Welcome to National Voter Registration Day!
National Voter Registration Day, which was started in 2012, is a holiday celebrating democracy in the United States, in which the goal is to make sure everyone has the opportunity to vote. Awareness is raised so that tens of thousands of people register to vote who may not be reached otherwise. Volunteers work on the ground and with technology and media to make sure this happens. The day is endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State and State Election Directors.
National Voter Registration Day is being observed today! It has been observed the fourth Tuesday in September since 2012.

Dino Babers knows Clemson, its fans are out for payback vs. Syracuse football (PS; Mink)
No need to remind Dino Babers of the hornets' nest he and his team are walking into Saturday afternoon at Clemson.
The Tigers and their fans will be on high alert and out for payback against a Syracuse football program that stunned them in the regular season last Oct. 13 in a historic, 27-24 upset.
Babers is taking an older, experienced, stronger and deeper team with him to Memorial Stadium than the one that left with a 54-0 shellacking two years ago.
It may not matter against a defensive line featuring four future high NFL Draft picks and a roster built to win a national title this season.
"It's going to be extremely loud," Babers said Monday during his weekly press conference, "and that's how it's supposed to be in a big game when you're going into somebody's else place."
"We'll get the full effect," the third-year coach said later, "of what that fan base can do."

Dino Babers has never experienced this before in seven seasons as a head coach — his Syracuse Orange are undefeated after four games and received votes this week in the AP Top 25.
That’s heady territory for a vagabond coach who’s toiled for more than three decades at 14 different schools.
“We’re excited for that, and it helps us with our goals that we’re trying to achieve this season,” Babers said. “But just like I told the football team, we’re going to take that 4-0 check and we’re not going to cash it. We’re going to put it in the bank and we’ve got to start again.
“If we keep having that attitude, when it’s all said and done maybe we’ll have enough saved up in the piggy bank to go buy something at the end of the season that we’d like.”
That would be a bowl game, something that’s eluded the program through four straight losing seasons.
Syracuse matched its win total for each of the previous three seasons with a 51-21 victory over Connecticut on Saturday, and the Orange’s up-tempo offense is humming, averaging almost 50 points.
Syracuse’s other wins have come against Western Michigan (55-42), Wagner (62-10) and Florida State (30-7), which has top talent but is struggling under a first-year coach. WMU has since lost 49-3 to No. 14 Michigan. Wagner has been hammered by Montana State (47-24) and Sacred Heart (41-14) while the Seminoles are back at .500 after beating Northern Illinois.

Who played the biggest part in the Syracuse football team getting a win over UConn on Saturday and improving their 2018 record to 4-0?
The Syracuse football team put a beat down on the UConn Huskies on Saturday, and the Orange didn’t even play all that well. The Syracuse defense looked shaky at times, including when they gave up a 75-yard run to UConn quarterback David Pindell.
The Orange offense scored the most nonchalant 51 points I’ve ever seen them score. Syracuse was essentially running two plays in the first half. The quick bubble screen to their playmakers on the outside, and run plays up the middle.
They generated 31 points by just running those two plays and were gaining chunk yards against the inexperienced Huskies defense.
The Orange slot receivers were incredibly effective on the day as Sean Riley and Nykeim Johnson both had big games.
On a day where Syracuse honored one of the schools all-time great running backs in Joe Morris, the Orange run game did their job against UConn, churning out 341 total yards.
The Syracuse defense was much more concerning than the offense. Statistically, the Huskies have the worst defense in college football, but their offense is solid.

Syracuse is off to their best start since 1991. Head Coach Dino Babers has this team believing and quarterback Eric Dungey has been on fire with nine passing touchdowns, four rushing touchdowns, and just one interception. Standing in their path of 5-0 is #3 Clemson, a team they upset at the Dome last year. Let’s quickly remember the good times.
So what does Clemson do? They decide it’s time to unleash their monster Trevor Lawrence. Annnnnnd….poof! Just like that there goes Syracuse’s chances of winning on Saturday and continuing their undefeated season.
Going into Death Valley and winning is one of the more difficult tasks out there in college football. Doing it against Trevor Lawrence is next to impossible. The way Clemson games have typically gone this year is Kelly Bryant starts the game and struggles to move the offense. True freshman phenom God-child Trevor Lawrence then enters the game and lights the world on fire. Look what he did to Georgia Tech this weekend.

Basketball powers off to good starts in football | Lunch Break (kusports.co; Keegan)
Carrying the label “basketball school” doesn’t make recruiting any easier for football coaches, but multiple basketball powerhouses, including a pair ranked in the top 25, are showing it is possible to overcome the label.
No. 17 Kentucky (4-0): Mark Stoops has taken the slow, steady approach to building a program, exercising the discipline to avoid quick fixes in recruiting, and it’s paying off in a big way in his sixth season on the job.
The Wildcats hammered visiting No. 14 Mississippi State, 28-7, Saturday to move into the top 25 for the first time since 2007. Kentucky won at Florida, 27-16, in the second week of the season.
Stoops went to a bowl game for the first time in 2016, ending the school’s five-year drought, and is primed to take the Wildcats to a third consecutive bowl game.
If Stoops can get to nine victories this season it will be just the second time in school history for Kentucky, which first won nine in 1949 under Bear Bryant.
No. 22 Duke (4-0): The Blue Devils drubbed Army by 20 points and won consecutive road games vs. Northwestern, 21-7, and Baylor, 40-27.
David Cutcliffe, in his 11th season in Durham, ended an 18-year bowl drought in his fifth season on the job and will take the Blue Devils to their sixth bowl game in 18 seasons. He has executed a remarkable turnaround of the Duke program.

