My Pre-Spring Depth Chart

Safety room really scares me tbh. Gonna need the young guys to step up. Braheem Long will be fine. NEED Hughes to be healthy. He’s a stud. Really hope Andrews takes a step up, he’s big, long and fast. And need Snowden to play to his potential coming out of high school. If those 4 do their things and stay healthy we will be fine. But to me the Safety position hinges on those 4
Has Tedarius Hughes been recovering from an injury? Im not sure he has. I know Tristan Hughes the 2027 DB recruit had a labrum surgery in the end of November and I think some people may be thinking of that.

I also really like Stokes as a safety prospect, possibly the STAR. Not sure if he’ll be ready to contribute as a true freshman as he is coming from DE and it may be too big a jump on competition. But he has the size, speed and athletic ability. Although he is on campus already so he should have a chance to settle in and get comfortable.

We’ve added a lot of new players with real experience at the lower levels of college football, and I expect that to bring much more consistency this season. Overall, I think the talent and experience are improved from last year across the board, and there’s a strong group of young players who look ready to contribute in year one or year two. The true and redshirt freshmen, especially along the offensive line, defensive line, and in the defensive back room, have a real opportunity to climb the depth chart this spring, and I believe some will. I’m especially watching the position battles at OL, DL, DB, and WR, and I’m excited to see what 5-star wide receiver Calvin Russell Jr. can do. This is just my early take on the roster, and with players likely switching positions during spring ball, I’ll put together a post-spring depth chart once things start to settle:

I made some tweaks on the receiving group below according to my thoughts. I agree with you at the slot. But I don’t think Williams is quite ready to be slotted in as a starter just yet. I think Merriweather, Cole and Russell get a majority of the snaps on the outside. And I really think Merriweather ends up our #1 and a starter. He could play at either outside spot but I think if he’s going to get starter snaps it’s probably at the X. I think Cole fits better at the Z and will be solid and probably share time with Russell there, as he is too talented to not get a significant amount of PT. But I can see them moving Russell around a bit as I think Fran had said something to the effect that they’ll use him in a few different ways. I think he’ll see some snaps at the slot too. They will need to find a handful of snaps per game for Samuel too and that will likely be at either the X or the slot. I think he’ll primarily play CB again but will also see a little more time at WR this season.

WR-X
Zamondre Merriweather
Darien Williams OR

I really like Outen Moore and Gough as a trio that can really step up
I like both Outen and Gough for the future, just not sure they get much run this year. But if there are injuries I could certainly see those guys stepping up.

Same here. Really, really wish they got that Safety from Toledo in the portal.

He had a cast on his knee after there state championship game. If I had to guess I believe he had surgery. And yes both Hughes player (2026 and 2027) were hurt this past season.

Ah yes OK. I thought he had an injury too but didn't see it in his thread. Found it in another thread where he had injured his knee and had surgery in mid December. From his photos, it looks like he was doing some light lifting rehab with that leg just a month later. I would guess he'd be good to go by fall, but would be even better obviously if he was full go in the spring.

Looking Ahead 2026: Tedarius Hughes

It makes me sad that I don't immediately recognize half of these names, with the portal taking over college sports. Very limited continuity from year to year.

I've seen nothing from Pringle to show ACC starter capability. Hopefully one or more others step up and he and Betrand can be buried on the depth chart.
I think with both the oline and defense the hope is that the new staff allows these guys to make a leap from last year. Remains to be seen, but there wasn't much in the way evidence that we had a ton of starting oline talent on the roster from this past season.

With the amount of $$ paid to Calvin Russell there is zero chance he is not our #1 starting WR.
He will start, not sure if he'll be our number 1 or not. Big question about any of the younger WRs is if they can run block or not as most elite HS WRs aren't really asked to. Although if he's Randy Moss out the gate then suppose blocking isn't important... but older, more developed DBs should be physical and body Russell every chance they get.

We realistically could start in 4 WR set and rotate TEs as situations dictate. Put Williams/Gough/Outten etc out wide opposite Russell and run Merriweather, Weaver and or Boobie at inside WRs to have more physicality blocking IF we discover running plays outside the guards... or heaven forbid off tackle, toss or sweep plays.

I love our new hires and I can excuse players being outmatched but the aforementioned played lazy, got out worked and simply quit on too many plays. Maybe the light bulb turns on but work ethic is a tough one to overcome in my experience.

We also probably had the worst Oline coach in Div 1 P5. He told a guy who just made all combine offensive team that he did not see a spot for him starting at Syracuse and did not see a path forward for him.

Something tells me our evaluation on what we had at OL might have been a bit off. I expect it to be substantially better this season.

Hughes is participating in winter works outs I don’t know how limited he is in it though I seen pics and videos online of him moving good.

I agree. I think Russell will move around a lot, and I believe he’ll start because he’s simply too talented and skilled not to be on the field. I also think Gough will push a lot of the older players, as he has that explosive, big-play ability we saw from Cook last year. Outen will probably still be a little raw, so he could take a back seat this year, but I expect him to contribute more next season. I have Williams up there as well since he got significant playing time during those games last year. Samuels also needs to find snaps on offense, and I think that will increase now that he’s had a year to get his body right to play both sides.

I think he’s good to go, but we’ll most likely hear more from Fran during spring practice. If he is ready, I believe he has a chance to start, especially if he adds a little more weight. He’s a very long, lengthy safety, which is exactly the type of player we like to have at that position.

Yea it took my 2 hours to see and check that these players didn’t portal it is a sad state we are in. Hopefully it slows down

We have big guys like Moore, Weaver and Merriweather and of course Calvin Russell Jr who all have the size and tools to help ruj block.

With the amount of $$ paid to Calvin Russell there is zero chance he is not our #1 starting WR.

Just because he's getting paid doesn't make him WR1 no matter what. He'll certainly get an opportunity in practice to show what he has though. He'll still have to mostly earn it. I love Russell's athletic ability and upside. He'll have the best combination of height, speed and agility at WR right away. But as a true freshman, i'm just not sure he is polished enough of a WR to be the best we have from day 1. He has played a fair amount of QB in HS as well.

I certainly think he plays a lot. I'm just guessing he'll be listed at the same spot as Cole and they split time in some capacity. Who gets more snaps i'm not sure, but it certainly could be Russell. I could see them splitting to start out. And if Russell is our best WR from the start, then I could see Russell at the X as a starter and then Merriweather and Cole opposite at the Z spitting some time.
