Welcome to St Nicholas Day!

St. Nicholas Day celebrates St. Nicholas, a popular minor Christian saint in Western and Eastern churches. In the fourth century, he was a bishop in Myra, a Greek town in the ancient district of Lycia, in Asia Minor, near present-day Demre, Turkey. The story of much of his life is not based on historical evidence, but on traditional stories and legends. It is believed that he was born in Patara, a seaport in Lycia, and that he traveled to Palestine and Egypt before coming to Myra. He was imprisoned for his beliefs by Roman Emperor Diocletian but was freed by Constantine the Great. He is believed to have been at the first council of Nicaea, and there are many legends that say he performed miracles for the poor. He was known for giving gifts and putting coins in people's shoes, and this influenced the way he is celebrated, as well as how other traditions during the Christmas season are celebrated.

St. Nicholas was buried in his church in Myra, and over the next few centuries, pilgrims began coming to his shrine. In 1087, his remains were stolen and taken to Bari, Italy. This increased his popularity in Europe, and Bari became a popular pilgrimage site. Most of his remains are still at the Basilica of San Nicola in Bari. His popularity continued to rise during the Middle Ages, but disappeared in most places except the Netherlands during the Reformation. His popularity has come back in Europe, and he has since become the patron saint of many places and people.

WVU’s Collins Still Sees Orange After All These Years - West Virginia University Athletics (wvusports.com; Antonik)

Confirmed. The Mountaineers are still very bitter about the infamous 1992 game...

When word came down last Sunday afternoon that West Virginia was playing Syracuse once again in the 2018 Camping World Bowl in Orlando, Florida, at least one dude's systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings began to rise.

Former Mountaineer defensive back Michael Collins will readily admit that he still doesn't care too much for anything Syracuse. He didn't care too much for Syracuse back in 1992, nor in 2002, nor in 2012 the last time we talked before the two schools played in the Pinstripe Bowl in New York City.

You see, Collins bore the brunt of the biggest miscarriage of justice in Milan Puskar Stadium history.

What transpired that sunny, October afternoon in 1992 was far worse than anything we've seen in the subsequent 26 years since it happened. The seven refs working the Syracuse game that day screwed things up so royally that Hall of Fame coach Don Nehlen used the word "crime" numerous times during his very brief postgame press conference to describe what he saw.

The controversy began with less than three minutes to play in a very physical, very emotional game the 24th-ranked Mountaineers were leading 17-13 over the 14th-rated Orange.

Syracuse had the football at its own 18 when quarterback Marvin Graves took off on an option run to the far side of the field toward the Orange bench.

Old Big East rivals meet in Camping World Bowl (thedayonline.com; Gold)

West Virginia finished with an 8-3 record, good enough to earn a trip to Orlando, Florida for the Camping World Bowl.
WVU has gone to a bowl game the past four seasons but only won one of them (the 2015 Cactus Bowl against Arizona State).

The Mountaineers opponent on Dec. 28 will be the Syracuse Orange. Syracuse is coming off of a 9-3 (5-2 ACC) record, which saw them sit in second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Coastal, one spot behind conference
champion Clemson.

Head coach Dino Babers is in his third season, with an overall record of 17-19. This was the most successful season of the Babers era, as the Orange went 4-8 in his first two years in charge.

Syracuse finished No. 20 in the College Football Playoff rankings and No. 17 in the AP Poll. It ranked as high as No. 12 in both polls. Those rankings came in Week 12.

The Orange played three ranked opponents this fall. It fell 27-23 to No. 2 Clemson in a game in which the Tiger’s starting quarterback left injured. A month later, at home, Syracuse beat No. 22 NC State 51-41. And in the second to last game of the season, at Yankee Stadium, No. 3 Notre Dame beat Clemson easily, 36-3.

Syracuse equipped to squeeze WVU with its defense (247sports.com; Casazza)

All the college teams that are scrambled across their campuses right now in the time between the end of the regular season and the beginning of bowl game preparation learn about their opponents in different ways. Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey saw West Virginia play Oklahoma on Black Friday. Linebacker Kielan Whitner did the same, but he had an idea a little later that the Orange would play the Mountaineers in the Camping World Bowl, so he got a head start on breaking down tape on his own.
And head coach Dino Babers dug into his memory to exhume a memory he'd rather forget.

