Welcome to National Periodic Table Day!

National Periodic Table Day is observed annually on February 7.

To understand the development of the periodic table, we first must understand the discovery of elements and their effect on science.

Elements known to ancient man were few. Gold, silver, copper, iron, lead, tin, mercury, sulfur and carbon were the earliest known elements. These were all known prior to the 1st century A.D.

Over time, arsenic, antimony, phosphorus and zinc were discovered. By 1809 there were 47 discovered elements.

One of the earliest attempts to organize the elements was by Johann Döbereiner in 1817. He organized elements into groups of three, or triads, based on similar qualities.

On February 7, 1863, English chemist John Newlands published one of the first table of elements, which divided the known 56 elements into 11 groups based on the “Law of Octaves.” This suggested that any one element will have similar properties to elements eight places before and behind it on the table.

Syracuse AD John Wildhack on attendance records, TV blackouts and Nike deal (PS; Carlson)

With Syracuse’s basketball teams hoping to set multiple attendance records this month and the football program announcing events that will turn its game against Clemson into a football extravaganza next year, it’s been a busy month for Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack.

The Orange are trying to set record attendance numbers in both men’s and women’s basketball. The Clemson football game will now include a jersey retirement for Tim Green and the school’s homecoming ceremonies.

With all that going on, Wildhack sat down for a question-and-answer session with Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard on Tuesday. Here are the most important highlights.

Nike's apparel deal
Wildhack said that Syracuse continues to progress toward an expected new apparel deal with Nike. The current deal is set to end after the 2018-19 academic year.

In 2018, Wildhack said the school received interest from both Under Armour and Adidas but that he was inclined to re-negotiate with Nike first. Since then, his comments have pointed even more sharply toward a continuation of the relationship between the school and Nike.

Wildhack said on Tuesday that he continues to negotiate only with Nike.

"We’ve made significant progress," Wildhack said. "We’re moving in the right direction there. We’re kind of, to use the old football analogy, we’re well into the fourth quarter."

Where is Syracuse football in recruiting rankings after National Signing Day? (PS; Bailey)

National Signing Day 2019 has come and gone. For Syracuse football, it was a good one.
...

No. 10 Syracuse
We've already covered the Orange's National Signing Day in detail, so let's stick to the rankings here.

Syracuse has moved up six spots nationally and three within the ACC since signing 17 players in December. It's worth noting that running back Jawhar Jordan is not included in 247's calculations as the Class of 2018 holdover is still counted with last cycle's group.

SU built off its 10-3 season on the field by picking up commitments from seven of its nine highest-rated signees in December or later.

National rank: 51 (previously 59)

Syracuse's NSD signees
RB Garrison Johnson

DE Steven Linton
DL Jason Munoz
QB David Summers

No. 11 Wake Forest
Next up in a line of ACC teams is the Demon Deacons.

Wake Forest signed three-star cornerback Isaiah Essissima on Wednesday. A Houston signee who has reportedly been released from his national letter of intent, he has also been offered by Nebraska, Iowa State, Illinois and Texas Tech, among others.

WFU signed 20 players in December, including four-star wide receivers Donavon Greene and Nolan Grouix.

National rank: 52 (previously 46)

Wake Forest's NSD signees
CB Isaiah Essissima

No. 12 Pittsburgh
As Syracuse football loaded up at linebacker this cycle, it did not offer a local who previously attended Christian Brothers Academy, linebacker SirVocea Dennis.

Dennis, who completed a post-graduate year at The Peddie School in Highstown, N.J., last fall, signed with Pittsburgh on Wednesday. He was previously committed to Air Force.

"Growing up in Syracuse, I was a big Big East fan and I always watched the rivalry between Syracuse and Pitt,” Dennis told Chris Peak of Panther-Lair.com. “I didn’t dislike Syracuse, but for some reason I always loved those teams that were rivals against Syracuse. So then when I was a rising junior, I went to a Pitt camp and I remember really liking it. I said, if I ever get a chance to come here, I’m going.”

The Panthers also landed graduate transfer offensive lineman Nolan Ulizio from Michigan.

National rank: 53 (previously 44)

Complete Guide to SU Football’s 2019 Class – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Gross)

Syracuse added four signees on National Signing Day, rounding off the class at 21 players. For details on the new commits, check out this piece. Time to break down the 2019 class in full.

