Welcome to National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day!

National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day celebrates doughnuts of the cream-filled variety. Doughnuts, or "donuts" as they also are known, are deep-fried yeast pastries. The first doughnuts in America in fact were little "nuts" of dough, and they were brought to New England by the Pilgrims, who had learned to make them while they were in Holland from 1607-1620. The first mention of doughnuts in print was in Washington Irving's 1809 book History of New York, which talks about Dutch settlers to New Amsterdam in the 17th century. By the middle of the 19th century, doughnuts with a punched out center became the norm, and doughnut corers were even being sold by mail order catalog! By the 20th century, many variations of doughnuts became popular, including the cream-filled doughnut. Sometimes these doughnuts are known as a "cream doughnut" or "cream stick", and they can be filled with a number of different fillings such as vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, raspberry, and lemon. One of the most popular cream-filled doughnuts is the Boston cream doughnut, which has chocolate frosting and a vanilla cream filling. It is a miniaturized doughnut version of the Boston cream pie, and in 2003 it was made the official doughnut of Massachusetts.

FSU vs. Syracuse: Three matchups to watch (247sports.com; Sonnone)

We're only two games into the season, but Florida State already has a pivotal road game at Syracuse coming up.

The Seminoles (1-1, 0-1 ACC) are still trying to establish a positive identity under coach Willie Taggart, on both sides of the ball. The Orange (2-0) are certainly beatable, but they have enough firepower on offense to move the ball against a defense that's had issues preventing chunk play this year, and thus put pressure on FSU's struggling offense.

Noles247.com takes a look at three matchups that could define whether FSU gets a much-needed win against Syracuse in Saturday's noon contest...

FSU linebackers vs. QB Eric Dungey in the option game

Syracuse leans heavily on zone read and RPO looks on offense. And it has a talented, tough, experienced quarterback to run the system.

Senior Eric Dungey leads Syracuse in passing yards (402) and rushing yards (244), and has eight total touchdowns through two games. He doesn’t have elite arm talent, but can push the ball downfield. But perhaps his top attribute is his mobility. Dungey can scramble and he can effectively carry out read-options.

As you’ll see below, Dungey has the athleticism to find creases in a defense and out-maneuver would-be tacklers. Syracuse ran a draw on 3rd-and-long, and Dungey was 1. Poised/Patient and 2. Aware of where he needed to get for a first down.

Syracuse.com’s Nate Mink and Brent Axe discuss the latest topics around the Syracuse University Football team including a preview of the Orange’s upcoming matchup with the Florida State Seminoles.

Eric Dungey, the motor that makes Syracuse go, has FSU’s focus (247sports.com; Nee)

Florida State's opponent on Saturday afternoon, Syracuse, is averaging 58.5 points and 508 offensive yards per game through their first two outings - which came against lower-level schools. The high tempo offensive attack, which is averaging 84 plays per game in their first two outings, has FSU's full attention.

"Talented football team. Coach Babers has done a great job getting them coached the way they want," FSU head coach Willie Taggart said. "Offensively they have a quarterback that's very talented in Eric Dungey, been there a while. Had an opportunity to play against him when I was at South Florida and an up-tempo offense. They really go fast. And I know this season they've done a good job of being pretty balanced and running and throwing the ball and having some skilled guys out there.

"So another challenge for our defense. And we've got to be on our A game and do a great job of tackling and a great job of covering and playing smart football," Taggart added.

The motor in the Syracuse offense is Dungey.

“Tough, aggressive, confident football player. He makes them go, obviously," FSU defensive coordinator Barnett said. "Very, very good football player and it’s going to be a challenge.”

On the season, Dungey is 30-for-49 for 402 passing yards, seven passing touchdowns and one interception. He also has 26 rushes for 244 rushing yards, 9.4 yards per rush, and a touchdown.

He ranks third in the FBS in career total offensive yards per game, averaging 298.5 over his time with the Orange. He is the only active FBS quarterback with over 6,000 career passing yards and 1,000 career rushing yards.

Why a Win Over Florida State Would Be Crucial for SU – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Singer)

In sports, a team can only take care of what it has in front of it. That is exactly what Syracuse has done through two games, but its schedule heats up quickly, and games will get considerably tougher. How the Orange fairs against its tougher opponents is crucial with the success of this season surmising on reaching a bowl game. In front of SU this week is the Florida State Seminoles, who squeaked by the Orange last year, and now may be playing in what could ultimately be one of Syracuse’s most pivotal games all season.