"I played them one time in my career, and it didn't end up well," Babers said. "Hopefully it'll go a lot better than the last time we played them."

Babers spent the 2003 season as the running backs coach at Pitt. The Panthers, with Rod Rutherfordand Larry Fitzgerald, were pretty good on offense and were 7-2 and ranked No. 16 after winning at home against No. 5 Virginia Tech. They traveled to Morgantown and were beaten badly, 52-31. Quincy Wilson ran for 215 yards and four touchdowns. Rasheed Marshall threw for two scores and ran for one. John Pennington made one of the best catches you'll ever see. The Mountaineers had 523 yards of offense and 6.5 yards per snap.

Baber's knows the Orange will have to do better this time, and even after he rattled off all of this WVU team's offensive stars, he believes they will.

"I imagine this will be a defensive contest," he said.

ORANGE RETURN - Syracuse University Athletics (cuse.com; Wildhack)

WE'RE BACK BOWLING!

The Camping World Bowl reached out at 3:23pm Sunday, and by 3:30pm, we had accepted and let you know we are headed to Florida. I love this game. A little sun just after the holidays and a match up with an historic rival.

I know some seating areas in the Syracuse sections are sold out or nearing sold out, so please move quickly.SPEAKING OF RIVALSThe Hoyas are coming to town. One of the most classic rivalaries and probably THE match up that put my old place of business, ESPN, on the map. There is nothing like Syracuse versus Georgetown.
Join us in the Dome! cuse.com/tickets and 888-Dome-Tix. Although this is the end of the current home and home, we are working to keep this rivalry going. We know it is important, not only for our fans, but for all of college basketball!

HISTORIC SEASON

Congratulations to our Volleyball team on the their post-season run in the NCAA tournament. Last Friday, Coach Yelin's squad made history by playing in the first NCAA tournament game and also by winning! By defeating Yale, we advanced to the second round on Saturday and fell to powerhouse Penn St. on their court. I'm happy for the program and look forward to the success ahead.

Ranking college football's top 10 bowl games you won't want to miss (fltimes.com; Davison)

...
4. Rose Bowl (Washington vs. Ohio State), Jan. 1, 5 p.m.
Urban Meyer added a layer of intrigue to this game by announcing his retirement, but it already had plenty.
Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins may be the hottest player in college football going into the bowl season, throwing 17 touchdowns in the last three games. Haskins made a late Heisman push and is certainly a must-see player in the country.
This could be Haskins final college game, too, if he decides to enter the NFL draft. His stock will rise even more if he puts on another impressive game against a Washington defense that ranks No. 12 in the country.
Offensively, the Huskies will try and keep Haskins on the sidelines by relying on their formidable rushing attack. Myles Gaskin is a 1,000-yard rusher this season, and Salvon Ahmed rushed for 604 yards.

5. Fiesta Bowl (LSU vs. Central Florida), Jan. 1, 1 p.m.
Central Florida has won 25 consecutive games, but that hasn't been enough to get it in the CFP. Beating an LSU team that defeated Georgia earlier this season would be another signature win for UCF.
It's unfortunate that UCF quarterback McKenzie Milton is out, but this offense is still potent and still the third-best in the country. It'll be interesting to see how it fares against the nation's 29th-best defense.

6. Camping World (Syracuse vs. West Virginia), Dec. 28, 5:15 p.m.
Get ready for a shootout. These are two of the best offenses in the country.
West Virginia QB Will Grier found himself in the Heisman conversation all season, and has several weapons in Gary Jennings and David Sills.
Syracuse, meanwhile, is led by quarterback Eric Dungey. Dungey has thrown for more than 9,000 yards in his college career, and will be looking to end it with a win.

7. Peach Bowl (Florida vs. Michigan), Dec. 29, noon
Points will be hard to come by in this matchup.
Michigan has the nation's top-ranked defense. Florida is ranked No. 27.
With that being said, this should come down to whatever quarterback makes the most plays. Michigan's Shea Patterson had a solid first season with the Wolverines (2,364 passing yards with 21 TDs and five interceptions), while Florida's Feleipe Franks posted similar numbers (2,284 passing yards with 23 TDs and six interceptions).

