WinnieThePoohDay.jpg

Welcome to Winnie the Pooh Day!

Winnie the Pooh Day is celebrated on the birthday of A.A. Milne, the English author who created the popular children's character, Winnie the Pooh. The name "Winnie-the-Pooh" first appeared in a story called "The Wrong Sort of Bees," on Christmas Eve in 1925, in The Evening News. The following year, Milne published a volume of stories about Pooh, simply titled Winnie-the-Pooh. He followed this in 1928 with The House at Pooh Corner.
A black bear named Winnie—short for Winnipeg, as she had come from Canada—was an inspiration for the character. Winnie had resided at the London Zoo, and Milne's son, Christopher Robin Milne, liked to visit her; he even had the opportunity to feed her honey. Christopher named his own teddy bear Winnie the Pooh, after the real-life Winnie, as well as after a swan named Pooh, that the Milne's had seen while on vacation. Christopher's bear actually had originally been named Edward, and had been purchased at Harrods in London.

5 ways Syracuse football can set itself up for success this offseason (PS; Bailey)

...
Land a graduate transfer offensive tackle
One of the two glaring personnel questions looking at the Orange's projected depth chart is how it will replace starting offensive tackles Cody Conway and Koda Martin.

The team returns three linemen with starting experience in Airon Servais, Evan Adams and Sam Heckel. There are intriguing options waiting to compete including Dakota Davis and Patrick Davis, as well as junior college signee Darius Tisdale.
But the easiest solution here, as Babers himself hinted at during an interview before the Camping World Bowl, would be to land a graduate transfer offensive tackle.

"We could be looking for a fantastic transfer offensive tackle, somebody that could keep a lot of guys in their own spots," Babers said. "We'll just have to see how it all fits with the back half of recruiting and what we can acquire. And how it all looks when we start spring ball."

Adding an offensive tackle, like Martin last cycle, would allow limited, natural movement among the returners. One possible configuration would be sliding the 6-foot-6 Servais from center to tackle, where he practiced last spring and as a true freshman. Heckel would start at center, a role he held in 2016, while Adams would stick at guard.
Then plug in Dakota Davis at the other guard spot and, while there would a learning curve, you've got a unit with manageable youth.

Orange Watch: Sept. game with national champion Clemson highlights 2019 Syracuse football schedule - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Where does Syracuse football go from a return to national relevance, a No. 15 final A.P. ranking, a bowl game victory and a ton of postseason accolades? Well, literally, it will be to Lynchburg, Va. on Aug. 31 to meet FBS relative newcomer Liberty in the season opener, exactly one year to the day that the 2018 season started with a bang in Kalamazoo, Mich. beating Western Michigan.
Here’s a capsule look at some of the elements that jumped out to us about the 2019 schedule:

*Syracuse meets Liberty for the first time ever in a 2-for-1 deal, the game in Lynchburg then two in the Dome the next two seasons. The Flames welcome first year head coach Hugh Freeze formally of Ole Miss.

*Another new coach will be on the sideline the following week when the Orange travels to Maryland. Mike Locksley left Alabama to try and rebuild the Terrapins program after the disastrous tenure of D.J. Durkin. It will be the first time SU will open with two true road games since 2010.

*Will the Clemson home game be at night and with the ESPN Game Day crew on campus for the first time covering a football game?
*The N.C. State road game (Oct. 10) and the Pittsburgh home game (Oct. 18) are on Thursday and Friday nights, respectively. Exactly the kind of singular exposure that has helped promote the program’s resurgence.

Chances SU/Clemson Gets GameDay – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Leonard)

The conference portion of the Syracuse football schedule was released in its entirety with dates Wednesday afternoon. There’s a lot to evaluate.

IT'S HERE
Syracuse's 2019 schedule

Help us Defend Our House again: https://t.co/GqDSCoTfm0pic.twitter.com/fd3MkZPdZP
— Syracuse Football (@CuseFootball) January 16, 2019

The game that stands out is Clemson. We knew the defending national champions were coming but now we know they’re coming for the ACC opener on September 14th. The third week of the season.

This confirms something: College GameDay is also coming.
It’s gotta be a lock. How could it not be?

