How Syracuse football landed 4-stars Mikel Jones, Lee Kpogba; LBs to enroll early (PS; Bailey)

When Mikel Jones was introduced to Lee Kpogba at the start of a Syracuse football official visit weekend in early November, the name rang a bell.

Jones remembered Kpogba from a camp. He remembered that he was a linebacker.
By the time the two flew back south together out of Hancock International Airport on Nov. 11, it was clear they had far more in common, including a joint future.

"We talked about what coaches we talked to, who recruited us and basically the relationship that we had with the coaches," Jones said.

"I was telling him like, 'Man, this might be the move,'" Kpogba said. "He was like, 'We should definitely come here.'"

Two days before Kpogba committed to Syracuse last Tuesday, becoming the first domino to fall in a recruiting hot streak, the Parkland (Winston-Salem, N.C.) High School senior confided a secret in SU head coach Dino Babers before leaving campus: his decision was made.

...

Was Syracuse football's hire of Dino Babers the best coaching move of 2016? (PS; Mink)

...
3. DINO BABERS (SYRACUSE)
Babers is 17-19 in three seasons at Syracuse, but he posted SU's first nine-win season since 2001 after back-to-back four-win seasons.
Two of the Orange's three losses came by a combined 11 points, and SU had fourth-quarter leads in both of them.
If not for the Orange Bowl hosting a College Football Playoff semifinal this season, Syracuse would be heading to the Orange Bowl as the second-highest ranked team in the ACC (assuming Clemson beats Pittsburgh on Saturday).
And, SU is perhaps the best team positioned to challenge Clemson in the ACC Atlantic next season.

2. SCOTT FROST (CENTRAL FLORIDA)
Frost was interviewed by the Syracuse search committee, but, according to Little, gave off a vibe he may have had his sights set on a better job down the line.
That intuition turned out to be right, but it's hard to fault any coach for ascending up the ranks as Frost has done.
He turned in an unbeaten season at Central Florida last season before accepting the job at Nebraska.

1. KIRBY SMART (GEORGIA)
There are four coaches in the country who have won a national championship (Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Dabo Swinney and Jimbo Fisher).
If you were to take bets on the coach who would next join that list, Smart's name has to be at the top.
He has Georgia in the SEC title game for the second-straight season and came within earshot of dethroning Alabama in last year's national championship game.
Smart has Georgia recruiting at the elite level it ought to be doing, seemingly positioning the Bulldogs for championship opportunities in the years to come.

Orange Watch: A tribute to Syracuse football quarterback Eric Dungey - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: As Eric Dungey barreled his way to his second of three rushing touchdowns late in the second quarter of this past weekend’s 42-21 blitz of Boston College, we again thought back to last July’s ACC Football Kickoff event in Charlotte. The visual in our mind of the pained look on Dungey’s face, and the strain in his voice, as he protested with the media crowding around his table that he certainly wasn’t going to settle for a minimum of six victories to finally qualify for a bowl game. No, he was thinking much bigger than that.

We’ll be up front. We were going to write this article a week ago heading into the Boston College game, not sure if Dungey, looking like he was in excruciating pain at Yankee Stadium several days prior, was even going to play in his regular season finale, despite the multiple hints Dino Babers dropped at his Monday (11/19) press conference including his senior leader getting into a shared hot tub with himself and Tommy DeVito “on his own” the day after the Irish loss.

But that was foolishness. Eric Dungey was not going to miss his final regular season game in a Syracuse uniform, and he said so himself after his dazzling, school record-tying, six touchdown performance (three rushing, three passing) against the dazzled Eagles.

“I wasn’t going to miss my final game,” Dungey simply explained last weekend after moving into fifth place all-time among the ACC’s career total offensive yardage leaders with 11,008 in 38 games at the ‘Cuse. “The training staff was awesome (all week), they spent hours with me. I’m thankful to them. We’ve gone through a lot here, we’ve finished last in the ACC, to walk off the field (finishing 9-3), it feels great.”

Which leads to the question how on earth could Eric Dungey not be the first or second team all ACC quarterback?

ACC

1. Clemson Tigers (12-0)
The Clemson secondary is the weak link, and it was exposed early on against South Carolina. The Tigers have to play better there if they want to compete for a national championship.

2. Syracuse Orange (9-3)
Syracuse completed its best regular season since 2001 with a decisive win over Boston College. Dino Babers is building something special up north.

