Happy April Fools' Day!
It isn't exactly known how the day started. One prominent theory says that it started in France in 1564, after New Year's Day was changed to January 1 that year. Those who wanted to continue celebrating the old new year around Easter became known as "April fools," and tricks and jokes were commonly played on them. Although France started beginning their years on January 1 in 1564, they didn't adopt the Gregorian calendar until 1582, and some sources claim this may have been the year that April Fools' Day started. Either way, an early prank in France was to put a paper fish, known as a poisson d’avril, meaning "April fish," on someone's back. It represented an easily caught fish, which was a symbol for someone who is gullible. The tradition still takes place today.

Spring Practice Notebook: Week 3 - Syracuse University Athletics
Head coach Dino Babers' squad has crossed the halfway point of 2019 spring practice. The Orange have completed nine of their 15 allotted sessions. Syracuse will practice four more times and hold one more scrimmage before making their public debut April 13 during "Spring Football Saturday" presented by AmeriCU.
After three workouts in helmets and shorts the first week of March, Babers said Syracuse would practice 12 consecutive times in full gear. The goal? Instill toughness.
"It's going to be hard," Babers said.
MEET SYRACUSE'S CALIFORNIA KID
Redshirt senior quarterback Clayton Welch is one of the leading candidates to serve as Tommy DeVito's backup this season. The Chico, Calif. native joined the Orange in 2017 and saw his first action in last year's win against Wagner. Syracuse.com's Stephen Bailey recently profiled Welch, who grew up a stone's throw away from NFL All-Pro Aaron Rodgers.

The Miami football program is unique in its ability to attract top coaches multiple times and continue to win national championships. The ability to win a national championship and numerous other reasons continue to make Miami a destination job in college football.
When Howard Schnellenberger took over the Miami football program in 1979 there had been thoughts of the Hurricanes dropping the sport. In Schnellenbergers second season Miami went 9-3 and in his fifth season, they won a national championship. He set the standard the blueprint for how to win at Miami.
Schnellenberger coined the phrase the state of Miami. That was to build a virtual fence around Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties when it came to recruiting. The Miami football program is not going to be able dominant recruiting in South Florida like they did 40 years ago.

ACC: Virginia Cavaliers
It might be hard to call Virginia too much of a sleeper considering what Bronco Mendenhall put together over the last two seasons – including an impressive bowl win over South Carolina to close out last year.
This team should be stronger than the eight-win squad of 2018.
Bryce Perkins is a terrific quarterback to work around, the receiving corps is solid, the lines are good, and the defensive back eight is full of veterans. Best of all, there’s no such thing as a sure-thing loss on the schedule – there’s no Clemson.

With the spring practice session hitting the home stretch, the Duke football program makes its final preparations for Friday evening’s Spring Showcase. The Blue Devils will have one more practice, on Wednesday morning, prior to Friday’s 6:30 p.m. start at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium.
REMINDER OF SPRING SHOWCASE DETAILS
Friday’s free event will start at 6:30 p.m. with the Science Drive Garage (no tailgating) and Grounds Lot (ADA Parking and Blue Devil Tower guests) parking lots opening at 5 p.m. The Bostock Gate (North) and Powers Gate (West) will open at 6 p.m. with all seating on the west side of the stadium. Highlights inside the venue for the showcase include:
• Open seating on the west side of the stadium, in the blue chairback seats
• Concessions open and Duke Merchandise on sale
• Interactive inflatable games set up on the concourse throughout the event
• Face painters on hand during the event
• Representatives from the Duke Ticket Office on hand to answer any questions
Following the showcase, at approximately 8:25 p.m., the Blue Devils will hold a meet and greet with the student-athletes and coaches on the field. At around 8:45 p.m., Duke will host a Family Movie Night at Wallace Wade Stadium, showing Remember the Titans. Fans are encouraged to bring a blanket and sit on the field or in a stadium seat to watch a movie on the video board. No chairs are allowed on the playing field.

Central Catholic's A.J. Beatty nears 3 dozen offers with ACC, Big 10, Big 12 options - Trib HSSN (triblive.com; Harlan)
The offers keep coming for Central Catholic junior A.J. Beatty.
The 6-foot-5, 255-pound defensive end is approaching three dozen Division 1 football offers with options in the ACC, Big 10 and Big 12 conferences, among others.
His latest additions this week included an offer from North Carolina, his fourth school from the ACC.
Beatty also added Florida Atlantic and Penn, his seventh Ivy League offer.
His recruitment has intensified in recent weeks. He’s announced 22 offers since Feb. 1 including Power 5 schools Pitt, West Virginia, Boston College, Indiana, Purdue, Rutgers and Syracuse.

Meatball Madness 2019: See who makes the best meatballs in the Syracuse area (PS; Pucci)
Vince’s Gourmet Imports in North Syracuse took home the top prize as the best meatball in town at the annual Meatball Madness contest.
The Italian specialty foods store took home the people’s choice award in 2018. This year, that title went to newcomer Vicinos Brick & Brew, also located in North Syracuse.
Tassone’s Wine Garden in Baldwinsville won second place in the judges’ voting while Santangelo’s in Liverpool, a six-time winner in the event’s 15-year history, finished third.

Guests packed inside the International Building at the New York State Fairgrounds and dined on the competing meatballs, presented in individual compartments in a styrofoam egg carton so that attendees could judge the meatballs themselves.
The event also featured an Italian buffet supplied by Dominick’s Restaurant, live music from Mickey Vendetti and the Goodtime Band, plus wine and coffee tastings, raffles, silent auctions and children’s activities.
