Welcome to Knife Day!

Knife Day is the day to appreciate the knives that folk use on a daily basis. This day is a celebration of this marvellous tool that has been with humans since the dawn of time. The evolution of knives has been a remarkable feat – from knives made of bone, stone and flint, to modern creations using titanium, bronze, iron and steel. Nobody can deny the knife is one of man’s most useful tools – for cooking, eating, fishing, hunting, and not to forget the oh so handy Swiss Army knife. To make the most of Knife Day, why not test your knife chopping skills in the kitchen, or buy that knife set you’ve always wanted. Invite family and friends over to compare and swap knives, or get together to clean and sharpen your knives. Then there’s nothing like having a cake and enjoying a slice by the knife. And instead of wishing one another to have a nice day, why not just say: “Have a knife day!”

Cuse closes out training camp (spectrum; video; Callaway)

After three weeks, the SU football team wrapped up their final day of training camp on Thursday. Afterwards, Alton Robinson and Antwan Cordy spoke about how excited they are to turn their attention towards their first opponent.

Syracuse Football: Hard Knocks’ star Bob Wylie earned his stripes at SU (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Current Cleveland Browns Offensive Line coach Bob Wylie and current Hard Knocks’ star made his mark with the Syracuse football team back in the day.

Every year football fans gather around the television to watch HBO’s Hard Knocks. This year the Cleveland Browns were the team selected.

While initially on the surface, people questioned the choice, considering the team has one win in 32 attempts, it actually has been a pleasant surprise with a variety of personalities on the squad.

One of the brightest stars so far of the HBO’s Hard Knocks series is offensive line coach Bob Wylie. The 67-year old coach from West Warwick, Rhode Island was featured in the latest episode of the series.
He’s a colorful, creative, and entertaining voice that should sound familiar. Why you may ask? Because Wylie made his coaching bones in Syracuse! It’s true Wylie was the offensive line coach at Syracuse from 2005 through 2006.

After his short stint on the hill, Bob went north of the border to the CFL for several years before returning to the NFL in 2010. All-in-all, Bob has coached for nearly 40 years for 17 organizations.

Episode 79- Syracuse Football, Defense Preview! - Armchair All-Americans (armchairallamericans.com; video; Cuse Militia)

What’s up ‘Cuse Nation? In this show we give you our Syracuse football defense preview. Then, we discuss the stock of coach Dino Babers if he becomes successful with the Orange. Let’s face it, any team would be lucky to have him and they’d probably be able to pay more.

11. Duke Blue Devils (0-0)
This week: vs. Army
I personally watched the Army-Duke game last year and was one of the most fun games I’ve ever seen. Army had what seemed to be a 25 minute drive in the fourth quarter and Duke could not do anything about it. Northwestern and Baylor aren’t impossible out of conference opponents, but playing them on the road will be hard. Dave Cutcliffe is going to have to reach into his wizadry bag.

12. Virginia Cavaliers (0-0)
This week: vs. Richmond
The quest for six starts with the Spiders.
13. North Carolina Tar Heels (0-0)
This week: at California
The Tar Heels sure do know how to have a quiet offseason. From sneakergate, to Larry Fedora showing himself to be a crazy person and science dissenter, to the recent fall of Silent Sam. A 3-9 season last year has put Fedora on the hotseat this year and all those suspensions aren’t going to help matters.
14. Syracuse Orange (0-0)
This week: at Western Michigan
ROW THA...ah man, nevermind. Some might think this should be a layup for Cuse, but S&P+ projects the Orange to be at No. 71 and Western Michigan at No. 87. Dino Babers is going to need three wins against OOC opponents not named Notre Dame, because the ACC Atlantic schedule is not kind to Cuse.

Who's season does Pitt ruin this year? Penn State, UCF, Notre Dame, or Miami?

