Welcome to National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, also referred to as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day or Pearl Harbor Day, is observed annually in the United States on December 7, to remember and honor the 2,403 citizens of the United States who were killed in the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on December 7, 1941.

"Yesterday, December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan"...

West Virginia Football vs Syracuse: Camping World Bowl is a must watch (saturdayblitz.com; Kimball)

West Virginia Football goes head-to-head against the Syracuse Orange in the Camping World Bowl; a game that could see both teams score north of 30 points.

The West Virginia Mountaineers take on the Syracuse Orange in the Camping World Bowl, in a battle of former Big East foes. The Orange lead the all-time series 33-27, including the last three matchups prior to West Virginia’s departure to the Big 12 conference. But the Mountaineers, who fell just one game short of the Big 12 championship game, look to show off their offensive dominance and finish the season off on a high note.

The Syracuse Orange on the other hand, aim to capture their 10th win, which would mark their first 10-win season since 2001. The Orange were one of the more surprising teams in all of college football this season, finishing off 2018 with a winning record, something they hadn’t done since 2013. Along the way, the Orange fell just short of upsetting the Clemson Tigers but had big wins over NC State and Boston College. A win for the Orange would provide the exclamation point on an excellent season.

Both teams are searching for a final win that will carry over into the 2019 season. Will West Virginia’s offense be too much to handle for the Orange? Or will Eric Dungey will his way to one final victory? With all that’s in store, here are three reasons why you should be watching the Camping World Bowl:

West Virginia (8-3) vs. Syracuse (9-3) in the Camping World Bowl

John: WVU 48, Syracuse 27
Stephen: WVU 42, Syracuse 30
Tessa: WVU 42, Syracuse 27
Andrew: WVU 38, Syracuse 27

While the previous game would blend right in a retirement home lobby, this is one of those matchups that embodies modern football — two teams who care little about defense and win by spreading it out, chucking the ball downfield and hoping to outscore their opponent.

These are two of the most productive offenses in the nation, with West Virginia checking in at No. 8 nationally with 509.9 yards per game and Syracuse ranking No. 15 with 473.2 yards per game. The Mountaineers have scored at least 40 points in each of their past five games. Syracuse topped the 50-point mark in half its games this season. This could be fun.

With both teams consistently scoring grotesque amounts of points all season long, it would be foolish to expect anything but yet another shootout. That’s why our predicted scores mostly feature numbers in the 40s, and we all agree that West Virginia will come out on top — even if it might take 60 points.

LSU's Cole Tracy doesn't win Lou Groza Award; Syracuse placekicker wins honor (theadvocate.com; Kubena)

LSU's Cole Tracy missed out on the Lou Groza Award, the honor for the nation's top placekicker, on Thursday night during the college football award ceremony in Atlanta.

Tracy would have been the first Tiger to win the award.

Wyoming's Cooper Rothe and Syracuse's Andre Szmyt were also finalists for the awards.

Syracuse's Szmyt, who led the nation with 28 made field goals, won the award.

Tracy's 25 made field goals ranked second nationally, and his field goal percentage (86.2) was just over one percentage point less than Szmyt's (87.5).

Tracy drastically improved LSU's kicking game when he transferred into the program this season as a graduate from Division II Assumption College (Worcester, Massachusetts).

Tracy tied the school record for the longest field goal with a 54-yarder against Miami, kicked the game-winning 42-yarder against Auburn, and he tied another school record for most field goals in a game, when he kicked five in a 36-16 win over Georgia.

Which conferences will win bowl season bragging rights? (si.com; Shapiro)

Only four teams still have a chance at a national title, but there will be plenty on the line before the semifinal games kick off on Dec. 29. The unique battles that make up the lower-profile games are often the most compelling part of bowl season, as conferences put bragging rights on the line with head-to-head matchups between teams of comparable standing within their leagues. The SEC’s superiority complex is tested, while that year’s weakest Power 5 conference has a chance to win back some national respect.
So which Power 5 conferences are set up to end 2018 on a high, and which run the risk of being exposed? Here’s our breakdown of the outlook for each.

MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED

SEC: Having the national title favorite certainly helps matters, providing a strong lead horse even if the rest of the conference falters. But it would be a surprise if the SEC’s 11 bowl participants don’t manage to finish above .500.
...
...
ACC: Don’t discount the ACC’s chances of providing the national champion. Clemson was dominant on both sides of the ball this season and could very well hand Nick Saban his second title-game loss in the last three seasons. The rest of the conference, though, will struggle.