By Position:

Defense: 13

Six DLs
Four DBs
Three LBs
Offense: 8

Three OLs
Two RBs
One QB
One TE
One WR
SU did a nice job filling needs. The biggest concern was at the linebacker position after graduating starting linebackers Kielan Whitner and Ryan Guthrie. Although Syracuse only landed three linebackers, it’s by far their strongest position quality-wise. SU’s highest rated recruit Mikel Jones is a linebacker and so is four-star Lee Kpogba.

On the offensive side, Syracuse had one glaring issue after the early signing period. The class of ’19 had no quarterback. Chance Amie’s transfer made it even more alarming. One of the big victories on Wednesday was signing Connecticut QB David Summers, who verbally committed last week. A team should never welcome in a class without a gunslinger, so landing Summers capped off a positionally sound recruiting season for SU.

National Signing Day studio show details 2019 football commits | The NewsHouse (thenewshouse.com; Kriley)

A small number of Syracuse fans, almost all of whom were clad in some sort of Orange gear, made their way to the National Signing Day Studio Show at Manley Field House. Here, Orange play-by-play announcer Matt Park and analyst Michael McAllister detailed the football signees who will be calling Syracuse home in 2019.

The outcome of the 2018 college football season was not one that many Syracuse fans had expected for their favorite program. Each of the prior four seasons saw more than half of their games end up in the loss column.

Finally, Head Coach Dino Babers was able to turn things around and led Syracuse to an impressive 10-win season. In his third year, he was finally able to populate his team with 21 new guys he felt would help bring a winning culture to Central New York.

Following a breakdown of the four most recent high school players signed with Syracuse, the crowd in attendance first saw an interview with the Orange head coach, led by Park.

Babers discussed how important this past season was in order to continually land highly-rated recruits who he believes will help the team to continue winning. This includes being an attractive team to players looking to transfer to a stronger program, such as Darius Tisdale, who will be making his way to Syracuse after a pit stop in Pennsylvania at a junior college.

FEB. 6 COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Syracuse inks four more recruits (timestelegraph.com; AP)

Syracuse signed four players on Wednesday to bring its recruiting total to 21.

Joining those who signed in December were: running back Garrison Johnson out of Manvel, Texas; defensive linemen Steven Linton, of Dublin, Georgia, and Jason Munoz, of Hollywood, Florida; and quarterback David Summers, of Fairfield, Connecticut.

Coach Dino Babers calls his new class “a big upgrade, probably a higher-rated class than we’ve had in a long time.”

The Orange finished 10-3 and ranked No. 15 in their third year under Babers, ending their breakthrough season with a victory over former Big East rival West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl.

Signing Day Part II- Orange Football locks in four new players (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

National Signing Day the first week in February used to be something of a national holiday, with high school student-athletes making their college choice official.

Now, with the widely applauded early signing period in December, most classes for college football teams are locked in before the new year.

In fact, Syracuse signed 17 players the week before Christmas.

So it's no surprise that the Orange inked just four more new players, after all, it does bring the Class of 2019 to a healthy 21 players.

What's surprising were the caliber of those players and how Syracuse earned two more pledges on signing day.

During their respective announcements, Texas running back Garrison Johnson flipped his commitment from North Texas to Syracuse. Nebraska, Virginia and others were also involved.

In Georgia, defensive end Steve Linton committed to the Orange over Missouri, Louisville and more.

They signed on Wednesday, along with quarterback David Summers from Maryland and Florida lineman Jason Munoz.

National Signing Day superlatives: ACC Conference (247sports.com; Dohn)

BEST CLASS — Clemson has the No. 1 class in the ACC and No. 10 overall in the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings, and it is led by five-star signee Lawrenceville (Ga.) Archer’s Andrew Booth. The highest rated of the Clemson’s 12 four-star signees is Homestead (Fla.) South Dade’s Frank Ladson. Booth is the No. 2 cornerback (23th overall) and Ladson is the No. 5 receiver (39th overall) in the 247Sports Composite. Clemson also reached into an uncommon recruiting area when it landed Folsom (Calif.) High four-star receiver Joe Ngata, who is the No. 9 receiver in the class. It is the first time since 1991 Clemson signed a California prep player. Clemson also pulled in a huge offensive player when Tampa Plant’s William Putnam, the No. 5 offensive guard in the class, picked the Tigers on Dec. 20.

...
SLEEPER RECRUIT — Hampton (Ga.) Dutchtown’s Kevon Glenn is a mid-level three-star, but do not sleep on the No. 36 inside linebacker and Florida State signee. He is everything you want in the middle of the defense – smart, a thumper and athletic. At 6-foot-1, 220 pounds he also has good size and can add a little more weight without losing his quickness. He can stop the run and also be effective in coverage.