3. NC State Wolfpack (8-3)
This team is far from dominant, as evidenced by its overtime win over North Carolina. But with a game against East Carolina set for next week, NC State still has a shot at a 10-win season.

ACC Football Rx: BR: Winners/Losers Week 13, 2018 (accfootballrx.com; HM)
...
Winner: Eric Dungey's Regular-Season Farewell
One of the most underappreciated college football players from the past four seasons went out with a cannon shot on Saturday as Syracuse trounced struggling Boston College in Chestnut Hill on its way to a quality bowl game.

Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey has often battled injuries, playing in just 26 games in his first three seasons. This year, he's battled inconsistency and has even been benched a couple of times in favor of talented youngster Tommy DeVito.

But Dungey has been a stabilizing force who's helped coach Dino Babers build the Orange into a ranked program, and the dual-threat senior played his final regular-season game against the Eagles on Saturday, turning in his best effort of the season in a 42-21 win.

The Orange actually were underdogs on the road, but Dungey made sure that wouldn't hold up. Syracuse rebounded nicely from last week's lopsided 36-3 loss to Notre Dame in which Dungey left the game early with an upper-body injury.

Dungey was able to play Saturday, and he was a dynamic force against the Eagles. He completed 21 of 34 passes for 362 yards and three touchdowns, and the Eagles had no answers for him. He added 34 yards on 18 carries and scored three more times on the ground.

All six Syracuse touchdowns came via the arm or legs of Dungey. He propelled the Orange to a 9-3 regular-season record and gave them their sixth ACC win in what has been a brilliant step forward for Babers' program.

Even better, they sent Dungey out in style.

Pat Narduzzi finishes 3rd in ACC Coach of the Year voting (post-gazette.com; Batko)

When it comes to honors for coaches, there are usually two schools of thought: Pick the one with the most dominant team, or the one who exceeded expectations the most.

Pitt football coach Pat Narduzzi is a far cry from Clemson’s Dabo Swinney in that first category — though his team will have the chance to win that matchup head-to-head Saturday night — but you could make an argument that he satisfied that second criterion. Either way, the fourth-year Panthers boss finished third in voting for the ACC’s 2018 Coach of the Year, receiving nine first-place nods from a combination of the league’s media and coaches.

Swinney received 27 of the 60 votes to win the award for the second time and first since 2015, the year that began Clemson’s run of three consecutive ACC championships. The Tigers will try to make history with four in a row this weekend against Pitt.

“I just think he’s a great fit for their program,” Swinney said of Narduzzi. “When I think of Pittsburgh, I think of toughness, I think of grit. I think he epitomizes those two things. He’s a tough, hard-nosed football coach. He’s passionate. He loves the players. He has a defensive background. Their team is kind of built that way.”

Syracuse Football: Dino Babers gets robbed of ACC Coach of the Year (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers had a magical year in 2018. Despite that he was robbed of the ACC Coach of the Year award.

The announcement came in the early afternoon of Tuesday November 27th. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney wins his second ACC Coach of the Year award after an undefeated 2018 campaign.

Now Dabo is a damn good coach and he deserves all the praise for what he has built the Clemson Tigers into, but honestly Clemson was expected to perform this well and they did.

While on the other hand Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers was projected to finish last in his side of the ACC. Instead he finished second behind Clemson, a team that he did beat in the loud house in 2017. A team that Dino pushed to the limit in Death Valley and was dominating the entire game before letting it slip away in the final moments. Does that not mean anything to anyone?

Pitt’s wild upset and near-upset history, already featuring Clemson (sbnation.com; Kirschner)

Unranked Pitt plays No. 2 Clemson in the ACC Championship on Saturday, a meeting of two teams that have combined to go 19-5 this season, technically.

The objective evidence says Pitt should not compete in this game.

The Panthers are nearly four-touchdown underdogs in both Vegas lines and S&P+ projections. They’re here because they were the least objectionable team in the league’s Coastal division. Clemson’s here because it’s been perfect. The Tigers shouldn’t need a home-field advantage but figure to have basically that in Charlotte anyway.

Of course, Pitt transcends objective evidence.

Here’s the whole recent history of that, which includes the last time these teams met with Clemson ranked No. 2.

2002: Pitt 28, No. 3 Virginia Tech 21

The Hokies were 8-0 when Pitt visited on the first weekend in November. Yet Pitt’s upset win was the start of a 2-4 Hokies finish that turned them from frontline contenders to afterthoughts in their second year A.V. (After Vick).

