Welcome to Abet and Aid Punsters Day!

Abet and Aid punsters day is a day to make bad puns, and to encourage others to do the same. Instead of groaning at puns, which often happens, the day is to be spent laughing at them, like you would any other joke.

Puns, also known as paronomasia, are a type of wordplay that uses similar sounding or looking words, or figurative language, to create an oftentimes humorous effect. Puns have been around for millennia, being used in Sumerian cuneiform, and Egyptian and Mayan hieroglyphics. Today they are common in jokes and comedy shows, and are often used in literature.

An uneven college path led Ryan Guthrie to Syracuse (DO; Graham)

On a cold and windy December morning in Iowa Falls, Iowa, Ryan Guthrie sat in the office of Ellsworth Community College then-head coach Jesse Montalto and thought about New Orleans.

It was national signing day for junior colleges and Guthrie had his National Letter of Intent ready to fax to Tulane, where he planned to play his final two years of college football.

He ignored two Division I offers the year prior for a better opportunity — he wanted a Power 5 look. Still, it eluded him. Syracuse had come on strong late, spurring Guthrie to decommit from the Green Wave two days before signing day, but there was no offer from the Orange. He had resettled on Tulane.

Then his phone rang. Guthrie doesn’t remember exactly who was on the other end of the line, but it was Syracuse, offering him a scholarship.

“He’s a pretty stoic kid,” Montalto, who had been told of the offer the night before, said, “so he doesn’t say a ton. But you could tell he was excited about it and he was happy … It was almost relief.”

For Guthrie, it marked the end of a two-and-a-half year pursuit that took him from the familiarity of north Georgia and dumped him in the middle of Iowa cornfields before he advanced him to Syracuse. He bet on himself and with one last game remaining in the Carrier Dome for the Orange, he won.

Meet the Syracuse football senior class that turned the program around (PS; Bailey)

Jamal Custis called it the elephant in the room.

After starting 4-0 for the first time since 1991, Syracuse football lost a pair of heartbreakers at No. 2 Clemson and Pittsburgh.

The feeling surrounding the program entering the bye week was not unlike ones experienced by the senior class in past years, seasons that all ended in defeat and humiliation. No one in the graduating class had won more than one November game in their careers.

That week, head coach Dino Babers put his team through a gauntlet of conditioning drills and 6 a.m. practices -- "It was almost like a baby hell week," he said -- but the seniors, too, wanted to send a message to their ,teammates. This year would be different if they had anything to say about it.

Quarterback Eric Dungey and linebacker Kielan Whitner, among others, organized a host of player-led meetings including offensive personnel, defensive personnel and various position groups.

"We had a lot of time to think about what we wanted to do and think about how we wanted to go with this team," Custis, a redshirt senior wide receiver, said on Tuesday. "A lot of the leaders stepped up during that time and we had little meetings about what we're trying to do, what team we've got this year, what we know we can do.
"That bye week kind of helped us regroup ourselves and our thoughts and our efforts."

It was that concerted approach by the senior class that helped settle the team in before returning to action with three straight victories.
Now the 13th-ranked Orange (7-4, 4-2 ACC) has cracked the Top 25 for the first time since 2001 and is not only bowl-eligible, but chasing a spot in a New Year's Six contest heading into a senior night matchup with Louisville (2-7, 0-6) on Friday at 7 p.m.

A senior class that entered last offseason with a vision believes it has accomplished perhaps its largest big-picture goal: leave the legacy of being the group that turned this program around. And there's good reason to think they have (Babers does).

Syracuse Looks to Flip the Script on Louisville (waer.org; podcast; Capozzi)

#13 Syracuse (7-2, 4-2 ACC) has a chance to turn a page in program history against the Louisville Cardinals (2-7, 0-6 ACC) this Friday night in the Carrier Dome. The ACC matchup will be Syracuse’s first game in the Carrier Dome as a ranked team since 2001. Friday’s contest comes a week after the team secured its first ACC road win of the year, a 41-24 victory over Wake Forest.