Wake Forest and Virginia Tech face uphill battles against AAC teams after scraping their way to 6–6. Darrell Henderson can run all over the Demon Deacons’ unimposing front, while Cincinnati’s stingy defense should limit the Hokies. Don’t expect Georgia Tech to go quietly in Paul Johnson’s final game—the triple option has wreaked havoc on opponents in the past two postseasons—but Minnesota’s defense has improved since a midseason coordinator switch. There are no easy wins for the ACC this bowl season, and a slate of unfavorable matchups could make for a sour conclusion to the year.
Predicted Record: 3–8

From the Sidelines: ACC Championship Game (theclemsonindider.com; Macrae)

Each week I share some thoughts after watching the Tigers From the Sidelines. In this edtiion my thoughts after watching Clemson win their fourth straight ACC Championship From the Sidelines of Bank of America Stadium.

- First a shotout to the Clemson fans that came to the game. I thought the weather might impact the crowd more than it did. The Tiger fans showed and filled most of the seats and most didn't leave early.

- I kept thinking the rain would stop but it didn't. It came down the whole game and didn't even letup for the presentation on the field. The field was not in very good shape. I think that definitely had an impact on the play on the field. I was surprised they didn't have a tarp on the field during the day. That would have helped the field conditions a good bit. If they are going to play the championship game outside that should be a must when they have rains like that.

- Pitt played like a team playing their first ACC Championship game. Before they could blink Clemson was up 14-0. I give them credit as they fought after that but the Tigers were simply way too talented.

Hokies Football Season Wrap-up from a Student’s perspective (gobblercountry.com; Warner)

Wow, what a weird season it was for football at Virginia Tech. After a week, we jumped up to twelfth in the nation by the AP Poll and were showing a lot of promise with our young core and senior leaders. As you probably know, that all changed very quickly with a loss to ODU, and then spiraling down to 4 and 6 with two weeks left. Somehow, the Hokies rallied and grabbed six wins and the Military Bowl saving the season in many ways (and 2 weeks of extra practice which is very needed). As on campus student, I went and asked a couple of students two simple questions to get their perspective on this year...
After high expectations, a big win to open the season, and a high ranking early into the season, are you disappointed with the end results of the season? If so, why?
Student 1: “We lost a lot of guys, but we shouldn’t have been this bad at a school with this much legacy and pride.”
He’s a big football junky so he was very disappointed with how the season went. He felt our high ranking was premature, got people overexcited, and gave some false hope to the team. However, he was happy the fan base continued to show up at games week in and week out.
Student 2: “After being ranked high before losing to ODU and falling to 6 and 6, it was very disappointing.

A little bit less intense of a fan, but still opinionated and disappointed. He didn’t have much to say but was optimistic about the future.

NC State may not have led the league in attendance because of a stadium that only seats 57,600 - but those seats were full most of the time in 2018!

On the other end of this spectrum lives the ACC Coastal Division champion Pitt Panthers. Why was their stadium less than 61% full? Two reasons, IMO: (1) it's a big stadium (68,400 seats - 4th largest in the ACC); (2) those early-season losses to Penn State, UCF and UNC, which probably convinced their fans that this team wasn't going to amount to much. (If that isn't a reason to avoid over-scheduling out-of-conference, what is?)

Canastota's Erie Canal Brewing plans expansion to historic location (PS; Cazentre)

The Erie Canal Brewing Co. is moving ever closer to the old Erie Canal.
The 5-year-old brewery plans to move its production facility and its tap room -- now in two different sites -- into the historic Farr Brother Building along the old canal route in downtown Canastota.
The move, which could be complete by the end of 2019, will combine the brewhouse and tap room in one location with a restaurant. The Farr Brother Building at 102 S. Peterboro St. has most recently housed an outlet of Oneida Healthcare.

"It's an old building, from the original canal era, and a perfect location for Erie Canal Brewing," said Bob Menikheim, whose family bought Erie Canal Brewing in 2015 from founders Sam Lanzafame and Jason Tedford. The Menikheims -- Bob, his wife Joyce, daughter Brooke and daughter-in-law Heidi -- also own and operate Seneca St. Brewpub in Manlius.

The new Erie Canal Brewing location will offer its own beers plus those from other New York breweries, plus New York wines and spirits. The food menu will have an New York influence as well.

"It will be a totally New York experience," Menikheim said.

Erie Canal Brewing's current brewhouse is at 135 James St., in an industrial area of the village, near ZEM's Ice Cream. It opened in 2013.
