Welcome to National Joy Germ Day!

On January 8, 1981, Joan E. White of Syracuse, New York, was reading the newspaper when she came across a story about a California couple who offered to worry for others in exchange for a fee. White believed this approach to facing the world's problems was flawed and decided to create an organization to counteract the worriers. She founded Joygerms Unlimited and designated January 8 as Joygerm Day, on what also happened to be her late mother Nora's birthday.

The goal of the day is to "smile, hug, grin, and win over at least one grumpy grouch." It is a day to spread cheer through "germs of joy." It is a time for positivity, optimism, smiles, and kindness to everyone that one comes into contact with. Some celebrants, often members of Joygerms Unlimited, have gone to nursing homes and hospitals to spread cheer. Parades have also been held on the day. It is not seen as a day to ignore life's problems, but rather, a day to rise above them.

Tigers roll Tide! Clemson captures national championship, caps perfect season (newsobserver.com; Connolly)

“I felt like we had the better team. I felt like our leadership, our will to win, I could just sense it,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. “Our guys made plays. We came in with the mindset that we were going to attack and we did the whole night.”

Freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence passed for 347 yards and three touchdowns in the blowout victory, finding his favorite target on the evening Justyn Ross six times for 153 yards and a score.

Lawrence and Ross put on a show in the third quarter as Lawrence made big time throw after big time throw to the Alabama native Ross, who hauled in circus catches with defenders draped all over him.

Ross had four catches for 129 yards in the third quarter alone, including a pair of one-handed catches for big gains.

“The moment we recruited him, we knew he’d be a tough match up not just for Alabama, for anybody we played. But what a night,” Swinney said. “These last five games he has been unbelievable. The catches that you saw him make tonight, those are routine for him. I mean, it’s just amazing. I told Trevor, I said, could you quit throwing crappy balls so he don’t have to show off like that and make some of those crazy catches? But that’s what he can do.”

With Trevor Lawrence and more, Clemson will remain among the elite in 2019 (usatoday.com; Myerberg)

The combination of coaching, quarterback Trevor Lawrence, a highly gifted collection of skill talent and an uncertain Atlantic Coast Conference makes Clemson a top contender to once again reach the College Football Playoff for the 2019 season.

Once again, the Tigers' talented crop of assistant coaches will remain the fold. In defensive coordinator Brent Venables and co-offensive coordinators Jeff Scott and Tony Elliott, Clemson has been able to build and maintain matching schemes that have propelled the Tigers into the upper echelon of the Bowl Subdivision.

On offense, the greatest reason for optimism stems from Lawrence, who as a true freshman led the Tigers to another ACC championship and was dominant against Alabama in the national title game. He'll begin his sophomore season as one of the top contenders for the Heisman Trophy.

"The sky is the limit and the offense can expand and do more things," quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter said.

Joining Lawrence on offense will be running back Travis Etienne, himself a top Heisman contender entering his junior season, and a slew of underclassmen at wide receiver. Leading the way in the passing game is junior-to-be Tee Higgins and rising sophomore Justyn Ross, who had a breakout performance in the Cotton Bowl win against Notre Dame.

Trevor Lawrence, Trayvon Mullen earn MVP honors as Clemson blows out Alabama (hearaldsun.com; Hadley)

In a matchup of superstar young quarterbacks in the College Football Playoff national championship, Clemson freshman Trevor Lawrence trounced Alabama sophomore Tua Tagovailoa — and in doing so, succeeded him as the game’s offensive MVP.

Lawrence orchestrated the Tigers’ 44-16 blowout win over the Crimson Tide with three passing touchdowns, no interceptions and 347 yards on 20-of-32 passing. He also rushed the ball six times for 27 yards.

He is the third quarterback in a row to win the offensive MVP award and just the second true freshman to start and win a national championship game.

Junior defensive back Trayvon Mullen, who intercepted a pass and returned it 46 yards early in the game, was named the defensive MVP. He also tallied six tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.

Can Syracuse Beat Clemson Next Year? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)

The Clemson Tigers are 2018 College Football champions. After steamrolling Alabama on Monday night, the Tigers are already looking ahead to what could be another 15-0 season.

Syracuse hosts Clemson in the Carrier Dome this fall. Do they have a shot to beat them? Well, that depends on a few things.

