Welcome to International Men's Day!

International Men's Day is for celebrating men and the contributions they make to society. Talk of creating such a day dates back to the 1960s, but nothing initially came of it. In the early 1990s, groups in individual countries began working to establish an International Men's Day, hoping it would spread to other countries. Professor Thomas Oaster, director of the Missouri Center for Men's Studies at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, started an International Men's Day celebration in 1992, but it was discontinued after 1995. In 1999, the day began being held on its current date. First celebrated in Trinidad and Tobago, it was started by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, who chose the date in part because it was his father's birthday. The holiday gained great support in the Caribbean and spread to be celebrated internationally. Today it is held in over 70 countries.

Syracuse football bowl watch: After loss to Notre Dame, picture becomes clearer (PS; Carlson)

...
The national projections remain varied this week, with two logical destinations the most represented.

Some project Syracuse to the Camping World Bowl in Orlando. The game had multiple officials at Yankee Stadium to watch Syracuse play Notre Dame, and it gets the first selection of an ACC team after the New Years Six games.

If the Orange slips past the Camping World Bowl's selection, it would likely end up back in New York City for the Pinstripe Bowl. The geographical fit between the two is clear.

The Pinstripe is one of four ACC bowls designated as Tier 1 options, along with the Sun Bowl, Belk Bowl and Music City/Gator Bowl. They all have equal selection status. Syracuse's Top 25 ranking would make it an option for any of them, leading to the array of projections below.

ESPN's Kyle Bonagura projects Syracuse to the Camping World Bowl to face West Virginia
ESPN's Mitch Sherman projects Syracuse to the Camping World Bowl to face Iowa State.
SB Nation's Jason Kirk projects Syracuse to the Pinstripe Bowl to face Purdue.
CBS Sports' Jerry Palm projects Syracuse to the Pinstripe Bowl to face Purdue.
NBC Sports' Bryan Fischer projects Syracuse to the Pinstripe Bowl to face Purdue.
Sports Illustrated's Eric Single projects Syracuse to the Sun Bowl to face California.
The Orlando Sentinel projects Syracuse to the Music City Bowl to face South Carolina.

With Poise and Pinstripes, Notre Dame Rolls Past Syracuse in the Bronx (nytimes.com; Tracy)

Even as Notre Dame has marched toward an undefeated regular season, there have been questions about just how good the Fighting Irish really are. Their best victory, over No. 4 Michigan (10-1), came at home in the season opener, and the rest of their opponents have not been all that formidable.

And while Notre Dame is ranked No. 3 in The Associated Press poll, the team entered Saturday’s game against Syracuse just 15th in average scoring margin.

But in what amounted to an unofficial home game at Yankee Stadium, where the Irish have often played over the decades, they quieted skeptics with a 36-3 victory over No. 12 Syracuse, their most impressive showing since beating the Wolverines.

“This narrative of ‘Who’s playing great? Who’s not playing pretty good?’” Coach Brian Kelly said after the game. “We’re playing pretty good right now.”

Offensive struggles sink Syracuse in loss against Notre Dame - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

On paper, it was the biggest game for the Syracuse football program in decades. That paper should be crumpled up and tossed into the recycling bin, suggesting it can possibly be turned into something useful.

Just about everything went poorly for the #12 Orange, who were thumped by #3 Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium, mustering only a field goal with ten seconds remaining in the game to avoid a shutout in a 36-3 rout. Even the usual calling cards for SU were absent as they fell to 8-3 on the season.

Syracuse entered the game ranked fourth in the nation in turnover differential at +13. The turnover battle went in favor of the Irish (11-0), 3-1, and they converted those miscues into ten points.

The high-powered Orange offense entered the day ranked sixth in scoring at 44.4 points per game and 14th in yards at 482.2. In addition to barely getting on the scoreboard with a last-gasp field goal, SU was nearly doubled up by Notre Dame in yardage, 463-234.

