Welcome to Curmudgeons Day!

A curmudgeon is a cantankerous, difficult, and bad-tempered person, who is usually also an old man. They are celebrated on Curmudgeons Day, which takes place on the birthday of W.C. Fields, a comedian and actor who was known for his curmudgeonly demeanor. On Curmudgeons Day, people act as curmudgeons, celebrate curmudgeons they know, and celebrate W.C. Fields.

W.C. Fields was born as William Claude Dukenfield on January 29, 1880, in Darby, Pennsylvania, just outside of Philadelphia. He took on his new name when he began working in vaudeville in 1898. Throughout his career, he was known for portraying anti-social and cantankerous characters in his stage and screen roles, and his real-life persona wasn't too far removed from this demeanor. He was also known for his affinity for alcohol, which ultimately had a hand in his declining health and eventual demise at the age of 66. Today he is often placed in the same class as comedic luminaries Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton.

Jason Munoz (right)

Miami football signee Jason Munoz released from NLI, signs with Syracuse (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

The Miami football program has released defensive lineman Jason Munoz from his National Letter of Intent. Munoz has promptly committed to ACC Rival Syracuse.

Jason Munoz’s decision to be released from his National Letter of Intent makes him the 17th player to de-commit from the Miami football program’s Surge ’19 recruiting class. His decision to sign with Syracuse drops Miami from 33rd in the 247 Sports Composite rankings to 36th.

Miami has signed two other defensive tackles as part of Surge ’19 and is bringing in a graduate transfer at the position for the second year in a row. Four-star DT Jason Blisset from New York, three-star Jalar Holley from Georgia and Graduate Transfer Chigozie Nnoruka have all signed or committed to Miami.

Munoz is a three-star strongside defensive end who Miami was reportedly expected to convert to defensive tackle. He is 6’3.5 276 pounds. Munoz is the 843 ranked player in the country, the 58th ranked strongside defensive end and the 109th ranked player in Florida in the Class or 2019.

Blissett is 6’3.5 271 pounds, the 296th ranked player overall in 2019, the 23rd ranked defensive tackle and the second-ranked player in New York. Comparing a ranking in New York and Florida in Football is comparing apples to oranges.

Miami releases early football signee Jason Munoz from contract as he commits to Syracuse (miamiherald.com; Degnan)

He signed with the Miami Hurricanes in December.

But now, defensive lineman Jason Munoz, out of Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas High, will be heading to the cold of Syracuse, N.Y., to play football at Syracuse University.

“Jason Munoz has been released from his NLI,’’ Miami athletics director of communications Camron Ghorbi confirmed to the Miami Herald regarding the contract— otherwise known as the National Letter of Intent — that Munoz signed in December to play football at Miami.

Munoz, a three-star recruit according to recruiting sites 247Sports, Rivals and ESPN, posted Monday evening on Twitter that he is committed to Syracuse University. The 247Sports site first cited sources in reporting that “he is coming to Syracuse as a defensive tackle’’ and “was able to get out of his National Letter of Intent.’’

Munoz was apparently released from his NLI because of the coaching changes involving former coach Mark Richt’s departure after he signed. Former defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, who had left to take the Temple head coaching job, then left Temple to come back to Miami as the new head coach.

“I had an amazing visit this weekend and I’m excited to say I’m committed to Syracuse University,’’ Munoz tweeted Monday. “Happy to be apart of the Cuse family. #blessed”

Munoz is believed to be the only signed commit who has been granted a release from his letter of intent. Miami’s other defensive line early signees were 6-4, 271-pound, four-star Jason Blissett Jr. from Queens, N.Y., out of Poly Prep; 6-4, 225-pound, consensus four-star Jahfari Harvey out of Vero Beach High; and 6-2, 280-pound, three-star Jalar Holley out of Buford High in Georgia.

Syracuse Football: SU picks up critical 2019 QB David Summers (itlh.com; Carey)

The Syracuse football squad got a critical pick up this week at the quarterback position. Here’s more on who David Summers is and what he can bring.

A few weeks ago we learned that Chance Amie would be leaving the Syracuse University football program. It came as a bit of surprise given that there had been some talk of Amie’s impressive in-practice performances.

