Announcing: ACC Network, ESPN still targeting 2019 launch with digital distributors lined up
ESPN and ACC executives tout the conference’s recent successes — notably Clemson winning college football’s national championship and North Carolina winning the national title in college basketball — to cable providers, along with a national footprint that extends from New England to southern Florida, while reaching into New York, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Kentucky. That covers more than 40% of U.S. households... A successful launch of the network could bring up to $10 million to each member school and provide nine-figure profits to ESPN.

If we tally up the subscribers* we think are already in the bag...

Riley reminds me of Van Chew and didn't Van Chew make a big stride forward in his junior year? I think Babers system will help him get more production and somebody to stretch the field and catch the ball is needed.
