Welcome to World Egg Day!

World Egg Day is celebrated every year on the second Friday in October and was first celebrated in 1996. Since then, people around the world have continued to celebrate eggs as an excellent, affordable source of high quality protein and their vital role in feeding people around the world.

Every day, egg farmers across the globe join together in their commitment to provide high-quality eggs to help feed the world’s hungry. Here at home, America’s egg farmers continue to balance their operations with firm commitments to the people they feed, the animals they care for and the environment we all share.

Syracuse football predictions: Revised look at Orange heading into 2nd half (PS; Staff)

The Syracuse football team has hit the midpoint of the season at 4-2 (1-2 ACC).
With the bye week here, it's a good time to take a look back at our preseason predictions and make some revisions heading into the second half.

THE PANEL
  • Brent Axe, Video and Audio Engagement
  • Stephen Bailey, SU Football Reporter
  • Nate Mink, SU Football Reporter
  • Jason Murray, Sports Manager
BRENT AXE
Preseason prediction: 6-6
Revised prediction: 7-5

Syracuse has flashed the potential that it is a better team than most of us thought before the season began, but it has to plug the leak in the run defense for that to come to fruition. Winning four of the last six isn't unreasonable, but I'll say the Orange wins three (UNC, Wake Forest, Louisville) and finish 7-5.

STEPHEN BAILEY
Preseason prediction: 6-6
Revised prediction: 7-5

If you'd asked me before the Pittsburgh game, I probably would have written in eight or nine wins. But I'm not sold on the fact that the last two losses didn't magnify larger problems on both sides of the ball.

Syracuse's linebackers, and to a lesser extent its safeties, must improve at stopping the run. In fact, unless it gets better soon, it will probably only get worse as the seldom-replaced starters wear down.

And on the other side of the ball, Eric Dungey and his receivers need to take better advantage of 1-on-1 matchups. Otherwise, opponents will be able to leave an extra defender in the box to spy the mobile quarterback consistently.

How a few kickboxing lessons redefined Kendall Coleman’s pass rush (DO; Schafer)

Kendall Coleman’s parents spend their Sundays rewatching the Syracuse game from the day before. Coleman’s mother, Nikki, noticed her son is quicker off the line this year. With his body lower to the ground, he bends smoother toward the quarterback. He’s surgical with his strikes.

After 1.5 sacks in his first 20 games at Syracuse, Coleman focused on his pass rush this offseason. He increased his flexibility by rehabbing an injured shoulder, studied offensive tackles and focused on the minute details of rushing the quarterback. But he didn’t know how those things connected. Everything came together 643 miles from the SU campus during a family bonding session, where Nikki introduced her 6-foot-3, 266-pound pass rusher to kickboxing.

“Kendall is a guy that studies a lot,” Nikki said. “And I think going to that class with him, showing him some movements and how to move his body and his hands, I think that sticks with him.”

Can You Solve This Syracuse Football Bye Week Math Equation? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Singer)

Well, the Orange is off this week, which means something must be done to keep everyone excited during the bye. With that said, what better way is there to do that than anotherSyracuse football equation? So, here’s a step-by-step problem that includes every opponent the Orange faces (or has already faced) this season:

Step 1 (Western Michigan): Start with the number 200, the amount of yards Eric Dungey ran for against the Broncos. Dungey almost doubled his career high in Syracuse’s 55-42 Week 1 win.

Step 2 (Wagner): DIVIDE by 10 for the amount of points the Seahawks tallied in SU’s 62-10 victory.

Step 3 (Florida State): Next, ADD 4. The Orange sacked Deondre Francois four times at the Carrier Dome on its way to a convincing 30-7 win over the Seminoles.

Step 4 (Connecticut): SUBTRACT 13 for Moe Neal’s 13 carries against the Huskies. Both figuratively and literally, Neal took his carries and ran with them. The Junior torched UConn for 116 yards on nearly nine yards per carry in Syracuse’s 51-21 win.

Step 5 (Clemson): MULTIPLY by 9, the number of Tigers running back Travis Etienne, who ran for a career-high 203 yards and three touchdowns against the Orange. Better yet, Etienne’s final carry was a game-winning touchdown with 41 seconds left, putting Clemson past Syracuse, 27-23.

The New York Jets were sole reason Zaire Franklin got drafted in 2018 (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Former Syracuse football star Zaire Franklin is in a perfect situation in the pros. You can thank the New York Jets for making that happen on draft day.

It was a nerve wracking couple of days for former Syracuse football linebacker Zaire Franklin. After putting in four wonderful years on the hill at Syracuse, Zaire had earned the opportunity to potentially be drafted into the National Football League.

The last Syracuse football player to be drafted was special teams ace Riley Dixonback in 2016 (seventh round, 228th overall).

Franklin had a terrific pro day back in the spring and over a dozen NFL teams showed up to see him work out. Two teams in particular spent a lot of time with Franklin: the New York Jets and the Indianapolis Colts.

Who would’ve thought that these two teams would be instrumental in Zaire Franklin being drafted in April.

Let’s fast forward to day three of the 2018 NFL Draft, the Colts had made their last draft selection (seventh round, pick 221st overall, Matthew Adams a linebacker out of Houston). The Colts were packing up their offices ready to go meet with the media to talk about their day three haul and then the phone rang.

NCAA Football 12 Syracuse Orange Overall Player Ratings

Is Eric Dungey actually Russell Westbrook? (soundcloud.clom; podcast; the Frat)

Today Matt "the Frat" Quesada (College football expert) and I go over the loss to Pitt. How Pitt brought back the wildcat. We do an outlook on college football as a whole. Talk about how Cuse fits into the ACC.