The transfer left Syracuse with Tommy DeVito (the heir to Eric Dungey), former PWO Clayton Welch, and Rex Culpepper (who has split time at tight end). Syracuse was looking extremely thin at quarterback heading into the 2019 season just two weeks ago.

Enter David Summers. A 6-foot-3 205-pound Pro-Style Quarterback from Trumbull, Connecticut. Summers had previously been committed to Maryland, but after former Alabama Offensive Coordinator, Mike Locksley was named Terrapins head coach, Summers reconsidered his commitment.

A Look Ahead At Next Season’s Duke Football Prospects (DBR; Sumner)

Duke football has gone bowling six of the last seven seasons.

Can Duke continue that run?

David Cutcliffe and staff will have to fill some holes to plug, quarterback, wide receiver, tight end and linebacker particular areas of concern.

But that’s business as usual. Successful teams rarely return everyone and successful programs have the pieces to plug the gaps.

That’s how they become successful programs.

And I’ll talk about this more over the next few months, as Duke begins spring ball, sometime in March.

But replacing talent isn’t Duke’s only roadblock.

There’s that schedule.

Yikes!!

Non-conference games against two of the four teams in the most recent playoffs and an ACC cross-over game against a Syracuse team coming off a 10-3 season.

In fact, 11 of Duke’s 12 2019 opponents went bowling last season. UNC was the only one who didn’t and no one expects a rivalry game on the road to be easy.

And only six home games.

Until and unless the ACC expands or contracts or rearranges itself, Duke is locked into an eight-game conference schedule, four at home, four on the road.

Blue chip wide receiver becoming a constant presence at Clemson (islandpacket.com; Kornblut)

Phenix City, Ala., wide receiver E.J. Williams has burned a trail between his east Alabama town, hard against the Georgia line, and the Clemson campus. He was back Saturday for the junior day, his second visit in two weeks and and his fourth since last season’s opening game.

“It was a great visit, as always,” Williams said. “I was impressed with how intrigued coach Swinney was with all the recruits and how we were doing. And the fact that he stood in front of us for an hour and thirty minutes telling us about how to be a man and a great football player. I also got a tour of the campus and it’s amazing.”

Williams did not get a chance to meet privately with Swinney but he did get some time with receivers coach Jeff Scott who reiterated to him how he sees him fitting into the offense.

Florida grad transfer T.J. McCoy headed to Louisville (247sports.com; Demling)

The University of Louisville football team has landed help on the offensive line.

University of Florida backup center T.J. McCoy is headed to U of L as a graduate transfer. McCoy announced earlier this month that he was going to transfer and made an official visit to Louisville this weekend.

The 6-foot-1, 305-pound McCoy told new U of L coach Scott Satterfield he was coming before he left campus on Sunday and made his announcement on Twitter on Monday afternoon.

McCoy played in just four games during the 2018 season for Florida. He was a redshirt junior in ’18 and will have one year of eligibility remaining.

After initially enrolling at N.C. State as a signee in the 2015 recruiting class, McCoy opted to transfer to Florida after participating in spring ball to be closer to his father, who was undergoing cancer treatments. He sat out the 2015 season at Florida before becoming a bigger part of the offense the following year. In 2016 under head coach Jim McElwain, McCoy entered the season third on the depth chart. He would be pressed into action late in the year following a series of injuries. He started the final four games of the season for Florida and helped anchor an offensive line that played better down the stretch.

Report: Michigan to hire former ACC coordinator to staff (247sports.com; Hellman)

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh appears to have an impressive new staff member on the way to Ann Arbor. Former Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Nate Woody is reportedly on the way to Michigan after recent expectations saw him landing at either Army or Georgia State as a play caller.

Woody will join Michigan’s staff in an off-field role, reports Football Scoop’s Doug Samuels.

“In the past several weeks, per reports, Woody had reportedly taken the Army defensive coordinator job and was also set to join the Georgia State staff as of recently,” the report states. “We now understand he’s heading to Ann Arbor and is expected to join Jim Harbaugh’s staff.”

ACC Football Rx: Does ACC Expansion Make $ense? (RX; HM)

ACC Expansion - from a conference average-revenue point of view.

