Welcome to National Bao Day!

Ancient Chinese gastronomic delicacies often cause oohs and ahhs on food holidays. On August 22, National Bao Day guarantees your taste buds will be shouting “Wow!”

At first one might consider it to be just a simple steamed bun. Dumplings aside, this is the flavorful Chinese dough used to make bāozi, or bao and is stuffed with savory meats or sweets. More than a side dish, bao is a type of sandwich which has been gaining popularity in the United States.

There are excellent reasons, too! Created as an elegant package, bao fits in the palm of the hand making it portable. Bao satisfies with all our favorite flavors. From spicy to sweet, BBQ and Thai, this little sandwich covers breakfast, lunch, supper and dessert. Still hungry? They’re great snacks and perfect for sharing, too.

Syracuse football coach Dino Babers knows his starting QB, but won't name him (PS; Bailey)

Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers has decided on a Week 1 starting quarterback 10 days before his team kicks off at Western Michigan.

However, the third-year head coach isn't ready to make that information public.

Babers addressed the competition between senior Eric Dungey and redshirt freshman Tommy DeVito briefly on Tuesday, saying that the battle will continue into the year and that he's excited to see both signal-callers in live action.

Will both play in Kalamazoo?

"It all depends on how the score goes," Babers said.

If it's close?

"I'm not sure."

Babers' approach marks the first campaign in five years in which SU's Week 1 starting quarterback could be uncertain until kickoff. In 2013, then-head coach Scott Shafer chose Oklahoma transfer Drew Allen over Terrel Hunt before switching to Hunt early in the season.

Syracuse Football Position Preview 2018: Linebackers – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)

This year’s SU Football team has plenty in common with last year’s squad: head coach Dino Babers, starting quarterback Eric Dungey and starting running backs Dontae Strickland and Moe Neal. However, this year’s group of linebackers couldn’t be more different. The Orange lost defensive leaders Zaire Franklin and Paris Bennett, two players who showcased incredible lateral speed throughout the year. With the heart of the 2017 team’s defense fighting for their jobs at the next level, SU has a huge question mark on its hands defensively.

The Squad:

From Syracuse Football’s 2018 Media Guide

Star of the Group: N/A

We haven’t seen enough of any of these players to even come close to declaring them a “star.” With no returning starters, there really isn’t anything to talk about here.

Something to Prove: Everyone

On the other hand, there’s plenty to talk about here. To put it simply: there is no one that plays linebacker that doesn’t have something to prove. The guy that we’ve seen the most promise from is Ryan Guthrie. At 6-foot-2, 224 pounds, Guthrie has the size and strength to deal with opposing offensive lineman in the run game. Against Pittsburg last year, Guthrie put together a solid performance which included a number of heavy hits. Even with that, we’re not sure if he can repeat that over the course of a full season. While the public may not know much about this group, current SU players like star lineman Chris Slayton have been quick to praise the bunch. Slayton said he’s watched these players work for the past several years and knows exactly what they bring to the table. Meanwhile, the rest of us just have to wait and see.

Here's why Boston College football is the ACC team you need to watch in 2018 (cbssports.com; Patterson)

While Clemson reigns atop the ACC and Miami starts to get comfortable in its role as the Tigers' toughest competition for a College Football Playoff spot, the rest of the pecking order is totally up for grabs among the other dozen teams in the league.

So while Louisville looks to replace quarterback Lamar Jackson, NC Statehas to reload its star-studded defensive line and Florida State gets settled into the Willie Taggart era, the team from the ACC Atlantic that is primed to take a big step forward in 2018 is Boston College.

A superstar in the backfield

The conversation starts with star running back AJ Dillon, who is coming off a 1,500-yard freshman campaign where he really didn't take over the starting job until mid-October. The ACC Rookie of the Year and freshman All-American has a fully filled-out frame at 6-feet, 240 pounds and a bruising, downhill rushing style punishes defenders over the course of four quarters. Dillon will be running behind an offensive line that returns all five starters from a year ago, making a 2,000-yard season (like Andre Williams had with the Eagles in 2013) seem more probable than possible.

How do things shape up around the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2018? Here's a quick look:

TEAM TO BEAT

This won't surprise anyone who has paid attention to college football the past few years, but ... it's Clemson. Again. And there's reason to believe the Tigers will be better than they were a year ago, when they won the ACC and reached the College Football Playoff. The defensive line has potential to be one of the best position groups in college football history.