3 takeaways from Notre Dame's 36-3 rout of Syracuse at Yankee Stadium as the Irish head into USC week (chicagotribune.com; Greenstein)

...
1. The players will take the right approach.

USC is 5-6. Notre Dame is 11-0. But don’t expect the Irish to get cocky. They have not beaten the Trojans on the road since 2012, and the 2014 and ’16 losses were not close. And this is a remarkably mature Irish team.

“They love playing together,” Kelly said. “It’s a brotherhood they have built. Look, most coaches will tell you that if you walk into the locker room and you see a group of guys that hang out together and care about each other, you’ve probably got a good thing going. It doesn’t guarantee you’re going to win 10 games. But it does guarantee you will probably do some really good things at times.”

The trip to Los Angeles will mean a little extra to quarterback Ian Book, who is from the Sacramento area but has family in Southern California.

“We’re all excited to play in some good weather,” he said.

Eric Dungey’s status for bowl season may now be in doubt (itlh.com; Patrick)

The senior quarterback left Saturday’s Syracuse football game midway through the first quarter with what is currently being diagnosed as an upper body injury.
This was finally going to be the season that senior quarterback Eric Dungey was going to be able to appear in a bowl game as a member of the Syracuse football team. However, that may no longer be the case after what happened to Dungey during the Orange’s loss to Notre Dame on Saturday.

Midway through the first quarter, the Syracuse quarterback took the football and ran for a gain of four yards. It seemed like there was nothing strange about the way Dungey was tackled, but he apparently suffered an injury on the carry.

My AP top 25 ballot: Northwestern moves up, Syracuse falls down (kansas.com; Robinett)

...
Northwestern has won six of its past seven games and looks like it could push Penn State as the third best team of the bunch. The Cats are up to No. 18 this week.

Trending down

Syracuse.

Not sure how the Orange climbed to No. 12 in the national polls. The best thing they’ve done all season is lose close to Clemson when the Tigers were down two quarterbacks. None of their wins are impressive and they couldn’t stay on the field with Notre Dame on Saturday. I dropped Syracuse to No. 23 this week.

Say hello to ...

Northwestern, Texas A&M and Washington.

It’s hard to find 25 teams that deserve to be ranked, you guys.

College football bowl projections: Penn State takes advantage of West Virginia's upset loss (cbssports.com; Palm)

No. 1 Alabama played its worst half of the season on Saturday, but it wasn't playing an opponent capable of capitalizing on that. The Crimson Tide were tied with The Citadel 10-10 at the halftime before running away from the Bulldogs after the break. Still, it was fun to think about the possibility of the biggest upset in college football history for a few minutes.

An actual upset that did occur, although not nearly on that scale, was No. 9 West Virginia's loss at Oklahoma State. That loss knocked the Mountaineers out of the New Year's Six bowl projections, where they are replaced by No. 14 Penn State.

West Virginia can still play for the Big 12 title with a win over No. 6 Oklahoma. In fact, that result could knock the Sooners out of the conference title chase. A West Virginia win and a No. 15 Texas win over Kansas would create a three way tie and with Oklahoma having lost to the other two, the Sooners are out. If Texas loses to Kansas, the WVU-Oklahoma game is merely for seed in the Big 12 title game.

The other conference championship games matchups are mostly rounding into form. Two are settled. The SEC matchup of Alabama and No. 5 Georgia has been in place for two weeks. Pitt clinched an ACC title game berth against No. 3 Clemson on Saturday with a win over Wake Forest.Four other conferences have one team in place and a winner-take-all game for the other spot this weekend, which we break down below after the updated bowl projections.

ACC Football Rx: ESPN Stories - 11/18/18 (accfootballrx.com; HM)

...
On Saturday, when nothing came easy for most of the playoff contenders during what was supposed to be a ho-hum week of lopsided results, Notre Dame upended the committee's No. 12 team in convincing fashion and further cemented its place in the playoff.
. . .
The Orange entered the game averaging 44.4 points and had scored in 15 straight quarters but were held to just a field goal late in the fourth quarter. Notre Dame's defense allowed Syracuse just 3.2 yards per play and 234 total yards -- well below the Orange's average of 482.2 yards.