The visiting Cardinals have won their last four contests against the Orange by a combined 126 points. That win streak is the longest in series history between two teams who have played nearly every year since 2003. Last year’s matchup saw Louisville win 56-10, the largest margin of victory by either team in series history.

Despite poor showings in past years, the Orange are favored by many oddsmakers to win by more than 20 points on Friday. This has a lot to do with the departure of 2016 Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson to the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. Jackson put up over 5,000 yards of total offense with the Cardinals in both 2016 and 2017. In comparison, this year’s Louisville offense has just over 3,100 total yards through nine games. The team would have to put up over 600 yards of offense per game for the rest of the season in order to match Lamar Jackson’s total yardage produced in either of his final two years at the school.

Syracuse football vs. Louisville: See our picks, make your predictions (PS; Staff)

BRENT AXE
Syracuse 56, Louisville 21
Syracuse remembers all too well how Louisville kept the gas pedal down to the floor in recent years. The Orange returns the favor on Friday night and locks in for a huge game with Notre Dame next week.

STEPHEN BAILEY
Syracuse 62, Louisville 17
The Orange gets its revenge after four straight brutal losses at the hands of the Cardinals. Much like the last two years, this one should get ugly early -- just in favor of Syracuse this time. SU rolls into a matchup with No. 3 Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium riding its second four-game winning streak of the season.

NATE MINK
Syracuse 54, Louisville 28
Syracuse will be looking to beat Louisville for the first time since joining the ACC.
Louisville has weapons at receiver in Jaylen Smith and Dez Fitzpatrick that can do damage on a fast track, but the motivation to keep winning and chugging toward a potential New Year's Six bowl bid is too great to have a letdown game on a Friday night at home.

JASON MURRAY
Syracuse 48, Louisville 17
This will be a tasteful blowout, meaning Dino won't run up the score on the Cardinals, but the Orange will still run it down Louisville's throat in the second half and score a lot of points.

DENNIS NETT
Syracuse 56, Louisville 13
Syracuse is on a wave offensively, the defense is getting better and one week from this Saturday is the Notre Dame game at Yankee Stadium.

What To Watch For: Syracuse Orange (cardchronicle.com; Wynne)

Last week I decided to turn the #W2W4 post into a look at what Clemson would do to Louisville. I ended up going 2-4 as Clemson ran the ball with ease and forced three turnovers. So, we’re just going to keep doing this until Louisville gives me a reason to stop.

ANDRE CISCO WILL CEMENT HIS SPOT AS A FRESHMAN ALL-AMERICAN

The Syracuse defense has been so much better this year than the previous years under Dino Babers and Andre Cisco is a big reason why. The true freshman has brought an energy and play making ability to this group that they just haven’t had before. I describe what Cuse’s defense was before this year as a “chase” defense. They were the type of defense that you always see chasing people as opposed to stopping them. Cisco stops people and he plays with the “swagger” (I hate that term) that you want out of your play makers.

I think that Cisco will be able to make some plays in the middle of the field for Syracuse. Jawon Pass has been inaccurate over the middle all season and that’s where UofL throws the ball the most. If Malik Cunningham ends up being the guy they go with, I think that the throws down the field will be where Cisco and the rest of the secondary could have some opportunities to make plays.

MOE NEAL WILL RUN FOR A NEW CAREER HIGH

Louisville hasn’t stopped anyone from running the football since the FSU game and this week won’t be any different. Moe Neal has a career high of 116 yards rushing and I think he will top that this week. Louisville has allowed eight different players to run for over 100 yards over the last four games. Neal is due for a breakout game so this is a pretty easy prediction.