For starters, both teams will likely be 2-0. Syracuse is on the road at Maryland the week before. That’s no cake walk at all. The Terps hired former Alabama OC Mike Locksley as their new head coach. We did find out earlier in the week, quarterback Jalen Hurts is not joining his OC and is instead transferring to Oklahoma. However, this is still a decent power-five team on the road. Syracuse will likely be favored but it’s no lock.

Clemson also has a pretty tough week two game. They host Texas A&M and Jimbo Fisher. The Aggies head to South Carolina a week after the Tigers open their season on a Thursday night against Georgia Tech in Death Valley. Two pretty solid teams, but two home teams and after all they are Clemson. They should be 2-0.
Outside of the fact the game will be two ranked teams dueling for a chance to determine who gets the upper hand in the ACC Atlantic division, this game is going to draw a huge crowd. If it’s not sold out, then I don’t really know what is needed to bring a sell out.

Syracuse Football Schedule: 2019 Analysis (CFN; Fiutak)

2019 Syracuse Orange Football Schedule Analysis
– The Orange open up the season dealing with Hugh Freeze and Liberty on the road, and follow it up with a dangerously fun game at Maryland. The Western Michigan game shouldn’t be too much of a problem, and neither should the battle with Holy Cross to close out September. However …
– In between the non-conference games is the Atlantic showdown against Clemson in the Carrier Dome. The NC State, Louisville and Florida State games are on the road, but Boston College and Wake Forest go to Syracuse. All things considered, it’s not that bad an Atlantic slate.
– The Orange miss Miami and Virginia Tech from the Coastal. Pitt is a home game and the date at Duke comes after getting a week off. Overall, there’s a run of three road games in four dates in the second half of the season, but that week off breaks things up.

Syracuse Football 2019 Schedule (1045theteam.com; Goz)

The marquee game on this year's schedule is the Saturday September 14th match up with the Clemson Tigers. The Tigers will enter the Carrier Dome as the defending national champions. In 2018, the Orange were a fourth down stop away from beating Clemson.

During the 2017 season, Clemson lost to Syracuse on a Friday night in the Carrier Dome, 27-24.

Many people on the internet have suggested the September 14th could be a potential landing spot for ESPN's College Gameday show. Syracuse is one of the few Power five schools that has never hosted the show.
Should College Gameday broadcast from Syracuse on September 14th? Let us know below.

Ranking Syracuse's 2019 Schedule From Easiest to Most Difficult (247sports.com; McAllister)

Looking at each game of the schedule, let's rank them from most difficult to easiest.

HOLY CROSS
Syracuse's FCS game in 2019 comes against Holy Cross. The Crusaders went 5-6 last season at the FCS level. Their only FBS matchup was against Boston College, where they lost 62-14. Syracuse should cruise to victory in a week five matchup.

AT LIBERTY
For the second year in a row, Syracuse opens on the road. Last season's game at Western Michigan was more difficult than this should be, however. Liberty went 6-6 last season, their first at the FBS level. Their games against power five level teams did not go well, as they were blown out by Virginia and Auburn. They also suffered blowout losses to Army and North Texas. Syracuse will be the vastly more talented team and should win this one handily.

WESTERN MICHIGAN
Syracuse dominated Western Michigan last season on the road. This year, they get the Broncos at home. While Western Michigan will certainly play with some energy as their head coach and former Orange offensive coordinator Tim Lester returns to the Dome, this is a game Syracuse should win.

Five takeways from the 2019 ACC football schedule (dailyprogress.com; Shifflett)

Here are five takeaways from the 2019 ACC football slate.

Network debut
The aforementioned ACC Network will launch on Aug. 22, beginning a new era in the conference. The new network, which will be owned and operated by ESPN in partnership with the ACC, is expected to broadcast around 1,300 live events annually across its TV and digital platforms.

“We continue to look ahead to the launch of the ACC Network with great anticipation,” ACC Commissioner John Swofford said when the network launch date was announced. “Showcasing all of our outstanding programs remains a top priority, and our partnership with ESPN allows fans to have greater access than ever before. I also commend our schools who have done an outstanding job in their preparations for a successful launch.”
One week after its launch, the ACC Network will air its first live college football game on Thursday, Aug. 29, when Clemson begins its national title defense by hosting Georgia Tech. While the Tigers look like the early favorites to repeat as national champions, the Yellow Jackets will be in the midst of major overhaul.