We do our normal minute on Brian Windhorst, and Andre Szmyt might be the best kicker in the country. Again it is the bye week so no interviews this week, but plenty of good stuff to come! If you dig what you hear go read some great content on the webpage TradeMarkPod.com where listening comes to life.

ACC Football Rx: Predictive PR - 10/11/18 (accfootballrx.com; HM)

Computer power ratings were created in the hopes of being able to predict the outcome of future games. The idea is that if we calculate the strength of the teams who played the teams that our favorite team has played, and so on, that eventually we'd have a pretty good idea of the relative strength of teams which have NOT played (yet).

With all that in mind, here are the power ratings of all FBS teams as of 10/11/18, with ACC-related teams highlighted...

ACC Football: Week 7 Staff Predictions (tarheelblog.com;Bondurant)

Weeks after Hurricane Florence submerged much of North Carolina in floodwater, the remnants of Hurricane Michael are presently dropping upwards of five inches of rain on the already overly water-logged state. It’s fitting, in a way, that Virginia Tech is set to be in Chapel Hill this weekend. The last time the Tar Heels and the Hokies met in Kenan Stadium was a disastrous outing in the middle of Hurricane Matthew.

In all seriousness, we hope that you and your family stay safe and dry during the storm. We know that no one needs the rain right now.

Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your position), the rain is supposed to move out of the area well in advance of Saturday’s prime time meeting under the lights in Kenan. Will the results go any better for UNC this time around? Ehhhhhhhh.

As always, we asked the staff to predict the outcomes of the ACC games on the schedule this week. Here’s what they came up with:

Issue during Wake Forest’s loss to Clemson was addressed in private conversation between Dave Clawson and ACC official (greensboro.com; O'Neill)

Before Coach Dave Clawson delivered harsh words about his Wake Forest football team after Saturday’s 63-3 loss to Clemson, he appeared to be delivering harsh words to referees near the Deacons’ sideline in the first half.

Asked to elaborate on what in particular was bothering him so much, Clawson declined to get specific during the ACC coaches’ teleconference this week — though he did say he talked with the ACC’s supervisor of football officials, Dennis Hennigan.

“It was an issue that I addressed with the supervisor of officials on Monday, and he agreed with my perspective on it,” Clawson said, “and there was a situation in the game that wasn’t handled the way it should have been.”

While Clawson declined to name the situation, it is presumed that the issue was Clemson’s band playing while the Deacons’ offense was trying to communicate before snaps. Several times on ESPN’s broadcast of the game, Clawson was shown yelling at officials, and a few of those times he was gesturing toward the area of the stands where Clemson’s band was performing.

Mendenhall stresses need for upgraded football facilities (godandriver.cmo; Counts)

Virginia football coach Bronco Mendenhall was blunt with reporters earlier this week when asked about the impact the Cavaliers’ athletic facilities have on recruiting.

“The easy answer is yes, certainly our facilities have cost us,” he said.
The Virginia athletic department will hold a meeting Friday night at Farmington Country Club to discuss fundraising efforts to build a new football operations center and a building for Olympic sports teams (soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, etc.).

Select donors and UVa supporters have been invited, according to a member of the athletic department, who also said Athletic Director Carla Williams will make another presentation to former UVa student-athletes on Saturday as part of the Virginia Athletic Foundation’s All-Sports Reunion Weekend.

On Monday, Mendenhall said it’s about more than sprucing up the look of Grounds. It’s about how the football program is perceived.

“More than anything else, to make a clear and simple statement that Virginia football matters,” he said. “It’s not an afterthought. It’s a priority and we intend to be excellent.”

Could FSU land Clemson’s Kelly Bryant? If not, one of these other ACC schools might (miamiherald.com; Renner)

Kelly Bryant is leaving the Clemson Tigers, but the quarterback might not be going far. The junior is beginning to take a look at other schools and a number of ACC schools are viewed as serious contenders to land Bryant, according to oddsmakers.

Florida State is one of three ACC teams with +500 odds or better to land Bryant, according to a prop bet provided by MyBookie.ag. Both the Seminoles and the North Carolina State Wolfpack claim +300 odds to land the potential graduate transfer. The Virginia Tech Hokies’ odds sit as +400. The Penn State Nittany Lions are considered the favorite at +200.

A school not listed, however, seems likely to be the first to host Bryant for one of his post-Clemson unofficial visits. Bryant plans to take his first visit with the North Carolina Tar Heels, 247Sports.com reports. Bryant will spend this coming weekend in Chapel Hill as North Carolina hosts Virginia Tech. Nathan Elliott, the Tar Heels’ current starting quarterback, is a junior with one year of eligibility remaining.

Here’s what Marshall Street business owners think of this luxury student apartment complex (DO; Folts)

The opening of The Marshall, a luxury student apartment complex, has increased foot traffic on Marshall Street, local business managers and owners said.

The complex that now towers over Marshall Street opened in September after delays prevented it from being ready at the start of the school year. The eight-story complex has a 287-bed capacity, with the first floor reserved for commercial space.

Managers of businesses on and around Marshall Street, adjacent to The Marshall, expressed mixed feelings about the presence of the luxury apartment building.

The new apartments have positively affected the 92-year-old Varsity Pizza, said Frank Polera, manager of Varsity Pizza. The South Crouse Avenue pizza shop has adjusted its hours to maximize student business, Polera said.

The shop is now open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays and has added an all-day Sunday brunch option, which has become “really popular,” he said.

Manny’s is the oldest establishment on Marshall Street, selling Syracuse University apparel and merchandise since 1949. Its manager, Bill Nester, has worked at the clothing store for more than 35 years.