First things first, when are they going to play? Timing will play a significant role in determining the magnitude of the matchup. An early-season tilt would almost guarantee a high-stakes game. On the other hand, a late-season matchup could be meaningless if SU drops a couple of games early in its schedule. In my mind, that would almost guarantee a Clemson win.

Clemson-Syracuse. Week 2 this season. Bring @CollegeGameDay with you, ESPN. Get on that, Wildhack.

@BrentAxeMedia
Ok, slight correction. It’d have to be Week 3. That’s the open slot right now. SU plays Liberty Week 1 (Aug.31) and Maryland Week 2 (Sept.7) but same idea. Would love to see that be the early ACC game.

11:11 PM - Jan 7, 2019

There is, however, an opportunity for the teams to meet in September.

The Orange open the 2019 season on the road against Liberty, followed by another road trip to Maryland (two programs with first year head coaches). After that, there’s a week three opening where Syracuse will most likely host a conference foe. A matchup between the two best teams in the Atlantic division from 2018 in that slot would certainly make sense.

A win over the Tigers would put the Orange in the drivers seat to make it to the ACC Championship game. Clemson returns nearly everyone on offense, making that a tall task for Syracuse. I’ve always been the first person to say it could happen again. But after watching the Tigers destroy Nick Saban and the Tide, I’m not so sure.

New College Football 2019 Preseason Top 25 Poll Released (thespun.cm; Holleran)

...
20. Missouri: 44
Florida and Georgia are the more traditional names picked to win the SEC East, but the Tigers could be a great dark-horse candidate with arguably that division's most explosive offense -- even with the departure of QB Drew Lock. Kelly Bryant landed in Missouri after transferring from Clemson, and he should have plenty of weapons at his disposal on offense.

21. Auburn: 31
After an uncharacteristically poor season offensively in 2018 (Auburn ranked 78th in total offense), the Tigers will have plenty of opportunities for rebirth in 2019. Former Baylor QB Jarrett Stidham announced his decision to leave early for the NFL draft, and Gus Malzahn will return to his offensive roots and reclaim play-calling duties this fall.

22. Washington State: 28
The Cougars will need to replace QB Gardner Minshew, who put up video game-like numbers in 2018. One of Minshew's top weapons, do-everything RB James Williams, is leaving early for the NFL. But Mike Leach has shown his system can still thrive as stars come and go. One name to remember: RB Max Borghi, who could end up being Leach's most productive RB ever.

t-23. Northwestern: 21
Missouri isn't the only school in our top 25 that will be aided by a Clemson transfer QB. The Wildcats are also gaining help from Clemson, this in the form of transfer Hunter Johnson, one of the 2017 class' top-ranked recruits. He'll replace multi-year starter Clayton Thorson at QB. Northwestern can be a factor in a Big Ten West division loaded with good teams but absent of great ones.

t-23. Syracuse: 21
Dino Babers inherited a 4-8 Syracuse team and turned the Orange into a 10-win squad in just three years. Now we'll see what he can do with a QB not named Eric Dungey -- who served as a four-year starter and was a mainstay under Babers. Tommy DeVito, who looked good when called to action this fall and has more of the pass-first mentality Babers favors -- looks like the next-man up.

25. Army: 20
Army's early season battle with Oklahoma that ultimately went into OT looked like less and less of a fluke as the season went on and the Black Knights continued to shine. In fact, Army's Week 4 loss to Oklahoma ended up being its last loss of the season, closing with nine straight wins en route to an 11-2 record. Its Week 2 trip to Ann Arbor next fall is worth circling on your calendar.

Others receiving votes: Virginia Tech (18), Fresno State (12), Mississippi State (12), TCU (11), Nebraska (9), Arizona State (5), Florida State (4), Houston (4), Kentucky (4), USC (4), Baylor (3), NC State (2), Virginia (1)

Clemson's National Championship Could Help Syracuse in 2019 (247sports.com; McCallister)

Clemson won its second national title in three years on Monday by knocking off Alabama in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game by the score of 44-16. The Tigers did to Alabama what no team has seemingly been able to do over the last several years. Completely dominate them on both sides of the ball to the point where they looked like a rather ordinary team. Of course, Alabama is not an ordinary team, but that is how dominant Clemson was Monday night.