8. Citrus Bowl (Kentucky vs. Penn State), Jan. 1, 1 p.m.
Mark Stoops is going for his first double-digit win season at Kentucky. It would be school's first double-digit win season since 1977.
To get it done, Kentucky will need its defense to step up and slow down Penn State's Trace McSorely. McSorely threw for more than 3,500 yards for a second consecutive season, and is looking to end his college career on a high.
Offensively for Kentucky, running back Benny Snell has to come through. The Wildcats are 6-0 this season when Snell rushes for at least 100 yards.

Tim Green fundraising campaign breaks $1.5 million for ALS research (syracusenewtimes.com; Maddox)

After Syracuse native and former NFL athlete Tim Green announced in November that he had been living with ALS for about five years, on Facebook and during a recent appearance on 60 Minutes, three words lingered on: “Let’s beat this.”
That is the slogan for Tackle ALS, the nonprofit fundraising campaign created in Green’s name to raise money for ALS research. With only about a month of activity, the campaign has raised $1.4 million — and counting — for the Healey Center for ALS at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Adam Weitsman, a longtime close friend of Green’s, is running a local Tackle ALS team. “When he first told me, there were some signs,” Weitsman recalled. “He had problems with his hands, but he did pro football so I just assumed that it was arthritis. But I could feel it, even when I shook his hand, that it was hard for him to grasp.”

Sign the Petition (change.org; JM the Angry Mountaineer Fan)

The Big East rivalry match up of WVU & Syracuse is renewed as the two teams will meet in the Camping World Bowl in Orlando, Florida on December 28th @ 5:15pm on ESPN.

- Shortly after the game was announced, Syracuse Athletic Director John Wildhack decided to shelve the Ben Schwartzwalder rivalry trophy, thus keeping the trophy win or lose against the Mountaineers in the sunshine state

While many WVU fans are disappointed with this bowl, and understandably so, with the aspirations going into the Oklahoma State game, a chance to play and avenge an old rival is always fun. This is true especially around the holidays with our rivals (Happy Thanksgiving Pitt); Getting together with family and friends, and beating an ole foe can send this great group of Mountaineer seniors off with pride for our program.
  • That is, if the other side of that rivalry honors those traditions; As were for the case in the 2012 Pinstripe Bowl, Syracuse Football is again refusing to put the Ben Schwartzwalder rivalry trophy on the line in a bowl rematch in the 2018 Camping World Bowl.

Search results for "Carrier Dome" | Stadium Journey (stadiumjourney.com; Hawkins)

Construction of the Carrier Dome, located at 900 Irving Avenue in Syracuse, New York, began on November 11, 1978 and was completed on September 20, 1980 at a cost of $25.63 million ($94.68 million in 2016 dollars). In 1979, Carrier Corporation donated $2.75 million in exchange for the name rights to the then to be completed dome. That agreement is still in effect today but recently Syracuse University has asked Carrier Corporation for more funds if they wish to keep their name in place. The Carrier Dome is currently owned by Syracuse University and has a football capacity of 49,250. The Carrier Dome is the largest structure of its kind located on any college campus and is the only domed stadium located in the Northeastern United States.

ACC Football Power Rankings: It’s officially Clemson and the rest (saturdayblitz.com; Thompson)

...
3 NORTH CAROLINA STATE WOLFPACK
(9-3) Last Week: 3
NC State had one final regular season game before bowl season started, and they easily dispatched East Carolina 58-3. Ryan Finley threw for over 400 yards and three touchdowns and the Wolfpack picked up win number nine. The Gator Bowl against Texas A&M will close out the season as they hope to pick up win number 10.

2 SYRACUSE ORANGE
(9-3) Last Week: 2
Syracuse takes their high-powered offense to the Camping World Bowl to face Will Grier and the West Virginia Mountaineers. This game may end up 53-50 when it’s all said and done, and should be one of the most exciting bowl games of the postseason. Can Syracuse pick up win number 10? We will have to wait and see.

