Orange Watch: ACC football needs to take the lead and eliminate divisional alignment - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: As the college football bowl season comes to an end with Monday night’s national championship game in Santa Clara, Calif. between the sport’s recent goliaths Alabama and Clemson Tigers, we’re urging ACC Commissioner John Swofford to take the charge in conjunction with those in leadership at his member institutions to remove the Atlantic and Coastal Divisions, have all 14 teams play out a new schedule rotation, with the top two teams meeting annually in the lucrative championship game the first Saturday of December in Charlotte.

When Syracuse travels to play Duke in football for the second meeting in ACC play (and fourth all-time matchup) next season, it will mark the beginning of the second go-round for the Orange against the league’s six Coastal Division opponents other than the annual cross-over game with seventh division member Pittsburgh.

That means that even though they are in the same league, for every six games SU plays a N.C. State or Wake Forest, for example, they are only playing the likes of Miami, Virginia Tech, and Duke only once. And Duke is exactly the model of a private school like Syracuse that it should grow a rivalry with in football, just as it has done quickly over six seasons in basketball and lacrosse.
Of the Coastal teams that have still not played in the Dome since the ‘Cuse joined the ACC in 2013 Georgia Tech is not scheduled to play on campus until 2020, Virginia in 2022, and Miami not until a mind-boggling 2024, or 12 seasons since the former Big East rivals became ACC-mates. 12 seasons!

So, what to do? Scrap the divisions and create new rotations that have each team playing three “rival opponents” each season rotating home/away games. For Syracuse it makes the most sense to simply add fellow Big East ex-Pat Louisville to the current annual games with Boston College and Pittsburgh.

The Orange would play five games against one group of ACC teams in one season, then the other five teams the next season, and reverse the home/away spots the following two seasons for the total of eight ACC games. It would cut the length of time to two seasons, as opposed to six, to play the other 13 conference teams, and four seasons overall to complete home-and-home games with all 13 opponents.

West Virginia’s Bowl Absences Should Serve as a Warning for Syracuse in 2019 – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

While Syracuse fans lay basking in the glory of their convincing Camping World Bowl victory, the West Virginia camp is probably putting an asterisk next to it. With NFL draft stock on the line, quarterback Will Grier, wide receiver Gary Jennings and left tackle Yodny Cajuste all sat out of the bowl game. As one could probably guess, the Mountaineer offense was stagnant and out of sync all night long. A team that averaged north of 40 points was held to just 18 after having a month to prepare for Syracuse’s defense.
While the Orange can point, laugh and throw up upside down W signs in mockery of West Virginia, it should also be taking notes. Those personnel absences will be the exact ones that SU faces in 2019. Syracuse is set to lose its quarterback Eric Dungey, left tackle Cody Conway and 900 yard receiver Jamal Custis. With those essential pieces graduating, there lies plenty of questions surrounding the team with those positions all now warranting a backup to step up.
These changes leave the Orange both more and less prepared, depending on the area. One thing that certainly favors SU is the fact that it has spring ball and the offseason to fix these holes and mesh. West Virginia had just a couple of weeks.

At quarterback, you see some fill-in similarities. The Mountaineers turned to redshirt sophomore Jack Allison, who had only attempted 10 passes prior to the bowl game. Meanwhile, the Orange will have a redshirt sophomore under center in Tommy DeVito. Both guys are pro-style pocket passers who came in with four star ratings. DeVito has already put a bit of a fingerprint on the program. He filled in for two big wins against Florida State and led a thrilling comeback against UNC. But he also had his fair share of hiccups throughout the year. Aside from those performances, DeVito logged time in five games and went 22-for-52 (42 percent) passing the ball with no touchdowns and two interceptions. Both inexperienced quarterbacks will be, and have been asked to be, the motor to high powered offenses. Will DeVito live up to his recruiting ranking as the heir to one of the program’s greatest quarterbacks?

Future is Bright for Syracuse Football (247sports.com; McCallister)

Syracuse football just completed one of its best seasons in program history. It ended with 10 wins for just the seventh time, the most ACC wins since joining the conference, highest ranking in 17 years and have palpable buzz on the national college football landscape. Syracuse's head coach, Dino Babers, was named as a candidate for several jobs prior to signing an extension at the beginning of December, and for good reason. Babers was respected for not only turning Syracuse around in 2018, but for setting the Orange up for sustained success.

Yes Dino is being named as a potential candidate for Miami. However, take a step back and look at things realistically. He just signed an extension with Syracuse, which means a larger buyout and a raise. In addition, Miami has no quarterback, there are unrealistic expectations there (if you don't win 10 games annually, you're out) and he is building something at Syracuse.

Yes the Orange will lose key contributors like Dontae Strickland, Jamal Custis, Ryan Guthrie, Kielan Whitner, Antwan Cordy and others. Yes quarterback Eric Dungey has finished his legendary Syracuse career. Look at the flip side, though. Look who is coming back.

2018-2019 bowl records by conference: Which conference has bragging rights? (fansided.com; Buhler)

The P6 concept takes a hit...