That news is obviously good for the Atlantic Coast Conference. Any time the national champ is in your conference, it boosts overall conference prestige and increases the attractiveness of conference schools to potential recruits. More specifically though, the championship could have larger ramifications for Syracuse next season.

In 2018, Syracuse had a resurgence with a 10-3 season that crescendoed with a 34-18 Camping World Bowl win over West Virginia. It was a tremendous season for the Orange, who were actually two plays away from being 12-1 and perhaps crashing the College Football Playoff party themselves. Alas, that was not quite on the docket. Still, Syracuse went toe to toe with that championship Clemson squad, falling 27-23 after the Tigers converted a fourth and six before scoring the game winning touchdown with 41 seconds left.

Syracuse Football: Zaire Franklin, Indianapolis Colts move on in playoffs (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Former Syracuse football standout Zaire Franklin and the Indianapolis Colts are headed to next round of the NFL playoffs after their thrilling wildcard win.
WHOSE HOUSE?

No one is more familiar with upsets then former Syracuse football star Zaire Franklin. Zaire was a key part of one of the biggest upsets in recent college football history when the Syracuse Orange on Friday October 13th, 2017 beat the (at the time) defending National Champion, Clemson Tigers.

It seems that Zaire has brought what he has learned from Dino Babers and delivered it to his new team, the Indianapolis Colts.

The No. 6 seeded Colts made the playoffs by the smallest hair on their chinny chin chin and their margin for error was razor slim. After starting the season 1-5, the Colts went 9-1 down the stretch and became the third team in league history to make the postseason after that initial deficit.

Syracuse University Sends Two Veterans to the Camping World Bowl - Institute for Veterans and Military Families (ivmf.syracuse.edu)

As part of the University’s enduring commitment to veterans and the military community, the Office of Veteran and Military Affairs (OVMA) and the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) partnered with athletic donors Ted Lachowicz ’72 and Cliff Ensley ’69, ’70, G’71 to provide more than 400 veterans and military families with free tickets to the Camping World Bowl in Orlando, Florida, on Dec. 28.

In addition to the donated tickets, Syracuse Athletics, the OVMA and IVMF also hosted a special “Cuse for Troops” contest encouraging veterans to share their Orange pride on Twitter for a chance to win free tickets and travel to the Camping World Bowl. Brady Hallahan, a Syracuse University student and U.S. Navy veteran, and Nick Prietti, a Syracuse-area U.S. Army veteran were selected as the contest winners.

Listen To What Clemson Fans Chanted At The End Of National Title Game (thespun.com; Hladik)

Clemson just finished wrapping up a thorough 44-16 beatdown of Alabama in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. It is the worst loss for Alabama in two decades and by far the worst in the Nick Saban era.

We’ve seen Clemson take down Alabama in the championship game two times in the last three seasons. The Tigers are a legitimate powerhouse, bordering on a dynasty.

As tonight’s game came to a close, Clemson fans in attendance took some time to troll the SEC some. They mocked the “S-E-C” chants.

In the final seconds of the game, Clemson fans chanted “A-C-C” as they drank in the victory.

ODU takes jab at Hokies in proposal (nbcsports.com; Regan)

The big news in local college football on Thursday was Old Dominion’s Board of Visitors approval of a $55 million football stadium. And the Monarchs certainly have high hopes for their team once they get there.

With a capacity of 22,130, the new stadium would still remain rather small. It will be the fourth-smallest stadium in Conference USA and smaller than FCS schools Norfolk State and James Madison, but it is who they intend to beat that will interest Virginia Tech fans.

As part of the proposal to the Board of Visitors, several artist renderings of the new stadium were presented.

Take a closer look at the scoreboard in the background. You'll notice a familiar logo on the right side.

Yes, that is Virginia Tech's logo. You should also note that the score was not left blank. The scoreboard reads 35-24 in favor of ODU. Jab. Jab.

So not only is ODU planning to expand its stadium, the Monarchs also appear to be poking at the Hokies. It may take a long time before they can make this a reality, however.

Virginia Tech and ODU meet in 2017 in Blacksburg. The first game between the two at ODU is in 2018, but the new stadium is not expected to open until 2019. The first time the Hokies will face the Monarchs in the new stadium won't be until 2022.

