National-Mushroom-Day.jpg

Welcome to National Mushroom Day!

National Mushroom Month is celebrated each year throughout the month of September. During the time, the U.S. Department of Agriculture takes advantage of the opportunity to educate people on the versatility mushrooms offer, including health benefits. As a result, mushrooms are gaining more and more appreciation as we learn more about them.

In order to fully celebrate the heritage of mushrooms, we must first learn about the Mushroom Capital of the World. Located just outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, you will find a small town known as Kennett Square. Surprisingly, this small Pennsylvanian town produces over a million pounds of mushrooms a day. Each year Kennett Square holds the annual Mushroom Festival starting with a parade. Visitors can enjoy tours of mushroom farms or visit vendors to buy food and other goods.

Syracuse has built the top special teams unit in the nation (DO; Liberman)

Sterling Hofrichter’s booming 51-yard punt hung in the air for more than five seconds, granting Jamal Custis ample time to race downfield and front Clemson’s punt returner, Amari Rodgers. Custis stood two yards away, inching closer as Rodgers stepped backward to field Hofrichter’s punt.

When the ball reached Rodgers, it bounced off his chest and onto the grass. Custis lunged on top of it, giving Syracuse the ball inside the red zone as the third quarter ended. SU scored on its next drive to begin the fourth. In a game where Syracuse allowed 293 rushing yards and did not score in the final 13 minutes, its special teams kept it competitive.

“Sterling’s a great punter,” Custis said. “He’s giving me time. When you got a guy back there punting like that, it makes my job easier.”

SU’s special teams unit has performed admirably all season, and when Syracuse (4-2, 1-2 Atlantic Coast) faces North Carolina (1-4, 1-2) this Saturday in the Carrier Dome, it will do so boasting the top special teams unit in the country according to footballoutsiders.com.

“Special teams is huge,” Hofrichter said. “A lot of people don’t give it as much credit as they should.”

Syracuse football-North Carolina betting line: SU opens as double-digit favorite (PS; Mink)

Syracuse football opened as a big favorite to snap a two-game losing streak when it returns to action Saturday afternoon against North Carolina.

The Orange opened as an 11-point favorite against the Tar Heels, according to Vegas Insider. UNC comes limping into the Carrier Dome next week with a 1-4 record and questionable quarterback play.

Syracuse (4-2, 1-2 ACC) spent much of its off week resting and recovering from various bumps and bruises that piled up through its first six games of the season. Assistant coaches went on the road to recruit.

North Carolina will be without redshirt sophomore defensive end Tomon Fox, who will continue to serve a four-game suspension for his role in selling team-issued, special edition sneakers. Fox is among the team leaders with 4.5 tackles for loss.

This will be the first meeting between Syracuse and North Carolina since the Orange joined the ACC.

AP Top 25 poll: Notre Dame in top four, LSU enters top five in latest college football rankings (cbssports.com; Kercheval)

Notre Dame and LSU had very different games in Week 7. The Fighting Irish needed a second-half rally to survive and advance over Pitt while LSU beat the doors off of Georgia in a SEC showdown. Either way, those two teams have rounded out the new top five in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll.

The Irish climbed one spot to No. 4 as they look to remain unbeaten and in the College Football Playoff hunt. LSU jumped eight spots, the most of any ranked team, all the way up to No. 5. The Tigers were previously No. 5 prior to their road loss at Florida in Week 6. Speaking of Georgia, the Bulldogs fell six spots to No. 8 and were leaped by Michigan and Texas, two teams that also made top-10 appearances in the newest coaches poll.

Ohio State and Clemson remain in the top four while Oklahoma and UCFround out the top 10. The teams with the biggest drops were a trio of former top-10 teams: West Virginia (-7), Washington (-8) and Penn State (-10), all of whom suffered losses on Saturday. Three new teams entered the top 25 on Sunday: Iowa, Michigan State and Washington State.

Here's how the entire poll looks:

  1. Alabama
  2. Ohio State

Middle Tennessee denies allegation of player mistreatment - FootballScoop (footballscoop.com; Barnett)

A Tennessee fan who runs a Vols Facebook account came forward Friday with allegations from a former Middle Tennessee offensive lineman who said then-Blue Raiders offensive line coach Jimmy Ray Stephens got into a physical altercation with the player.

According to the player, Mike Williams, Stephens punched him “three to four times” in the face and attempted to choke him out.

Additionally, the Tennessee fan posted audio of MTSU head coach Rick Stockstill head coach purportedly admitting to falsifying drug tests. However, the 20-second clip doesn’t reveal much of anything.

MTSU released a statement calling the allegations “unfounded.”

“Middle Tennessee State University received information related to taped conversations between head football coach Rick Stockstill and a former student athlete. We take all such matters seriously and, as such, a review outside of Athletics was conducted, which determined the allegations were unfounded,” the statement read.

Said Stockstill: “It appears I did not reach this former player of almost 10 years ago, and it eats at my heart. These audio clips are short excerpts from a much longer conversation and they leave an impression that is misleading, inaccurate and false.

Follow The Fish Friar's trip to Maine seafood supplier on Instagram (PS; Weaver)

A few times each week, Giovanni Giardina orders fresh seafood from Maine for The Fish Friar.

If he gets the order in by 11 a.m., the lobster, scallops, haddock, squid, mussels and claims arrive in downtown Syracuse by 7 a.m. the next day. "The turnaround is amazing," he says.

The Fish Friar opened in April 2017. Every few months, the restaurant's owners, Giardina and Phil Kelly, visit their supplier in Portland, Maine, to see where the seafood they serve in Syracuse comes from.

Today and Saturday, they're making the trip to Free Range Fish & Lobster again.

And this time, they're taking us along.

Giardina and Kelly are taking over syracuse.com's food Instagram account -- @syracusefood - for the trip.

Follow along today and Saturday for behind-the-scenes photos and videos of the seafood's journey. They'll show us how a major seafood supplier in Maine catches, sorts and ships the food that The Fish Friar prepares for Syracuse customers.
