Welcome to National Clam Chowder Day!
There are few things as comforting as a bowl of warm clam chowder on a winter’s day, so it’s wonderful we get to celebrate National Clam Chowder Day on February 25. Originally considered a poor man’s food, the first chowders were fish stews made from vegetable and fish stewed in a large pot or cauldron. (The word “chowder” possibly finds its roots in the Latin word “calderia,” or cooking pot.) Clams are thought to have been introduced to the mix by the Native Americans and by the mid 1800’s were considered a main ingredient in what came to be known as clam chowder. Today, there are dozens of regional variations, including San Francisco clam chowder which comes in a sourdough bread bowl! There are few things as comforting as a bowl of warm clam chowder on a winter’s day, so it’s wonderful we get to celebrate National Clam Chowder Day on February 25. Tommy DeVito Q&A: Clemson game is 'all everybody’s thinking about' inside Syracuse football (PS; Bailey)
Tommy DeVito's first year playing for Syracuse football was an eventful one.
As a redshirt freshman, he helped lead the team to Atlantic Coast Conference victories over Florida State and North Carolina. He took some lumps against Western Michigan and Notre Dame. And he competed with Eric Dungey throughout the campaign, ultimately serving as SU first second-stringer to win a game since Dungey himself took over for Terrel Hunt in 2015.
As winter workouts inch toward the start of spring practice on Sunday, DeVito is preparing to take on the starting job of a program coming off its best season in at least 17 years. The lone consensus four-star recruit from the Dino Babers era thus far, he sat down with The Post-Standard | Syracuse.com to discuss his experiences last fall, offseason emphases and goals for 2019.
Here's some of that conversation, edited for clarity and brevity. Portions of the interview will be used for other stories in the coming weeks and months.
Syracuse.com: Now that the year is over, what's it been like to start to reflect on that experience?
DeVito: I really just use it as a stepping stone. Learn from it. Grow from it. Go back, watch the film, like I did and I still watch it now occasionally. Look at all the little things. Look at the things I didn’t do so well. Look at the things that I did do well. As far as other components, the players, watching it together with other people and just moving on from there.

2019 Transfers affect VT, FSU, Miami differently.
Another 4-star quarterback just transferred - this time from Oregon to Virginia Tech. Again, FSU made no move to shore up that position for the Seminoles. I know I've written about this already, but I want to revisit it since the situation has changed recently.
Here are the quarterbacks projected to be on the rosters at Virginia Tech and at Florida State for the 2019-20 football season:
VT QB Name Stars Type notes
Willis, Ryan 3 PRO RS JR/TR
Kadum, Knox 3 PRO Rookie signee
Burmeister, Braxton 4 DUAL Transfer, Sit one
Hooker, Hendon 4 PRO available now
Mummau, Chase na PRO RS Soph
FSU QB Name Stars Type notes
Blackman, James 3 PRO only one available now
Travis, Jordan 3 DUAL Transfer, pending appeal
With the transfer of Burmeister, the Hokies will have two 4-star quarterbacks on their roster - and neither of them is projected to start this Fall! The story on Gobbler Country is that QB depth all of a sudden could be a strength.

ACC Football Rx: Across the ACC - 2/23/19 (RX; HM)
The ACC has won the most national titles of any conference (six) in football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and baseball since 2015. The next closest is the SEC with four. The ACC is the only conference to win each of the four titles over that stretch.
In the fall standings of the Learfield Directors’ Cup, the ACC leads all conferences with four teams in the top 10, and eight teams in the top 20. Wake Forest leads the way at No. 6, followed by No. 7 Duke, No. 9 Notre Dame, No. 10 NC State, No. 14 Virginia, No. 15 North Carolina, No. 17 Florida State and No. 19 Syracuse.
Men’s Basketball
• Six ACC teams are ranked in the AP Top 25, including No. 1 Duke, No. 3 Virginia, No. 8 North Carolina, No. 16 Florida State, No. 18 Louisville and No. 20 Virginia Tech. The ACC is tied for the most teams in the poll and no other conference has three teams in the top 10.
• The ACC has had at least one team ranked in the AP poll for 1,009 consecutive weeks dating back to December 19, 1962 (when it was a top-10 only poll).
• No. 8 North Carolina’s road win at top-ranked Duke on Wednesday night left three teams – the Tar Heels, Blue Devils and Virginia – tied for the top spot in the ACC regular-season standings at 11-2 with five games remaining in the regular season.
• Five ACC teams – Duke, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida State and Virginia Tech – have reached the 20-win mark for the 2018-19 season, and NC State’s overtime win over Boston College on Wednesday night marked the Wolfpack’s 19th of the year.
• Virginia has tied an ACC record (set previously by five other teams) with four road wins over an AP Top 25 team. The Cavaliers have victories at No. 23 Maryland on Nov. 28; at No. 23 NC State on Jan. 29; at No. 8 UNC on Feb. 11 and at No. 20 Virginia Tech on Feb. 18. Virginia travels to No. 18 Louisville on Saturday.

Swofford: The ACC ESPN Network will reflect the values of ACC-member schools
ACC Commissioner John Swofford spoke with Wes Durham, an ACC radio and TV commentator, about the ACC network, the conference, and the College Football Playoff during an event staged by the National Sports Media Association [NSMA]. Here are a few of his statements:
The ACC Network, which begins on Aug. 22, will reflect the values and achievements of the league’s 15 member schools and tell stories about the conference’s student-athletes and coaches, ACC Commissioner John Swofford said Thursday in Winston-Salem.
“The (Atlantic Coast Conference) is the strongest academic conference in the country except for the Ivy League,” Swofford said. “These are the greatest assets that we have — the athletes. These stories don’t always get told.”
“The ACC Network will need to reflect the cornerstone of what (the schools) are about — the quality of your institutions,” Swofford said. “Fans and alums are proud of that. The ACC Network will be an exciting venture for us.”

What to expect as winter storm with strong winds sweeps through CNY (PS; O'Toole)
The temperature has begun to drop, rain has turned to snow, and the winds have started to howl.
After a somewhat rainy, but relatively warm Sunday -- the high temperature reached 51 degrees at 1:56 p.m. in Syracuse -- a cold front has begun to move into Central New York.
By 11 p.m., the temperature had dipped to 33 degrees and winds were whipping at around 35 mph, with gusts as high as 48 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
Over the last couple hours, Onondaga County 911 dispatchers have received a handful of weather-related calls -- from a tree that toppled wires on Sabine Street in Syracuse to sparking, low-hanging wires at the Liverpool bypass and Oswego Road in Liverpool. Another tree also fell on Fly Road in DeWitt, causing downed wires. And in Syracuse, firefighters had to briefly close part of North Townsend Street after scaffolding on a building fell and pulled wires down, 911 dispatchers said.