Mark your calendars.

Louisville football confirms hire of Mark Ivey as defensive line coach (couerier-journal.com; Lourim)

The Louisville football program confirmed an expected coaching hire Monday, announcing Mark Ivey as Scott Satterfield's new defensive line coach.

Ivey was Satterfield's defensive line coach at Appalachian State and has extensive experience both there and on the Florida high school scene.

After he played linebacker and defensive line at Appalachian State from 1991-95 — the same years as Satterfield — Ivey coached high school football in southwest Florida for 16 years. He was an assistant coach at Port Charlotte, Cape Coral and Gulf Coast, and then the head coach at Cypress Lakes and then Barron Collier, all in the Fort Myers/Cape Coral/Naples area.

Ivey coached at Appalachian State for seven years, working with outside linebackers for two and then defensive line for five. He returned to Appalachian State from southwest Florida the same year Satterfield did from Florida International, in 2012. Satterfield kept his former teammate on staff when he became head coach in 2013.

After Satterfield took the Louisville job last month, Ivey became Appalachian State's interim head coach for the New Orleans Bowl, which the Mountaineers won against Middle Tennessee, 45-13.

ACC Football 2018: Best and worst from bowl season (chopchat.com; Parker)

The bowl portion of the 2018 ACC football season is almost in the books and we break down what went right and what went wrong for the conference.

When the bowl games were announced to conclude the 2018 season, the ACC football powers at be probably felt good about what was going to take place – with several games that looked like the Power Five league was going to have a clear advantage over their foes.

Alabama never looked so helpless or desperate under Nick Saban

What finished was a .500 season in bowl competition that showed why the conference has plenty of good things ahead for them – as well as quite a lot that will need to be worked on if they ever want to get back to being considered one of the better power conferences.

Of course, all of the fortunes of the ACC football world could change if Clemson is able to do their job Monday and bring home the third title for the conference in the last six seasons.

Here’s a look at both the best and worst to take place this bowl season involving the Power Five league and what took look forward to the most during the rest of the postseason – and maybe an early look at 2019.

Clemson dominates Notre Dame to advance to fourth title game for ACC football in last six seasons
In a game that had some people wondering if the “Fighting” Irish were going to be able to pull off a potential Cotton Bowl upset, this one was over rather quickly as Clemson looked like one of the best two teams in the game – and shook off questions about them being overrated based off playing in a weaker ACC this season.

Wake Forest gets over .500 with upset victory over Memphis
Coming into the game, I will admit that I had no hope that the Demon Deacons would get a victory over a team with the offense that the Tigers have – but the men from the ACC Atlantic Division did just enough to leave the Birmingham Bowl with a win and some momentum heading into 2019.

Virginia and Syracuse look powerful against Power Five foes to get bowl wins
Both teams in orange and blue made arguments for being among the teams that can compete with Clemson next season after the Cavaliers shut out the SEC’s South Carolina Gamecocks and the Orange came out on top over the Big 12’s West Virginia Mountaineers in the Camping World Bowl.

Hokies add Rhode Island to 2019 football schedule, will open against ACC foe (pilotonline.com; Wood)

Seeking to replace a void on next season’s football schedule created when East Carolina was dropped, Virginia Tech filled the available slot Monday with Rhode Island, and the Hokies will open the season against an ACC opponent.

While the addition of Rhode Island for an Oct. 12 meeting in Lane Stadium gives Tech seven home games next season, it also assures the Hokies will play an extremely soft schedule, with two games against Football Championship Subdivision opponents.

Tech is also scheduled to host Furman, another FCS program, in a game that was originally scheduled for Aug. 31, but now has been moved to Sept. 21, according to a graphic released from Tech's athletic department. Tech will open Aug. 31 against an ACC opponent, possibly at Boston College.

Rare Week 1 for ACC football will include Hokies, U.Va. (dailypress.com; Teel)

With Virginia and Virginia Tech central players, the ACC appears set to schedule three league games to kick off the 2019 football season, enhancing its new cable channel and complementing several marquee non-conference matchups.

The Cavaliers likely will open at Pittsburgh, the Hokies at Boston College.

Moreover, Week 1 would include no games against Championship Subdivision opponents, affirming ACC commissioner John Swofford’s determination to make the opening weekend more attractive to spectators and television viewers.