1 CLEMSON TIGERS
(13-0) Last Week: 1
It was a foregone conclusion, regardless who was the starting quarterback, that Clemson would win the ACC championship. They had too much talent on both sides of the ball, and when Trevor Lawrence was inserted into the lineup the offense got even better. A matchup against 12-0 Notre Dame awaits them in the College Football Playoff, as fans are hoping for Clemson vs Alabama for the fourth time in as many years.

ACC coaching carousel, good news for UVA Football (augustafreepress.com; Graham)

It’s been forever and a damn day since UVA Football has been sittin’ pretty in relation to its peers in the ACC. But, that day is here.

Yes, OK, the ‘Hoos lost, again, ad nauseam, ad infinitum, to Virginia Tech. Fifteen straight, a million straight, whatever.
Still, you’d rather be UVA heading into Year 4 of Bronco Mendenhall than Virginia Tech heading into Year 4 of Justin Fuente, with the writers asking every presser about the offensive coordinator’s continued employment, with Bud Foster getting his own presser to talk about his defense that gives up 30 points and 430 yards a game.

Then, you look across the landscape, first at North Carolina. They’re the Bad in The Good, The Bad & The Ugly T-shirts they used to sell at Mincer’s back in the day.

(The Ugly? That one’s obvious.)

Carolina fired, and rightfully so, Larry Fedora, who you could explain away by saying, injuries, but, injuries or not, back-to-back nine-loss seasons are unacceptable, and 45-43 in seven seasons is not going to get the job done.

So, what does UNC do to get things moving in the right direction? They reach back 20 years and try to make like Mack Brown never left.

Now, the Mack Brown Era, that was an Era of Good Feelings in Chapel Hill. Carolina won 10 games in each of his last two seasons, 1996 and 1997, and he’d have had 11 in ’96 if he’d just kicked a field goal up 17-3 in the fourth in Scott Stadium, as we all remember.

Clemson among the top few teams in the country when it comes to paying assistants (islandpacket.com; Connolly)

Clemson has enjoyed an incredible amount of success on the football field under over the past several years, and the Tigers are rewarding their assistant coaches for it.

Clemson is No. 2 nationally in salaries for assistant coaches, according to the USA Today database, which was released Tuesday.
Ohio State is No. 1 in 2018 at nearly $7.4 million, while Clemson is No. 2 at $6.825 million.

The rest of the top five includes No. 3 Texas A&M (nearly $6.8 million), No. 4 Auburn ($6,555,600) and No. 5 LSU ($6,470,000).

Florida State is the only other ACC team in the top 10, coming in at No. 10. The Seminoles pay their assistants a total of $5,715,000. Louisville is the only other ACC team in the top 25, coming in at No. 23 with a total of $4,222,000.

The SEC leads the way with five schools in the top 10, seven schools in the top 15 and 11 schools in the top 25. Clemson’s in-state rival South Carolina is No. 15 with a total of $5,050,000.

“That’s not fair!”

Kids say that all the time. When an older brother or sister gets to stay up late. Or when the teacher punishes the whole class even though only a few kids were being bad.

Well, kids, here’s something that’s not fair — the College Football Playoff.
On Sunday, a panel of experts picked four college football teams — Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame and Oklahoma — to play three bowl games to determine the national champion.

It’s hard to argue against Alabama, Clemson and Notre Dame. They won all their games in 2018. But there is another undefeated team that did not get picked: the University of Central Florida (UCF). In fact, the UCF Knights are undefeated over the past two seasons, winning 25 games in a row.

Big-time college football is not a level playing field. The 65 teams in the five “power conferences” — the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big Ten, Big 12, Pacific-12 and Southeastern Conference (SEC) — along with Notre Dame always get the four top spots in the College Football Playoff. The 64 teams in the lesser conferences do not stand a chance.

UCF was rated eighth in the country in the final ranking and will play Louisiana State in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Day. This was the highest ranking for a team outside the power conferences in years. But UCF was ranked behind two teams — Michigan and Georgia — that each lost two games in 2018.

Football experts say UCF doesn’t play enough good teams to deserve a better ranking. But that’s unfair, too.

Georgia Tech athletic director Todd Stansbury let it be known in a letter to supporters this week that he was taken aback by the distribution of ACC football bowl bids.