Virginia Tech makes slight jump in recruiting rankings to close out national signing day (roanoke.com; Niziolek)

Virginia Tech moved up the 247Sports composite team rankings on national signing day with the addition of three signees including four-star offensive lineman Doug Nester.

Nester is the highest ranked offensive recruit since 2012 and highest rated offensive lineman in program history. The West Virginia native is one of seven four-star signees in Virginia Tech’s 2019 class.

The Hokies started out the day ranked No. 29 after signing 19 student-athletes during the early signing period.

Virginia Tech closed out Wednesday ranked No. 26. The program also moved up one spot in the ACC rankings to No. 3 behind Clemson and Florida State.

It’s the third straight top 30 class for Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente. The Hokies had the No. 24 ranked class in 2018, but finished 4th in the ACC. The 26 player class also featured seven four-star signees.

“I think it’s got a chance to be a really special group of people,” Fuente said, of the 2019 signing class. “You all know me well enough now that I’m not prone to hyperbole when it comes to these kinds of things.”

Rob Weintraub's ACC Alumni Trophies
Welcome to the seventh (!) edition of my annual Alumni Awards -- choosing the season's best NFL player from each of the Power Five college programs. It's a great way to gauge the health of the collegiate teams, an indicator of the volatility of the pro game, and, most of all, a fun argument starter.

Here are the 2018 Alumni Award winners! In honor of the new national champions, we begin with the ACC…

2018: Matt Ryan, QB, Atlanta

SYRACUSE (6)

2012: Chandler Jones, DE, New England
2013: TIE -- Chandler Jones, DE, New England and Arthur Jones, DT, Baltimore

2016: Chandler Jones, DE, Arizona
2017: Chandler Jones, DE, Arizona
2018: Chandler Jones, DE, Arizona

Another walkover for Jones, who at least continues to earn it. With my Orange apparently back in the mix at long last under coach Dino Babers, hopefully there will be some competition for the Cardinals pass-rusher one of these years.

Want to open an Anchor Bar in Syracuse? Destiny USA has spot for it (PS; Moses Buckshot)

Destiny USA says it has a spot open for Buffalo’s famous Anchor Bar to open a Syracuse location.

“But we need someone to franchise it,” saidNikita Jankowski, Destiny USA’s director of marketing.

Jankowski said Destiny USA has been talking with Buffalo’s Anchor Bar-- the restaurant that touts being the “home of the original chicken wing" -- about opening a location at the Syracuse mall. Anchor Bar claims to have invented Buffalo wings in 1964.

The restaurant has locations in Canada, Michigan, Texas, Maryland and other locations across New York, including in New York City. A billboard seeking a franchise owner was installed today on the third floor of the mall at the former location of Bambino’s Bistro. The billboard says: “Open an Anchor Bar franchise here! (as in, THIS exact spot!)"

Bambino’s Bistro, a family-owned Italian restaurant, closed in July after seven months.

Destiny USA tells anyone who is interested in becoming an Anchor Bar franchise owner, to contact Mark Dempsey at mark@anchorbar.com.

So what are our thoughts on the pending Nike deal?
It isn't going to be for a lot of money. The recent resurgence of the football team will help but the sneaker industry is in a bad period now, so there is no competition from other companies.

Nike is completely in the driver's seat and they know it.

Syracuse players, parents and coaches favor expanded family travel allowances (DO; Gutierrez & Emerman)

In the final game of their son’s career, Blessed and Darlene Ishmael sat in Carrier Dome section 128, row nine. They supported Steve Ishmael, Syracuse’s star wide receiver, who broke two program records that day. His parents said they were glad to be there not only to see their son make history, but to see him play for the first time in his four-year career.

For the Ishmaels, who reside in Miami, and other parents of Syracuse student-athletes, travel expenses can be too steep to see their sons or daughters play. That Ishmael’s parents hardly saw their son play in-person underscores an issue for athletes and their families.

Currently, only families of players on teams that advance to the NCAA Tournament Final Four are compensated with a $3,ooo allowance for travel. According to a NCAA press release, “Schools decide how and when to distribute funds to family members but make sure the funds are used as intended.” The College Football Playoff has a similar waiver, $2,500 for the top-4 football teams’ families in the country, as of 2015. The families of players that reach their respective finals receive $4,000.

But many Syracuse players and families want more, saying a travel allowance during the regular season would let families support and celebrate with them. Athletes love when their family shows up: “Just knowing they were in there in the stands gave me motivation,” Ishmael said.

Yup...I bet SU tries for a shorter contract.