Louisville Cardinals vs. Syracuse Orange Prediction and Preview (athlonsports.com; Josephs)

Nationally ranked Syracuse closes out its home schedule with a Friday night tilt against lowly Louisville. The Cardinals blasted the Orange in the teams' last two meetings, winning by a combined score of 118-38 as they racked up more than 400 rushing yards in each of the victories. Of course, there's a slightly different level of talent on Louisville's roster, as quarterback Lamar Jackson is now in Baltimore with the Ravens. The Cardinals have used three different signal-callers this season, and none has come close to Jackson's performance.

Louisville (2-7, 0-6 ACC) has lost six straight games since a 20-17 victory at home against Western Kentucky. Included in this stretch are blowouts courtesy of Virginia, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Clemson. The Tigers put up almost 700 yards of offense in a 77-16 win last week. The Cardinals can't get their running game going and are turning it over way too much. It's a recipe for disaster, which is what this team currently is. A bowl is not in the program's immediate future, and one has to wonder if the team has already packed it in for the season. The school also may choose to cut ties with head coach Bobby Petrino.

It's quite the opposite outlook for Syracuse (7-2, 4-2), which is moving up the polls as it continues to win. The Orange were 4-2 just a few weeks ago before rattling off wins over North Carolina, NC State and Wake Forest. The Orange are steamrolling opponents with a solid run game and a passing attack that has a diverse array of weapons. The offense has scored 132 points in its last three wins. The Orange have not lost yet this season at home and probably won't on Saturday either. Defensively, they'll be looking for a better effort, though, as two solid offenses (Notre Dame and Boston College) await after this one.

...
Final Analysis

Last week I picked Wake Forest to knock off the Orange, and I was wrong. This week there's no doubt in my mind that Syracuse gets the win. My only concern is whether it will be close at all. Sometimes, the emotions of senior night cause slow starts for the home team. Even so, Louisville's offense just doesn't have enough to take advantage. The Cardinals are averaging 112.8 rushing yards per contest. Louisville also has covered just one of its nine games this season and 11 of its last 35 overall. This one will get really ugly in another coming out party for the Orange.

Prediction: Syracuse 44, Louisville 17

Does Syracuse Football Have A Real Chance At A New Year's Six Bowl? (1045theteam.com; podcast; Goslowski)

Yesterday on Levack and Goz, the guys were joined by college football insider Bill Bender. Bender, who covers college football for the Sporting News, offered up his take to as why he believes Syracuse can be in the mix for a major college football bowl game.

Last night's college football committee placed the Orange at thirteenth in the country. Only the Fiesta and Peach bowl will be offering at-large bids to their bowl games. In previous years, an ACC representative would go to the Orange Bowl however this season the Orange Bowl is being used as one of the college football playoff semi final games. If the at large spots were determined by last night's rankings, the Orange would be left out. LSU, West Virginia, Kentucky and UCF would have taken those final four at large bids.

In a breakdown done by syracuse.com earlier in the week , author Nate Mink offered what Orange fans should root for in the next few week to make it happen. (The most important being Syracuse winning their last three games)

Syracuse Orange football delivered; now it's fans' turn (Editorial short take) (PS; editorial)

Syracuse senior quarterback Eric Dungey made a simple plea on Twitter after the Orange won its third-straight game last Saturday.

Last game ever at the Dome on Friday. Been through it all with these guys. How about we pack the dome one time for the seniors Orange Nation? #PackTheDome
-- Eric Dungey (@EricDungey) November 3, 2018

The No. 13-ranked Orange will play its final home game of the season against Louisville at 7 p.m. Friday, and we think Dungey is right. It's time to pack the Dome.

We've heard all the reasons why fans haven't filled the Carrier Dome in over a decade, and the biggest reason is the football just hasn't been good enough. That's no longer the case as Syracuse is ranked for the first time since 2001 and is fighting for a shot to make a New Year's Day bowl game.

It's Senior Day, and the players who have struggled to build a winning program deserve the chance to play in front of a packed house. Community support could play a key role if and when head coach Dino Babers starts to hear offers from other schools. A full house would also be helpful as bowl representatives try to identify a rabid fan base willing to travel.