The ACC hasn’t started a season with three conference matchups since 1996. At least one league team has opened versus an FCS opponent in each of the last 13 years.

The league and television partner ESPN announced in November that the long-anticipated ACC Network will launch Thursday, Aug. 22, with the channel’s first football telecast featuring Georgia Tech at Clemson one week later.

Two additional Week 1 conference games would allow the ACC to play one each on Friday and Saturday, or both Saturday. ACC officials will unveil the 2019 schedule in the next few weeks.

Virginia, Pitt and Boston College’s non-conference schedules have long accommodated a Week 1 league game — all three play their first non-conference contest in Week 2. The hold-up was Virginia Tech, which was booked to open Aug. 31 at home against Furman.

But in announcing Monday that they have added Rhode Island to their 2019 schedule, the Hokies also revealed that the Furman game has been moved to Sept. 14.

With four available teams, and since Virginia does not play Boston College next season, the ACC in Week 1 could pair U.Va. against Pitt, and Virginia Tech versus BC, or the Cavaliers against the Hokies, and the Eagles versus the Panthers.

Three From ACC Schools Elected To College Football Hall of Fame (theacc.com)

The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced Monday the 2019 College Football Hall of Fame Class, which includes two players and a coach with ties to the Atlantic Coast Conference. Florida State defensive back Terrell Buckley and NC State wide receiver Torry Holt were named to the 2019 class and will be joined by former Miami head coach Dennis Erickson.

The 15 total inductees (13 players and two head coaches) were selected from the national ballot of 76 All-America players and six elite coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision and the 100 players and 32 coaches from the divisional ranks.

ACC Football Rx: Final 2018-19 P5 Postseason Records (RX; HM)

Here's how the post-season ended up for the power conferences:

ConfererenceW-LWin%

Big XII
4-357%

Big Ten
5-456%

ACC
6-555%

SEC
6-650%

Pac-12
3-443%

It all came down to the national championship game. By beating Alabama, Clemson put the ACC on the winning side of .500 while simultaneously sending the SEC back to .500. Also, while two conferences had better post-season win% than the ACC, nobody had more total wins.

This is well-earned by some Clemson fans at the game...

SEC/ACC/ESPN = Monopoly& Anti Trust? (elevenwarrioers.com; Bob)

As the B1G becomes completely irrelevant, the tears begin...

With The SEC deal with ESPN and upcoming deal with the ACC along with controling the CFP and being allowed to hold the monopoly on airing the games, how is this not anti trust? Why do the other networks not get a chance to rotate the television of the playoff and championship games? This controls recruiting and gives the SEC and then the ACC an unfair advantage in recruiting. IMHO if ESPN is going to air the games they should have to give up rights to the SEC network. This is not good for the other 120 or so teams in College Football! How long before there is a court case?

See inside Norm Swanson’s large expansion of popular Salmon River resort (photos) (PS; Moriarty)

Syracuse hotelier Norm Swanson has doubled the size of Tailwater Lodge, the former elementary school that he has turned into a Salmon River resort.

Swanson recently added 46 rooms to the lodge in the Oswego County hamlet of Altmar, bringing the total to 88. He’s also added an indoor pool, a fitness center, a game room and an outdoor hot tub, and he’s in the process of building a spa with a second outdoor hot tub.

The new rooms, fitness center, pool, game room and first outdoor hot tub are scheduled to open in a couple of weeks. The spa with the second outdoor hot tub will open in late April.

This is the second expansion of the lodge since it opened in 2014 with 42 rooms. Swanson added an 8,000-square-foot conference center and wedding facility, named “The Barn” and featuring big hand-hewn logs from Colorado, in 2015.

Located at the former Altmar Elementary School on Pulaski Street, 40 miles north of Syracuse, the property has 2,000 feet of frontage on the Salmon River.

Tailwater Lodge started out as a hotel for people visiting the area to fish and enjoy the area’s many other outdoor sports, including snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. But it quickly became a popular wedding venue and now hosts 100 of them a year, said Thomas Fernandez, chief operating officer of Swanson’s Woodbine Group.

Which tears taste sweeter?

I think I'll need to sip on them both for awhile before I can decide - they both taste SO GOOD! ;)