Here is a look at SU’s remaining schedule:

Vs. Florida State
Vs. Connecticut
@ Clemson
@ Pittsburgh
Vs. North Carolina
Vs. NC State
@ Wake Forest
Vs. Louisville
Vs. Notre Dame*
@ Boston College

* = neutral location

It’s still early, but a win over FSU may work wonders for the Orange later on. SU has ten games left. Seven of them are against teams that posted winning records last season. Five of those seven beat the Orange last year, and three of those five have already started 2-0. To make matters worse, neither Clemson nor Notre Dame is a part of those three, but both have still started 2-0 as well. Like last year, Syracuse’s schedule is no cakewalk, but at the end of the day, expectations are higher. If Dino Babers wants to get over that dreaded 4-win mark and perhaps reach a bowl game, a victory on Saturday could be tremendous.

FSU Football 2018 Game Preview and Pick: at Syracuse (chopchat.com; Parker)

Here’s a preview of FSU football and their next battle during the 2018 college football season against Syracuse.

If you were waiting for the Willie Taggart era to being with fireworks and excitement for the FSU football team…well, there are still 10 games to go in the season, so the rocky road still has plenty of miles on it. However, the first two games of the season have been far from what those in garnet and gold ever thought would have taken place.

After laying an egg in the opener against Virginia Tech, the Noles decided to make things even more interesting (or embarrassing depending on who you talk to) when they waited until the final five minutes of last week’s game against FCS foe Samford before taking the lead and actually deciding they wanted to win the game.

Now, FSU football finds themselves hitting the road for the first time this season against a Syracuse team who has one of the best quarterbacks in all of college football – but also a defense that even the Noles this season might be able to score points against this week. Here’s our preview of this week’s game between the Seminoles and the Orange.

Last Time FSU Football Took The Field

You could tell that last week’s game for the Seminoles was going to be an interesting one considering that it started almost 90 minutes late due to a weather delay in the area that kept the players off the field before they could even start warming up and get things started.

Once the Seminoles took the field, it was almost as if Taggart’s team had decided to leave their talent inside the locker room at Doak Campbell Stadium as the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 13-0 lead and things were getting dicey in Tallahassee. FSU football cut the deficit to two points with Deondre Francois coming up with three touchdowns – including two passing to Tamorrion Terry – before the half.

With just five minutes to go in the game and trailing by five points, D12 would find Tre’ McKitty for the game winning score and Levonta Taylor would cement the win with a pick six – ironic since the secondary for the Seminoles had four interceptions in the game, but also gave up 475 yards passing to Samford’s Devlin Hodges to make him look like a star studded quarterback who should be playing FBS football.

Syracuse Football: Florida State game isn’t a skin game but still important (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Our Paul A. Esden Sr. suggests a win over Florida State wouldn’t be a skin, but it would be an important conquest for the Syracuse football squad.

The third game of the 2018 Syracuse Orange Campaign is against the Florida State Seminoles. Now as I told you in the ‘Quest for 6’ series this is one of the games that got away from us last year, primarily by dubious decisions by our coaching staff.

Speaking of last year let us break down the numbers:

2017 Rankings Comparison
Syracuse Florida State
Total Offense 23rd 100th
Rushing 70th 76th
Passing 18th 89th
Total Defense 105th 18th
Rushing 98th 31rd
Passing 97th 29th

Based on last year’s statistics this is going to be Strength on Strength drill. The OITNF versus one of the best defenses in the country last year.

Which is exactly how the game went last year with Eric Dungey our Heisman hopeful putting the Orange team on his back with around 300 yards passing and over one hundred yards rushing before falling short on their comeback bid losing by a field goal.

As we all know we are one third of the way to the ‘Quest for 6’ coming into this game at 2-0 but not really knowing what makes this Orange team tick. They have done what they should have done up to this point but now it is time to put on our big boy pants as we kick off our ACC docket.

Boston College vs. Wake Forest Football Highlights (2018)

Boston College vs. Wake Forest: Eagles quarterback Anthony Brown tossed a career-high 5 touchdown passes and AJ Dillon rushed for 185 yards in a 41-34 BC win over Wake Forest Thursday night. Both Matt Colburn II and Cade Carney rushed for more than 100 yards for the Deacs in the loss. The game was pushed up two hours due to the oncoming Hurricane Florence but was played in relatively good weather.

To what extent do you think the hurricane-related cancellations will increase the public awareness of the remaining games - specifically, FSU at Syracuse?

If SU wins I hope everybody is watching. If they lose I hope they were not. The hurricane should raise the ratings imo for games that are played, love to have SU put on a good show for that.

What weekend did VT schedule their doubleheader for the make up?