Here are the bowl records for all the conferences in college football during the 2018-2019 bowl season. Which conferences have performed the best?

With nearly all the holiday season bowls in the book, we all have to wonder how the scoreboard looks in terms of conference dominance in major college football.

While the SEC has dominated in recent years, and the Pac-12 has struggled, no Power 5 conference is really asserting itself over the field this bowl season. Entering New Year’s Day, all Power 5 conferences were hovering around .500. That does seem a little odd.

However, there is a bigger discrepancy in the Group of 5. Three Group of 5 conferences finished above .500 this bowl season. That would be Conference USA (4-2), the Mountain West (3-2) and the Sun Belt (3-2).

Unfortunately, The American finishes below .500, after the UCF Knights lost in the Playstation Fiesta Bowl to the LSU Tigers. The poor MAC went a dismal 1-5 with its only bowl victory coming via a 27-0 shutout of the San Diego State Aztecs by the Ohio Bobcats in the DXL Frisco Bowl on Dec. 19. Thank goodness for Ohio.

Here is each conference’s bowl record during the 2018 bowl season, including the Independents.
2018-2019 Conference Bowl Records (Last updated after the Outback Bowl)

  • American: 2-5
  • ACC: 5-5*
  • Big Ten: 5-4
  • Big 12: 3-3
  • Conference USA: 4-2
  • Independents: 2-1
  • MAC: 1-5
  • Mountain West: 3-2*
  • Pac-12: 3-4
  • SEC 6-4
  • Sun Belt: 3-2

Texas A&M routs N.C. State 52-13 in Gator Bowl (greensboro.com; AP)

Little went right for N.C. State's football team in its 52-13 loss to Texas A&M on Monday night in the Gator Bowl.
State was trying to get to double-digits wins for the second time in school history. State finished with 273 yards and went 0-for-13 on third down.

"It's on all of us," Coach Dave Doeren said. "It's not the players' fault. It's not the coaches' fault. It's all of our faults, and we own it that way. Bottom line is they played better than we did. They coached better than we did, and I'll own that."

Ryan Finley, a senior playing his final game, completed 19 of 32 passes for 139 yards. He threw a touchdown passes and two interceptions. Tyrel Dodson returned one of the picks 78 yards for a score early in the third quarter, a play that turned a close game into a two-touchdown advantage.
Finley also was sacked twice before getting pulled in the fourth quarter. Doeren clearly wanted to protect Finley, who's expected to be an early round pick in the NFL draft in April.

NC State wide receiver Jakobi Meyers is headed to the NFL (backingthepack.com; Muma)

There’s some weird things you remember in recruiting sometimes, and I remember NC State offering late this quarterback named Jakobi Meyers, who had been committed to Kent State. Kid was super talented. He never ended up being a quarterback, but he found his niche. Or so I’ve heard.

It’s not easy to overstate how much Jakobi Meyers has meant to the resurgence here; he’s been a significant and necessary part of NC State’s resurgent passing game, capable of huge games. Jakobi is going pro and we’re gonna miss him:

“I came to NC State a kid chasing two dreams,” said Meyers, who earned his degree in sports management with a minor in business administration last month. “I’m leaving a man with one dream fulfilled and hopefully another on the way. I would like to thank Coach Doeren, Coach McDonald, my teammates and all the staff here at NC State for helping me get to this position.”

Meyers has earned this shot, and there’s no reason for him to come back to college and play for free. There’s rarely any reason to do that, honestly.

I’m going to miss Jakobi as much as I’ve missed Jaylen Samuels this past year—there was no more sure, no more certain a receiver than Jakobi Meyers. Whatever NFL team gets him will be lucky.

Dabo Swinney fulfills promise with Clemson's best decade (beatricedailysun.com; AP)

Dabo Swinney had no doubt Clemson was headed in the right direction to be a national power again. He just wasn't sure he would be around to be part of it after the 2010 regular season ended with a three-touchdown home loss to an instate rival.
When Swinney got to his office with the Tigers at 6-6 after that South Carolina game, there waited the athletic director who had surprisingly named him interim coach in October 2008 before hiring him as head coach at the end of that season.
"Well, we did the best we could. It was a quick ride," Swinney recalled thinking before walking into the room. "I literally didn't know if he was going to say hey, we have to make a change or whatever."

But then-Clemson AD Terry Don Phillips was there to reinforce his belief in Swinney, not fire him. And Swinney soon after publicly declared that the Tigers would have their winningest decade ever by time 2020 arrived.
Swinney and the No. 2 Tigers (14-0) already have, even before they play in their third national championship game in four seasons next Monday night against top-ranked Alabama (14-0). And there is still another full season to play after that, with the expectation of yet another title chance, before the calendar flips to 2020.

