Welcome to National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day!

There are many variations of the sandwich. Instead of or in addition to jelly and peanut butter, ingredients may include jam, honey, sliced fruit, and cream cheese. Nutella, almond butter, and marshmallow fluff can also be used. When marshmallow fluff takes the place of the jelly the sandwich is known as a fluffernutter.

The first peanut butter and jelly sandwich recipe may have been printed in 1901, in The Boston Cooking School Magazine of Culinary Science & Domestic Economics. The recipe called for "three very thin layers of bread and two of filling, one of peanut paste, whatever brand you prefer, and currant or crab-apple jelly for the other." The recipe's creator, Julia David Chandler, said that "the combination is delicious, and, so far as I know, original."

Syracuse football player has own sneaker business thanks to little-known NCAA provision (PS; Mink)

Anthony Queeley is a college football player getting paid.

People will meet him at night on Skytop with a stack of $20 bills, or he’ll drive to an agreed-upon location to make a transaction.

"I’m making good money,” Queeley said.

Queeley won’t say how much money he brings in each month, but he says he turns a profit selling high-end sneakers on the re-sale market for hundreds of dollars more than their retail value.

And, perhaps of top concern for Syracuse football and its fan base, the school says he’s not violating NCAA rules.

“It’s just a passion I have since a young boy,” Queeley said. “I loved sneakers. Once I found it can make me money, I was like, OK, that’s just extra.”

Queeley is a redshirt freshman wide receiver from Orlando, Fla., who is vying for a starting role on offense after nearly earning his way onto the field last season.

He is allowed to use his name to promote his business thanks to a little-known NCAA provision called a previously approved waiver.

The Stars Are Aligned for Syracuse (southernpigskin.com; Holcomb)

The Syracuse football program took a major step forward in the third season under Dino Babers last fall. Syracuse reached the AP Top 25 and won 10 games for the first time in 17 years.

At one point, the Orange reached No. 12 in the AP Poll, which was their highest ranking since 1996.

By no means is it easy climbing out of the last place in a Power 5 division, but looking ahead to 2019, the next step Syracuse wants to take is even more difficult. The difference between good and great programs is minimal and yet going from a 10-win team to a championship level squad is the hardest leap to make.

But the stars may be lining up just right for the Orange in 2019.

As is the case for many teams in the ACC, Syracuse has questions at quarterback. Eric Dungey graduated, and while he dealt with injuries throughout his career, Dungey will be remembered as one of the greatest Orange quarterbacks of all time.

His mobility and accuracy was a perfect match for Babers’ system, and he took full advantage in his senior season. Dungey missed the end of a few games because of injury, but he started all 13 contests and completed 60.9 percent of his passes for an average of 7.7 yards per attempt. He also rushed for 754 yards, accounting for 33 total touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Syracuse football fans have finally invested in Dino Babers (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Syracuse football fans have finally put their money where their mouth is for Dino Babers. Here are all the details and what this means for the future.
Since Dino Babers has stepped foot here in Syracuse he has preached belief without evidence. Suggesting to fans both old and young that he will deliver a winner to Orange Nation, but he needed their faith.

That faith was tested in the first two years of the Babers’ experience with the Orange going 4-8 in each of those seasons. There were glimmers of hope with Syracuse taking out a top-25 team in Virginia Tech and then following that up with a massive upset of the Clemson Tigers in the Carrier Dome.

Taggart Needs to Keep Expectations in Check (southernpigskin.com; Holcomb)

Despite a disappointing 5-7 record, which led to the program snapping its 36-year bowl streak, Taggart is mostly selling the same optimism this offseason.

Oh, how much things can change in a year.

Last April, there were high expectations surrounding Florida State football. Willie Taggart provided a more forthright and fresh face to the program, leading to a record of almost 61,000 fans attending the Seminoles spring game.

That was more fans than what the Miami Hurricanes averaged during its 2017 home schedule.

Despite a disappointing 5-7 record, which led to the program snapping its 36-year bowl streak, Taggart is mostly selling the same optimism this offseason. Through the first two weeks of spring practice, Taggart sounds pleased with where his team stands.

“Our guys are working and competing every single day,” Taggart told Seminoles.com. “We come out here and make them play. We don’t have anybody pouting about anything. Guys are coming to work and trying to win every single day.”

Taggart didn’t say anything real profound in that quote, but one key aspect of coaches’ speak is missing -- improvement. He didn’t say anything about needing to get better.

Tate Martell Puts Miami Ahead of Schedule (southernpigskin.com; Holcomb)

This week, the NCAA ruled Ohio State transfer quarterback Tate Martell will be immediately eligible to play at Miami in 2019.

This week, the NCAA ruled Ohio State transfer quarterback Tate Martell will be immediately eligible to play at Miami in 2019. The decision sent shockwaves around the sport Tuesday evening, and rightfully so because it could potentially change the college football landscape.