There are plenty of teams which would love to join the ACC - but how many of them would actually raise the average value of the conference? Assuming that all SEC and Big Ten teams are completely off-the-table, that leaves Notre Dame and the Big XII. Setting aside Notre Dame for the moment, which Big XII teams would actually add value to the ACC, on average?

ACC revenues compared to Big XII revenues 1. Texas $214,830,647

13. Florida State $144,514,413 7. Oklahoma $155,238,481
24. Louisville $120,445,303
29. Clemson $112,600,964 30. West Virginia $110,565,870
35. Duke $100,480,206 32. Texas Christian $105,055,587
41. North Carolina $96,540,823 37. Baylor $98,125,426
Average Per Team $94,812,314 42. Kansas $95,251,461
45. Virginia $92,865,175 46. Oklahoma State $91,644,865
47. Syracuse $91,445,865
50. Miami $89,135,175 51. Texas Tech $88,804,476
52. Virginia Tech $87,427,526 53. Kansas State $86,081,528
55. Pittsburgh $84,831,036
57. N.C. State $83,741,572
61. Georgia Tech $81,762,024 60. Iowa State $82,659,447
64. Boston College $74,587,091
65. Wake Forest $66,995,224

Texas and Oklahoma make more money than Florida State and would immediately become the #1 and #2 football schools if they were in the ACC. Together these two schools would raise the ACC average from $94M to $106M (an increase of $12M per team on average).

Probability of getting both full-time: low

West Virginia would be 4th in the ACC in terms of revenue. Though not a "king" like UT or OU, the Mountaineers would nonetheless be a nice boost to the value of the conference, raising the average by about $1M per team. Texas Christian would move the average almost as much as WVU - although clearly the built-in rivalries favor the Mountaineers.

Suppose the ACC added WVU and TCU together? That would boost the league's average value another million per team, or roughly $2M each.

From "Leaked Pricing Details Licensing Costs Per Channel For Live OTT Services" - Dan Rayburn

Streaming Media Blog's Rayburn published leaked info on what an unnamed "major live" OTT service is paying in per channel carriage fees (per month, per sub). Here are their sports channels:

Channel Price
ESPN $6.00
ESPN2 $1.16
ABC $1.85
CBS $2.00
Fox $1.62
NBC $1.46
BTN $0.20
FS1 $1.35
FS2 $0.48
ESPNU $0.25
NBC Sports $0.90
NFL Network $1.45
MLB Network $2.00
Sports Total $20.72

NOTE: Obviously that's the "out of market" rate for BTN, and they didn't show SECN pricing.

CONCLUSIONS: (1) That's a lot of money for just 13 channels, and only sports at that. (2) It doesn't seem to matter to ESPN, etc. whether it's cable or OTT/streaming - they're going to get their rate.

BOTTOM LINE: That bodes well for the ability of Disney/ESPN to get a good price for the ACC Network...

New Hanover Square apartments: $2K-plus rents, quartz counters, balconies (PS; Moriarty)

The six new townhouses and three flats in the $3.4 million expansion of the historic Grange Building in Hanover Square come with premium rents, but also plenty of features.

Rents at GrangeX -- the name of the expansion -- range from $2,250 to $2,575 a month. That does not include utilities, but it does include:

Gourmet kitchens, beverage coolers, stainless steel appliances, quartz countertops, kitchen pantries, glass tile backsplashes, maple flooring and cabinets, large walk-in closets, full-size washers and dryers in each unit, on-site parking, high-speed Wi-Fi, a fitness center, storage lockers and even a pet washing station.

In addition, the six two-story townhouses each have private balconies.

All the new units come with two bedrooms and either one and a half or two and a half bathrooms.

Owners Mike Wicker, James Leana and Donald McMasters built two floors onto the two that were already there. The apartments are on the top three floors, while the first floor contains store fronts.

The building is at 215 E. Water St. and overlooks historic Hanover Square.

“Hanover Square is a little bit off the beaten path compared to Armory Square,” said Wicker. “It’s a little quieter, with better parking.”

Ironic that Miami is getting Blissett out of Queens and Cuse is getting Munoz out of Ft. Lauderdale... Similar builds: Munoz is 6'3.5", 276 lbs; Blissett is 6'4", 271 lbs. Of course Munoz is a 3-star, while Blissett is 4-star.