Links, news and rumors - 1/2/19

Syracuse runs WVU head coach right out of Morgantown
Of course, there may been other factors in Dana Holgorsen's decision to resign from West Virginia and take the same job at Houston of the AAC... but I'm going with the Camping Bowl loss. If you want to read about those other reasons, check out "Why Dana Holgorsen is leaving West Virginia for Houston" on SBNation.
__________

Temple Buyout Fund?
Speaking of head coaches, Temple still doesn't have one after Georgia Tech hired away Geoff Collins, then Miami hired Manny Diaz back... but the Owls should have the money to get a coach of their liking after all of the buyout money is collected ($2.5 million from GT, $4.0 million more from Miami).

ACC Football Rx: 2019 Reputation Games (RX;HM)

Conference games are for conference championships; non-conference games are for national championships (and the overall reputation of the conference). Which games will set the tone in 2019? Here are my picks for the 2019 ACC "Reputation Games"...

Week 1
Florida vs. Miami (Orlando) - Canes need to come out swinging.
S Carolina vs N Carolina (Charlotte) - First test for Big Mack
FSU vs. Boise State (Jacksonville) - could Taggart withstand a loss here?
Notre Dame at Louisville (Labor Day night) - just don't get blown out!

Week 2
Texas A&M at Clemson - Tigers can punch their playoff ticket
Syracuse at Maryland - REVENGE GAME! important for the Orange to win this one.
USF at Georgia Tech - REVENGE GAME!
ODU at Virginia Tech - REVENGE GAME! (I'm sensing a theme here)

Week 3
Notre Dame at Georgia - OK, not an ACC game, but important for SoS reasons
Pitt at Penn State - could be the Panthers last shot at the Nittany Lions for awhile
NC State at W Virginia - the follow up to the game that never was.

Week 4
Virginia at Notre Dame - Wahoos came so close last time
UCF at Pitt - another REVENGE GAME!

ACC Football Rx: 2018 Military and Sun Bowl Results (RX; HM)

The Military Bowl (Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati) and the Sun Bowl (Pitt vs. Stanford) had a lot in common:
- the ACC team was the underdog
- the ACC team led much of the game, including the last few minutes
- the ACC team surrendered a late touchdown
- the ACC team lost.

Final scores:

Virginia Tech 31
Cincinnati 35

Pitt 13
Stanford 14

Both VT and Pitt had game management issues which cost them... that's on the coaches.

I don't have time to go into it in depth right now, but I plan to revisit these games later, with a focus on how a few different decisions by the coaches could have changed the outcome...

ACC Football Rx: 2018-19 CFP Championship Odds (RX; HM)

National Championship Odds: Alabama almost touchdown favorite vs. Clemson*
BetDSI opened the Alabama Crimson Tide as a 6.5-point favorite versus the Clemson Tigers in the CFP National Championship Game. The game's over/under is 61.

This matchup marks the first time since 2011 that two undefeated teams are playing for the national championship. It is also the first time in FBS history two 14-0 teams will square off.

Wiedmer: Bowls prove that ACC and SEC are more than Clemson and Bama (timesfreepress.com; Wiedmer)

As these words are being written, the Sugar Bowl between Georgia and Texas has yet to begin. So whether the Southeastern Conference's 11 bowl teams finish with a 7-4 mark or a 6-5 record won't be known until after this column is due. (Silly deadlines.)
But regardless of whether the Bulldogs win or lose against the Longhorns, the SEC has acquitted itself pretty well overall during this bowl season. Alabama, Auburn, Florida and Texas A&M all won easily. Kentucky and LSU proved toughest when it mattered most. And among the losers, only South Carolina looked as if it would rather have been anywhere but the Belk Bowl during its listless 28-0 loss to Virginia.

So what have we learned as we await Monday night's College Football Playoff title game between top-ranked and defending national champ Alabama and No. 2 Clemson?

For one thing, all those points the Big 12 teams score against each other during the regular season may be more a testament to their offensive brilliance than a general aversion to defense.

After all, a Vanderbilt defense that had held four of its previous 12 opponents to 14 or fewer points and had fallen only 22-17 at Notre Dame — which reached the CFP unbeaten — gave up 45 to Baylor in the Commodores' seven-point Texas Bowl loss.

"Then there was the Atlantic Coast Conference, which not only had Clemson humble Notre Dame 30-3 in the Cotton Bowl but also had Virginia embarrass the Gamecocks and Duke crush Temple 56-27 in the Independence Bowl. Of course, it also had North Carolina State blasted 52-13 by SEC member Texas A&M in the Gator Bowl."
He swept Wake Forest's win over Memphis under the rug, and I feel like there was a 5th ACC bowl win... I think it was over a Big XII team... gee, I just can't remember who it was... can anyone help me out?

All the bowl winners, ranked by incoming preseason hype

Syracuse and Northwestern are under-the-radar names that closed strong. Cuse coach Dino Babers is a media darling, and Northwestern will pair continuity after a strong 2018 campaign. Oh, and they have a Clemson transfer in QB Hunter Johnson to start under center, so a better offense isn’t out of the question.
Both also have their share of media graduates, so they’re on the radar of many of my colleagues when preseason chatter gets going.