ASCENDING

In A.J. Dillon, Boston College possesses one of the stars in the league, and his presence gives the Eagles a decisive, tough runner who amassed 1,589 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. Now a sophomore, and part of a team with a solid defense, Dillon can help BC climb up the Atlantic Division standings. In the Coastal, Duke was solid last season, going 7-6 overall but just 3-5 in the league. Quarterback Daniel Jones should help the Blue Devils improve on that conference record.

DESCENDING

NC State put together a strong 2017, winning nine games and finishing in the top 25. The Wolfpack topped FSU and Louisville to get to 6-1 before fading. A lot of the talent from that team is now gone, and it's hard to imagine another 6-2 league record. North Carolina can't get much worse than last year's 3-9 squad, but they just might. That would be quite the fall for a program that was in the ACC title game in 2015.

WILDCARD - ATLANTIC

Life without Lamar Jackson (and Jaire Alexander and Stacy Thomas) will be tough in what looks like it could be a bridge season for Louisville before a potentially promising 2019 campaign.

Ogdensburg football to kick off season at Carrier Dome on Aug. 30 (odg.com)

The Ogdensburg Blue Devils football team is preparing for its season opener at the Syracuse University Carrier Dome.

Two years ago the team played for the New York State Class C Championship at the Central New York venue.

This season the Devils will look to start and finish their season in the Carrier Dome, according to local football officials.

On Aug. 30, the Blue Devils will open their season by facing Sauqoit Valley at 5 p.m. in the Carrier Dome as part of the High School Kickoff Classic.

Advance sale tickets can be obtained by calling 315-393-0900. All tickets must be purchased with cash and all sales are final.

Game day tickets at the Carrier Dome will cost $10 and all seats are general admission with access to the lower level.

The game is also expected to be streamed online and broadcast on local radio.

Want to watch SU sports this fall? Go to these 6 venues (DO; Wasilewski)

The start of a new school year means the start of Syracuse University Athletics events. Check out all the places to go to watch 11 of Syracuse’s athletic teams compete this year.

Carrier Dome

The Carrier Dome is one of SU’s iconic structures. Also known as the “Loud House,” the Dome opened in 1980. The windowless coliseum with a giant marshmallow-like roof can be seen from Interstate 81. The Dome houses five of SU’s 18 teams: football, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s lacrosse. The Carrier Dome can hold close to 50,000 people for football and more than 30,000 for basketball. The Dome is near the David B. Falk School of Sport and Human Dynamics and the Heroy Geology Building. Students with season tickets will enter through Gate E, the gate closest to the Quad, and walk halfway around the concourse to the student section.

Women’s Building

The Women’s Building is serving up entertainment throughout the fall as the women’s volleyball team takes to the court. On Comstock Avenue, it’s one of the only places those on Mount Olympus can quickly access without climbing or descending an inordinate number of stairs. It’s also a short walk from the Quad. Once inside, students can get a bird’s-eye view of volleyball matches from a balcony off the second floor or sit in bleachers alongside the court.

SU Soccer Stadium

For those looking for more soccer action after the World Cup, head to the SU Soccer Stadium. The men and women each compete on the pitch near Manley Field House. Students taking the bus from Main Campus will get off at the Manley Field House South stop and walk across the parking lot to the stadium next to Ensley Athletic Center.

8-Man high school football taking hold in CNY, across state with low player turnout (PS; Weidner)

It looks like eight-man football is here to stay in Central New York.

It's a trend being felt in a big way here and across other parts of New York State, as declining enrollments and low player turnouts are straining high school football rosters.

Revived last year by Section III as a way to keep struggling small-school teams on the football field, the smaller-side version of traditional 11-man football — popular in the state decades ago before the age of school consolidations — took root quickly.

In just one year, the number of schools playing the eight-man game has nearly doubled in Section III. And the concept is catching on in other parts of the state.

Last week, four teams asked Section III to drop 11-man football in favor of the eight-man version. With just two weeks until the start of the 2018 season, the requests set off a scramble to realign the Class D league and amend schedules that had been set some five months earlier.

"I think it's just the way high school football is going," said Weedsport coach Jon Sgarlata, whose program was one of the four that sent a late petition to play eight-man.

Opening Day of the fair is Governor's Day, and general admission is $1.

Not far from the Expo Center is the revamped Experience Stage, which opened last year but is coming into its own for 2018, thanks to the four shows scheduled every day at this West End venue.

If you have young children, you'll want to check out Sesame Street Live in the Art & Home Center's Empire Theater from Aug. 22 to 26. Admission to the show is $5.

TODAY'S CONCERTS:

>> DJ Joe Driscoll, 4 p.m. at Experience Stage

>> Mir Fontane, 4 p.m. at Chevy Court

>> The Barndogs, 5:30 p.m. at Experience Stage