Georgia Tech was one of six ACC teams to finish with seven wins, including Coastal Division champion Pittsburgh, which was 7-6. The others included 7-5 Virginia and Miami, which received invitations to so-called Tier One bowls. Georgia Tech also finished 7-5.

UVa plays South Carolina in the Belk Bowl and Miami meets Wisconsin in the Pinstripe Bowl.

“Based on our 2-1 record against the other seven-win teams in the mix and our solo second-place finish in the ACC Coastal [Division] we felt that we should have received one of those two bids,” Stansbury wrote, “and we made that known to the league office and bowl reps.”

Stansbury went on to say that he was “very happy” for the Yellow Jackets to be in the Quick Lane Bowl, which is being played in Detroit on the day after Christmas, not necessarily an appealing scenario for fans.

Georgia Tech will face Minnesota in the only non-Tier One bowl that can boast having two teams from Power 5 conferences.

Coaching carousel

In the same letter that he sent to donors and season ticket-holders, Stansbury addressed the search for a head football coach to succeed Paul Johnson, who announced plans to retire after his 11 seasons in charge of the Yellow Jackets.

The media already had identified a potential prospect in Ken Whisenhunt, a former head coach of the NFL’s Tennessee Titans who played at Georgia Tech, where one of his teammates was Stansbury.

Last night Senior 1st Team All-ACC Linebacker Germaine Pratt posted a picture on his Instagram account with sports agent Erik Burkhardt, with a sheet of paper on the table, and a pen in his hand.

Burkhardt is also the agent for former All-American NC State Defensive End Bradley Chubb.
Obviously, if Pratt in fact signed his name on that sheet of paper, assuming it’s sealing the deal for Burkhardt to be his agent, he isn’t eligible to play in the Gator Bowl.

James Henderson of InsidePackSports received confirmation from a school official that Pratt will not be playing in the Gator Bowl for the Wolfpack.
Pratt finished the season with 104 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss and 6 sacks. He is the 1st Wolfpack linebacker to earn 1st Team All-ACC honors since Nate Irving in 2010.

UNC acted first, hiring Mack Brown for a second stint.

Louisville hired their new head coach yesterday - Scott Satterfield, formerly at Appalachian State. He was reportedly given a 6-year contract paying $3.25 million/year ($1.65 million base, plus bonuses and incentives) and a $5 million buyout.

Georgia Tech is still looking. According to the AJC,
The only reported candidate thus far has been Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, a Tech grad and a teammate of Stansbury’s... Stansbury said that there is “great interest in becoming the next football head coach at Georgia Tech.”
One thing is clear: GT seems determined to scrap the triple option employed by Paul Johnson.

Every other ACC team still has a head coach - for now, at least.

In other conferences...

...Maryland just hired Mike Locksley (OC, Alabama)
...Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer announced he is retiring after the Rose Bowl
...Kansas State has an opening with the second retirement of Bill Snyder
...Colorado fired Mike MacIntyre, needs a replacement

Of course, Purdue didn't lose their head coach (Jeff Brohm), but it did cost them an extra $3.5 million/year or so, which means they'll have less to spend on his assistants.

Finally, New Jersey recruiting remains wide open as Rutgers retained head coach Chris Ash.

https://accfootballrx.blogspot.com/2018/12/the-problem-with-4-team-playoff.html (accfootballrx.com; HM)

Everybody zeros in on the fact that at least one (and recently two or three) P5 conference champs are left out of the playoffs. While this is certainly bad, it's not the only negative side effect of limiting the field to 4 teams. Other negatives include:
  • No incentive for P5 OOC home and home series - can't afford the road loss
  • Meaningless conference championships - at least 2 champs left out most years
  • College football irrelevance outside of the South - only one champ from outside the South in over a decade
Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany could have led the charge for playoff expansion. After all, his conference has been completely left out of it the last two years, and before that the Big Ten champion (Penn State) was passed over in favor of at-large Ohio State. Instead, he took the coward's way out and supported the status quo [LINK]. With Delany taking the lead, we could have an eight-team playoff by next year.