I love this question. Having Pitt is almost like having chicken pox - once you get Pitted, it won't happen again. Clemson is safe. So is Miami. Pitt has a history of beating the No. 2 team in the country (both Clemson in 2016 and Miami in 2017 were when Pitt inexplicably won), and so I'd have to go with the team most likely to be No. 2, right? I've already said it won't be Miami, even though they're the highest-ranked of the four (No. 8). Penn State is No. 10 and could get that high, but they play Pitt in Week 2 and that's not likely to happen unless like eight other teams lose. Pitt plays UCF in Week 5, but UCF is No. 21 and they could be 4-0 and have won all four games by 1,000 points and there's no way they even crack the top 10. So the answer is Notre Dame. Pitt will play Notre Dame when the Irish could very well be 6-0 with three wins over teams that are currently ranked. If there's any team that has a chance to be No. 2, it's the Irish. And they will have just beaten Stanford at home and Virginia Tech on the road, if it holds up. They'll be playing a Pitt team that will lull them to sleep and then BAM! There it is. A good football team that Notre Dame won't have seen on tape. The Irish won't know what hit them.

NC State quarterback Ryan Finley says the Wolfpack isn't taking James Madison lightly as he discusses the Pack beginning its game-planning for its Sept. 1 season opener.

ACC Football Rx: 2018 GameDay Guesses (accfootballrx.com; HM)

...
Here are my guesses, along with 247Sports' picks from back in May...

WEEK 1 of 14
247Sports Guess (May): WASHINGTON vs. AUBURN
Actual: MICHIGAN at NOTRE DAME
Week 1... might be the only opportunity all season at Notre Dame Stadium. GameDay hasn't been to South Bend since 2012 and gets a chance to hype Shea Patterson's debut with the Wolverines in a pivotal game for Jim Harbaugh.

WEEK 2 of 14
247Sports Guess: CLEMSON at TEXAS A&M, SEPT. 8
GameDay has visited College Station 12 times in its history, third-most in the SEC, but hasn't been to Kyle Field since October 2016. That should change in Week 2 for the Dabo Swinney vs. Jimbo Fisher showdown, which is sure to get primetime billing in front of a sellout crowd. It's not an easy game for the defending ACC champs on the road in a hostile environment, but that loaded defensive front for the Tigers should be in control at the line of scrimmage.
My Guess: PROBABLY CLEMSON at TEXAS AM, but it could be PENN STATE at PITT
Why? It's the ABC Primetime game, and it's the last scheduled visit to Pittsburgh (and thus an ESPN-controlled game) for the Nittany Lions.

WEEK 3 of 14
247Sports Guess: OHIO STATE vs. TCU (ARLINGTON, TEXAS), SEPT. 15
My Guess: SAME (I wouldn't expect them to hype the USC/Texas game on Fox!)

ACC Football Rx: Another ACCN revenue projection estimate (accfootballrx.com; HM)

Here's another way to estimate the ACC Network revenue which was recommended to me by JRSEC on CSNBBS. The idea is to assume (1) that ESPN uses its leverage to get the ACCN and SECN both into every ACC and SEC footprint market; (2) that the subscription rates are about 80% of all homes, with an average of 4 people per household; (3) that each league will get $1.25 in-state and $0.25 out of state subscription rates; (4) ESPN gets half of the revenue in each case, with the remainder being split 14 ways in the case of the SEC and 15 ways in the case of the ACC.

The ACC won't match the SEC in terms of revenue, but the larger population numbers will make it closer than you might first think. I'm thinking if all goes well* the ACC can pull within $2.2 million per team in terms of conference network revenue. That's probably a best-case scenario, however.

Still, an extra $9.6 million per year per ACC team would safely vault the league into undisputed third place in terms of television revenue... and we didn't bother to estimate how many subscribers there would be outside of the conference footprints (and in the case of the SEC we know that's probably half of the total subscriptions!) Maybe tack on another 32.5 million more subscribers each, an extra $3.5 million per SEC team and another $3.3 million per ACC team.

ACCN.png

Final grand totals: SEC $15.3 million per team; ACC $12.9 million per team.

Sports analytics major to debut

Michael Veley of Syracuse University discusses a new sports analytics major at the school, hoping to keep up with current trends in sports management.

Excellent find from wralsportsfan.com; who writes that accfootballrx mess, though? Doesn't everybody know that the ACC will NEVER come close to making as much money as the SEC? Heresy!!!

My remembrance of Wylie was his best attributes were he looked like Andy Reid and always collected a big paycheck

Right. And who is this JRSEC guy that this heretic is basing this data on?!?

Should be 0.05 rate for out-of-state and 0.50 for in-state rate at best. We all know ESPN doesn't know how to make money. Just look at how they have to include ESPN+ with the new Disney streaming services to prop that up. :p

Cheers,
Neil