Bowl Watch Week 14: Despite Tech loss, Virginia still has hope for the Belk Bowl (streakingthelawn.com; Trogdon)

After suffering a(nother) stunning loss to the Virginia Tech Hokies, the Virginia Cavaliers’ bowl fate appeared to be sealed Friday night. And the outcome looked grim—Shreveport or Detroit levels of grim. While Bronco Mendenhall and the players would have still said all the right things if they were looking at a lower tier bowl, it would nonetheless have been a bittersweet “reward” to end another season in which UVA couldn’t capitalize on its gaudy early record.

But as Friday turned to Saturday, Virginia’s fortunes may have begun to improve. Simply put...#goacc happened.

Consider: Pitt fell on the road to Miami, leaving both teams with 7 wins. Boston College lost at home to Syracuse, leaving the Eagles with 7 wins. Same for Georgia Tech, which fell to Georgia. And same for Duke, which inexplicably lost to Wake a Forest at home by 50.

Tally it all up and six ACC teams finished the season at the seven-win plateau, an unlikely Pitt upset of Clemson in the ACC title game notwithstanding. Talk about a mucky and mediocre middle.

The carnage around the conference left Virginia in decent shape to snag a Tier 1 ACC Bowl game. This is despite the Hoos losing their last two games in heartbreaking fashion and dropping three out of four. In this instance, it appears that lucky was better than good.

So where is Virginia headed?

ACC Football Power Rankings Week 13: Clemson finishes on top in style - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

Other than a few bits and pieces (NC State and Virginia Tech), the ACC football regular season has come to its conclusion. In Charlotte, the table is set for Clemson and Pittsburgh. Can Clemson win its fourth straight ACC football title? We will see in a few days.

Before that, though, let’s check out the final ACC Football Power Rankings of the 2018 regular season.

No. 1 Clemson

For the fourth time this season, Travis Etienne ran for 150 yards and two touchdowns in a game — Clemson’s 56-35 win over South Carolina. Etienne is the only ACC player to hit this benchmark multiple times in 2018.

No. 2 Syracuse

Eric Dungey keeps doing his thing. After Saturday’s win over Boston College (362 passing yards, six total touchdowns for Dungey), the veteran quarterback is now one of only two FBS players with 2,500 passing yards and 700 rushing yards this season. The other: Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray.

No. 3 NC State

It wasn’t pretty, but NC State won its third straight game over UNC; it was also the third straight victory for the Pack in Chapel Hill. Senior running back Reggie Gallaspy II ran for 129 yards and five touchdowns, which tied a program record.

Clemson Football: 3 Steps to fixing the Tiger secondary (rubbingtherock.com; Spencer)

The biggest concern for Clemson football moving forward is the secondary. What do the Tigers need to do to get better in the defensive backfield?

Clemson football is 12-0.

That should be reason for celebrating. The Tigers finished with a perfect regular season and have a chance to make it back to the College Football Playoff for a fourth-straight year with a win over Pitt in the ACC Championship Game Saturday night.

While the issues in the secondary should be a concern, there are areas where the Tigers can get better.

Here are three things that will help the secondary heading into the postseason.

One big key to all 10 conference championship games (SI; Rapaport)

And then there were 20. Teams with a chance to win a conference title, that is.

For the first time in college football history, each of the 10 FBS conferences will hold a title game to determine their 2018 top dog. There will be a rematch of last year’s national championship game (SEC) and a Red River Showdown (Big 12) and a Ragin’ Cajun/Mountaineer clash (Sun Belt), to name just a few.

All 10 matchups will take place this weekend, and each game offers its own unique storylines, matchups and postseason implications. The six teams with a realistic chance to grab one of the three remaining College Football Playoff berths—without a conference title to play for, independent and undefeated Notre Dame is all but assured a spot—are in action this weekend with one last chance to impress the committee.

I thought it was telling that Babers was so close to Swinney in the voting (22 to 27), with ALL other ACC coaches getting just 11 votes... FWIW, I probably would've given the nod to Babers, but I can see the logic in Swinney as well.

Hokie Mark, any concern down there about the season you just had. Any pressure on Fuente?

the logic will always be, is it harder to coach a really solid team to a solid season or a bad team to a great season? I think what Saban did with ala and blowing everyone out was a much better job than what Dabo wid with clemson where a tough refs call actually saved him from 2 losses.

Not yet. Most Hokies saw the mass exodus of players on the defensive side in the off season and knew the team was going to struggle this year. The test for Fuente now is recruiting...