If you have the money (tickets for Friday's game are as low as $25 on StubHub), go out and watch the Orange seniors light up the Dome one more time in 2018.

Clemson dominating ACC football like few others have (dailypress.com; Teel)

The two most dominant teams in ACC football history won the national championship. The third lost in the national title game.

Undefeated and second-ranked Clemson is following a similar path this season. Indeed, the Tigers have been so overpowering of late that Vegas installed them as 18-point favorites Saturday at No. 17 Boston College.
“They are just playing at a completely different level than anybody else (in the ACC), and we experienced that first-hand in not a good way,” Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said.
Since a 27-23 escape of resurgent Syracuse, the undefeated Tigers have punished Atlantic Division rivals Wake Forest, North Carolina State, Florida State and Louisville by a combined 204 points, or 51 points per game. That surpasses Florida State in 2000 for the most one-sided, four-game stretch in league history — FSU that year turfed North Carolina, Maryland, Duke and Virginia by a combined 184 points.

Those Seminoles won their eight ACC games by an average of 38.6 points before falling in the Bowl Championship Series title game to Oklahoma.

Week 11 ACC football power poll (dailyprogress.com; Counts)

1. Clemson 9-0/6-0 (1): The Tigers were a 40-point favorite heading into last weekend’s game against Louisville, and delivered with a 77-16 win. Quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Chase Brice combined for five touchdown passes and three running backs eclipsed 100 rushing yards, including the ACC’s rushing leader Travis Ettiene (998 yards, 15 TDs). Clemson faces a challenge this weekend at No. 17 Boston College. Next: at Boston College, 8 p.m., Saturday

2. Syracuse 7-2/4-2 (2): Quarterback Eric Dungey was held without a passing touchdown, but he did lead the No. 13 Orange with 119 rushing yards and he was one of four Syracuse players with a rushing touchdown in a 41-24 win over Wake Forest. Expect Dungey to put up video game numbers this weekend with struggling Louisville in town. Next: vs. Louisville, 7 p.m., Friday

3. Boston College 7-2/4-1 (4): No. 17 Boston College has a chance to remain in the race for the Atlantic Division title this weekend at home against defensive ACC champion Clemson. The health of star running back A.J. Dillon is still in question, though. His snaps were limited in last weekend’s win over Virginia Tech, but fellow sophomore Travis Levy stepped in and rushed for a pair of touchdowns. Next: vs. Clemson, 8 p.m., Saturday

ACC Football Rx: Best facilities in CFB? (accfootballrx.com; HM)

From 247Sports: Ranking the Top 25 facilities in college football for 2018
Which college football teams have the very best facilities? Three of the top 25 are in the ACC, and another is a member for every sport except football (and ice hockey)...

24. MIAMI HURRICANES
In May 2017, the Hurricanes broke ground on the $34 million Carol Soffer Football Indoor Practice Facility. The facility includes a 20,000-square foot football operations center that includes coaches offices that overlook the field. Believe it or not, Miami is the last school in the ACC to add an indoor facility. Mark Richt donated $1 million to the effort. The first phase of the 83,000-square-foot facility is expected to be completed in August 2018.

12. FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES
"If you're not building, you're falling behind." All coaches have this mentality and former FSU coach Jimbo Fisher was no different. The Seminoles upgraded their current locker rooms at Doak Campbell in 2014 and has since added a swank player's lounge, but it wasn't enough for Fisher, who bolted for Texas A&M (Top 5 in this year's facility rankings) earlier this month. Florida State needs a football-only facility badly and that's in future plans.

11. NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH
Notre Dame’s simplistic look had quite a dazzling facelift prior to the 2017 season with a new-look locker room for players. The Irish stopped short of bucking tradition however and still walk down the steps to touch the iconic "Play Like A Champion Today" message before heading out to the field.