Geoff Collins will be making his head coaching debut with the Yellow Jackets. Collins, who was the head coach at Temple for two seasons prior to coming to Georgia Tech, will be updating the Yellow Jackets’ offense, which ran a triple option under former head coach Paul Johnson.

Big opening weekend
As has been the case each of the past few seasons, the ACC has several high-profile nonconference games during the first weekend of the season, including four neutral site matchups.

Why Mark Whipple's hiring makes sense for Pitt — and why it doesn't (post-gazette.com; Batko)

With Mark Whipple taking the reins of Pitt’s offense, we won’t truly know if Pat Narduzzi nailed this hire until we see how the Panthers offense adapts under its new coordinator.

But we can try to play Narduzzi’s yellow legal pad for the purpose of this exercise and list the pros and cons of hiring Whipple, who brings a reputation of being a whip-smart quarterback whisperer with plenty of NFL and college experience.

First, let’s take a shot at some reasons why hiring Whipple makes sense:

UMass offense percentage of passing plays:

2018, 53.22 (20th in FBS)
2017, 53.92, 21st
2016, 56.21, 12th
2015, 57.21, 5th
2014, 57.28, 14th

• His quarterback development piece is critical, and there might not be a position on the roster more in need of progress than the room led by junior-to-be Kenny Pickett. If Narduzzi pared down his list of candidates to coordinators who made a name for themselves by molding quarterbacks, Whipple is a perfectly logical fit. He comes highly regarded from none other than Ben Roethlisberger, in this regard, and also worked with Donovan McNabb as a Philadelphia Eagles offensive assistant. Then again, Shawn Watson had a very similar background, and his two years at Pitt were less than stellar.
• He has ties to important areas for the Panthers, namely Pittsburgh and South Florida. No, Whipple never coached college football here, but in three years with the Steelers, he surely made connections and built some relationships along the way. Familiarity is always a plus in the small world of sports in Western Pennsylvania. But Whipple also spent two seasons as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach/assistant head coach at Miami, “The U,” where he recruited the same hotbed high schools Narduzzi and his staff traffic in currently. If Pitt continues looking to that territory for offensive playmakers, Whipple might be able to help.

• From a philosophical standpoint, Whipple’s pro-style offenses match with what Narduzzi wants on that side of the ball. While Watson’s system produced results that were often painfully boring, Sun Bowl finale included, his predecessor Matt Canada showed that a team with a mostly traditional approach can still light up a scoreboard. Wholesale changes to the offensive scheme could have left a lot of questions up and down the roster personnel-wise, considering Narduzzi has been recruiting to fit a certain style the past four years.

• Stability still matters. Perhaps Narduzzi put too much emphasis on this point in hiring his friend and former coworker Watson, but nearly four decades into a successful football journey, Whipple isn’t likely to use Pitt as a stepping stone. He’s been a college head coach, he’s spent time at the next level, and he’s even been a coordinator at another major-conference program, so it might not be a surprise if Whipple, 61, views this as his last job.

Notre Dame Football: The ACC Must Really Want the Irish (slapthesign.com; Belden)

Wednesday, the Atlantic Coast Conference released its full conference schedule. Its attitude toward Notre Dame football seems pretty telling.

Notre Dame football has been adamant about its independence for as long as anyone can remember. In 2014, Notre Dame gave in–at least a little bit–to the ACC, agreeing to a partial membership in football. Notre Dame would play five ACC games per season, but keep its independence, its television contract, and all the advantages of being independent.

This year, however, it would seem that the ACC is trying to send a subtle hint as to what it really wants from the Notre Dame football program.

With a hat tip to Pete Sampson of The Athletic, it seems that the ACC isn’t too happy with the advantages Notre Dame enjoys as an independent. At least that’s how I interpret it.

The Irish play five ACC opponents in 2019–at Louisville, Virginia, Virginia Tech, at Duke, and Boston College. Of those five opponents, only one of them plays a game the week before facing Notre Dame. That distinction goes to Virginia, who hosts Old Dominion in Charlottesville on September 21st, one week before heading to South Bend to face the Irish.

Why the ACC chose to schedule it this way, I can’t exactly be sure. But I have my guesses. At the very least, it seems that this was no coincidence. And while the five ACC teams featured on the 2019 schedule don’t seem to pose much of a real threat to Notre Dame, there’s nothing like giving them an extra week to prepare just to make things more interesting, right?