One of the arguments against expanding the playoff is that it would make the regular season have less meaning. Let me sit back and let the author of that linked article handle this one:
That couldn’t be further from the truth. Because we just witnessed Ohio State score the most points in the history of the biggest rivalry in college football and it didn’t mean a dang thing. It was just passed over thanks to a four-team playoff, forgotten about like it never even happened because of “strength of schedule” and “eye tests” and whatever the committee hit on the dart board for their rationale this year.

What is meaningless right now is the Big Ten and its conference champion. Maybe someday, someone will care enough to do something about it...
The answer is so obvious that everybody but the Big Ten and Pac-12 seem to get it:

https://bisonmedia.areavoices.com/a-little-history-lesson-of-new-york-college-football/ (bisonmedia.com; Izzo)

If you will indulge this blog post today, this weekend’s opponent for North Dakota State hits close to home for yours truly. Colgate University is located in Hamilton, New York, just 75 miles from my hometown of Oswego. Many Bison fans may have never heard of this private school before last Saturday, when they beat James Madison, but this school has a proud football history.

Mike McFeely details one of Colgate’s biggest wins in 2003, when they knocked off Missouri Valley member Western Illinois, 28-27 in a blizzard in Hamilton. I was there that day, I was working at WSTM-TV in Syracuse at the time, it was one of the wilder sporting events I’ve ever covered.

The Raiders have won 10 conference championships and have appeared in the FCS Playoffs 11 times. They have had two Walter Payton winners and will come to Fargo off one of the biggest wins in program history.

Colgate though, gets forgotten even in the state of New York. Syracuse University is the most popular school in the state; the Orange are also the most successful. This is the school of Jim Brown and Ernie Davis, Donovan McNabb and Marvin Harrison. It’s been a while since they’ve been good, but a former FCS coach, Dino Babers (who coached at Eastern Illinois and Jimmy Garoppolo) have the ‘Cuse playing in a bowl game later this month.

Army is a close second with its football success and we’ll get to see that on a national stage this weekend when the Cadets play Navy.

http://blogs.blogs.blogs.blogs.dail...12/colgates-bid-first-ever-fcs-title-carries/ (DO; Gutierrez & Edelman)

As the snow picked up and the clock neared 7 p.m., Colgate players and personnel knelt at Andy Kerr Stadium’s 50-yard line. Dan Hunt, the Raiders’ fifth-year head coach, remained standing.

“I know you guys are scared,” Hunt said to his team, “but we have the opportunity to do something we’ve never done. Trust me, this isn’t impossible.”

Hunt didn’t hide the fact that his team was facing the No. 1 team in the FCS, a lower tier of Division I football: North Dakota State, which he refers to as “the Alabama of their league.” The Bison sport former players such as Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, and they’re undefeated this season.

A strong defense fueled the Raiders (10-1) 2018 season amid their own FCS title run. They’ve tied the FCS record with five shutouts, won their 10th Patriot League title and lost only once all season, to an FBS team that’s now ranked in the AP Poll (No. 22Army). After playing their first home playoff game in 15 years, a 23-20 win over James Madison, the Raiders are two games away from emulating their 2003 Division I-AA title appearance.

“We’ve always been the team who works harder than others,” Hunt said. “But these seniors are a little bit unique. They decided that we’re going to make noise at a national scale. Everything we used to do at a 10, now we do at an 11.”

Excellent restaurants, for us, find a balance between a meat-based center of the plate and extensive use of the near-infinite possibilities of color, texture, flavor and form offered by vegetables and fruit.

On our recent Wednesday visit to Defi Cuisine, we found a clear respect for and imaginative use of the flora side of things, especially in dishes surrounding the main course.

We probably missed some of the excitement of dining at Defi by choosing a table rather than sitting at the bar, from which diners watch the chefs make their dinners. We also chose items from the printed menu over a custom meal (four courses for $75 or six for $95) to offer a review of items more regularly available to other diners.

First, however, we chose cocktails ($9-11) to start, as chefs are also in charge of creative cocktails at Defi. Wines ($46-$183), whiskey, beer and cider are also available.

Our choices were the English Beet ($10)--pureed beets, Lock Tenders gin, lavender and lemon--and an Isle of Lucy ($10)--Ginger Lake whiskey, black walnut bitter, and maple.