ACC Football Rx: GameDay in the Bronx? (accfootballrx.com; HM)

I spent a few words this week discussing the surprise stop in Boston* that ESPN's GameDay will be making this weekend, but now it's time to move on... to the following week. Is there a chance that another ACC team will be featured on GameDay in Week 12?

What about Syracuse vs. Notre Dame from Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, NY? Does that sound too far-fetched to you? Maybe it shouldn't. Consider these facts:

Notre Dame is currently ranked 3rd by the CFP Selection Committee, and Syracuse is currently ranked 13th. Both teams are favored to win at home this week, which means the Irish will probably hold at #3 (barring an upset loss by either Alabama or Clemson), while the Orange could easily move up and maybe into the top 10. So the ND/SU game could be a top 10 match-up.

The game is in New York City, which is a place ESPN covets more fans. They've already done one GameDay broadcast from the Big Apple - in Times Square - but it was without a college football game to back it up. ESPN GameDay has been to West Point for a game at Army, but they've never done one from a Major League Baseball stadium, much less Yankee Stadium.

There isn't much in the way of competition. Week 12 is when lots of SEC teams play tune-up games, so most of that conference is out of the running (e.g. Alabama plays host to the Citadel!). There are no other compelling P5-vs-P5 match-ups, IMO. Perhaps the only real competition to host College GameDay that week would be Cincinnati at UCF - which probably would've gotten the call for sure if both teams were still undefeated. IDK, maybe San Diego State at Fresno State?

Second Chance Diner opens in Camillus, serves up a helping of hope (PS; Weaver)

Second Chance Diner serves more than coffee and eggs.

"There is hope," said Eddie DePalma, a recovering addict who is showing that hard work, acceptance and family can change a person's life.

"My life was in a dark place," said DePalma, taking a break from overseeing a packed dining room on Tuesday, just his fifth day in business. He was talking about a few years ago. He'd lost his best friend to an overdose. DePalma himself was addicted to heroin, he said.

Today, he said, "I'm three years' clean." As of Nov. 1, he's the owner of Camillus's newest diner.

DePalma said he got the idea for the diner after driving by the spot at 103 Bennett Road and seeing it was available. (It's the former home to Mo's Pit BBQ.)

He rushed down to look at the space, still not sure what he might do with it. At the time, he was a barber, and he was looking to try something new. He said the name - Second Chance Diner - came to him in a dream.

He took over the space in April but worked for months on rehabbing the dining room, exhaust systems and kitchen. "I put my life savings into it," he said.

He's put a mix of traditional diner food with some state fair influences into the menu. Breakfast includes a breakfast Philly - a Philly cheese steak topped with eggs. There's also a wafflewich and cinnamon-bun sandwich: the sweet carbs serve as bread around eggs, meat and cheese. Customers can get Trix (or other cereals) mixed into their pancakes.
Lunch offers seven different burgers, including one surrounded by donuts. Other sandwiches and salads are available. Desserts include milkshakes or deep-fried candy bars or Oreos.

The diner is open 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. six days a week; it's closed on Mondays. The dining room seats 45.

One-on-One with John Wildhack: "All of us want Coach Babers here for a long time"

“We want Coach Babers. All of us want Coach Babers here for a long time. From day one, I’ve tried to work with Coach Babers to give him the support to build a program that can sustain success” John Wildhack says of their well-maintained relationship. There’s a worry–unfounded or not– that because Babers is enjoying a banner year and because it’s at Syracuse that means he’s leaving. While that outlook is jumping the start line quite a bit, it’s on fans minds as schools like Kansas and Maryland are in the search for a head coach. “That’s just kind of the nature of the industry right now. And that’s the reality. You have to deal with that reality. And I think part of that is, if you have that strong relationship and demonstrable commitment to building and sustaining a program, I think that’s gonna help retain any coach, anywhere” Wildhack said “But again, you never know what happens. It’s a free market and we’ll see.” -Niko Tamurian, CNY Central, Read More