Clemson’s defense needs no motivation against Syracuse (theclemsoninside.,com; Oliver)
Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables doesn’t need to say anything to motivate his defense heading into Saturday’s game vs. Syracuse at Death Valley.
All Venables has to do is show his defense the tape of Clemson’s game against Syracuse at the Carrier Dome last October, when the Orange racked up 440 yards, 28 first downs and six plays of 20 yards or more in their upset 27-24 victory.
Syracuse’s offense began the game with a 10-play, 72-yard drive for a touchdown, and the Orange never trailed on their way to a shocking win.
Reflecting on the poor defensive performance, Venables said it started with missed assignments and a failure to execute simple fundamentals.
“To me, it starts with they run their base play. We’ve got three runs on the first drive that we don’t fit right that are basic and fundamental to what we do, and we were lined up,” Venables said. “We had plenty of time. We were lined up with our hand in the dirt, with our eyes on our key, and we don’t fit the run right – a power, a split-flow play and a zone, and they go for 8 (yards) and 8 and 7. You can’t play defense – nothing is good – if you don’t do those basic fundamental things.

ACC Football Rx: 2018 Upset Losses as of 9/25/18 (accfootballrx.com; HM)
A lot of people seem to be down on ACC football this season. The feeling is that a lot of ACC teams have suffered upset losses - but is that really true? For example, Florida State has lost 2 games - both to fellow ACC teams, one on the road. Is that REALLY any more than a mild upset at most?
So how many upsets have there really been? To FCS teams - zero. To G5 teams - only 3:
N Carolina @ E Carolina
Ga Tech @ USF
Va Tech @ ODU
Do you notice what all 3 of these losses have in common? The ACC team is on the wrong side of the "@" symbol! Yes, the upset losses were all road games at the G5 stadium...
How does that compare to other power conferences?
Big XII
Nicholls (FCS) @ Kansas
Big Ten
E Michigan @ Purdue
Akron @ Northwestern
USF @ Illinois
Troy @ Nebraska
Temple @ Maryland
BYU @ Wisconsin
Buffalo @ Rutgers
Pac-12
BYU @ Arizona
Cincinnati @ UCLA
California @ BYU
Arizona @ Houston
Fresno St @ UCLA
Oregon St @ Nevada
Arizona St @ San Diego St

Yeah, Fedora is already on the hot seat (one P5 win per year won't cut it, even in Chapel Hill), but that game Saturday probably turned up the heat on Narduzzi at Pitt also.
From USA Today: Virginia Tech quarterback Josh Jackson out indefinitely due to broken fibulaVirginia Tech quarterback Josh Jackson has a broken left fibula and will have surgery... Tuesday, but [it's unknown] how long Jackson will be sidelined.
Also from USA Today: Clemson turns to freshman Trevor Lawrence as starting quarterback...an ineffective performance by Bryant in Saturday’s win at Georgia Tech and a four-touchdown performance by Lawrence precipitated a change in the depth chart.
What if UCF goes undefeated and wins the American Athletic Conference AGAIN? That would mean that over a 2-year span they would've gone 26-0 with wins over Auburn (2017-19 Peach Bowl) and Pitt (2018 regular season). Of course, they would've also had 2 games canceled by hurricanes - one per season.
Under those circumstances, would the Knights get into the playoffs? What if the CFP Selection Committee only has 3 P5 champs worthy of selection - would they dare pick a 2nd SEC team over UCF again? (Let's assume that 2nd SEC team is NOT named Alabama!) The SEC website SaturdayDownSouth is in a tizzy over the possibility [LINK]!

Joanie Mahoney's SUNY job: Brand new, pay undetermined, no board approval needed (PS; Weiner)
Joanie Mahoney's post with the State University of New York is a newly created position that comes without a formal job description, predetermined salary or requirement for approval by the SUNY Board of Trustees, SUNY officials said Monday.
Mahoney announced Monday that she will step down after 11 years as Onondaga County executive to become the chief operating officer of the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse.
She will also serve as a special adviser at SUNY Upstate Medical University and report to Robert Megna, COO of the statewide SUNY system.
Mahoney's job at SUNY-ESF is a new position that SUNY Chancellor Kristina Johnson first discussed in June, according to David Amberg, the college's interim president. Mahoney will report to Amberg.
"When Chancellor Johnson asked me in June to take on the role of ESF interim president, she made it clear that some highly qualified person would join the college as COO," Amberg wrote Monday in a note to faculty, students and alumni. "I'm delighted that that person will be Joanie."
Amberg said Mahoney's "experience as Onondaga County executive and her financial experience will be particularly helpful as we work through ESF's financial challenges."