Ex-Ohio State QB Tate Martell says he's transferring to Miami
Tight end Brevin Jordan and safety Bubba Bolden, both of whom attended Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas with Martell, were pictured in Martell's announcement tweet. Jordan attends Miami; Bolden said earlier this month that he will transfer from USC to Miami.

Martell redshirted his freshman season before backing up Dwayne Haskins in 2018, when he completed 23 passes for 269 yards and one touchdown while rushing for 128 yards and a pair of TDs. He will have three more years of eligibility and, unless granted a waiver, will have to sit out the 2019 season.

The road to the ACC Coastal division title now clearly goes through Miami (with all due respect to defending champion Pitt).

ACC Football Rx: Will Gameday come to Syracuse this year? (RX; HM)

From Syracuse.com Sports, where apparently it's never too early to start campaigning...

4 reasons why ESPN College GameDay will come to Syracuse-Clemson

Syracuse is one of 11 Power-Five schools to have never hosted the popular ESPN college football pregame show. The others? Cal, Duke, Illinois, Iowa State, Kansas, Maryland, Minnesota, Rutgers, Virginia and Wake Forest.

But there are several reasons why the Sept. 14 matchup against the defending national champion Clemson Tigers is the perfect opportunity for the show to check Central New York off its list.

1. HIGH STAKES AND 2 RANKED OPPONENTS
The Syracuse-Clemson matchup could feature two unbeaten teams in a game with major implications in the chase for the ACC Atlantic Division title...

2. OTHER WEEK 3 GAMES ARE LOW ON INTRIGUE
(The toughest competition might be from other ACC teams, as Pitt visits Penn State)
Pitt at Penn State
The long-time rivals will meet for the 100th time, and the series will go on hiatus after this game. Nostalgia will flow throughout Happy Valley, the game will be nationally televised, but Pitt likely won't be ranked, and, thus, GameDay will pass on this...

3. NO SHORTAGE OF CELEBRITY GUEST PICKERS
Biden? Boeheim? Brown? Little? Diggs? Costas? ...

4. IT HAS THE PERFECT SETTING
...There is large swath of green space on the Quad right in the heart of campus. The ESPN crew could set up there with Hendricks Chapel making for a picturesque background. The Ernie Davis statue is nearby, and overhead views of the Carrier Dome are within reach.

Not bad, but I think they missed the two biggest reasons:
5. SYRACUSE HAS NEVER HOSTED GAMEDAY
The show is always looking for a fresh place to go a few times each year. Why not Syracuse?

6. ACC NETWORK LAUNCH
The next big revenue stream for both the ACC and ESPN needs to be promoted; what better way that with Gameday at an ACC campus (and one which just happens to be a drivable distance from ESPN and ACC Network Headquarters)?

I'm game - let's do it!

The Kryss family: Sophie, Morris, Beatriz, Leo, Luiza and Naomi

The siblings make up a special rarity in families: quadruplets.
As it turned out, two of the quadruplet siblings—Luiza ’22 and Naomi ’22—decided to attend.
“We were looking at colleges, and we really liked Syracuse,” Naomi says. “All four of us are super close, but Luiza and I decided to come together, and we applied early decision to Syracuse.”
It was a stressful time, searching for colleges, trying to pick the right one and knowing it would be a change in their family life.
Both were accepted and then came for a visit. “If only one of us got accepted, it might have been different,” says Naomi, a studio arts major in the College of Visual and Performing Arts.
“We loved the campus; it was gorgeous,” says Luiza, a nutrition major in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. “I heard everyone here was a big community. I was looking for something like that, and I found Syracuse.”

The sisters live in the Brewster/Boland/Brockway complex, but one is in Boland and the other in Brewster.
“We didn’t want to room together, because we wanted to meet new people,” Luiza says, but “we’re always close because we’re in the same building.”

— TATE MARTELL (@TheTateMartell) January 16, 2019

Sisters, Part of Quadruplet Siblings, Acclimate to Life at Syracuse University (syr.edu)

When it came time to apply to colleges, the Kryss siblings each decided to try Syracuse University.
All four of them. At the same time.

Dad must have the bucks. That's a quarter million a year for the two girls! ;)
