NATIONAL-HAIKU-POETRY-DAY-%E2%80%93-April-17-768x384.png

Welcome to International Haiku Poetry Day!

Observed annually on April 17, National Haiku Poetry Day encourages all to try their hand in creativity. Haiku poetry is a form of Japanese poetry that is non-rhyming and normally consists of 3 lines with a syllable pattern of 5-7-5. Haiku poems are usually inspired by an element of nature, a season, a moment of beauty or an individual experience or event. Sensory language is used to capture a feeling or image.

Richard Wright (1908-1960)

In the April wind.

English haiku does not always follow the strict syllable count found in Japanese haiku. The typical length of haiku found in English language journals is 10-14 syllables, versus the 5-7-5 syllables used in the Japanese language.

Syracuse football: How is former 4-star recruit Qadir White developing? (PS; Bailey)

Qadir White put his hand in the dirt, lowered his body and looked up across the formation.

Just a few weeks into his first preseason camp as a Syracuse football player, the offensive lineman had been shifted from tackle to guard. Here he was lining up in his first team period since the switch; on the other side of the line, redshirt senior Chris Slayton dug in.

“I knew I had to just get off the ball before he got off the ball,” White said.

White watched Slayton plant his foot and then drive his arms. Then he felt the force of a man capable of squatting 700 pounds.

“He got me right,” White said with a chuckle.

Challenging moments like this have dotted White’s first year on campus. One of a handful of Dino Babers recruits to receive a four-star rating by a major recruiting service, he’s spent the last nine months largely out of the public eye. But he’s been busy -- switching positions and enrolling in the school of Slayton, logging extra hours in an effort to learn the playbook and gradually transforming his body to become more agile and conditioned.

The hope is that, in time, he’ll develop into the NFL-caliber lineman that many projected out of Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx. For now, though, growth comes in small increments, such as taking on a spot with the second-team offense this spring.

Post-Spring Projection of SU’s 2019 Record – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)

More than a month later, Syracuse football’s 2019 spring practice schedule is complete. The Orange capped of their spring slate in the Carrier Dome last weekend with the team’s annual spring game. So far, so good for Syracuse, meaning there haven’t been any significant injuries.

Dino Babers told the media last week that he expects all players to be ready for pre-season camp. For a team that has growing expectations, that’s pretty much all you can ask for. On top of that, there is growing optimism around the growth of quarterback Tommy DeVito. Many were encouraged by his performance in the spring game, building from last year’s showing.

There’s even more optimism surrounding the running backs. Moe Neal returns for his senior season, while transfer Abdul Adams looks to bring his versatile style to the ACC. Freshman Jawhar Jordan could demand snaps as well. The Orange have options in the backfield.

With spring ball in the rear view mirror, let’s check out SU’s fall schedule and project how they’ll finish this winter.

August 31 – at Liberty Flames: W (1-0)

Liberty’s first season in the FBS starts with a home game against Syracuse. Newly-renovated Williams stadium will be packed for the Flames’ season opener. However, that won’t be enough to take down a much stronger SU roster. There are some wild cards in this game. First-year head coach Hugh Freeze, who spent many successful seasons at Ole Miss, will have his squad fired up to host the Orange. How does DeVito handle the pressure of opening the season as the starter? That’s the question.

September 7 – at Maryland Terrapins: W (2-0)

Orange Watch: Spring game presentation builds excitement for 2019 Syracuse football - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: Hats off to the SU athletic department for a job well done last Saturday surrounding the final spring tune-up heading into Dino Babers’ fourth season.

Winning takes care of everything, and as a result interest in Syracuse football is at its peak this century with record-breaking ticket sales and the accompanying buzz that has surrounded the rebuild of a program that is aiming for annually securing a permanent spot in the weekly polls and playing for major bowl game appearances.

How else to explain the parking lots filled to capacity on the Dome’s west side in the hours leading up to last weekend’s event? There were plenty of good vibes and high fives all around, including the semi-retired Dome Ranger himself socializing among the tailgating crowd.

Most impressive to the day’s presentation was the effort of associate athletic director for business development Anthony Di Fino. Working under John Wildhack and with Syracuse media executive Ed Levine, they secured the appearance of the 1966 Syracuse backfield of Larry Csonka, Floyd Little and Tom Coughlin, two Pro Football Hall of Fame members in Csonka and Little, joined by a future member in Coughlin, with four Super Bowl titles among them.

The line to meet the unparalleled trio under a tent outside the Dome was several hundred and growing by the second leading up to the game.

In the end, everyone who came out on a beautiful day received a preview of the 2019 Orange, and while there is plenty of talent among the starting units, Babers knows the rebuilding process is constant.

“We’re still not there,” Babers said following the spring event when asked about building the roster through four recruiting cycles.

Santos Reviews Duke Football's Spring Practice (goduke.com; video; Santos)

With Duke’s spring practice period complete, rising senior offensive guard Julian Santos spoke with Blue Devil Network about the 15 workouts.

At the end of the spring segment, Santos was tabbed as the Blue Devils’ Co-Most Improved Offensive Player. During the 2018 season, the East Lake, Fla., product played in all 13 games and started seven at left guard. Last fall, he was a member of an offensive front that helped Duke close the year as one of four ACC teams to compile 2,000 or more rushing yards and 3,100 or more passing yards, joining Clemson, Syracuse and Virginia Tech. The Blue Devil offense produced 382 points, the fourth most in a year in program history. Santos also aided the offense to five games totaling 40 or more points, tied with the 1943 and 2014 squads for the most in a campaign in program history.

The Blue Devils open the 2019 season versus Alabama inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game on August 31. Tickets for the contest, as well as season tickets, may be purchased by calling the Duke Athletic Ticket Office at 919-681-BLUE or online at GoDuke.com/FootballTix.

University Hill neighborhood to see new bike lanes, improved sidewalks (DO; Follett)

The University Hill neighborhood will see the construction of five new bike lanes over the next few months.

Construction of the University Hill Bike Network Implementation Project, a plan to restore roads and sidewalks on streets around the University Hill neighborhood, began last week. Stretches of Comstock, Waverly and South Crouse Avenues will be modified with bike lanes, repaved roads and revamped sidewalks.

Mary Robison, city engineer, said the project is anticipated to be completed in late July. Two-way traffic on the roads will continue during construction, and work is being coordinated around major events at Syracuse University, such as commencement, she said.

“In the short term, it’ll probably be a little bit of an inconvenience, but in the long-term you’ll have a nice newly-paved roadway with more dedicated bike lanes,” she said.

Bike lanes were added to Euclid Avenue in summer 2018 after community outcry for several years. A band named Bike Lanes on Euclidrecently played at SUNY-ESF.