"Defensively, I thought the plan was outstanding," Kelly said. "We executed it flawlessly."
. . .
Notre Dame now has an 88% chance to make the playoff (but only a 7 percent chance to win it).
. . .
"If they play the way they played us," Babers said of the Irish, "they will probably have an opportunity to play for a national championship."

Pitt cracks top-25 polls after nabbing ACC Coastal title (triblive.com; DiPaola)

Pitt’s four-game winning streak that carried the team to an ACC Coastal championship received some significant national recognition Sunday when the Panthers were slotted No. 24 in the AP poll and No. 25 in the coaches poll.

It is the first time Pitt has been ranked since the end of the 2016 regular season when the Panthers were ranked 22nd in the AP and 23rd by the College Football Playoff committee. Pitt hasn’t been in the coaches poll since Oct. 25, 2015 (24th).

Pitt (7-4, 6-1) received 90 voting points in the coaches poll, 129 in the AP, just ahead of Iowa State in both cases. Three of Pitt losses were to teams — No. 3 Notre Dame, No. 8 Central Florida and No. 15 Penn State — that have a combined 29-3 record.

Pitt has won four in a row for the first time since 2015, coach Pat Narduzzi’s first season.

Pitt will end the regular season at Miami on Saturday before meeting No. 2 Clemson, the ACC Atlantic champion, Dec. 1 in Charlotte, N.C., for the conference championship.

ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit’s sons to play football at Clemson (thestate.com; Connolly)

ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit is required to keep a close eye on Clemson every week as the Tigers appear headed towards the College Football Playoff for the fourth consecutive season.

Herbstreit will have another reason to watch Clemson beginning next season as his sons are set to join Dabo Swinney’s squad.

Herbstreit’s twin sons, Jake and Tye, are set to walk-on at Clemson, Herbstreit told Fox News 17 (WZTV) in Nashville.

Jake and Tye are currently playing at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville.

25 best skiing destinations in Upstate NY: Downhill slopes, cross-country trails (PS; Axelson)

Below, you can find the 25 best skiing destinations in Upstate NY, from world-class winter mountain resorts to hidden gem trails in the woods.

METHODOLOGY

This is a list of the best ski resorts in Upstate New York, according to Yelp. "Best" is measured using an algorithm that looks at the number of reviews and star rating for a business, as well as other factors like number of negative reviews and recency of reviews.

#25 Snow Ridge Ski Resort, Lewis County
3.5 stars, 4 reviews
One customer says: "The snow, the community, and the positive vibes stood out. While the vert is small, there's enough pitch to ski 2 ft of settled snow with ease. Oh, and on a Saturday with a high school race, there were still empty tables in the lodge at lunch and never longer than a 3 chair wait to load."
Website, Yelp
4173 West Rd
Turin, NY 13473

#24 Bond Lake Winter Complex, Niagara County
3.5 stars, 2 reviews
One customer says: "The trails wind through apple orchards, tall pines, past ravines and open fields. There are two beautiful lakes to view. Myer's lake is my favorite to ski around. Easy parking, a warming house with bathrooms and a roaring fire add to the experience. There are also 2 ice skating rinks and a giant sledding hill."

OT - so, Whiteface is NOT a Top 25 skiing destination in NY State??
Solid work there, SubStandard

Also - Catamount is a nice little ski area in the Berkshires, right on the NY/MA border.

Now, perphaps the PS considered it a MA ski resort due to that, but their address is Hillsdale, NY.
It's definitely better than some of those other Top 25 areas listed that nobody has ever heard of.

Why does the Times article say “what amounted to an unofficial home game“!? It was an official home game! Great reporting!