Perhaps it will, but one thing is definitely for sure -- Martell is already practicing for the Hurricanes, and his presence raises the expectations in Miami significantly.

Martell, who arrived at Ohio State in the 2017 recruiting class as a 4-star recruit and the No. 2 dual-threat signal caller in the class, was expected to become the Buckeyes starter this fall. Incumbent starter Dwayne Haskins is off to the NFL and could be an early first-round pick next month.

But then Ohio State had its own victory in the transfer portal -- the Buckeyes landed former 5-star and the No. 1 overall player in the 2018 recruiting class Justin Fields in December. Without Urban Meyer, the coach who recruited Martell, most believed the decision to land Fields meant the Buckeyes didn’t have their hearts set on starting Martell. At the very least, it meant he would face significant spring and summer competition.

ACC Football Rx: CFP + Final Four Appearances, last 5 years (RX; HM)

The College Football Playoffs features four teams. So does the NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four. Which conference has the most combined appearances over the last 5 years? Which has the least? Are there any surprises? Let's dive in and see...

Football Playoffs Basketball Final Four
Season Team Conf Year Team Conf
2014-15 Oregon Pac 2015 Duke ACC
Florida State ACC Wisconsin B1G
Ohio State B1G Michigan State B1G
Alabama SEC Kentucky SEC
2015-16 Clemson ACC 2016 Villanova East
Oklahoma XII North Carolina ACC
Alabama SEC Oklahoma XII
Michigan State B1G Syracuse ACC
2016-17 Clemson ACC 2017 North Carolina ACC
Ohio State B1G Gonzaga WCC
Alabama SEC Oregon Pac
Washington Pac South Carolina SEC
2017-18 Georgia SEC 2018 Villanova East
Oklahoma XII Michigan B1G
Clemson ACC Kansas XII
Alabama SEC Loyola-Chicago MVC
2018-19 Alabama SEC 2019 Michigan State B1G
Oklahoma XII Texas Tech XII
Clemson ACC Virginia ACC
Notre Dame IND Auburn SEC

The first thing you may notice is that the ACC has had a team in the CFP every year - even without counting Notre Dame. Also, while that is not true of the Final Four, the ACC makes up for 2018 by having two teams in the top 4 in 2016 - so it works out.

If we just tally the number of teams from each of the five power conferences, we get this table:

Conf #FB #BB #Tot
ACC 5 5 10
SEC 6 3 9
B1G 3 4 7
XII 3 3 6
Pac 2 1 3

Once again, the ACC is the model of consistency: 5 appearances in football, 5 in basketball, for a total of 10 - the highest number of all P5 conferences. However, the SEC is not far behind, thanks to 6 on the football side (5 by Alabama). The Big Ten is balanced like the ACC, just not quite as good at the top (Ooh, they'd probably hate to admit that!). The Big XII has nearly as many appearances as the Big Ten, despite having 4 fewer teams. The Pac-12 is just a dumpster fire.

Developer wants to build grocery store, restaurant, shops on historic Wellington House parcel (PS; Doran)

A developer is proposing a commercial project on the site of the historic Wellington House on Route 5 across from Towne Center at Fayetteville.

The project would potentially include a grocery store and small retail shops, town of Manlius officials said. The property at 7262 E. Genesee St. is just outside the village of Fayetteville.

The Wellington House, which for years was used for banquets, proms, wedding receptions and other events, was designed by Ward Wellington Ward and built in 1922-1923. The two-story house is a Tudor Revival-style mansion; there are two outbuildings on the property.

It has been closed for at least a year, neighbors said.

The developer has sent letters to three neighbors whose homes abut the property offering to purchase their homes up to a year after construction of any project.

Manlius town officials said the developer, in informal meetings with the town, first discussed a 47,000-square-foot grocery store, along with restaurants and shops. Since then, the developer has altered his zoning change request from residential to neighborhood shopping - rather than commercial as originally sought.

Lorraine Branham, dean of SU's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, dies of cancer

Lorraine Branham, who led Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications as dean for more than a decade, has died after a battle with cancer, Chancellor Kent Syverud announced in an email on Tuesday afternoon.
“This news is devastating for our community, including our students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends, supporters and all who knew and admired Dean Branham,” Syverud said in the email.
Branham has overseen the expansion of Newhouse’s communications programs since 2008, including the creation of the Newhouse Studio and Innovation Center, the Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship, the Newhouse Sports Media Center and the W20 Group Center for Social Commerce.
She also helped create The NewsHouse, a student-run news magazine, and led a $18 million fundraising campaign to renovate Newhouse 2.
Before coming to Newhouse as dean, Branham was a newspaper journalist who worked at the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Baltimore Sun. She was also the former director of the School of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin.
Syverud said in his Tuesday email that the university is finalizing arrangements to celebrate Branham’s impact on the SU community.
